Another favorite of mine. The food is amazing and their menu is so diverse. You can mix and match anything you want and the food is served in paper trays. Adds to a very authentic bbq feel, the menu is on a big chalkboard and you select what you want and they bring it to your table. Overall great place other than some tricky parking! read more

This is real BBQ, I drove passed this spot numerous amounts of times not knowing what it really was until I found it on yelp. One day I was working out east and I wanted to try something different for lunch and this spot was highly recommended. Let me tell you, it didn't disappoint . I didn't order anything crazy. I started with 7 of the smoked Korean bbq wings and they were amazing. For the main meal I got the beef brisket sandwich with a side of Mac and cheese. Just writing about this now I want some of that mouth watering brisket. It was so moist and tender with just the right amount of fat. The Mac and cheese was basic but very good. Was out in Riverhead between appointments this past Friday and couldn't resist for lunch. During COVID, they are doing it all right: tables spaced out, masks and plexiglass at the register. They have a big menu but the woman who took my order was very helpful. Went with the combo of burnt ends and pastrami. She expertly recommended sauces for the meats. She was spot on. The meat and sauces were excellent. I had coleslaw and beans as my two sides. Again, they did not disappoint. The place has wonderful service, unbelievable barbecue meats and great choice of sides. Went here after a day at splash splash and if you aren't from the area and are out there for the day this place is a hidden gem. It's about five minutes down the road from the water park and slightly passed the outlets. Parking is a bit of a pain but you can get a spot across the street and in front of the restaurant. This place when you walk in makes it feel like you are walking into someone's home. Super clean and bright with a few tables and a small bar counter you can sit at. The service is amazing here and the staff is very friendly. When it comes to the food i had the MT Reuben with Cole slaw and i have to say it was in the top five of Reuben's i have had in a long time. My girlfriend had the Texan sandwich with the herb potatoes; these are more like mashed potatoes rather than roasted potatoes which for us was actually a nice surprise. The flavor of the meat on the sandwich and the potatoes was perfect! When it comes to price the value you find here you simply cant beat. The meats here are all outstanding, from chicken wings to pastrami. Perfectly cooked and ready fairly quickly. Sides of "kollards" and smoked beans weee my fave's, corn bread is light , which I loved, my wife not so much. Coleslaw is fresh and crunchy, but bland . Gotta say the burnt ends and NC style pulled pork blew me away! One quirky note- this place thrives on locals, and we're from "the city" which bothers no one else but one guy at the counter (?). We came here after hanging out in the lavender farms (Lavender By The Bay in Calverton) with our dog and just loved it. We're big fans of BBQ and have just about had a good amount of it all over the boroughs so we were pretty excited about a BBQ joint being nearby this far out in Long Island. BBQ: We both had combo platters which seems like the better deal if you just want to keep it to meats and sides and the lemonade. The other stuff looked good promising though. Pastrami: SO GOOD. You can taste and smell the pepper and smoke of the pastrami. The texture was great and I loved that I got a bit of the rub and the meat in every bite. Chicken (Alabama): I ordered the chicken, just cause we were sharing so much red meat between us and it can be really heavy on a hot day. Just to let you know, the chicken has mayo flavored into it (which is the base for an Alabama-style bbq sauce) so for people who don't like mayo, be on the lookout. It wasn't an actual smoked bbq chicken though, it tasted more like a pulled chicken with dressing. I loved it cause it helped cut through all the heavier sides. I didn't taste Just be mindful. Pulled Pork Shoulder: I liked it cause it was juicy and tender. My bf thought it was alright and wished flavor had hit him more. We had a bit of a debate about that ourselves. I believe the pork flavor was showcased and he wished there was more than just pork in its juice, like prominent seasonings. Beef Brisket MT 'Burnt Ends': Burnt ends are interpreted differently in every bbq joint. Sometimes burnt ends are just left as is so that you can taste the candied flavors of sauce on the crusty parts of the meat along with the rest. And some places slather some fresh bbq on top. What we had was a richly thick sauced piece of bbq but it didn't quite get that candied "burnt" quality to it. The sauce and smoke were strong but it never quite got the nice crustiness that sauced meat gets once it's been in a smoker forever. It definitely was a moist piece of meat but it did miss the mark on that trademark. Sides: All of our sides were great! I love the beans and the collards! The beans were so rich, sweet and smoky. And the collards were cooked so well, it eased me out of the heavy stuff. The cornbread was traditionally made in that it had actual corn in it and wasn't sweet like mainstream cornbread. It helped to sop up the sauce for sure. The mac and cheese was creamy and cheesy. A nice heaviness that everyone expects when it pairs with bbq. Would order all of these again in a heartbeat. Sauces: They gave sides of sauces for each order. SO ADDICTING. Smokey, sweet and tangy. Good add-ons for anything really. Atmosphere: Inside, the A/C was so lovely and the service was quite friendly and prompt. The eating area was spaced out so it didn't feel quite packed. We ate outside so that our dog could be with us and it was so nice to sit under the shade and let our dog recuperate from the sun. It's a real plus to go to places where you can bring your dog with you. Especially when the area in which they can hang out is still a lovely place to be in. Overall, I can't wait to come back here again. With or without the dog. I'm sure I'll finish out the rest of this menu before the year is done. It's that good. read more

