I asked upon arrival if the Rosé could be put on ice. The woman who greeted me asked if I had reservations. I said No. She put up a fuss... NO Reservation??? It's Friday night! You need a reservation! I explained that the man on the phone said "No reservations required on Friday night". She fussed even more, and denied that what I said could be true. She begrudgingly gave me a table for two in the middle of the restaurant. I asked if I could switch to a banquette table, since the restaurant was empty. She was incredulous and scolded me like I was a child. "What? You want to sit at a premium table with No Reservation? You are lucky just to get a table!!!" I put my wine on the tipsy tabletop (a tray balanced on a small table). My Rosé was not put on ice. FYI: I worked in restaurants throughout college, from salad-bars to fine dining, and everywhere in between. I worked in upscale and fine-dining restaurants as an adult to supplement my income when my business was on the rocks and I couldn't make ends meet. So I know a little about customer service... About 15 minutes later I flagged down a server who was setting up the nearby buffet. I asked if he could put my Rosé on ice. He said OK. It never happened. When I chose this restaurant, I saw the photos online, and looked forward to a cozy place with sitar-infused Middle-Eastern music. Instead, the music was cranked up really loud, and I would describe it as 'modern-Moroccan'. I felt like I was a cheesy club. The ceiling spotlights were bright, and it was NOT a relaxing, cozy experience. I REALLY WANTED TO LEAVE! If I were more familiar with the area and wasn't meeting a friend, I would have gotten up and left. I checked email, etc, and my friend was caught up very late at work. About 15 minutes later I asked ANOTHER server for an ice bucket. He was friendly and responsive. However, he placed the wine bucket very off-center on the wobbly tray-table... yikes. I'm surprised it didn't topple over. The restaurant filled up. My friend finally arrived and was a bit freaked out by the bright lights and loud music (PS, he's also a D.J.). I mentioned that I was disappointed, and apologized for the ambiance. He said "You chose this place!" NEXT: I was looking forward to ordering Baba Ghanoush, Hummus, and Tzatziki, Falafel, and Chicken Kebabs, a la Carte. The menu wasn't what I read online. I inquired with the server. Sadly, it was NOT the same man who kindly put my Rosé on ice. Apparently, Friday nights are $25 buffet or $35 minimum order, (I don't remember). I told the server I don't eat big meals, but wanted to sample smaller dishes. He said $35 (or whatever price), ENTREE or BUFFET ONLY on weekends. Once again, NO MENTION OF THE FRIDAY NIGHT RULES ONLINE, or on the menu. Having worked in restaurants, I don't do buffets... Leaving food open to any passersbys, drying out on canned burners... People call me paranoid, but I'm not paying for that. (Now it's 8/9/20. Hello Covid-19! Buffet anyone???) P.S. If you don't order the minimum amount, they will charge you that price anyway. BTW. We went there on friday night. Chicken n lamb were tender n tasty. Ambience was dark n cozy which i didnt like as we cudnt eat comfortably. Belly dancing was only for 10mins n she was picking guests to dance with her. It wud have been better if she showed more of her moves. Before I begin my review I have to tell you this place is VERY easy to miss when driving because it comes up immediately after the Route 80 underpass in a non-distinct shopping strip where everything is closed and dark by the time you go for dinner so take caution not to pass it up. Last night was my second visit after a few years and this place is just as incredible as it was then. On Fris and Sat nights they have 2 scheduled seating times 6-9pm and 9-midnight that includes a belly dancing show ($2 extra pp w/ 18% tip included). The seating is also on large couches that wrap around the entire place so you are sitting cozily next to strangers w/ a platter in front of you where your food is served for parties of 2 (no individual servings). There is no choice in any of this so if this not your cup of tea, don't go but be forewarned, you are missing the BEST Morrocan food and experience anywhere. The place is beautifully decorated in traditional Morrocan style with large couches that stretch the entire dining area with paintings and tapestries throughout. First off, my fav thing about any place including this one is that its BYO. You are given a choice of 2 meals, The Royal Feast which includes a salad; a dip platter w/ hot pita and hummus, baba ganoush, tabbouleh, and sauteed eggplant and tomatoes; falafel; a choice of entree (shared) we got the mixed grill with chicken, kofta (beef) and sirloin over rice and veggies and a dessert of fresh fruit and a couple of phyllo dough topped with whipped cream, peanuts and chocolate drizzle. All this for $29 /pp and the portions are HUGE!! The second choice is The Sultan's Table for $36/pp which instead of the falafel