I came on a Thursday afternoon just before they opened and there were guests waiting outside. It has been more than 25 years since I've been here. I don't remember much about the place so I got no positive or negative experiences I can compare to this visit. I have been to many similar buffets all over Northern California so my expectations are not too high here. My first attack was the sushi bar. Very good sushi selection for lunch. Comparable Tomi and World Gourmet Buffet in Fremont. No complaints. Made my way to the hot foods. Some familiar and some different items. First time seeing curry beef. The stir fry rice noodle they had was bland so I put the curry over it. It was good, I got a second helping. They had a pork ribs soup with either wintermelon or radish, couldn't tell what it was but it gave the soup some sweetness to it. If you're Asian you might have had it at home. It is light and soothing. Different than the usual hot and sour soup which they had but I skipped. Those were the two items I wanted to talk about in my review as no other Asian buffet had these. There are other typical items, aren't much different from other places so I'll keep this short. Must finish your meal with soft serve ice cream! It's comparable to McDonald's just doesn't have the strong vanilla flavor McDonald's has. I got a second cone for the road. Excellent choices of Chinese, Japanese and Asian desserts!! Each dish tasted unique and flavorful!! Noodle bar and dim sum were excellent choices. Many soups to select from. We came last Sunday around 2:30pm with a group of friends. The place wasn't too busy, which was great, we got seated right away, and the server took our drink orders pretty fast. Something I really liked about Hokkaido Buffet is how many options they have. Honestly, there's a little bit of everything: sushi, sashimi, seaweed salad, grilled meats like chicken and steak, shrimp, dumplings, fried wontons with cream cheese, plantains, pasta, rice... you name it! What I enjoyed the most was definitely the sushi and sashimi, super fresh and tasty. The dumplings and wontons with cream cheese were also really good. The plantains were sweet and just right, and I thought the rice and pasta had nice flavor too. We were a group of five, and each person paid around $34 for the buffet (before tip). I thought it was going to be a bit less, but maybe the price is higher for Sunday lunch, not 100% sure about that. We didn't try everything (it's a lot!), but overall I had a good experience. Came here on a Saturday around 12:30pm, only reason being another similar buffet in San Jose was closed for maintenance that day. The place was only half full, which was not a good sign because similar Chinese/Japanese buffets in this price range are usually packed on weekends. Plus, roughly 70% of the customers were from a funeral party - if not for them the place would be even more empty. Not having enough people is a problem for buffets because it means their food would not be very fresh. We initially requested water since drinks weren't included ($24 for lunch really should include drinks!), but were forced to order sodas because their water reeked of strong bleach smell. Their food were mostly lukewarm and they didn't get refilled quickly. Selections were very limited and were missing some key items that most buffets in this price range have. Taste was quite bland on some dishes. Their sushi selection was at least adequate. As buffet aficionados, I've been to many Chinese/Japanese style buffets in the Bay Area. It was my second visit in the last three years. For AYCE, food was ok. Some items tasted good. It was nice that they checked and kept refilling food. Sushi had 8-9 varieties. They made efforts to ensure quality. Honestly it was not bad at all. Crab didn't taste like petroleum this time. Seafood tasted fresh for the most of it. Spring roll had mushy fillings. Chicken kebab was hard to chew and not freshly made. Our server was polite and pleasant. He cleaned up plates and refilled water. But their chatters were a bit too loud. They do their bests to keep dining area clean and organized. However, the place was run down and outdated, with dirty carpet, aging and unappealing amenities. Restroom clean but old. Exterior environment was worse, dilapidated with broken tree retaining wall and cracked cement. If they renovate, keep food fresh and price reasonable, this place has so much potential. read more

A good value buffet although not the best quality food. There are A LOT of options to choose from, although many of the option are fried and not the healthiest. I liked that they have some soups and even a sushi/sashimi bar although the sushi bar was pretty much emptied out most of the entire time we were there. The cream cheese wontons, pot pie puffs, and chow mein were pretty good. Soft serve ice cream for dessert, amongst a bunch of other assorted jellos and little cakes, although they are not as good. And it would be nice if there was a flavor other than vanilla for the soft-serve. The staff is not super attentive so you have to actively flag them down if you need anything. read more