We were heartily greeted by the owner, Dennis O'Leary, in spite of being super busy doing everything behind the front counter. He tends bar, takes orders, chats it up with customers, prepares desserts, takes your $$ & serves up really good, Southern (Alabama?) barbecue; amazing & busy multi-tasking. Know that, as a result, there will be a bit of a wait but it'll be worth your while. The menu is fairly extensive, kind of expensive, but all good. In fact, it appeared to us that local residents come here as much as non-locals. Served directly on a tray, the mac & cheese side dish was thick & cheesy, jalapeno pickles were a perfect complement to our well seasoned, really flavorful 'Bama chicken on Portuguese roll sandwiches, cole slaw was a good additive, as was the corn bread. After my experience at Lockhart Steakhouse in Dallas, my standards are pretty high for barbecue. I've also wanted to try restaurants near the court complex so I know the good lunch places when doing assignments here. I saw this spot in a Yelp search and decided to check it out. They definitely have a great view across the street from the restaurant with benches where you can sit, which seems great for the summer. Unfortunately, I went here in the winter so I didn't get to do that but the modest restaurant space was pretty nice and not crowded at lunchtime. I got the turkey breast, macaroni & cheese, baked beans and some local root beer. The turkey was comparable to what I had at Lockhart. It also stands alone; I didn't need barbecue sauce for it. The beans were also very good as well as the root beer. My only complaint was the macaroni & cheese was bland but it grew on me a little as I was eating the turkey breast. You also have to cross a major street to get here from where the lot is so make sure you look both ways and cross carefully if you park across the street vs. at the restaurant (I'm not sure if there was much parking adjacent to the restaurant since I was trying to get my food and get home in a timely manner). read more

Wow. I was not expecting to find this hideen gem. Peach sangria is very good. I was hes a to have it as we came for lunch but it wasn't overly sweet and a perfect pair to the bbq food. Also had a maple tree hard cider which I was surprised to find was every well made. The tea and lemonade were a good match, not sweet and mask the vodka very well. North Carolina pulled pork is amazing. Its a vinegar based style bbq. Brisket burnt ends were DELICIOUS. The bbq sauce used is soooo good. We ordered the wings and split it between Korean sauce and Alabama bbq sauce (listen to the waitress and go with the Korean sauce). Both sauces were delicious but the Korean was one of a kind. My family and I went to visit the Railroad Museum of Long Island last weekend and went to look for a quick lunch spot. This place popped up and the food was AMAZING! I was recently diagnosed with celiac disease and almost everything was gluten-free. I have also lived in the south for a few years so this bbq was as good as what I had down there. We ordered the Turkey, chicken wings (only the Korean sauce had gluten in it and the other choices were safe), rib, brisket, herb crushed potatoes, coleslaw, and lemonade. Tried this place for the first time, overall the food are good, the ribs are really good, meat falls off the bone and just enough spice and really flavorful; however, can't say the same on the chicken, it tastes bland and really dry. They did give you sauces for the chicken but just not enough the mask the dryness. The sides are good and fresh and the outdoor seating area is great! Leaving the Long Island aquarium and we were starving. There were so many places to choose from in the area but this place peaked our interest. A short drive away, we parked right in front on the street and could see people sitting down eating through the window at 2pm on a Thursday afternoon. A quaint little place with a menu on the wall. The young gentleman behind a small bar answered our questions and took our to-go order. I had the Texan sammich (brisket, caramelized onions & cheddar on sourdough) and the hubs built his own sammich (plain pulled chicken, caramelized onions and tomatoes on a Portuguese roll). Both came with a regular side. One corn bread and one herb crusted potatoes. The brisket sammich was $15.50. The build your own was $13. We waited at the bar for maybe 10 minutes and the food came out piping hot and fresh. I asked for a sweet BBQ sampler sauce which was provided. Upon paying, the young guy turned his screen around and asked us to tip. It felt awkward because we were put on the spot to add a suggested amount. My husband declined to put it on a card and we threw some cash into a tip jar. We got to the car and