includes a shrimp kebab app, a Morrocan beef cigar wrapped in phlyllo and spiced with cinnamon and couscous w/veggies along w/ everything else in The Royal Feast. Each time I went I had each and it is all 1000% fabulous from beginning to end! Super fresh and homemade with pure love. Make sure if you come here on a Fri or Sat you are not in any rush because it's an experience meant to be stretched out over 3 hrs and between the dip platter and dinner is when the belly dancing takes place so service slows. This place lives up to the reviews from others. My friends and I went here to celebrate my birthday recently, and I had an amazing time. The hosts. Waitress, and honestly the entire staff was kind and went out there way to make sure we enjoyed ourselves. We did a family style type dinner and everything was yummy! You gotta try the cigar rolls! If you go on a Friday night they have belly dancing. I would post the video of me dancing but we save that for another time lol. There is nothing I don't love about this restaurant. The lush decor resembles an exotic opium palace (in the middle of NJ...hmm), the music is so contagious that people are continually compelled to get up and dance, even in the midst of their meals, and the bellydancers are a fun and entertaining addition to the evening. The Moroccan food is always good...we normally get samplers of almost everything on the menu, and the portions are large enough that even large groups of 20 or so are satisfied. Nestled in an inconspicuous little strip mall area, this place is somewhere you'd only know about through word of mouth (or Yelp). ~ Decor ~ The space is dominated by well decorated bench seating geared towards large groups. There is plenty of room for the Friday and Saturday night belly dancer to perform her routines and for people to navigate. Most of the eating area is essentially large trays atop low tables. While it may look nice, the height makes eat awkward as you're forced to bend over while spreading your legs as your legs can't fit under the table (how's that sound for an eating experience?). To add to the experience, the table is crowded with platters and trays. I found myself having to eat from a plate that was located under a raised tray. ~ Food ~ Now for the good stuff. The food was amazing. Almost everything from the hummus and babaganoush tray to the dessert was excellent from both a taste and texture standpoint. They also don't shy away from portions. For the entrees, I would aim for any of the slower cooked dishes, either lamb dish or any of the food prepared in the tajine. The meat on these have been completely broken down. The marrow in the lamb bone has been melted out and into the food. The Moroccan chicken, unfortunately, was completely dry. The tea and dessert were also amazing. Mint and honey made for a soothing, mellow experience. The dessert consisted of fresh fruits with a fried tortilla type chip covered with chocolate and peanuts. ~ Belly Dancer ~ How can you not love a good belly dancer? She worked the room with a number of routines including a tray with a lit candle on her head and Isis wings. I LOVED this place! Went with a group of 4 and had a wonderful time. You have to make reservations at least 4-5 days in advance for the weekend because this place always gets packed. The decor is very traditional and cozy with plush seats all around the place and large gold tables on which the food is served. The food is FANTASTIC. We got one of the weekend specials ( I think you have to order these on weekends during the belly dancing) which included a appetizer platter with hummus, baba ganoush, tabouli, and a few other things with pita bread, falafels, main entree (you get to choose) and dessert- all of this was only $29/person. It's BYOB which is also very nice and saves quite a bit of dinero. The belly dancer came out around 9:30 and made the evening a ton of fun. She danced at first but then involved the audience by inviting people up to dance with her and teaching us a few moves. After she is done the DJ continues to play music and you can get up and dance if you'd like. A lot of people were up having a good time at this point!! Overall I give this place 4 stars because it took a while for our server to warm up to us. I don't know if it was because of a problem with our reservation or what but he was a little cold at first. So the idea was some where different, a little exotic, and belly dancing. Those were the things on the list for a birthday get together and Marakesh delivered. It's a classic example of dont let the outside fool you, with an exterior cascade that doesn't reflect the novel interior. The layout is really nice and doesn't have the usual restaurant(y) feel to it. We all thought that the only way they could improve the place would be to go with just cushions on the floor for seating and little tents around the party tables lol. The majority of the staff was really nice, there was one attendant that seemed a bit snippy but he wasn't the main person