Ordered takeout recently and was pleasantly surprised by the quality. Beef rolls were good, and the wrapper was not too tough or chewy as it can be at some other places. The Zha Zhang noodles are honestly my favorite thing on the menu... they're very fresh and mildly sweet and salty. I will have to say that everything on the menu is pretty exceptional. The beef roll, the dumplings, all of the protein entrees (yes... there is Orange Chicken... and yes it is very good). Generally Northern Cafe is one of my delivery favorites to Uber Eats/Doordash, but I've recently found out how much more affordable it is to dine in, and this location has plenty of seating, parking and friendly service. Dishonest Tipping Practice I've been to this northern café in Beverly Hills before with my white husband and had a pleasant experience, so I decided to take my parents visiting from Beijing. Unfortunately, this time was very different. The waiter didn't greet us or offer any conversation. We didn't need his help for the self-service water, but he poured it for us anyway and then walked away. At other northern-style cafes, tipping isn't expected since it's mostly self-serve. Here, you scan a QR code to order, pack your own food, and check out at the counter. When it was time to pay, I noticed the waiter had already selected a tip for me without my consent. The only words he spoke were asking me to swipe, and when I questioned why the tip was already included, he seemed irritated and just told me to sign. I didn't want to make a scene in front of my parents, but this felt like tip fraud. Also the food tasted not great, you can see the dumplings were broken. I'd appreciate a response from the owner about whether this is standard practice and a partial refund of my tip. If it is, it's even more concerning. read more

So today is my 5th day in a row eating at Northern Cafe. On my 1st visit I simply came in because of its location. It is like 100 steps from the hotel I'm staying. FOOD: On my second visit I truly came back because the food is DELICIOUS. Everything I have tried thus-far has a distinct natural flavor. Everything is fresh, with unique blends of aromatic herbs. First time trying this place with an online order. When picking up the order, they could not find it. They said it was lost... Immediately I was panicking. The order was rather large, it was placed in advanced, and it was already paid. Eventually after a few swipes on their tablet they found the order. They told me not to order online and just call it in next time. Ok... your website says they take online orders, so is your system not connected? Initially not the best experience. Food wise it was ok. I ordered Shanghai noodles with chicken. Portion wise, it was not a lot of food and the chicken was really dry. I was hoping they would use leg meat for the noodles, but they used the breast meat, which usefully dries out when stir fried. Probably won't be going back to this location as the prices here are outrageously more expensive. This place was fairly busy when we stopped by for dinner. Most of their ordered online, but despite that we got our food fairly quick. I had their orange chicken ( totally to die for) Chrispy on the outside but soft on the Inside, the sause is homemade and has a pinch of salty and sweetness to it. Their dumplings are fresh to order. The menu is diverse with vegetarian dishes and meat dishes, which worked out well for my vegetarian friend. We often order a couple of entrees to share and a side dish to enjoy separately. Mapo Tofu (4/5)- Delicious silken tofu cubes in a tasty sauce. The entree comes with a bowl of rice. I do wish that the dish was spicier- heat and numbing. Sauteed Green Beans (5/5)- If you've never had Chinese sauteed green beans, you definitely need to try it. The green beans are garlicky and crisp. This entree also comes with a bowl of rice. Scallion Pancakes (3/5)- The pancake was pan-fried well, but this appetizer was nothing special. Shrimp Wontons in Spicy Sauce (4/5)- I love the plating and the spicy sauce these wontons come in. Each order comes with 6 wontons. There used to be a limited number of parking spaces available in the private parking lot across the street, but the most recent time I came here the lot was closed. The only option for parking is paid street parking. Overall, Northern Cafe offers delicious dishes. Note: If you're looking to order Northern Cafe for takeout, I would recommend calling the restaurant and picking it up yourself. All the third-party apps add $1-3 dollars to every dish. read more

Recently visiting this place again, I'm a little disappointed, as they seemed to have really skimmed down the menu. Of courses prices went up as it did everywhere but it was a bit steep. The cold appetizers were my favorite part and f the menu but they got rid of it :( and while the boiled dumplings were tasty, they were broken and watery which means they were not cooked well. My friends and I came here after a long evening of dancing and we were not let down! We entered into the restaurant and there was only one table with people. No problem. The ambiance was nice. The restaurant was spacious and everything was clean. We were allowed to seat ourselves and get our own menus. I was excited that we chose this place because they sold dumplings!! I ordered the shrimp, egg and chive dumplings (D12) and the scallion pancake. Everything came to our table hot and fresh and that made me happy. The dumplings were good but not exceptional. The highlight of my eating experience though were paring my dumplings with the sauces they had. The dumplings came with a "dumpling sauce" which was good and on the table they had a house chili sauce which was my favorite paring and another chili sauce. I really enjoyed how well the dumplings and the scallion pancake went well with the house sauce! The service was pretty much nonexistent outside me standing at the register and paying for my food... Cute little cafe I found on Yelp when feeling like it was close to dinner time. That and I feel like I need to know of more good Chinese in the area, headed over to Northern Cafe, which is just north of the Beverly Connection on Beverly Blvd. Parking is scarce -- however, there's street parking which is free after 8pm. Northern Cafe has a very clean and modern decor which I really like. Staff was patient as we made our dinner decisions which had to include the 8-pc pork dumplings, orange chicken and noodles. Guests order and pay at the counter and find their own seating with a number. The food came very quickly and staff will check to make sure everything is okay during the meal. I have to say, the prices are reasonable and the food is so good! I hardly had any leftovers. I really feel like Northern Cafe is a hidden gem as I've never heard of it by mouth or on any eater-type lists so I'm glad to know of it. Please check it out if you're in the area! read more

