I was returning home from some business on Shelter Island and I heard about this BBQ place in Riverhead. We had a condo in Baiting Hollow, just north of here, for many years and past through here many times but never noticed it. This day I read some Yelp reviews about Mapletree BBQ, and thought "I think I'd like some good BBQ today". First, parking is a little difficult, park on the street or across the street in a small parking lot. I was fortunate enough to get a spot on the street in front of the restaurant. So my inside is pretty small. Wooden tables with rolls of paper towels and some BBQ sauces. No menus, you order off a chalk board, which is OK with me. In fact a woman claiming to be an owner was very helpful and made some good suggestions. So we pick what we want, pay, sit at a table and wait. Just a few minutes and food is on our table, and food it was. I had the brisket and my wife had the baby back ribs. Both very juicy and sauces were excellent. I've been on a BBQ kick lately and Mapletree BBQ is just what the doctor ordered. Next time in Riverhead you'll find me there for lunch. The reason for 4 stars is, first as I said, the place is very small. Also, and this is just a pet pieve for me, food comes in cardboard boxes on a tray. Just don't care for that concept. *** Before I begin I'll state that I am originally from the south so I know good BBQ and my opinion on this place is going to be a little biased because of it. Much like a person from NY would be biased about pizza from the south. Just ate here for the first time today. Walking in everything looks nice and clean and the staff was friendly and helpful. But I noticed something missing that all BBQ restaurants should have... that awesome bbq smell. The place didnt smell bad, it smelled normal but just didnt smell like BBQ. Me and my wife decided to order a few things so we could try this place out and give an honest opinion. We got the beef brisket, ribs, Carolina style pulled pork, slaw, potato salad, corn bread, baked beans and collard greens (they have them labeled kallards). The pulled pork and the brisket were both dry and had little flavor. Overall they were just ok. The ribs were better but still nothing exceptional. Potato salad was good but not really what I think of when I think potato salad. The coleslaw was a little bland, needed salt, pepper, vinegar and sugar. The cornbread was more like cake than corn bread. The baked beans were kinda weird and gross. They were more like a sweet flavored chili with no meat, definitely not baked beans. I am writing a separate paragraph about the collard greens because they were just that bad. The collard greens were definitely not cooked correctly and you can tell they were made by a yankee because no southern cook would ever send those out and call them collards. Not to mention they called them "Kallards" so I'm not 100% sure that they were actually collard greens and not kale, which is gross. The last thing we need to discuss is the BBQ sauces. They have 3: spicy, sweet and Alabama sauce. The spicy and sweet sauces are a little backwards. The spicy sauce is a ketchup based and the sweet is a vinegar based... these sauces would improve if they switched this up. The Alabama sauce is not really a BBQ sauce because it is a creamy horseradish sauce but it was good on the brisket. The last thing I have to say about the sauces is, where is the mustard BBQ sauce? I know this is the north and yellow mustard ain't all that popular but no good BBQ restaurant can go without a mustard based BBQ sauce. Overall this place was ok but definitely not good BBQ. I was going to give this place 3 stars due to the friendly staff, but I had to take it back down to a 2 because of those collard greens. If you have never had BBQ then you might like this place because you dont know what to expect. But if you dont like it dont let this place turn you away from BBQ because this place is definitely not what BBQ is. read more

My wife was a little leery to try a new spot in Riverhead, the last spot was an old greasy spoon. Not to fear, I have a new spot my dear. (Stink eye coming my way) When I look at any new spot, my first thought is how will I feed a family of four? It's a knee jerk reaction, both my boys are working and have girl friends. Tastefully decorated as a BBQ joint, it's looks like a converted house with nice size tables. There was a mom holding a new born, its not a Texas roadhouse but perfect for families. Secondly, Like BBQ? The folks at Maple Tree BBQ are serving meats that are antibiotic free. There are also gluten free items if you're gluten sensitive. It's Sunday night and came to Maple Tree BBQ after shopping at Tanger Outlets. My Yelp Elite bud said to get the beans. I walk in and scream BEANS! The owner behind the counter said, I'm very sorry but we're out of a lot of food like beans. Aw dang. Not a problem, May I have the pulled Pork shoulder platter and my wife will have the pulled pork tacos. Oh yeah, and