servicing our table so it wasn't a big deal. In fact our waitress was really nice and even got me a Fez to take some pictures with. The food was served promptly and it was really good with a few things that I never had before that were a pleasant surprise. If going in a small group then the Sultans table platter is a good idea to go with it since it brings a lot of food. The entertainment was also a lot of fun, the belly dancer was really nice and talented and later on the DJ played a lot of great foreign music that was fun to dance to. This was my first experience with Moroccan food, I didn't think anything was really superb here. This place has a decent atmosphere and a belly dancer that comes out on weekends for a show. I noticed that when the belly dancer had finished, she walked into the back without picking the money up that the patrons threw. I then saw the owner walk over to collect the money, and put most of it in her pocket. After that she gave the dancer just a few singles of the 30 or 40 dollars that were thrown. On top of that, every person that is present when the dancer comes out is charged a 2 dollar fee. There is also included gratuity and a 25 dollar per person minimum. I'd say this place is a total rip off, and due to the fact that I watched patrons tip the dancer just to have the owner pocket the money I will surely not return. Came in with a party of 8. Restaurant was empty when we arrived and it still took over 20 mins for the only server in the restaurant to offer to take our appetizer. Our whole party didn't arrive at the same time so I'm not sure if she was waiting for all of us but she didn't offer to get us drinks or water. She didn't come back until after the appetizers were brought over and as she was leaving I had to ask can we order drinks?? No water glasses were ever asked to be brought over before hand and we were so thirsty. She didn't offer to have anything refilled and for the rest of dinner half our party sat with nothing in our cups. I asked if she had water and she said they have no water unless it's bottled but by them we were paying the bill. Server wasn't friendly she seemed annoyed to be there. Which annoys me since they charged an 18% gratuity that she didn't deserve in the slightest. Appetizers were good but how do you mess up hummus and eggplant?? Our main courses were awful, out of the 8 plates only 3 people were slightly pleased. The Kofta was supposed to be beef but definitely didn't have the right texture or taste and it also tasted microwaved or if it was frozen and then reheated. The salmon had a gross fishy taste and their Moroccan spice appeared to be a red salsa out of a jar. I've never had salmon at a restaurant that felt was cooked horribly but alas I think this place did. Awful since I love salmon and couldn't even consume it. The chicken also had a rubbery texture that seemed like precooked chicken that was reheated. The reason I knew how the other items tasted because I could not stomach my salmon and my friends offered to share even though they weren't pleased either. We were so unhappy with the whole experience that we just wanted the check by that point. It was a weekday and by the end of our evening there was only two other tables occupied so there is no reason for the awful service. I've had better Mediterranean food elsewhere. Would never come here again or recommend this place to anyone. Since it was a weekday I couldn't even be entertained by these so called belly dancer that they offer as a charge. It was also so dead that the service that we received was uncalled for. Decent food, great experience especially if it's belly dancer night (Friday or Saturday). It's a set 6-course menu for either $29 or $36 based on options and includes an 18% tip, so don't expect great service. The belly dancing went on for about 6 songs, including ones where women (and a few men) are pulled out of the crowd. It's not that sexy but I wouldn't take my grandmother there. Be aware that the music keeps going afterwards and people may/will start to dance, so based on the crowd it may be good for bad. A recent Friday night had two groups of "woo girls" who screamed and yelped at everything, which got old really quick; BYOB has its advantages and disadvantages :) That being said, it's a great experience with pretty good food, make sure you go there with people you are comfortable spending 2+ hours with and bring sufficient booze (there's a Bottle King a mile before it on Rt 46 if needed) read more