This has to be one of the most unsanitary buffets I've been to. Coming here I thought to give them a chance because there had to be one thing good of all the food that was there. I was wrong every piece of seafood and meat that I got from the siu mai, sushi, honey walnut shrimp, mussels, soup, etc. had a freezer burn taste. The service wasn't bad, but it wasn't the best. The place was so bad I got like 2.5 plates of sampling everything and I paid and left. I was not satisfied at all I also got a bad stomachache after. At first glance, it seemed like there was something for everyone. But as I walked through the stations, I noticed many of the items didn't look fresh. Some of the sushi was drying out, and the warming trays didn't seem hot enough to safely hold food, a clear red flag when it comes to bacteria risk. I played it safe, choosing items that were hot and well-cooked: fried shrimp, green beans, soy sauce noodles, steamed pork buns, and some Jello. The food was average. The shrimp were crispy but overcooked, the buns were the highlight, and the rest was serviceable but forgettable. The dining area wasn't especially clean. Several tables were cluttered with used plates, and spills were left unattended for a while. After reading some online reviews, I realized others had similar concerns about food quality and hygiene. Saw several pictures of some good-looking snow crab legs on their Yelp page here and was disappointed to see that they don't offer it. I'll call it a bait-and- switch moment. They had the typical salt pepper crab, but you'll have to work at it to enjoy anything from it. Despite having four or so rows of an assortment of food options which is deceivingly plentiful, the sub-par quality of available food items which made picking and choosing what you can or want to eat, very limiting. The inside setting was not very pleasant. It's old, the entire establishment barely felt maintained or outside for that matter. Weekend was dinner price which roughly came to $30 per adult, if you get drinks, it'll be more. I felt like I got ripped off. I can't recommend this place at all. My friends had their son's red egg and ginger party here, in the back private party room. Great for large groups. The buffet was well stocked, kept clean and refreshed often. For the 3 hours we were there, I didn't see any items that ran out of were not hot/warm. The servers were attentive to our drink orders and clearing out our plates and tables. Normally I am not a big fan of buffets, but my strategy was not to load up on carbs, but to taste small portions of things and if I liked it, I would go back for more. My favorites were the custard bao, caramelized little bananas, the sashimi, and battered shrimp. I finished with the soft serve on a cone. I did not try everything, but was selective in my choices. Would I come back on my own if it was an event? Most likely not, because I don't usually go to buffets. But this one was not bad. It has been awhile since I went to Hokkaido Buffet at 3830 Stevens Creek Blvd, San Jose, CA 95117. I have gone during lunch and dinner and have always found the buffet to be excellent. Today is the first day of 2024, so I went to lunch at Hokkaido and found that they were on their "A" Game. Since it was a holiday, the price was a bit higher. I was greeted by a very nice, polite hostess, who helped me locate a table of my choosing. The bus person was very polite and attentive to my drink and dirty plates. Everyone I saw was dressed professionally. Now to the buffet-what a sight to see! I was primarily interested in the Sushi table-I was not disappointed. Everything I tried was fresh and delicious. The main tables had dim sum, fresh fruit, beef ribs, egg rolls, soup, various fish, and the list goes on and on. The ambiance is very nice and clean. During my visit the restaurant was pretty full with large families. I noted some of the poorer reviews made reference to the price of the buffet. To me, the price is fine for what your getting-a quality buffet that is constantly monitored by the chef and cleaned by employees. