Came out to eat based upon overall positive reviews. Some people had claimed it to be possibly the best BBQ on LI- it was a far cry from it.. granted they may have had an off night. Ordered the smoked wings, pastrami, brisket, and Southwestern turkey as main courses with sides of corn bread, collard greens, and Mac n cheese. Pretty much everything was lacking flavor. The only saving grace was the three varieties of house made sauces they offer which were sweet bbq, spicy bbq and a white horseradish type sauce called Alabama sauce which were all pretty solid. First time here and I was very very happy with my food. At first it seemed a little disorganized to me because we weren't sure if we would be served or if we had to go up to the counter and order our food. We learned that they were short staffed tonight but it was all OK because the service was good once the crowd died down a bit. Plus, the food was so delicious. My husband had the brisket and pastrami, mac & cheese and beans and he said it was outrageous. And he is a BBQ snob. I know it's bizarre but I ordered the mussels. They were yummy and no sand!! My huge mussel pet peeve. The broth left behind was divine with the hand cut fries. The mussels were delicious, with a little bit of kick. The flavor was reminiscent of buffalo wings. I also ordered the Shrimp and Corn chowder. Outstanding. Perfectly flavored, not too salty with a bit of cayenne. Shrimpy and corny yumminess. We also ordered the cole slaw which had an Asian flavor to it because it was made with sesame oil. Very tasty lunch there were three of us. first timers, i had sliders and smoked wings. sliders were tasty but very small. did get to taste different items, pulled pork, brisket tips and pulled chicken. wings where different Smoked but little under cooked for my liking on inside. not a repeat player. Wife had smoked turkey with Cole slaw side and it was very tasty and good. They have very good food here, it's just that the restaurant has some problems that they should fix. The restaurant is cute, but I'm not too crazy about their renovations. They have a large counter where they store all of their specials. The menu is interesting, departing from typical BBQ. Pricing isn't bad, but the portions aren't huge. The service is alright, maybe they could work together a little more. Their pastrami is excellent, cooked fresh. It is seasoned perfectly and isn't too fatty. I had ordered the North Carolina pulled pork combination, which came with two sides. The pulled pork was drenched with vinegar to the point that it completely eliminated any natural flavors from the pork. If you are used to this kind of pulled pork (which is very rare at BBQ restaurants) order this, since I am pretty sure it was executed well. But, they should have specified that the pulled pork is cooked with vinegar, since I have seen many BBQ joints claim that they serve North Carolina pulled pork and it is just regular pork. I ordered grilled vegetables as one of my sides, which was smothered in vinegar as well to the point that the vegetables were falling apart. At least there was a nice variety of vegetables. Plus, my second side of fries never came, since there was a "forgetful" chef in the back who forgot about them. At least they were taken off the bill. For a successful BBQ place, I wouldn't expect such beginner mistakes. read more

While pumpkin picking in Riverhead at Stakeys looked up a place to eat. Found Maple Tree BBQ listed as a local place. With the reviews as good as they were decided to go with my wife and son and let me tell you OMG what delicious BBQ. We all had the St Louis ribs, I had the brisket as well and it was unbelievable cooked to perfection not overly smoked and just the right amount of seasoning so you can taste the quality of the meat used. The side dishes which we had the to die for beans, the OMG Mac and cheese,the potatoe salad, and the Coleslaw.The food was amazing and the staff was so accommodating and friendly will definitely go back when in the mood for excellent BBQ read more

Pretty cute place on the smaller side. The food was good, it had some delicious dishes. We ordered the smoked chicken wings and they were way to smokey and chard basically chewed on that smoke flavor it was completely undetectable that they were chicken wings sadly we left most of them. Also ordered ribs which were fall off the bone delicious so much flavor basically melt in your mouth goodness. Burnt end also delicious had a great taste. The pulled pork was ok a little dry. For sides we had the kallards which were very oily, the mac and cheese was over cooked so much so that the macaroni was almost paste, the potatoe salad was good lighter and crunchier than expected and last sweet jalapeño pickles which were so tasty and refreshing. So I last reviewed this place in regards to when the Judges ran it, but I've been back multiple times since Dennis and his wife picked it up and it's just as great as it's always been. The food still carries an equal amount of quality and flavor as it previously did and in fact some things taste even better (I didn't think that was possible before I tried the updated menu.) They've kept a lot of the same previous options and made the menu more standardized now. They also have some of their own specialities on the board too, but I've yet to try them because it's hard for me to stray away from the classics which taste too damn good. All in all this place remains with the same excellence it's always had and is still my favorite place to get some good BBQ food on Long Island. Additionally it's nice to see Dennis around most of the time, working hard with his employees too. The biggest difference between the place now and before is it's a little more spacious with more tables to sit down and eat inside and they removed the hot trays in the front and do all the cooking out back. read more