I've given Northern Cafe several tries by now, ordering something different each time, and it's never been great. All their dumplings are too watery inside. The mapu tofu - a favorite of mine at other restaurants - had an ingredient that not only had an odd taste, but gave my mouth an allergic reaction. (I second whoever mentioned the dish soap taste!) The other items I've tried are simply bland, with the most enjoyable thing being simple steamed vegetables like the bok choy. Even their rice is dried out! I used to settle for Northern Cafe as a budget option, but their prices have now gone up to a point where they're no cheaper than other options in the area. read more

This is actually a very good place for some delicious Taiwanese food. I can't say it will compare to a somewhere in the SGV, but it quite good. I was recently here for dinner with a buddy and we ordered 4 items to share. We had the Pork Dumplings, Orange Chicken, Shanghai Fried Noodles, and Fried Chicken. I enjoyed everything, but my absolute favorite were the dumplings. Just a lot of flavor in these dumplings and they're full of juice. Be careful, as they can burst and drip all over you. The Orange Chicken was pretty standard. Not sure I'd order it again. Shanghai Fried Noodles are worth ordering. I'd skip on the fried chicken wings. There are a lot of different choices on the menu. I'd come back and order different items to try. The restaurant is quite spacious and very clean. I think they could have better ventilation though. I left the restaurant with my clothes smelling like all sorts of Chinese food. I don't like the set up of ordering at the counter and paying before you get the food. We stopped to have lunch here and boy are we glad we did! The food here is outstanding! The dumplings are delicious they are steamed but yet fried on one side making them the best of both worlds! We also had a roll the was so flavorful! And the water and soda cups are stainless steal making the drinks so cold . A rare find of Taiwanese/Chinese dim sum outside of the San Gabriel Valley that delighted our palates during our stay in Los Angeles. We were driving along Beverly Boulevard when we noticed this cafe one day and after a quick check in Yelp, we returned for a light dinner. This location is one of 3 Northern Cafés found in Los Angeles. From previous reviews, I noted that this cafe has its own private parking lot. From Beverly Blvd, we made a quick turn on to North Alfred Street and found a parking space in their private lot. Yay! No worries about having to be aware of parking by permit only, valet or carrying coins to insert into those street meters. We entered and wondered if we needed to place our order at the counter then find a seat but, we were greeted and guided to a booth. The young woman who seated us, brought us menus and water. We asked about ordering beer that we saw on their menu board but were told that the alcoholic beverages were unavailable due to licensing issues. With hope, they'll have their license will be re-instated. Our server explained the menu to us and even showed us the selection of cold appetizers in their deli case. We made the decision to get 3 items for $8.50. The appetizers that we chose were the spicy lotus root, spicy cucumber and wood ear mushrooms. Each appetizer had a different level of spiciness, texture (crunchiness) and flavor. We were most interested in their hand crafted dumplings which the menu indicated the choices of either boiled or pan fried. The menu also featured noodles, fried rice, small plates and entrées. FOOD: -Fish & Chive Dumplings (10), Boiled: I insisted upon ordering these dumplings to "test" the delicate flavors of fish and chives even though my carnivore relatives seemed indifferent towards it. The fish and chive combination is a traditional Chinese flavor reminiscent of the classic steamed fish dish. Well, they were all pleasantly surprised and pleased with the flavor and texture of this dumpling. $8.50 -Lamb Dumplings (10), Pan fried: Plump with chopped lamb, not ground, and flavored with ginger, Szechuan peppers (?), white pepper, soy sauce, Chinese wine and I think sesame seed oil, these dumplings were golden browned and lightly crisped on their bottoms and steamed up to its seams. There wasn't the typical gaminess so I'm going to assume that it was fresh lamb not mutton. The chopped texture of the filling was a great mouthfeel. $9.00 -House Special Cumin Lamb: Thinly sliced, almost shaved, lamb was sautéed with cumin, onion, cilantro and chilies. This dish begged for a cold beer complement but cups of hot tea just had to do. My taste buds aren't as "tough" as my husband's or BIL's so I just took small tastes. This dish was nicely balanced with cumin and chilies. $12.50 -Shanghai Noodles: Generously portioned to share, these thicker noodles (almost like Japanese udon) were flavored with shredded chicken, cabbage and bean sprouts. It was sauced with Northern Café's housemade Lao Gan Ma sauce, which contains chilis, black beans and peanuts. So, if you're allergic to peanuts, please be aware. These stir-fried noodles were tasty and had good contrasting textures. $8.50 -Peking Meat Pie: Pan fried, flaky and crisp with juicy flavorful pork filling. This pie was reminiscent of the Taiwanese beef roll or scallion cake. Very enjoyable with its textural contrasts. 5pcs/$6.75 -Chonqquing Crispy Chicken: Crispy boneless fried chicken pieces were tumbled in a light sauce of jalapeño peppers, chili pepper powder and onions. After trying a few pieces, my mouth was feeling the burn so I stopped but will admit that this chicken was flavorful. My BIL and husband both chowed down on this spicy and well-flavored dish. It was impressive that the fried dish wasn't greasy or oily. $10.25 Our first visit here was successful although they lost their alcohol license and are in the midst of renewal. This is our second visit to this location of Northern Café but they still haven't gotten their license. I love the guy who took our order - he was SO nice. My friend and I had gone in there on Thanksgiving day to get a snack. We ordered the meat pies and some potstickers. I also found out at the same time that a friend of mine who lives close by tested positive for COVID so I ordered a beef noodle soup and dumplings for him so I could drop it off. The meat pies and potstickers were so good, it was hard for us to stop eating it, but we didn't want to ruin our Thanksgiving meal. We ended up snacking on more of it as a Thanksgiving meal appetizer. My friend that we dropped food off to LOVED the juicy pork dumplings and the noodle soup.