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this buffet! I was here a few months ago and I will say nothing about this buffet was pleasant other than their ice cream. Near the back there's an unclean smell and the food quality was just poor. It was all super greasy/ too salty/ or just flavorless. The food didn't even look pleasant. I also saw a kid stick his hand into the ice machine with no one saying or doing anything about it. Calamari : chewy Grean beans: soft and over cooked Garlic bread: bland, cold and chewy (not toasty at all) And many other items cold even if placed on a "hot plate" Hokkaido Buffet many years ago used go be very popular with many people. With such a great and large venue space i believe it is just being wasted as a buffet as it has so much potential if it became a little remodeled and renewed to a more modern version. As for the food to be more loved and prepped with more passion as it's just disappointing to eat here no matter if the price per person is low and affordable. This is a really old establishment. The outdoor sign makes it seem like it's an empty lot or closed for business. The arrow sign posted on a wall pointing to the buffet is only visible if coming from the Santa Clara side of Stevens Creek. Inside the aesthetics is old, giving a late 80s-early 90s ambiance. The bathroom is disgusting and needs to be updated. Food was limited unlike other buffets. There were a lot more fried items and less vegetable dishes. Dimsum options were three different baos and shumai. There were a wide variety of sushi. The dessert section was smaller but their ice cream machine worked. However, the buffet's offerings fell short. The food, felt mediocre with a surprising exception--the chicken skewers, a hidden gem in an otherwise lackluster spread. Everything else was doughy, excessively greasy, and undeniably fried. While the price suggested quality, the majority of dishes failed to deliver, leaving much to be desired. However, what the buffet lacked in quality, it made up with in quantity and variety. There were 6+ tables of food. Seafood, prawns and shrimp and mussels and fish and whatever else can possibly be caught in the ocean on one table. Others had dim sum, wontons, pork buns, soup, fried and orange chicken, ribs, and roasted beef. There was a sushi table and a dessert table and ice-cream. Lots of choices, you definitely won't go home hungry. Maybe with a few pounds gained, because the good food there is not healthy. I came back Hokkaido because Dad took me to Kuni & we got ripped off, so I promise myself I'd come back to Hokkaido where it is all you can eat sushi. Plus the Tempura here is better than the Tempura at Kuni. In the past i was afraid to try the Hot foods but today I tried more & it was good. The Chicken Wings were a little dry (last time they were juicy, very good). The Pork today was pretty good too. I like the Pork Ribs they have but they only offer it for Dinner ( which is $29). But I got the regular Pork today, it was pretty good. The only thing was the beef was a little rubbery. The Broccoli was very good but the Beef inside was a little hard to chew or pieces of fat. So the pork & chicken is good but I dont know about the beef. The teriyaki chicken is excellent. They have orange chicken too but I dont like sweet chicken. If you dont want pay 20 dollars for lunch, you should ask them if you can get ToGo for 10.99 per lb. Just be careful not to take too much because it is per pound. But 10.99, there is No seafood. If you want Seafood, it is 13.99 per lb. This way, you can try tiny bit of everything & come next time " For Here". They also have Fried food section. I dont try the Spring Rolls because no room in my stomach. They have Fries, CheeseWonton,Fried Banana, & Delicious Sweet Potato Tempura. The Sesame balls today were crispy on outside and soft on inside. They also have DimSum. Custard Bun, Cha Sha Bao ( Pork). Today I tried the Shumai & it was good but a little dry. The Dumplings were good...the only thing I forgot is they had No Corn today, instead they had Singapore ( or Shanghai?) Noodle, its curry noodle but I wish other people can review because I cannot eat much. Last time the Green Beans were very good, but today I did not see it. They had very good Eggplant. And very good Cabbage,Stir Fry or Steam. They have Grilled Salmon (or Steam), White Fish, Clams, Crawfish ( the Crawfish was good today). Some type of Potato ( Curry? or) and potato Croquet? The Salad has white sauce but it was average sauce. They have Chickpea, Crab Salad, Seaweed, Squid. I hope they have Fried Squid for Dinner ( I want to come to Dinner one time) because the first time i came, the Fried Squid taste like Calamari & was really good ( I think they have Oyster for Dinner?) They have Fruit both Fresh & can. Fresh Cantelope, HoneyDew ripe, Oranges, Salad, Lemons...and Banana. Can fruit are Pineapple, Mandarin & lots of Jello ( I wish they have shave ice but they dont). They have a really good Vanilla Soft Serve. It is better than store ice cream. Oh, they had really good bundt cake one time but no more bundt cake ( it was really good). They have regular, not so great cake & macaroons. Hokkaido is still a great deal on Sushi. I dont eat very much but love the Sushi. I heard that Kuni has tiny California roll So the California Rolls here is better and they give you more crab. They also have avocado roll which is so good. I forgot to mention, they have wonton soup, pork soup & Hot Sour ( sweet sour?) soup. All the soups are good & hot.