Our waitress Warda gave such GREAT customer service, she even took a group photo of us. The owner came out and spoke to us and they even gave me a necklace as a gift. I love it. Drove up from Jackson to this place to celebrate my friend's birthday. She is a belly dancer, and one of her other friends was our entertainment for the night. It is not a large restaurant, but the staff is professional and knows how to handle this. It is sort of "communal seating" so expect that if you are in a large party and don't know everyone, you will be sharing food with your bare hands at times with these people, so loosen up and roll with it, because it's an experience! The food was really fantastic and the staff is helpful in telling you what they think you might enjoy most, or what is the most popular. Belly dancer came out around 9pm. Please, educate yourself on how to treat these dancers. They are not strippers, and they are professionals, so don't treat them like a piece of meat. This is a beautiful culture that they are sharing with you over authentic food in an incredible atmosphere. Enjoy it, but please don't be rude. Lastly, it was BYOB, which I loved. Atmosphere: second time here and it was better then my first time! place is decorated as if your eating on Morocco. The seating are couches. It's very nice to have a conversation and dinner with friends. Great place for groups Service: the staff was so very helpful. The service was not only great, but it was fast. I took my wife to this long sought after place for dinner on a Saturday night with a high expectation of their signature Tagine plates. We ordered the four course Moroccan 'Diafa' which comes with green salad with Mediterranean dip platter (tasty!), family style main course, orange blossom Bastilla fruit and authentic Moroccan tea. For the main course, I ordered the baby lamb Tagine and my wife ordered the Tunisian chicken Tagine. The lamb was well cooked and extremely tender it literally fell off the bones. The added spices, lemon and baby beans gave it an extra zesty flavor. I've been to this place several times now and want to love it but it came up short in two critical areas the three times I visited. Let's start with the good. Although the restaurant is located in a somewhat shabby strip mall the ambiance once you enter the door is perfect. I've been to Morocco and it is truly authentic. From the tea pot collection by the front door to the group seating and the beautiful lamps. You can find yourself transported across the Atlantic to Morocco not that dissimilar to that of a good French bistro zapping you to Paris. That's unfortunately where the good ends. I have ordered an array of appetizers on each visit and usually a tagine of some sort. The appetizers are just ok, nothing you can't get better at a local falafel joint. It is the tagines, however, that have failed to impress on all my visits. This latest time I had the chicken with lemon. Some background, recently in Morocco I ate tagine every day for two weeks at different restaurants of varying price points from $ to $$$$. There the tagine was consistently an 8-10 out of 10. Even at the truck stops I had great tagine ( not unlike the espresso at Italian truck stops). So for reference I'd give the three tagines I've had at Marakesh 3-4 out of 10. Bland sauce, overcooked chicken, and french fries put on top, which I never encountered in Morocco. The other disappointment is the service. The waitress was borderline rude when sharing a meal with a child whilst they don't offer a childern's menu. The service was slow and the place was almost empty on the Tuesday I was recently there. It took a long time to flag down someone to refill the water. I was not surprised to see other reviewers report the same about the service after I went back and checked after my last experience. I really want to love this place because the Moroccan culture is so amazing. The decor, the food and the people in the real Morocco are tops in the world. The food is good, the service is usually very good, and the decor excellent. Thing to know: Weekends are the best day to go... The belly dancer makes the rounds and making conversation with your dining neighbors seems easier on more festive nights. Good for groups~! FOOD: The soup is to die for. (chick peas with a spiced tomato broth). it may have been the best part. We ordered the Sultan's table (prix fixe) with everything - best bet: Appetizer, Soup Salad and a choice of 1 entree Moroccan Cigars:(Appetizer) Fried crisp, flaky dough cigars with a delicate, juicy beef, egg and cinnamon filling - and powdered sugar on top it was an interesting mix of sweet and salty. it almost tasted like a beef version of the Monte Cristo Hummus - The hummus here is SO good. I usually have always gone to Trader Joe's for their hummus because no other's will do (often because the Tahini in it is not very good), but this Hummus was perfectly balanced. It was also served with some gerkins, pearl onions and olives and a some tomato-eggplant mix - VERY good Couscous - complete with raisins and lots of veggies - it was very fluffy and DEF redefined my view on what Cous Cous should be. Fool Tagine (not from the Sultan's menu) An Egyptian classic dish, this steaming stew of fava beans with tomato, lemon and garlic - it was so good, we had a to keep on asking for more bread to scoop up all the goodness. Lemon Chicken Tagine Marinated in our special blend of herbs and spices, served with saffron rice, preserved lemon and green olives. This