I don't know anyone who wants to eat curry in a dark, dirty room in the fetal position. Another commenter described the place as "Chuck E Cheese for hipsters" and that nails it. Maomao is better as a bar, not a restaurant. The music is super loud (you can't talk in there) and the chairs and tables are super uncomfortable. It is also so dark inside and you'll have to use flash light to check out the menu. We asked the manager if he can turn down the music a bit (it was like at 6pm) and he said he would rather die than turning it down. Food was ok but service was even worse. Had a birthday dinner with a large party and the host took my bottle of rum which was a birthday gift. We had no intention of opening the bottle and was going to put away since we understood that no alcoholic beverages were allowed. Staff was rude and shouldn't be in the hospitality business with that type of attitude. My friends and I had such a horrific experience and NEVER going back. This place gave me mixed energy. For one (on the positive side), the vibe is immaculate. The setting combines hole in the wall, antiques full of nostalgia, and an old movie theater setting complete with theater style seats, a projector, and even working arcade games (lost in street fighter while paying the bill!). This is sometimes a bit of a detriment though; we were originally seated in movie theater seats that were comfortable but positioned awkwardly such that sitting at them while eating would have been inconvenient. The food was quite good and the 3 stars would have been 4 if the prices were a bit better. A friend and I shared the Kao Moo Dang and Khao massamun gai curry. We both thought the Kao Moo Dang was okay but that the curry was quite good. As far as drinks go, the main thing we were encouraged to try was the Ya Dong along with a beer. Our server was incredibly helpful in giving us advice on beer pairing. I had the Hard D*ck (yes, that's what it's called) with a Singha. Unlike the food prices, I found the prices for drinks fairly reasonable and even pretty good compared to bars around the area. Overall, I would strongly recommend this place for both drinks and food. If you and your group are quite hungry, you might have to spend a lot to get full, but the drinks and experience are plenty worth it. read more

I really wanted to like this place. Its a cool space and decorated well. The food was ok/good but a little on the pricey side for what it was. But by far it was the most uncomfortable dining experience I think I have ever had. My back, literally hurts from trying to position myself to eat the food in the peculiar dining set up they have. The chairs a very small, and not set up very well with tables. I had very little legroom, and I am pretty short myself. This is my first ever yelp review and this place is the only reason I wanted to write one. We got two drinks, and order of the curry puffs, which we totally had to get another order of. The best staff, amazing ambiance, and the music really impressed me. Me and my friend felt totally welcomed and comfortable the whole time and decided it's an absolute return. It was a quick trip back to the streets of Thailand in Brooklyn with a twist of old school cinema + junk yard vibe. The seats were theater style and you're surrounded by so many random crazy old school gadgets like a vintage hair salon chair in one corner plus some records, video-games, old school shelves filled with Asian spices and beverages, a giant wooden makeshift shelf they put together filled with jars jammed with medicinal spices and random vintage posters along the walls, and of course old school Asian film projecting on the wall. It's dark inside but it's a whole mood like you stepped into a Wong kar wei movie set similar to In the Mood for Love. There's nothing fancy about this place though so if you're looking for a fancy schmancy dining experience look elsewhere. Food is street style served on plastic or paper plates and you eat with plastic utensils. Cocktails served out of plastic cups and shots were served in little medicine cups. I loved the vibe and the feel of it all, but I just didn't like how low the dining tables were when you're seated. I had some kind of chicken wings which were good but served in a plastic cup!! So weird. I got a tiny cup of water. I even asked why are they serving this in plastic making more trash for landfills? My knees were killing me and so was my back when I got up. I had a slender bench to eat on and had to hold my plate under my chin to eat. Food is served on paper plates, and drinks in plastic cups, giving it a real "Thailand street food" vibe. The food here is no joke - juicy, flavorful and perfectly spicy. Love this place...a gem in New York, beautiful ambiance and amazing family who runs it (they started the restaurant during the pandemic). It has a feel of being in Thailand with the Thai cinema and Thai pantry. All the dishes are authentic street food and more (no Pad Thai on the menu, and that's a good thing because it'll challenge you to try something different). I had the pik gai zapp (fried chicken dish) and the tom yum goong soup (lemongrass broth). Warning: The soup is on the spicier side. This is some of the worst Thai food I've had in NYC. Extremely disappointing. I'd give the food 1 star but it gets 2 because of the atmosphere and because I was able get drunk during dinner since the service wasn't bad. We shared the larb, and papaya salad, it was all meh. My entree was the bamee moo dang which was some plain ass noodles with pork on them, minimal sauce drizzle. I would expect this type of food from a budget mall place in Flushing but not for this price. I will not go back.
