Decent clean but expensive. Ribs are hit and miss because of fatty and untrimmed. Sometimes no fat sometimes alot, but if you ask they will fix it and exchange them. I am sorry to said the only thing that is good is the ribs. If you want any other stuff, I wouldn't recommend coming here. It is a really hidden location but not a gem. This is a walk up to the counter and order then pay and grab any seats that you like. They will give you a small stand with number on it and bring the food to you afterward. The price here, it is really reasonable but comparing the quality of food, I am disappointed. The food is about the equivalent to price here. I got the combination of two meats (burnt end beef and pastrami) with two small sides cost 15 dollars. The pastrami was really dry and way too salty. If it was on a bun or a sandwich, it would be better but still too dry. The brunt end beef comes in the tomato like sauce and that tasted okay. This place was great up to a year ago. Delicious hot fresh food. But since the fall, I don't know what happened. They must have changed the chef. The food doesn't have that same great flavor that it used to. Yesterday, everything was cold. The Mac and cheese looks like it come out of a box. The baked beans were hard and undercooked. And no Smokey flavor that they used to have. Totally unacceptable for a rib spot. This place used to be our favorite spot. We used to come here a few nights a week. We were it's biggest fans. That's why we are so disappointed with the direction the food took. Even the corn bread sucks. It's sad. I hope they can get back to how they were early in 2019. This place has both indoor and outdoor seating, with outdoor seating found in the back, as well as in the front (across the street by the lake). If it's a nice day outside, it's probably better to take your food and sit in the outdoor seating across the street. The outdoor seating in the back of the restaurant has a minor bee issue. While we were there, there were at least 1-2 bees near us or on our food. Another person that sat about 3 tables from us got stung on his finger. It's a nuisance while trying to enjoy your food. We decided to come here for dinner after spending a day shopping at tanger outlet. This place is only a few miles away and there's plenty of parking outside the restaurant, as well as a parking lot across the street. This is a self serve kind of place. You order and pay for your food at the counter and grab any table you want and wait. When you finish, you throw out your own trash. Here's what we got: 1. St. Louis ribs half rack $15 - the meat was so tender that it slides right off the bone and the flavor was good too (not too sweet or salty like other places). Definitely get this! 2. Combo meats platter $15 for two 12oz meats and a choice of one medium side or two small sides- we got beef brisket burnt ends and maple tree pastrami. The pastrami was hard and super salty. The burnt ends was really salty too with some kind of weird chili flavored sauce? Maybe I chose the wrong meats... We opted for two small sides (coleslaw and herb crusted potatoes). The food was incredibly bland; the order took over 35 minutes to receive (after being told it would take 15 minutes), and the owner(?) was yelling at employees in front of all of the customers for accidentally sending out the wrong DoorDash order. We thought maybe adding some sweet or "Alabama" sauce would help, but those were both very runny and lacking any sort of distinguished flavor. The sides were all basic - not bad, but nothing stood out. SERVICE: We ordered at 6:25pm and didn't walk out with our food until after 7pm...and that was *after* I asked for them to check in on my order to figure out what was taking so long. Add to it that several of the employees were arguing and bickering with each other about who was at fault. And to top it off, the owner was chewing out his staff with no regard for who was around. Not that many BBQ places make pastrami. We were having a party for 18 people and I asked Maple Tree to cater. We had pastrami, burnt ends, brisket, macaroni and cheese, smoked chicken, sweet potatoes, garden salad and baked beans. Dennis, the owner, delivered everything. It was all excellent. We found this place on Yelp after going to a pumpkin patch farm in the area. I had to make sure that this place was dog friendly and that they had outdoor seating, which they did! So it's already a win win for Maple Tree BBQ! Their parking lot is right across the street so make sure to check the signs and the arrows to avoid making a u-turn. When you walk in, you go to the counter and order the food yourself. Then you're given a number and they bring the food to you. I ordered the meat combo platter for $15. It came with 2 sides of meat, and 2 small sides. It's a great price for the portion and boy, did this food hit the spot! The pulled pork was very