I was supposed to have a massage with Amy but she called out sick. The substitute masseuse was terrible. I've probably had 100 massages before. Hands down worst massage ever. I doubt she was licensed. It started with her wiping my whole body down with WET rough towels so I was soaking wet. I booked deep pressure which I usually love. I even request men with strong hands to work out the knots. This was not that. She used her forearm and elbow for 90% of the massage. It was so painful. I asked her like 7 times to go softer. She just kept smashing her bones on me. At times it didn't hurt but it NEVER felt good! Never massaging with her hands. She put my arm behind my back at one point and I thought the top of my shoulder was going to tear! The head rub which should be amazing was the worst part. She painfully clawed at my scalp and you could hear her ripping my hair out. She finished by scrubbing me roughly with more soaking wet very rough towels. When I got in my car I actually cried. When I got home I went to bed feeling almost like I'd been assaulted. It's a shame Amy called out because she has great reviews. I wish the shop would have just rescheduled. read more

Overall, a really rough and fast-moving massage. I didn't relax for a second. I went with a friend the day before her wedding, expecting to start the weekend off with a relaxing experience and it was actually painful, and here therapist started cupping her back without consent and now has cupping circles on her back for her wedding day which she is so sad about. Not okay! Really irresponsible to assume people want cupping done. I will not be returning or recommending this place to anyone. read more

I went to the group Reiki and meditation class held by Mantra Karuna's lovely owner, Nok. Before this I had not heard much about Reiki, or really energy healing in general, but all I needed was an open mind and to be ready to relax. At the group reiki and meditation session, there were yoga mats available for everyone to use, pillows to sit on or rest your head, and a fresh cleansing of the air at the start of the session. After introducing herself, Nok shares about the Reiki practice and does a few minutes of guided meditation. The rest of the class is self-guided meditation and a reiki session where she pulls energies from different sources on the body through a gentle touch. I've been thinking about my massage yesterday and debating writing a review. I had a really different experience than most of the reviews, and I think some feedback could be helpful to the staff (and clients). TL;DR: Not the best or worst massage I've had, but overall disappointing experience. Full explanation: First, I walked into the space and it was not very welcoming. Nobody was at the desk so I waited a min until someone came out from the back, who was my masseuse. She quickly checked me in and asked me if I needed the bathroom. I used it and came back out, and she was gone again. I think she was setting up the room, so I stood there until she returned a few minutes later to bring me back. She sort of explained how to lie on the bed, but I had to ask for clarification because it was my first prenatal massage which is a bit different. Then she left for me to change and didn't come back for another 5 min or so. I think it was now ~10 min after my appt start time, which is totally fine, but she didn't end up massaging for the full 75 min which is what is frustrating. Once she came back, she didn't ask me if I'd had a prenatal massage before, how I was feeling, if there were any areas I wanted to focus on, etc. I found this extremely bizarre. In fact the only real communication we had was her commenting about how small I am and asking me my height. I'm well aware that I'm very petite (4'11), but I am pretty athletic and have had many massages before. The first side she massaged was light pressure. After she finished the first section and hadn't checked in with me, when I switched sides I told her she could do harder pressure. She laughed and said okay, and then proceeded to amp it up about 10x and didn't' once ask "is this okay." I ended up needing to ask her to go a little lighter. It was strange though because the general pressure would be good but she used her thumbs a TON, and it would hurt when she dug them in and not feel aligned with the more general pressure. Anyway...I have been experiencing major tension in my upper back and neck, which she didn't spend much time on. So I decided to ask for 5 extra minutes on that area + 10 min on feet (was supposed to be getting +15 min foot massage). She said okay and that last 5 min on my neck and shoulders were honestly the best of the entire time. I will say that area feels better today and I'm glad I said something, but the whole experience was just not very comfortable, which made it less enjoyable and relaxing than I had expected. Last note is that she didn't offer water at the end, ask how I was feeling, make any comments or recommendations, nothing. Overall I expected better based on all the great reviews. I was hoping to come back a couple more times before my due date, but will look for somewhere else. read more

At 38 weeks pregnant, I finally caved and decided to get a prenatal massage for myself. Since I am already on maternity leave and I am trying to stick to a budget, I first decided to check Groupon for a deal. I got lucky and found Mantra Karuna, which is only about 5 minutes from my house. I called on a Sunday and made an appointment for the following day, and was able to get right in (thankfully - because this baby could truly arrive any minute!). The location is easy to find, and there was parking available right out front. Nok greeted me as soon as I walked in the door, invited me in to the space where I was given time to undress and lay down. The bed was SO comfy, even while initially laying on my back. Nok has a wonderful, calming presence and voice to match. I felt relaxed from the very beginning. She had me roll onto one side while she added pillows under my belly and between my knees for comfort, and got right to work. The pressure, intensity and rhythm was perfect. Nok was so methodical even in the way she removed and replaced the sheet and cover each time she rearranged them to work on an area, I was surprised I wasn't asleep in the first 5 minutes. She moved from my back/neck on one side, to my legs, to my back/neck on the other side, feet, décolleté and arms, scalp... it was truly heavenly. At the end of the 60 minutes she began the reiki, during which I'm pretty sure I tuned the world out. At the end of the session, Nok gently thanked me and let me know I could take my time to get up and dressed. I am truly grateful to have found Nok and Mantra Karuna, and would absolutely recommend her services to anyone, pregnant or not. I joked on my way out that I would definitely be back, but AFTER the baby arrives, because otherwise the total relaxation I was feeling would likely send me into labor. Might not be a bad idea, though, if baby decides to be stubborn and take her sweet time... :) read more

I had such a wonderful experience at Mantra Karuna. I woke up with terrible upper back and neck pain, which seemed to trigger a painful migraine. I had been trying out different massage studios in the area and I had wanted to try Mantra Karuna. It was easy to schedule an appointment through Yelp. I was even given the option to pay onsite, which is a plus if you want to use cash. There were places to park along the street and the entrance was easy to find. The welcoming patio area was nice to wait in and I was greeted promptly after. The site is very clean and comforting. My massage was the best I have ever had. Paula was awesome! She listened to me as I described my problem areas and she did a fantastic job to alleviate my pain. I was even given a delicious cup of tea after my massage. Since we were calling the day before, we followed their instructions to text if it's a "last minute" request which we did but no one bothered to reply to text. Too bad, will never know how good they claim to be as we opted for massages at another establishment and really enjoyed it! I have been coming to Mantra Karuna for over a year now for chronic shoulder and neck pain. I absolutely love both Nok and Paula. Nok has created a welcoming, safe and clean environment, beautifully decorated to be soothing and relaxing right as you enter. I love the massages that both Nok and Paula have given me. Both have been very attentive to my aches and pains and I always leave feeling so relaxed and less tension in my body.