one of those beers on tap. My wifes tacos? Bangin'. The taco shells were soft corn shells, the pork was juicy and succulent and the pickled onions pulled it all together. My pulled pork platter came with fresh tasting cole slaw. My pulled pork was the same as my wifes, tasty and juicy. A perfect ending to our day. Maple Tree, you lost a star for running out of food and giving us limited options. Only had takeout so I can't speak to a dine in experience. Our friends live near here and love it. When we come to visit, they often get it. I'm often left disappointed. So I've had their pulled pork- 2 styles- NC which is a more vinegar based sauce and another. Just way too greasy for me!! Maybe it's because it's in a to go container and it traps it all but that doesn't mean it's not there! In house maybe on a plate or bun, it would soak it up!? The pulled chicken is super tender and moist- I will give them that. It does appear they put some kind of white sauce in that, so I assume that's what keeps it moist. Got called for Jury Duty and decided it was time to revisit! Had an hour and half break and was starved. Place was very busy, long line, tables full! Good sign! Only problem was one very nice man taking orders and one hardworking gal running out orders!! Service was slow and I had to hustle to make it back to court! The food was great though, I grabbed a seat at the bar and ordered the Maple Reuben which was terrific along with fries which were fresh out of the fryer! Value is great as portions are huge! The atmosphere and food is really nice here. The quality and price of the food is good. I got the meat combo with 2 small sides for $19. Brisket is soft - you don't need a knife to cut it, just use your fork. Ribs were a little dry for my liking, but that may just be the style from smoked ribs. They had 2 BBQ sauces on the table, and both were delicious. They really enhanced the flavor of the ribs and brisket (which were both a little bland on flavor without the BBQ sauce). I enjoyed my sides: Cole slaw was fresh and not overdone with mayo, and pickles were perfectly tart to cut the fattiness of the meats. Very good place for bbq on the east end. Stopped in here on a VERY slow Tuesday evening. It was just a bit too late in the day and too cool to sit out at one of the picnic tables on the river, which would be totally awesome to do during warmer weather. I had the two meat combo plate with brisket and ribs and sides of baked beans and roasted sweet potatoes. Everyone knows that you have to have brisket and ribs if you're going to attempt to judge a BBQ joint. The brisket was top notch. Tender, juicy, flavorful. Five stars. The ribs were good, not great. If anything, a bit undercooked, which is way better than overcooked. They had nice flavor but didn't stand out. 3.5 stars. Baked beans were pretty bland while the roasted sweet potatoes were excellent. Also sampled the cornbread which was above average. Counter service was good. The owner (at least I think he's the owner) came by to check on us and then ran out from behind the bar to take my dirty trays so I didn't have to do much cleanup. All in all, I'll definitely come back here. Came to this place for lunch after visiting the Long Island Aquarium down the road! They have plenty of outdoor seating so it was perfect to eat there and practice social distancing. We ordered two combo meat platters ($18 and $20 depending on the meat) so we could try a variety of their meats. We ordered texas beef brisket, north carolina pulled pork, salmon and the brisket burnt ends. For sides, we ordered cole slaw, herb crushed potatoes and mac and cheese. Our favorites were the pulled pork and the burnt ends! Both were filled with flavor and was delicious! The salmon was a tad dry and the beef brisket was alright. I had a pulled pork taco, which was very flavorful and tasty. The pork was prepared well. Unfortunately, the soft tortilla fell apart when I attempted to pick up the taco. And the amount of meat included in the taco was very underwhelming. I also had the Texas beef brisket sandwich. This was a fresh, tasty sandwich with a good amount of meat... however, it was just roast beef, this was not brisket, nevermind Texas style barbecue brisket. As such, this was disappointing. But, most New Yorkers have never been to Dayne's, Franklin Barbecue, Vaquero's, etc (famous barbecue places in Texas). If you want a decent sandwich on par with an average Long Island diner, give it a try. If you want real barbecue that was hickory or oak smoked at 240F for 16+ hours, I would look elsewhere. I appreciate the reply from the owner. Again, the food was fresh, tasty, and well prepared. I respect and appreciate that. However, I stand behind my original comment in regards to the "Texas Beef Brisket" sandwich. A nice sandwich with a generous serving of meat, however it's vastly different from Texas brisket that's been smoked 16+ hours at 240 or so degrees in an offset smoker. Be well! read more
