Lalo's is the default famiy restaurant in our neighborhood. It is very child friendly, so if you want to escape the rugrats there, go after 9:00 p.m. The kids menu comes with crayons, all meals come with this interesting chicken soup (it contains potatoes, which is unusual but good) and a plate of pickled spicy carrots and other veggies. Between these and the good chips and salsa, we're usually full by the time the entrees come. But try to save room, because the dinners are quite good. You won't get Rick-Bayless-type "snooty" Mexican, just good, predictable food. read more

The food this resturant is really good. But it's more than the food. It has a dimmed lighting that gives it a romantic feel. And on the weekends they have a live band playing. The walls are decorated with pictures from different Mexican artists like Diego Rivera. When you add up all the elements, you get a great evening of food and ambience. read more

I have tried this place a few times. The first time i ordered from Margaritas i ordered the taco dinner. The meat was dry and flavorless, except for the pastor which was decent. I figured i would give it a second chance and i absolutely made the wrong decision. I got a few tamales and enchiladas, i do not know where they get their protein but i am not a fan. read more

this is one of the good lalo's. you'll know if you go to a bad one. always clean, great staff, solid, consistent good food. It gets a little cold in there during the summer.. they have that AC cranked but I'd rather bring a sweater & enjoy the soup than have sweaty servers passing out from running around all day. the only mex restaurant that serves americana-style chicken soup... pretty darn close to the way my slovak grandma used to make. strange. but cool. and the guacamole is supergood. Only once place I know of makes a better guac but they're over in wicker park.... and I can walk here :) All of this with a restaurant.com gift certificate I earned by drinking WAAAAY too much diet coke... a place is only as good as they way they treat the customers who come in with a discount. I have received bad service elsewhere when using a coupon, groupon or other discount... but not here. They're happy to have you. read more

My husband and I have been going to Margaritas since the early 90's. The service has always been excellent, but after over 20 years, it has only gotten better. The staff knows us well, they have seen our children grow up and even ask for them when we go alone (kids are 21 and 17 now). Not only are we treated like family when we go, but the food continues to be impeccable. The consistency after so many years is amazing and we always walk away truly satisfied. I always recommend this place to any friends who are in the area and we are even celebrating my daughter's 21st birthday there (as we have celebrated so many birthdays before). For hot plate mexican, this is the only place that satisfies. It is cheap and consistent. They have a lunch buffet that is so yummy. I am not a buffet kind of person, but this one is good. The food quality is the same as the menu items, plus they have chilaquiles. The mixed drinks are stiff. If you want something fancy or gourmet, then this isn't the place for you. read more

The two times I've been here have been for work lunches. The buffet is pretty expansive and pretty much everything I'd consider ordering. Went here for drinks and nachos! As usual the margaritas were amazing! Our service was excellent and a woman who I think is the owner even got our drink order because the server was busy! I only gave it 4 stars because they couldn't put meat on the nachos! Up charge me $4 and give me steak please! The burrito dinner is great though, so maybe I'll stick to that next time! After having difficulty actually using our Groupon (the restaurant was closed for cleaning for a week at the time of purchase-without warning), the food ended up being delicious. You are served with all-you-can-eat chips & (delicious) salsa as soon as you are seated. The food is very authentic and I would almost go as far to say almost healthy, as nothing was greasy. The drinks were a little overpriced; especially considering nothing seemed too fantastic. Wanted to try a margarita, but didn't want to pay $11 for it. Overall, would definitely eat here again if the chance presented itself. But not sure that I would make the half hour drive (just for Margaritas) again. read more

First time here on a recommendation from a friend. Delicious, delicious, delicious! Awesome lunch buffet. Loved the chicken con mole-perfect balance of sweet and hot. Pork with green sauce was fork tender and the condiment bar had a wonderful variety of extras to choose from, flan was a bit too gelatin like for my taste but still delish and the margarita tied it all together. So happy I found this gem, it's a bit of a distance for me but I'm willing to travel for this spot. Great job Margaritas! read more

