We stopped in to Mantra India at 6:00 before a 7:30 performance at MVCPA. The food is absolutely fantastic! Our Gobi Manchurian appetizer was perfectly crispy and spicy. My wife's Chicken Tikka Masala was very tasty and comforting. My Peshawari Chicken was spicy in all the right ways. Joy took care of us with attentive, friendly and studied service. He made sure we were getting precisely what we wanted and he checked on us regularly. The vibe of the room is pretty relaxed. It's a crowd that is happy to be there. You'll know why when you go. We went there for Indian Street food and they were really good. I ordered the avocado jhalmuri and it was surprisingly very delicious and light. It reminded me of something I ate at Rooh a couple months ago. My friends ordered Amritsari kulcha and chole as well as chole bhature which tasted good. The tangy flavor of the chole was good but it wasn't the best. I really like the avocado jhalmuri - It was very much like the Indian Bhelpuri. I also ordered vada pav which was served with a side of red chili so you could balance out the spicy flavors based on how you like it. They also had interesting cocktail flavors on the menu but the Kala Katta one which we ordered did not taste like Kala katta at all. read more

The food here was good. I had a reservation for four on a Friday night. Let me preface with the food not being the issue whatsoever. Mantra was very empty the night we went and didn't struggle to get a reservation at all an hour before we ended up going. Exactly at the one hour mark, the server asked us to leave/handed us the cheque. We spent 100+ on our dinner and to be treated like that and asked to leave because we were at the table for exactly an hour is ridiculous. For that reason, I will not be returning nor would I advise anyone to return here. read more

Another great evening and meal at Mantra India, Mountainview. This time we enjoyed the Mantra 3 Course Dinners (one veg, one chicken). We discovered that the music and TV are near the front door, while the booths (and a long banquet table) toward the back provide a quieter, private dining experience. One day we will try eating outside at a heated plaza table, and continue to explore the great variety of choices on the menu! I went there couple times for their lunch buffet (both on weekday and weekends). On weekend you get free dosa on top of nans. On weekdays you will only get nans. I think they have decent dishes in their buffet for both meat lover and vegetarian. They have goat curry, butter chicken and curry chicken (sometimes they don't have in the buffet). I prefer their vegetarian biryani over chicken biryani, which is kinda dry and blend. Love most of their vegetarian dishes even though I am not vegetarian. They have good butter chicken also. The restaurant can be very crowded especially during lunch time on both weekdays and weekends. The restaurant is kinda small also. Service is pretty good. We made last min plans to dine here before watching a movie in MV, didn't have reservations, but the staff were so kind enough to arrange seating and ensure our food came in time so we don't miss our show. The restaurant was clean and with nice lighting, the staff were kind, attentive, and the food was soo delicious! We ordered dahi batata sev puri, chicken momos, masala papad, malai paneer, saag paneer, naan, tandoori roti, pau paji, chai, kiwi cooler, and Bombay mojito. Def 10/10 recommend. So thrilled to see outdoor dining back so I made the reservations right away. Both Gavin and I were craving Indian food. Due to the current restrictions, finding parking was easy. The entire Castro was blocked off for restaurants to setup their patio experience. Service was sort of blotchy but I knew w/ a limited staff, I shouldn't complain. After all, we need to continue to dine out so that restaurants can still be there when all of this COVID BS is over w/. It took some time to get the menu and our water but after that, the food came out so fast that I was surprised. We ordered: + samosas (bite size but very good) + vada pav (delicious, flavorful, soft and juicy potato patty) + pesto naan (unique, very flimsy but good) + traditional butter chicken w/ a side of rice (must order) Gavin and I enjoyed everything that we ordered. The butter chicken was the highlight of our meal. It was thick, comforting, and so tasty. It wasn't super cold out but there was a chill - once we took our first bite of it, we both lit up instantly. Came here for outdoor dining during the reopening of outdoor dining and really enjoyed the heat lamps and the ambiance of Castro. I got the chicken chettinad and boy was it SPICY -- they even made it less spicy for me, but it was actually quite a flaming aftertaste in my mouth. The pesto and garlic naan were really unique and actually the stars of the day. I enjoyed the garlic shrimp curry as well since it was super creamy. Nothing bad to say, but nothing great either Mains: Mantra Malai Paneer, Kashmiri Dum Aloo - 8/10 - these were both well done, and my dad particularly liked the dum aloo. And he's a harsh critic, usually! +Naan, Saffron rice As a surprise birthday treat, they brought out a plate of rasmalai with a cute candle. Came here before the pandemic and during the pandemic. 11/23/2019 Wife and I dined indoors during the evening among elegant but crowded Indian decorations in the downtown Mountain View hole in the wall along crowded Castro street. Ordered the $16.99 butter chicken and the $18.99 Kashmiri Roganjosh, along with $3.99 rice. Wife loved the hunks of boneless white chicken in a mild tomato-butter sauce, but did not eat the lamb dish, as prefers lamb rare. Larger than normal servings for an Indian restaurant, enough so that the meal functioned as two dinners for the two of us, adding eggplant to our meal at home. Used an Entertainment card to get a buy one get one free. 08/13/2020. Came here alone after picking up books at the Mountain View Library. 35 minute round trip drive from Sunnyvale. Used a Passport dining card. Ordered the $16.99 chicken Tikka masala, and the $17.99 chicken Chettinad. Pricey for what you get. Castro street closed off between Mercy street and Evelyn Ave for outdoor dining tables. You can still drive across Castro on the intersecting streets. Thursday 5pm Castro street is deserted, not because of the pandemic, but because of the record heat, with temperatures in the 90s. Staff and guests require masking. No indoor dining, no $20 AYCE lunch buffets, and no outdoor dining, despite there being a full complement of outdoor tables spread out for neighboring restaurants. No discount with the Passport dining card, aside from the 10% discount, same as with the VIP card, due to no outside dining. Would take dishes home and cook over broccoli and eggplant for two dinners. The Chettinad with chunks of boneless white chicken in a fiery spicy curry was so spicy that I had to drink lots of milk, blow my nose, and mop my brow with a wet washcloth. The chicken Tikka masala, boneless white chicken in a tomato onion curry, among the very best I have ever tasted, with fresh white meat chicken, rivaling Little India in Sunnyvale. I usually eat Sukee's frozen Tikka masala from Safeway or Costco. Comparing it to the restaurant Tikka masala is like night and day, and don't even mention Trader Joe's frozen Tikki masala! Later found out that Mantra has a special limited take out internet site menu with less expensive dishes, including $10 Punjab Fish Pakara, $10 chicken 65, $18 Tandorri Sampler with lamb shish kabob, and $10 chili chicken. As a senior with pre existing conditions during the pandemic, I hope to live long enough to try those dishes. Dishes literally to die for! read more

This evening I took a friend to dinner there and it was our first dinner experience. The food was excellent and the service even more so. We had the Masala Papad to start and that was excellent with two loaded papads to the order. The toppings gave a different take on a staple, nearly ordered a second portion! We had the Mantra Lamb Rack and Afghani Egg Curry with rice, all were perfectly cooked to our specifications and the spices were well balanced. For dessert we had Ginger Creme Brulee and Moong Dal Halwa, two totally different desserts and both beyond great. While I give the food 5 stars (wish I could give more), the service was even more outstanding, I wish I could give stars just for the service alone.
