I definitely recommend this place if you're looking for good Chinese food that's quick, cheap, and simple. If you want good cheap eats, you don't go to a fancy restaurant. You go to a small mom-and-pop spot, and that's exactly what this is. I ordered the beef fried rice, and I honestly think it's the best fried rice I've had in LA, even compared to more expensive Chinese restaurants. The portions are huge too. The beef fried rice was only $14.95, and the drinks are under $5. The restaurant is run by an elderly couple, with the woman working the front and the man cooking in the back. You can tell they care about the food they're making. This is more of a takeout spot than a dine-in restaurant. You can eat there, but the parking lot is small and narrow since it's next to Ross and a few other businesses. It's easier to just pop in, grab your food, and head out. If you're someone who usually goes to Panda Express, this place is a better value. You get more food for your money, and I'd rather support a small local business. It's not the nicest-looking restaurant, but don't let that stop you. The food is fresh, the portions are generous, and the quality is there. I stopped by on a whim and am glad I did. The interior could use a total refresh it is pretty run-down. If they had it cleaned up with decent seating I could see myself staying to eat. I did take-out and the woman was SO SWEET. I tried a fried shrimp dish with potatoes, and the teriyaki chicken. The lo mein wasn't good but none in LA is so I'm not upset about it. The shrimp and chicken were amazing I would go back for that. I tried the macaroni salad it was blah. Do not turn your nose up at my precious Volcano Wok. I've been coming here for 18 years. I can't believe it has taken me this long to write a review! It is located in a seedy strip mall next to Ross. It is definitely not fancy but for what it lacks in ambience it more than makes up for it with the food and the service. I always get the steamed rice, noodles and shrimp from the buffet. Never disappoints! I work crazy hours at the studio close by and no matter what time it is, I can always come here and get a quick, affordable and tasty lunch! Forget subway. I had taken the extra step to call and confirm my order with the restaurant who said they received it and were making it. What made my experience with this restaurant beyond terrible is for 1.) The Asian female driver didnt understand English AT ALL, 2.) So going to find her, I was able to see the deliverer near main office, which I pointed where she could've seen me, prior to her walking all around the facility smh. So as im approaching her to retrieve order, I reached to grab the food, WEIRDLY she pulled back, as in not wanting to give me food, so that was it for me. I just walked off, as in not going bk and forth with someone who doesnt understand english... I made sure to call grub hub as well as inform the guy who kept calling me from the restaurant, that she refused to give me the food, but unfortunately he didn't understand what I was saying OMG . This place is way better than strip mall American Chinese/Hawaiian has any right to be. It's classic, simple, nothing fancy and nothing unique. The portion sizes for delivery are huge and filled with meat. The Hawaiian plates are tasty, but the fried rice and the General's tofu are the way to go. If you're on the corner of Sunset Boulevard and La Brea Avenue (I'm not even going to ask what you were doing, dollface) and are in the mood for [cheap] food, you'll find that a plethora of eateries -- none of which are expensive -- vie for the honor of accepting your dining-out dollars, on all four corners of the intersection. George and Abe are quite the eligible bachelors in this part of town. If burgers are your bag, you've got Wendy's and Burger King to clog your arteries, hardcore. If hoagies and heroes are your homeboys, Subway and Quizno's bring in both the noise and the funk (and oil and vinegar/salt and pepper) to the table, served on a baguette in sizes ranging from average to very well endowed. If you're itching for pizza in your face, there's a New York Pizzaria next to El Pollo Loco, next to Wingstop, next to Starbucks, next to, next to... You get it... -- So why go to Surf's Up Hawaiian Barbecue, and battle for a spot in the Fall-of-Saigonesque parking lot it shares with 7-11, Subway, Ross Dress for MESS, H&R Block, and that internet cafe where all the dope pushers hang out? You might have been lulled -- as I was -- by their low prices. And it's true -- you can get a really big lunch for less than $5, however you DO get what you pay for, and your tongue isn't going to fall in love with you all over again (did it EVER love you, with all the naughty words?) after you've been treating it to the Chinese food behind the sneeze guard. The Chinese food isn't terrible, and it isn't wonderful. It's just there, like an irregular pair of Calvin Klein briefs from Ross. As far as the cooked-to-order BBQ items, they're a bit pricier (albeit all still under ten dollars, so Alexander Hamilton can still take his pick!), and they're far more memorable than the snoregasmic Chinese fare languishing beneath