We order takeout from here all the time and the food is never an issue. Last night, I went to the bar to have a couple coronas and bring food home for my wife. The bar was very busy and the bartender was doing her best to keep up with orders. When the food I ordered came out, it was plated and not packed to go. No big deal. I told the food runner about the mixup and he said no problem, I'll bag that up for you. Two minutes later, the food runner comes out of the kitchen empty handed, sits at the bar, orders a drink and starts vaping at the bar! First time Margaritas for us and let me say that as a Texas native my bar was not high for a New England take on Mexican food. Service was excellent from the bartender to the waitress that served us tonight. Chips were a tasty and complimentary. Salsa was a tad too sweet and not enough heat but likely appealing to most. I had the coconut shrimp salad which was excellent and I also loved their take on a skinny margarita. Hubs was not a fan of his enchiladas but he did like the table guac. Went last night, asked the hostess if seating in the bar was seat yourself, she said "I think so" sat for 15 minutes at two different tables and finally went to the server and asked....she hadn't seen us come in. It took 2 hours for two of us to have a meal. It was not that busy. The drink service was fine, and appetizers were maybe a little slow, but they seemed to have forgotten our entrees. It happens, but the worst part was the server making excuses for the kitchen and saying lame things like it was the appetizer that slowed the entrees. Sure, I get it, but no, this was just wrong. In any case, the staff kept looking at us, but only the server ever came over, and she mostly made excuses. Finally, when we were done, I asked to speak to the manager. I recognized her as one of the people who had looked over at us; I told her she must have known, I has seen her looking over and over, and she should have had the courage to come over and apologize, instead of making me ask. I ended up asking them to just bring me a box and brought my whole entree home, after sitting for over an hour with the appetizer. Sometimes you just have to have saucy, cheesy Mexican food and Margaritas never disappoints. They have a menu that will make most people happy, including your kids, and they have a nice selection of fun cocktails and menu items, from delicious appetizers like an agave shrimp special and a good variety of food options ( even if you don't want saucy and cheesy). The ambience inside is comfortable and colorful, and they have an outdoor patio (where we sat) which could use more decorations or plants or something, it felt slightly stark. We were delighted to have the option to eat outside, though, and the server was very attentive even though it was probably a hassle having both inside and outside tables to service. I had the special, a cheesy stuffed poblamo pepper with shrimp added. It was exactly what I was wanting and it was quite delicious. My husband had the fish tacos which he also enjoyed. We had chips and quacamole as an app and we give their guacamole an A, but it's definitely enough for 3-4 people with chips and sauce. It's a fun and low stress meal for the whole family. read more

I ordered the Chicken Chimichanga from this restaurant and while eating it I bit down into a bone. The bone damaged my molar and Margaritas has been terrible ever since. I worked in the restaurant industry for most of my life and things like this do happen and, in all cases, we covered the cost of damages to customers. This restaurant refused to take responsibility and passed me off to their insurance company. The insurance company QBE did a self-evaluation and determined they are not at fault. BE AWARE they do not take responsibility for the safety of their food and their customers. I have now filed a complaint with the state. EAT HERE AT YOUR OWN RISK! They will not reimburse you for their negligence! read more

Food here is OK. I would say average, for Mexican around here. Customer service was terrible. (server was fine, if a little out of the loop) I ordered the meal featured in the attached photo: which, as written, I assumed meant that I was getting three enchiladas with cheese, chicken and steak. That was problem #1, as I got one cheese, one chicken and one steak. I would never waste my money on a plain cheese enchilada, so that was minorly annoying. Problem #2, however, pissed me right the hell off. I had asked the server about which type of steak came on the meal, and was told they had two types...which would I prefer? I gave my preference. The bill came, and I was charged $3 for a "steak upgrade", which has several inherent problems: * I was not told there was a price difference: and the description of each didn't lend itself to an obvious quality "winner", which.... * Leads one to wonder if either choice would have been charged the "upgrade" fee * There was only steak in one of the three "4-bite" enchiladas.... * And not very much, at that * How low-end crappy is their other steak that four bites worth of an upgrade costs 3 bucks?! And how much worse must their ground beef be? * I was now paying $18.50 for a meal I felt was worth $14 tops (and that only because of the free chips on each table) When I questioned the bill, the server went back to ask if it was in error, since, again, nonsensical and outrageous. They were told, as relayed back to us, "that's the way it is". Leaving me never to return, and crap-talking them every opportunity I get. Great business-sense, manager. Make three bucks at the expense of many future dinner parties. Going there was already a compromise of convenience, with Loco Coco's down the road. This was my first time here in years, since the "cooked pile of lettuce with my fajita" incident. I should have learned from that. *Interestingly, after posting this, I got the follow up message you see below (I believe within a day). "Well, at least they are on top of reputation control", I thought. I replied immediately. Almost a week later, no correspondence of any sort. So, I'll just assume the public concern was simply virtue signaling, and not an attempt at customer service. ** And, 10 days later, I got a reply. Apologized and said they'd do better next time. Not nit picking here, but there was a lot of blame directed at the server, and no mention of the poorly written menu description. No real issues for the general public from my perspective accept for one specific to me that is not the restaurants fault. They somewhat recently seem to have added something in the oil or something that they use to fry things with that I seem to be allergic too so now I do not go very often. Came here with a small work group and thought it was excellent. We used to be regulars at the Margaritas in Nashua NH many years ago. When in the Exeter area I noticed the familiar name and immediately craved Mexican. During Covid I always call to see if reservations are required - wasn't required but recommend if we wanted to eat out on the patio. Arrived and promptly seated. Wait staff was very friendly. Chips and salsa were a great start to the meal. I ordered the enchiladas muchasas- which was my favorite before. It wasn't this time. Not sure what changed over the years but the spice level didn't please me as much as it used to. Food change- my palate changed? Who knows. Bubbly margarita was good but wasn't my favorite. I have been coming to this location for the last five years and find the food is ok and the help is usually very helpful. I watch the managers stand around and occasionally delivering food to tables. If top management would tell their managers to talk to the customers and ask how they are enjoying their visit it would help grow the business. People like to feel they are appreciated. read more