Went based on Yelp reviews and was sorely disappointed. We had the pulled pork, which was the tastiest of the burnt ends and Alabama chicken also ordered (Never had chicken in horseradish sauce and hope I never do again). All were chewed up and steeped in sauce to mask the dryness of the meat. Beans were ok as a side. The menu is more extensive but we won't be coming back to try it. read more

Outstanding!!! When we walked in after a short drive from the Tanger Outlets, the owner asked us if it was our first time here, which it was, and described all of the meat and side dishes and gave us very generous portions to try of those we were interested in. Everything we tried was great but you can't have it all, so I selected a North Carolina pulled pork, which is a little spicy, and my wife had a Texas brisket sandwich which was less spicy but very tasty and tender. We both enjoyed everything and my wife and I both got shrimp and corn chowder to go, plus I got shredded chicken chili to go. Staff very friendly and professional. I would give 6 stars if I could. We found this place through Yelp on Labor Day weekend, after realizing that the Tanger Oulets were too crowded. Everyone who didn't go to the beach apparently had the same idea we did. OK, time for lunch. The existing reviews warned us we had to park across the street and dodge cars on Route 25. Fine, you gotta risk it to get the brisket. Barbecue's caught on big-time in the NY area in the last few years. A couple I met at a BBQ joint in San Diego this July told me, "We bet you can't get BBQ like this in New York!". Umm, yes I can, I work near Hill Country and Blue Smoke in Manhattan, I can walk up to Daisy May's, plus we've got Mabel's Smokehouse and Dinosaur BBQ in Brooklyn, then there's Dallas BBQ in Queens, and in Western Long Island there's Smokin' Al's and Famous Dave's and Smokey Bones. Closest to us is Slide BBQ in Maspeth, but if you read my review, you'll learn why I haven't gone back there. It's reached a point where if you want good BBQ in New York, you have to think about what kind you want. Do you feel like Texas-style? Kansas City style, or Carolina? Because you don't really get to tell a chef or pitmaster what style to cook in. Which brings me to Maple Tree, where they serve Texas brisket, Carolina pulled pork, and NY pastrami on the same menu. To BBQ purists this may seem inconsistent, but on the up side, you can get different meats cooked in different ways here. Ideally, the chef should be serving the best mix from all the different regions. Carolina BBQ relies on vinegar-based sauces, and if this isn't your thing, I'd say do what I did, and get a platter with the Texas brisket and the awesome NY pastrami. We also got smoked chicken wings, and they came with three sauces: sweet BBQ, spicy BBQ and creamy horseradish. I used the horseradish on my brisket and just avoided the other sauces. Didn't need them. Supplying them on the side at least gives you options, instead of slathering your meat with a vinegary sauce you may not like. For sides I got the beans and the Mac & Cheese. My wife thought the Mac was bland, but I thought it was fine. She found her herb-crushed potatoes bland too, and for some reason there was no salt shaker on the table. Why not? I can see that if you're proud of your food you might not think it needs salt, but it would have been nice for her to be able to season her potatoes to her taste. I think this is the kind of place you need to visit a few times, try a lot of different meats in combination with different sauces, and find the ones you like the best. Between turkey and ribs and even smoked salmon, there's probably something here for everyone, it's just a matter of discovering it, which should be part of the fun. They seemed a little short-staffed when we were there, which made taking the orders at the tables difficult, but we didn't mind ordering at the counter. The solution seems simple, just have everyone order at the counter and give each person a number on a stand, then bring the food to their table when it's ready. I know a few BBQ restaurants that do this, and it would free up another person to put plates together instead of visiting the customers at the tables. Then just put up a sign telling everyone to order at the counter, this would prevent the manager from needing to point out over and over that it's going to take a long time to get a waiter over to people. read more

A jewel of an establishment with the best bbq! It literally is a hole in the wall establishment that one might pass by but don't pass it by at all. The bbq is comparable to any bbq restaurant in North Carolina, beautifully decorated quarters, great and quick service. Incredibly moist fall off the bone brisket, St. Louis ribs, pulled pork and pastrami. Super potato salad and jalapeño pickles. Also great drinks like iced-t and sangria. I absolutely enjoyed them. They were moist, tender, and smokey. The BBQ sauce was not very spicy hot but very full of flavor! When you crave BBQ. Maple tree not only satisfies, they delight! Popped in last Friday. They were about to close but stayed open for us! We were greeted by lovely staff, who helped us choose out platters. Ribs were divine. Rainbow slaw was delicious and refreshing. What a pleasant surprise! The food was terrific, original, and produced with a lot of thought. (We know that because we talked with one of the owners, who checked in with us regularly to make sure we had everything we needed). If we had one suggestion, it would be that the ribs could be more fall-off-the-bone tender, but everything tasted delicious. The burnt ends, pulled pork, and beans were really good, and those sweet potato fries were a little bit of heaven. We will definitely go back!
