This is my absolute favorite stop in my town. Whether I'm looking for a quick coffee and some comforting yet interesting baked good, brunch where you can find Cheff Meny's legendary Shakshukas, or something more substantial to eat like Meny's meticulously constructed pittas/plates with mama's stew, Sabich, Shawarma Tacos (!!) and so much more. Every item in the menu deserves a mention. The communal sitting option makes this place an inviting spot, but you can always choose to sit at a your own table. The spicy harissa shakshuka and the falafel are fire. If you want the falafel a little spicier you can get the spicy harissa on the side which pairs well. I'm a big fan of the house iced teas. I went into marcel to get an iced latte which turned out to be a whole cup of cream with expresso. I expressed that this was not good and was compensated with a new drink and given two free bakery items. Not only is the customer service exquisite but the food is just as good. Tried Marcel Bakery & Kitchen for breakfast today. It was my first experience and I won't be going back. Format: Self seating with ordering at counter. Small size venue could max. seat 25-30 people. Took 8 minutes waiting to place an order for eggs & pancakes due to dithering of one party ahead of me and indecision by order takers. Coffee served in a large cup with unusable handle (too small), looked nice but coffee cup handle not functional for size of cup. Both my coffee and my wife's coffee were bitter and burned tasting. Two different types of coffee. Food service slow, Served 18 minutes after placing an order of sunny side up eggs & pancakes. Several customers served before us who had arrived and ordered after us. Had to ask for and told to "go search" for pepper from another table. My wife had to go search for syrup. Quality of food fine. Pricey for what it was $25- for one order of pancakes & one order of eggs with coffee. I don't see a reason to give Marcel's a 2nd chance. It wasn't the a horrible experience, just not a good experience. read more

Been more than once, and was so delighted that I had to write a review. It's all fresh, authentic and super yummy. When I recently took a sandwich to got, I assumed it came with the same salad offered when you dine in. While I was bummed to find out when I arrived home that I was wrong, they happily gave me the salad when I returned. IMHO, that's just super service. We have lived in Montclair for 12 years and have heard nothing but rave reviews about Marcel since its opening. Sadly, our inaugural visit was a huge letdown. The staff was both unfriendly and unhelpful. We were admittedly ignorant of Marcel culture and etiquette and could have used a little help. Instead, we were made to feel like nuisances who were in the way of an imminent arrival of some entity or event that greatly superseded our presence. So we just left I've no doubt Marcel's food is stellar, but it defies common sense to revisit any place you've felt unwelcome. And let's face it, Montclair has plenty of welcoming options. read more

I left NYC a decade ago, and am so pleased to report that I finally finally found a brunch spot that could vie with those in 212. We ordered a whole lot; pancakes, challah french toast, Yemenite Vine breakfast, the Healthy bomb, thick-cut pizza squares, vegan dream, the Mediterranean salad and the shepherd's salad. Everything, and I mean everything, was divine. It was obvious that all of the deliciousness was crafted with authenticity and attention to detail, because the flavors and textures were spot on. I loved the big pitched of iced lemon water and the carafes of water on the community tables, and the ladies cashiering were helpful and friendly. We left so excited to find our new favorite brunch spot. Thank you, Marcel, for saving us the headache and tolls of Sunday brunch in the city. Imagine the opening of Pandora's Box; the cloud of evil flowing out, filling the air and covering the land. Now, instead of evil, imagine the box was filled with deliciousness and the joy of eating great food, and you'll have some idea what effect the opening of Marcel had on Upper Montclair. An offshoot of Mishmish, arguably Montclair's best restaurant, this is a bright, airy space that manages to be several things simultaneously- a great coffee/pastry takeout counter a block from the train station (as a bakery, it values quality over variety- at any given time there are maybe 10 things available, and each one is the best imaginable rendition. The chocolate/halvah pastries and the almond tea cakes are insane and the chocolate rugelach are dense and chewy and flaky and I need to stop thinking about them now so close parentheses) with a case of takeout wraps and salads if you want to pack a lunch to take with you, while ALSO providing some scattered seating for dining in on the crazy-good menu of breakfasts and sandwiches (the sandwich menu kicks in at 10:30am). Breakfasts are exotic and interesting and delicious. The sandwiches are... I know I'm rapidly losing credibility with all the superlatives, but I swear to you, the chicken schnitzel sandwich in fresh-baked pita is one of the 3 best sandwiches I've had in my entire life, and of the other two, one was in Philadelphia and one was in Israel, so good luck finding better sandwiches in Montclair. Curried chicken salad with caramelized onions will light up every corner of your mouth. Thanks to the the falafel sandwich, I no longer have to drive to Paterson to get the best falafel in the area- this one is better. Paterson also has some excellent Middle Eastern bakeries that make bourekas, flaky pastries stuffed with spinach and/or cheese. Marcel's, again, are better. I haven't yet tried the soups but they look/smell fantastic, as do the pizzas and flatbreads. Oh yeah, I did try a tartine for breakfast, a thick slice of fresh baked bread topped with super-savory mushrooms, ricotta and poached eggs. Yikes. I wished for a steak knife to help with the crusty bread, but an otherwise flawless dish. One final word about culture and service: the owner is a super-nice guy, and he has clearly established a culture (at both of his establishments) of super-niceness. Some of the staff are seasoned veterans brought over from Mishmish, and your morning transaction with them could easily turn out to be the high point of your day. The place is still new, though, and there is sometimes a trainee with a little bit of a deer-in-headlights thing going on, but only a monster could hold that against them. Reply: " (Huff)...well, usually you bring it up...(huff)" taking my cup which I did not ask her to do. The hipster millenial gentrified attitude can get old fast in Montclair.
