As a Montclair native, I am often skeptical of new restaurants and boutiques that have popped up to replace old classics, but I must admit that I was exceptionally impressed by the menu offerings at Marcel Bakery & Kitchen. I went today for a business lunch and ordered the Vegan Dream sandwich. The softness of the pita bread is what first caught my attention about the dish. It was warm and so fluffy, having that airy quality that only fresh baked bread can possess. Best pita I've ever had. It was stuffed with grilled portobello and tofu in pesto sauce which were juicy but not soggy. To top it all off I added the in house made hot sauce (requested it from the counter) which was absolutely dynamite. It was a thick paste with a gorgeous orange brick color and strong taste of red pepper. I would buy it by the bottle if given the chance. The culmination of the experience was meeting the head chef, who was behind the counter. I told him I loved the bread and that I was hard to impress because I worked as a baker to put myself through college. He immediately offered me samples of some of the delectable pastries in the front display. I had a little piece of the rose water cake, the chocolate hazelnut filled cake and the brioche. Holy flakey, tender, supple, buttery Jesus these treats were delightful. I could not possibly do them justice in a single post but long story short, Marcel Bakery and Kitchen gets my local stamp of approval. I absolutely adored Marcel Bakery & Kitchen. I went for lunch time and it was packed and there was a line. That being said I still got to the front of the line within 5 minutes and the cashier was so hopeful in helping me figure out what I should get. I got the mamas chicken ...so freaken good!!! It was so tasty, the chicken was so juicy, and the sauce they used was perfect and not excessively used. My coworker got the pesto pizza....just as amazing. I will be back once a week. Not only do they have amazing dishes they sell pastries and bread that are made fresh. It has a such a cute ambiance and I suggest stopping here and trying everything as I plan too! read more

I LOVE coming to Marcel every time I come to the Montclair area. It's perfect for a snack before class or even for lunch. They're a little pricey but the quality is definitely there and so worth the prices. They accommodate big groups (have long tables) and even bar seats facing out the window. I have to say I wasn't too impressed with today's experience at Marcel. I haven't been here since the remodel; therefore, I was looking forward to getting my food from there. But, it was a mess. I thought I got lucky when I came in and there was one slice of mushroom and spinach pizza slice left; however, the employee ended up dropping it then giggling. I told him to give me the plain cheese because I was starving. Not sure, if there is a price difference because last time I checked there was between the veggie and non-veggie pizza. Then, I pointed to the Halva when ordering my pastry, but was charged and given the Nutella cake. Thankfully, I noticed because I'm allergic to hazelnuts and so he replaced it with the item I actually ordered. Basically stated he's giving me "extra" due to the mishap, but I paid for it since the one I wanted was $2.50 not close to $5 like the one I was charged for. Simply delicious and so pleasant to visit, however, I do agree with the review that says that employees at the register and serving orders are distracted. Every time Millennials are hired, the same thing happens: they are always distracted, lazy, and care very little about offering good customer service. Disappointing! I admit my expectations were high given the excellence one expects when going to an Israeli type place. Yes be fair we only ordered a few things and not main dishes in the most part. Decor is awesome and service is seemingly well provided. I super appreciate the recyclable straws and isenof real dishes rather than plastic. However, mudroom barley soup had canned mushrooms. Shakshuka made with sauce from a can. Pesto Burrana way too salty and oily and cheese freshness was questionable. The bread that goes with the soup was baguette that sat in that bowl since the morning was dry and hard. Just the little things....medium at best. Such a cute brunch/lunch place! It is on the smaller side so seating can be tight but we got lucky and snagged a table in the corner. I ordered the mushroom and harissa shakshuka which came with toasted bread. It was a pretty big portion-I was stuffed after eating it. Flavors were definitely all there with the freshness of the tomatoes and all the spices and herbs. I did wish there was more harissa in it though. My friend got the chicken schnitzel and loved it. This is my favorite brunch place in Montclair! The food is always yummy & fresh. I always get their shashuka which is amazing. They have one that's spicy and one that's not spicy by the way. The only reason why I took off a star was bc I guess they changed their software system recently and had the points system for clients all deleted. I had accumulated a lot of points in the year and never used it. Then the day I went, they told me all my points werre deleted bc of a new system they're using. I absolutely adored Mishmish and was there a few times a week, got to know and miss the lovely staff. I was at Marcel yesterday because I was told they have items from the Mishmish menu. I was shocked by the price of $8 for a plain and average size order of French fries (a restaurant in the area charges $4.50; another $2.50 for deluxe, around $9 for a loaded table size - I know Mishmish used to cut their own potatoes but that changed a few years ago, as per former staff). I ordered the steak pita which came with my favorite salad with house dressing, great harissa mayonnaise and greens and tomato slices, and the man at the counter graciously brought over house hot sauce upon request. I purchased a healthy mess salad that didn't have the usual avocado, which is disappointing; I would usually order without ricotta salata but was told the salad couldn't be made because the person who makes them wasn't there (?). One thing I find odd about the location is no restroom despite indoor and outdoor seating. I really miss the way things were and realize recent events have impacted the way things are done; I hope one day soon maybe another location like Mishmish will open again. read more

I have been coming to Marcel's for a few months now and it's been constantly getting better and better each time. The bread they use is phenomenal as well as the coffee. The actual place is super cozy, modern feel and clean. I highly recommend the egg, cheese and turkey bacon sandwich, breaded chicken sandwich, meatball sandwich and their pesto pizza. At this point it seems like you can't go wrong ordering anything here without them knocking it out the park. Overall I love this place. The only downside is that it does get really busy during brunch hours in the weekends so plan accordingly. read more

I am a big fan of their sister location Mishmish and had no idea they were owned by the same people until after I had breakfast here. The shakshuka was excellent and so filling for $12. I also loved the freshly made bread that came with it that I bought a loaf to-go. Ambiance is laid back with a few small tables sprinkled in with large communal tables. Worse place ever to order take out. Service is bad and they don't take orders very well. They got my order wrong the first time and had to go back to get the correct one. When I got my second order it was like a 5 year old made my breakfast sandwich. HORRIBLE!!! The only saving grace was that the croissant and turkey bacon was on point.