I've been going to Margaritas in Exeter about once a week for a few months now (usually on Wednesdays). When we arrived last week, there was about a 30 minute wait (did not take 30 minutes). I asked Tim (a waiter there) if we could get some chips and salsa while we waited in the lobby. I don't think my butt hit the chairs in the lobby before he zipped over with chips and salsa. We visited this location this evening, for the second time in the last couple of months. The main deciding factor was that I was so impressed with the service the first time, that I had no fear of poor service here at all. (Restaurants, sadly, can have nice food, but indifferent or horrible service, and service is most often the most memorable part of a visit.) Anyway, upon being seated, we were greeted by the same wonderful server as before! What a great way to start the evening. Natasha (our wonderful server) was on top of her game as usual. Lovely and friendly, polite and pleasant, quick to take the order, and really good at doing something she clearly enjoys. Four stars for the drinks, two or maybe three for the food. In the last few months I've been to Dallas, San Antonio, and San Diego so maybe I'm just being too picky about Mexican food, but Margarita's is just a corporate chain restaurant with a Mexican theme. They could put new stuff on the walls, change the menus, and give the servers new costumes and it would be an Olive Garden or a Rainforest Cafe. The food is tasty and unless you're allergic to something, it isn't likely to make you sick. It's a fun place for a bunch of people to go as a change. But Mexican? Maybe in the same way that Taco Bell is Mexican. The drinks are predictable but they're big and not watered down. The only catch with the drinks is that this place isn't within walking distance of anything except maybe Exeter Hospital, so don't enjoy the drinks too much if you plan to drive home. The bottom line: It's a fun place to go with friends. The drinks are better than the food, but the food is okay if you're not looking for anything more authentic than a ground beef chimichanga. I'm sure I'll go there again, but I'm sure it will be because someone else suggested it. read more

Wife and I came in after work for a couple margaritas and dinner. We sat at the bar and I ordered my margarita while the wife decided what she was going to have. The bartender asked for both of our ID's which we provided happily. The bartender took our ID's into the back because we are from out of state and she was unfamiliar with our State's ID's. After waiting for about 10 minutes she returns and says she doesn't feel "comfortable" serving us because our ID's don't match the reference book she was using that looked like it's been sitting on a shelf gathering dust for 10 years. She did not give any actual evidence or specific reason as to why she believed our ID's to be fraudulent. She also stated she was going to have to keep our ID's. We told her that she was absolutely not going to keep our ID's. Just because she is uneducated doesn't mean she can steal our state issued ID's. After looking over to her manager for help (who did not acknowledge us the entire time, he simply gave us nasty side-eye and told her that it is her decision whether or not to keep our licenses) she begrudgingly gave our ID's back and told us that again she was not comfortable serving us. We had been nothing but kind and respectful, even after waiting and being refused service. It's obvious she knew our ID's were real otherwise she would not have given them back. It's a good thing she did, because we would have had to call the police to tell your staff that they are inept. We proceeded to go to Las Olas where the staff are a little smarter and we both enjoyed margaritas there. read more

Been here a trillion times. Each time it's always average. I compare it to a legitimate Mexican restaurants in the area. But this last visit really seems to be a downgrade. I ordered a fajita salad with chicken. The cook sliced HUGE pieces of peppers and onions. They made ZERO attempt to sauté them. Simply just raw. The server returned with another dishes them after displaying my displeasure (she also agreed). This time they were cut smaller and half cooked. Kitchen management needs help. When the waitress finally came over she just plopped the chips and salsa down and just looked at us and said "what do you want to drink?". Wanted to try this place for awhile. However, I was really disappointed in all aspects of going here last night. We ordered a jalapeño marg and a regular classic marg. The jalapeño was ok but the classic was so sweet it tasted like juice. We ordered the guacamole and it was flavorless. No salt or lime juice added. It's like they just mashed up an avocado and did nothing to it. We ordered the chicken Chimichanga and a beef burrito. Both were terrible. The chimichanga was 1/3 the size as the burrito, cold, and just bland. The burrito was good size but game in a to go wrapping and was also bland. Overall just a bad experience going here read more

Very Slow Service for Lunch. Lunch Service is supposed to be quick, so people can get back to work. The chips are oversalted. Tortillas are served raw wrapped in foil - if you request to have them grilled, they won't do it This isn't Tex Mex or Authentic Mex. I think they are only open for the bar. read more

I have to say I read the reviews and understand that this is a chain Mexican restaurant. I'm Mexican and I am accustomed to my mom's cooking and this was not that. BUT it was EXTREMELY good! My husband, grandson and I enjoyed some fantastic takeout! We sat at the bar for a beer while we waited (my husband and I, not my grandson). The only complaint: we didn't get our churros. I called to say that we would pick them up later, and the manager, Brad said "we will do you one better...we will bring them to you." The manager hand delivered to our hotel the missing churros. The food was great! Everything was cooked to perfection! The service was outstanding -- if I could, I'd give it 10 stars instead of five.