flavorful and juicy, I definitely recommend it! The brisket was a little dry so I ended up using their house sauce with it. The sides that came with it were very standard, good flavor and nothing super wow about it. Although, their Mac and cheese was very creamy and you can't go wrong with that! The staff were super friendly and even though we were sitting outside, they came out very often to check on us to see if we needed anything. They were also sweet enough to offer some water to my pup. I have been there twice. Sorry to say both times was disappointing. I pass this establishment twice a day and the bellowing smoke from the smoker out back is intoxicating. However, I personally feel for what you actually get its too expensive and poor prepared and served. Both times I had the Rib Platter for $13.00, you get 3 Ribs and either 2 small sides or one medium side. *The Ribs were tasty but small. *The beans in the baked beans were more than al dente. (Either under-cooked or mixed with a batch drying out?) *The medium size side dish appeared to be a small serving. *The Chicken Wings were served with the splash of the BBQ on the bottom of the paper serving container with the wings on top. Was not tossed in sauce. My husband and I took a drive out to Riverhead to try Maple Tree--we were not disappointed! He had the combo platter (double ribs), Mac and cheese and potato salad. The ribs fell right off the bone and were super tender. They could've used a bit more sauce, either on the ribs or on the side. The sauces on the side were served in small dipping cups and were very tasty. He also tried a chicken wing with Korean BBQ sauce, which was recommended by the man at the register. This was probably his favorite! Potato salad was very good, as well. The potatoes were cooked perfectly. I had the Texan sandwich with Mac and cheese and corn bread. The sandwich was delicious and loaded with brisket. The caramelized onions added a perfect flavor. The Mac and cheese was classic homestyle and the cornbread was delicious, too! The decor in the restaurant was very cozy and it smelled like amazing barbecue as soon as we walked in. We felt the portions were generous, especially the sides. Came here for the first time and got the beef brisket burnt ends platter and chose Mac and cheese and baked beans as my sides. My boyfriend got the ribs platter with the same sides. The burnt ends were smoky and tender. My mac and cheese was a little too watery for me I wish it was a little creamier and the baked beans were okay. The star of the show was the ribs. The ribs platter only comes with about three ribs, but they were ridiculous. So so good! The meat was fall off the bone tender and the dry rub was phenomenal. I also tried their brownie which was very good as well. I'll definitely be coming back when I crave BBQ! Edit: came back here and got a half rack of ribs with a side of mac and cheese. The mac and cheese was better than the first time I came here and the ribs were even better than I remembered them being. I think this is the best place to go for ribs on Long Island. Can't believe I didn't have a review for Maple Tree. I like this place so much I make excuses to go to Riverhead just so can pop in for a bite. Love the Brisket. Moist, meaty, smokey and not overly fatty. If you leave a 1" fat cap on brisket it's easy to have it be moist. But MT avoids that and that a benefit for you, and I. Love the smoked wings. Insider tip; don'rt even sauce them. The sauce is good and interesting, as you won't see this type of Korean BBQ sauce everywhere. However, if you really want to appreciate the depth of flavor a smoked wing delivers, skip the dressing. Love the St. Louis ribs. Like the brisket, smoky and meaty. Just the right amount of pull is needed to render the meat from the bone. Again the dry rub is pretty spot on and a little of their sauce only makes things better. I don't know if they make the Slaw in house, but regardless it a decent blend. I could stand a little more vinegar but my acid tolerance is pretty high. I recognize they can't cater everything for my tastes (oh, that the world would or could). The real only Wah, Wah moment for me at Maple Tree is the cornbread. IMO it's too "cakey" and not nearly corny enough. I just do't feel any grit. Even buttered up it's just to plain for me. It's sad for me cause i love ending my BBQ with a good piece of cornbread. the staff here is warm and welcoming too. Never had a bad experience with them, even after I called in a pickup order and failed to show up for over an hour (last client meeting took a little longer than expected). If you are in or about Riverhead an have the hankering for BBQ you need to stop at "the Tree" (I just coined that). Even try the cornbread, just cause it misses for me doesn't mean it won't tickle your taste buds. But if you are a meat-a-tarian, you will not be disappointed. read more