the heat lamps and the kayak that the owners bolted onto the wall to give the place ambiance. The fried shrimp in particular (the #4, $6.95) is quite exceptional for the price, as are the SPAM wasabe ($2.95) and barbecued ribs ($8.95). All come with steamed rice (you can't mess that up) and macaroni salad -- which has the potential to be a disaster if done wrong, but Surf's Up does it right, and it's really good. The Wonton Soup ($4.95 for a medium, $5.95 for a large) is also fantastic and easily worthy of a non-stripper mall restaurant. The store is family owned and the employees are very friendly. There are often flyers for gyms and various athletic events floating around the tables or cash register counter -- sort of a wink and a nudge not to eat too much, or you'll end up like that Jared guy from Subway next door. I love cheap Chinese fast food restaurants but haven't seen too many in my area until I was able to stop by Hawaiian BBQ for a quick lunch. The reason to love these fast food places is the idea of slammin' rounds of soy sauce and hot sauce on top of mountainous serving of greasy food for some deep fried wok fried and fried fried goodness. It wasn't until the last decade that Panda Express became a household name synonymous with this particular food genre, but in reality the contributions of Chinese fast food delis, buffets, and no frills hole in the wall have historically been very diverse and offer a significantly better value than what the big chain can. This Chinese operated Hawaiian restaurant embodies these sensibilities as the windows were covered from top to bottom with posters of food and a humongous sign above the door promoting their combo meals starting at $3.69. The interior is small, with an overhead Hawaiian menu posted behind the steam table that comes with a range of Chinese entrees to choose from. My order was served in a Styrofoam container filled with fried rice, chow mein, half order of orange chicken, and half order of spicy fish ($3.69). I could have gotten another item for $4.99 but the container was already stacked to the brim with little room remaining. It was very nice of the server to offer me half orders on the main entree. The food was passable, with some gaps in flavor and nothing spectacular. The fried rice had a nice fluffy texture but could use more eggs and seasoning. The chow mein on the other hand met my expectations with good separation between the noodles that wasn't overwhelmed by vegetables like the ones from other fast food restaurants. The spicy fish could use a black bean sauce to ignite more flavors, and the orange chicken was pretty stiff and not something I would order again. For the price, there was little to complain about as the soy sauce and siracha on the table did their part in ameliorating some of the noted limitations that prospective diners should still take into consideration. There was some language barriers experienced with the server but she was very kind and generous with the servings. It wasn't the best Chinese fast food I've experienced, but it was enough to bring me back the next time I'm in the area. 2.5 stars for the overall experience. read more

Interesting place. I was attracted by the sign cause I like Hawaiian joints but then I saw that they were also a Chinese restaurant. I actually ventured in one other time but left because there were no customers inside which wasn't a good sign. On another occasion, I was pressed for time so I decided I'd brave it and try them out even when again, there were no customers inside. They serve various Hawaiian plates and I surmise Chinese cuisine as well. Although, at the time I went during dinner, they seemed to be lacking in the area of Chinese cuisine because all their metal bins were pretty empty having just a few scraps left. I guess they make the Chinese dishes per order during dinner and kept the buffet for lunch. It didn't matter because I was more interested in the Hawaiian dishes anyway and decided to go with the Hawaiian Barbecue plate which came with short ribs, chicken and some other steak. It normally comes with white rice and potato salad. I asked if they could replace the potato salad with a lettuce salad and the lady taking my order said she was willing to do that. I also asked if they had brown rice instead of white and the lady, who was most likely the owner, said that she could do that for me as well AND didn't charge extra for it. How's that for customer service? That was a relief! What I finally ended up with looked pretty good. All the meat had a nice flavor to it. Slightly on the fatty side and I'm sure, I wast getting the highest quality organic cuts but it was still decent for cheap fast food. The salad didn't have any dressing whatsoever and was just lettuce by itself so I asked if she had anything like miso dressing and after a few minutes, she brought me out a small bowl of what looked and tasted like miso dressing which I think they made from scratch just for me. I was definitely appreciative of that. The food here is good and the service is remarkable. If I'm in the area and had a hankering for Hawaiian cuisine, I'd certainly stop by here again. read more