is my favorite dish on the menu .. it was just amazing. (drown your cous cous in it) Skin on, Bone-in .. white & dark Kebab erved with mixed vegetables on a bed of saffron rice. Breast of Chicken or Prime Sirloin So good. The kebab and some pieces of chicken overcooked, but not too much where you were gnawing on sawdust. The spices were delicate and balanced and the saffron rice was really made with saffron (not turmeric) Orange Blossom Sweet Besteeya Layers of crisp, flaky pastry topped with our sweet orange blossom cream and ground nuts. this dessert almost looked a bit scary because of the mint-green colored sauce all over the top, but it was delicious in a very simple way. a nice touch to the end of the meal Be sure to order the MINT tea (sweet and refreshing) - Also, watching them pour the tea is entertainment in it of itself. =) The ATMOSPHERE: The decor sets the tone for this restaurant. The instant you walk in, you feel as though you been transported into the lush home of a Moroccan nobleman. The rich crimson fabrics on the pillows and cushions with gold accents just completes the experience. The Service: I have gone twice on during the week and once during the weekend. The weekends are definintely the best becauase the service is kicked up a notch. When you sit down on the lush couches, you will have a large silver "sink" placed under your hands as rose water is poured over for washing - nice touch because you WILL use your hands The service can be really on and off during your meal. Fun platters of tasty food brought out to share, while you sit on cushioned benches in a fairly open-air large room. There's nothing especially exotic about the food, but it's fun to eat there. Came here on a random Wednesday night a few weeks ago. I've been to Marakesh and wanted to see if this was close to the food I experienced there. I will admit, it was completely dead. However, I wanted to find out if this was authentic Morrocan food, and had good company so we didn't mind (BYOB didn't hurt either). Also, the décor was beautiful - and the seating is lounge like, very authentic with cushions and couches set around small, silver dish like tables. I can only imagine how awesome it is when it's a full house! We had the eggplant appetizer - it was perfection. The warm, fresh pita served with it was also amazing. They served us each a good, simple salad before the entrée as well. I had the lamb tagine and he had the mixed grill. The lamb was visibly falling off the bone! The mixed grill was tasty, but could have used some more spices, seasoned rice, or veggies. While the meat was cooked well, the rice was quite plain. This would have been no problem if the meat or veggies had been a little more seasoned. However, everything was cooked just right - not too dry or rare. At the end of our meal, our server brought us a big slice of chocolate mousse on the house, which we assume was to make up for the lack of atmosphere (which wasn't their fault, given the location and day of the week). This was definitely going above and beyond, since the service was perfect (she always came around to fill our water etc, but didn't linger near us all night, even in an empty restaurant) and the food was very tasty. I came here for a business dinner and loved it! BYOB FYI - our group brought a couple bottles of wine and some beer. You will be surprised by the outside - a below average strip mall lacking in much style or personality. But inside sections of tables and comfy couches with beautiful pillows, complimented by wall after wall of tapestries and artwork. You feel like you are in another world. You begin with the salad bar - hummus, olives, eggplant, and various salads, then we got about 5 or 6 courses of food brought to the table. Roasted veggies, shrimp on skewers, lamb, beef, cous cous, etc. I didn't eat the meat and left 100% satisfied. Excellent for vegetarians. You can tell the owner(s) have a tremendous amount of pride and passion - and it comes through in the food. Also for large parties the seating is odd, but very effective. Normally you get stuck into a large table where you can only talk to the 4-6 people nearest to you. With this arrangement - everyone got to talk. read more

Service was not good--like verging on awkward... BUT the food was absolutely awesome! I have been there twice and it was empty both times. But, like I said the food is really worth it. Also the ambiance and set-up is very impressive. It is literally like stepping into another world. The seats are all in the lounge style with cushions and pillows. The tables are low and round. It is the perfect place to enjoy with a group of people. I don't mind the awkward service, the food is just awesome! read more

It was a 5 star night and a enjoyable experience. The belly dancer is so fun to watch why you eat, and she gets everyone involved if you're up for dancing after your meal. The salad bar is delicious, specifically the dressing. We will be back with a larger group for my birthday! read more
