Mao's Kitchen is a gem in the rough and I can't wait to see them shine brighter! They just started out on their feet in this location so a lot of aesthetics are not fully set up however don't let that stop you from trying their delicious food! I highly recommend that you order IN ADVANCE to when you actually are hungry. This is great for those that know they are craving some good quality Chinese food (with American dish menu). Apparently this is their second location and for an area that doesn't have a lot of good chinese-focused food (that also deliver and still taste good) - I look forward to seeing them thrive in this space! Their staff is friendly and they were super busy with getting all the food out the door. They also offer serve-yourself-station of lemon water, napkin and utensils. I've tried their 17a Curry Pineapple Fried Rice with Shrimp and Cashew , 21 Sweet & Sour (with chicken), and 25 Sesame & Yam (with fish). Ordered vegetable chow fun and the stuffed eggplant appetizer. I liked both and they tasted 'clean', meaning they didn't add anything unnatural. There's a few tables inside and some outdoor seating in the courtyard. It is tucked away in the corner, opposite of Trader Joe's entrance. There is metered parking and I think a parking lot. Handwritten signs on their door. I walked in and was told the estimated wait was 30 minutes for food. They are very busy with to-go orders so you should call ahead of time. I'm always up for Chinese food, and I was excited to see that Mao's, which used to have a location on Melrose, had opened by my neighborhood Trader Joe's. The new location has a few tables (at present, maybe a couple inside and a couple outside), but given the disposable utensils and the fact that the food is served in a takeout container, it feels more like a takeout spot--even though the ambiance is pleasant inside. (Maybe eventually they'll get actual signs--right now, it's just paper signs in the window that tells people it's Mao's Kitchen.) You order at the counter, where a friendly gentleman took my order, which was for the Orange-Ginger Chicken (one can also select beef), along with a side of white rice. I filled a disposable cup with water and waited for my order, which came out in a reasonable time. I enjoyed my chicken, which had solid flavor (maybe the pieces could have been a little meatier) and was a generous portion with a few pieces of broccoli (I wouldn't have minded a little bit more broccoli). In fact, the portion was substantial enough that I had enough for lunch the next day. Prices were fair given the portion size. This is definitely a nice addition to the neighborhood, and I look forward to trying some of their other menu items. read more

My friend and I used to go to the old Melrose location and were surprised to find that they have this new location. It is in the same plaza as Trader Joe's (caddy corner) so it was a bit hard for me to find because I didn't see their A-frame sign coming up the stairs. The location is tiny but they do have some tables to dine in. We sat outside and ordered via QR code and the food was brought out to us. We got the veg dumplings, noodles with smoked tofu, and the fish with yam. Generous portions but the flavor of the smoked tofu noodles were slightly different from the old Melrose location, still good but different. I really enjoyed the flavor and texture of the dumplings - this was my fav, and the fish was good as well. Not sure if they validate but I didn't check. read more

I was hoping for that delicious, smokey and savory Chinese food with the "kiss of the wok" flavor. Instead, the food that was served to us was DRENCHED in over-the-top sweet sauces. Food: the shrimp dish was a gloopy sweet sauce with pineapples and a few shrimp. The spicy eggplant was served in a soup container and swimming in yet another sweet sauce with no spice at all. Ironically, the noodle dish was tastless. Even the chow mein at Panda Express has more flavor. Service: although we ordered 2 hours in advance, our order was 45 minutes late. The restaurant was empty. What a disappointment. It's safe to say I won't be back. read more

Mao's Kitchen is back in West Hollywood! This time they are on the ground floor of the Avalon, along Fuller adjacent to the Trader Joe's. Mao's Kitchen is a staple in Venice loved by the community for 25 years. When they were on Melrose, I had been through their entire menu for the most part. My favorites were always Sesame and Yam chicken, Long Life Beans and a few other items that aren't on the new WeHo menu yet. They've just moved in, so they don't have full service with tableware and everything just yet. But you can order takeout and eat on the tables right outside. I recommend you do that with the crispy stuff, because everybody knows that delivery is the enemy of crispy food. I am so glad we ate there, because this time we tried the Orange Ginger Chicken. It was beautifully crispy and tangy, with much more of a ginger zing then you'll find in most orange chicken. The vegetable lo mein was also really fantastic. The beef is super tender, but not too tender you know? The vegetables were fresh and crisp, with a light brown sauce, really nice. It's the kind of food that keeps you nibbling even when you know you should stop at 2/3 full right? The proprietors are members of our Weho community and it's really nice to support the work of folks you meet when you're out walking your dog. i'm hoping they do well enough here to start bringing in some of the more Chinese dishes from the Venice location, like the Dan Dan Mian, Wewuer Lamb, Shao Mountain Lamb and the Countryside Commune Eggs. These items, along with the Sesame and Yam that is on the WeHo menu, are really items that make it stand out from other restaurants. Mao's is back and better than ever! Their chicken Lo mein is so fresh. It's so many veggies and chicken. My only complaint is I'd like less chicken more noodles -but I'm sure I'm in the minority on this. Plus they have $2 egg rolls! Get the hot mustard. Try it please!