couldn't wait. The brisket sammich was big and amazing! I didn't want to endulge in the whole thing but I couldn't help myself. The bread was toasted goodness and the cheese and onions were the perfect accompaniment. The herb crusted potatoes were hot and I tried to love them but I did not (and I love potatoes). Way too many herbs for me and there was no "crust". It was just smashed potatoes with herbs. The pulled chicken sammich was also hot and fresh, but it was ordered "plain" so there's not a lot more to say about it. The cornbread was ok. The sample of the sauce we were given was very yummy. I put some on the brisket to taste. I saw that they had bread pudding so I got that to go for home. It was $6 and change. It had way too many raisins in the sauce that I did not eat but the bread pudding itself was slightly sweet and fresh. I enjoyed it much later, as this meal held me over all day. I didn't even eat dinner. The place was spotless. The people were kind. The food was hot and fresh. The prices were a tiny bit high for lunch but I don't mind paying for the things I just mentioned. We are all struggling to survive inflation these days, so I try to do my part in supporting the mom and pop's. I just wish they weren't so far away. I came here today after the rugged Maniac race and we were so hungry! The location has parking along the road and a small parking lot across the street. Don't park behind the restaurant that's someone's property. The restaurant was clean, stylish and relaxed vibe. They have outside seating. I was returning home from some business on Shelter Island and I heard about this BBQ place in Riverhead. We had a condo in Baiting Hollow, just north of here, for many years and past through here many times but never noticed it. This day I read some Yelp reviews about Mapletree BBQ, and thought "I think I'd like some good BBQ today". First, parking is a little difficult, park on the street or across the street in a small parking lot. I was fortunate enough to get a spot on the street in front of the restaurant. So my inside is pretty small. Wooden tables with rolls of paper towels and some BBQ sauces. No menus, you order off a chalk board, which is OK with me. In fact a woman claiming to be an owner was very helpful and made some good suggestions. So we pick what we want, pay, sit at a table and wait. Just a few minutes and food is on our table, and food it was. I had the brisket and my wife had the baby back ribs. Both very juicy and sauces were excellent. I've been on a BBQ kick lately and Mapletree BBQ is just what the doctor ordered. Next time in Riverhead you'll find me there for lunch. The reason for 4 stars is, first as I said, the place is very small. Also, and this is just a pet pieve for me, food comes in cardboard boxes on a tray. Just don't care for that concept. *** Before I begin I'll state that I am originally from the south so I know good BBQ and my opinion on this place is going to be a little biased because of it. Much like a person from NY would be biased about pizza from the south. Just ate here for the first time today. Walking in everything looks nice and clean and the staff was friendly and helpful. But I noticed something missing that all BBQ restaurants should have... that awesome bbq smell. The place didnt smell bad, it smelled normal but just didnt smell like BBQ. Me and my wife decided to order a few things so we could try this place out and give an honest opinion. We got the beef brisket, ribs, Carolina style pulled pork, slaw, potato salad, corn bread, baked beans and collard greens (they have them labeled kallards). The pulled pork and the brisket were both dry and had little flavor. Overall they were just ok. The ribs were better but still nothing exceptional. Potato salad was good but not really what I think of when I think potato salad. The coleslaw was a little bland, needed salt, pepper, vinegar and sugar. The cornbread was more like cake than corn bread. The baked beans were kinda weird and gross. They were more like a sweet flavored chili with no meat, definitely not baked beans. I am writing a separate paragraph about the collard greens because they were just that bad. The collard greens were definitely not cooked correctly and you can tell they were made by a yankee because no southern cook would ever send those out and call them collards. Not to mention they called them "Kallards" so I'm not 100% sure that they were actually collard greens and not kale, which is gross. The last thing we need to discuss is the BBQ sauces. They have 3: spicy, sweet and Alabama sauce. The spicy and sweet sauces are a little backwards. The spicy sauce is a ketchup based and the sweet is a vinegar based... these sauces would improve if they switched this up. The Alabama sauce is not really a BBQ sauce because it is a creamy horseradish sauce but it was good on the brisket. The last thing I have to say about the sauces is, where is the mustard BBQ sauce? I know this is the north and yellow mustard ain't all that popular but no good BBQ restaurant can go without a mustard based BBQ sauce. Overall this place was ok but definitely not good BBQ. I was going to give this place 3 stars due to the friendly staff, but I had to take it back down to a 2 because of those collard greens. If you have never had BBQ then you might like this place because you dont know what to expect. But if you dont like it dont let this place turn you away from BBQ because this place is definitely not what BBQ is. read more