My mother and I come here frequently whenever were in the mood for Mexican food and don't want to travel to far. I always order their chicken enchilada's suiza. Them come out pretty good. We never had a problem here. The mango margarita is good as well. All entrees come with a decent Chicken soup. read more

lalos is a solid spot..i have eaten at the one in berwyn, in cicero, in river north (which closed) and in lincoln park...but i think the best one might be the oak park location....i think the portions are the biggest here and the food is pretty good..there isnt much of the famous mariachi guys goin on here..but there is a lot of margaritas going around...the steak tacos are good..the chips and salsa are a 4 star for me here...they have some true mexican dishes here and they even serve the chicken soup...the chicken soup is clutch for me in rating mexican restaurants..i want that chicken soup.. im not into flavored margaritas but i hear that they are good here...try the skirt steak, the taco dinner, the enchiladas, or the huevos rancheros if you get there for breakfast. i will be tryin out some sort of seafood on friday..and i will update this review. read more

It was exactly what I was looking for. An option for Mexican food in my neighborhood that was good and a little less "upscale" than some of the other local options. Im writing this review while im in the waiting room at the ER, because my mother was just brought in via ambulance from severe food poisoning! My family and I took her to Margaritas along with my grandparents for some nice mexican food. What a mothers day experience we had! The food was okay not too bad not too good, our waitress was efficient and then the bathroom had to eventually come, so we went to the ladies room , the most disgusting place i have ever been, floor was so sticky my mom and I had to peel toilet papet off of our shoes for ten minutes. At the time it was funny but not anymore. Then the bill came. Wow. As much as my car payment! My review: lets not go here, unless we want food poisoining and a hole in our wallets. WOW, tacos de pescado are seriously out of this world with flavor. They give you a cup of soup to start with your meal and the warm chips and spicy salsa are delicious. The best habanero hot sauce I've ever had. Of course it's bottled, but when I asked if I could purchase it, my waitress gave me a fresh bottle to take home and put it in a bag for me. I've only eaten the fish tacos. It's good enough, doesn't taste authentic because it doesn't seem to be something that's made to order, more assembled to order. I don't care too much because the potato salad that comes on the side is amazing. And the rice is good. The portions are very generous. Put all of it in a tortilla, dump some habanero sauce on it, and it's a meal. I've had excellent service here and terrible. Then been back and that same terrible person was great. I had one margarita here and was too drunk to drive home after two sips. Really. In a recession, i do think that it's overpriced for the actual quality of the food. Adding a star in my update because lunch here last weekend was a ton of fun, and the food was tasty and served fast. We did a day of aggressive Frank Lloyd Wright touring, both Robie House in Hyde Park and the Home & Studio here in Oak Park, and a new Groupon made Lalo's especially attractive for a late lunch after a hard day's working being a turista. No alcohol on account of driving my Jeeposaurus, but the food was great and the $40 Groupon covered almost the whole check. Plus miraculously we got parking right across the street. I'm still not sure I would try Lalo's WITHOUT a discount of some kind, but WITH a discount it is well worth it. I had the same thing I had last time, Milanesa de Res, and it was great. The flan for dessert was especially delish, and if you are doing fun things in OP Lalo's seems like a great place for a late lunch or early dinner. read more

Came here on a weeknight for dinner with one other person and we loved it! We had a groupon deal which is how I discovered the restaurant in the first place and I'm really glad that we decided to try it! We were greeted and seated immediately and then a buser brought us water and chips and salsa! The night we went they had $4 dollar margaritas but we unfortunately had to pay full price for our margaritas because you cannot combine the groupon with that promotion. My boyfriend had some type of combination plate that included steak, chorizo, and shrimp wrapped in bacon and he LOVED it. BUGS IN MY FOOD!!!! My family ordered take out from this restaurant, and we were directed to sit at a table in the far back. It took 5 minutes for someone to come up to us and the waiter was not very welcoming which is unfortunate because we spent quite a bit of money on food (overpriced for the quality you will get). After a wait, we brought the food home and opened the take out box only to discover 4 substantially sized BUGS crawling all over our food. We immediately threw the food out for obvious reasons. Promptly, we called the restaurant. The man who answered the phone refused to direct us to the manager after we told him our problem, and he acted like bugs in our food was not a big issue and kept asking what the problem was. After many minutes of explaining our issue he directed us to an assistant manager. We pleaded with the assistant manager to get in touch with the manager but the only thing the assistant manager wanted to know was why we were complaining. The assistant manager then threatened to record the conversation, which we were okay with because we just wanted our money back. We then were told we would have to go all the way back, which is far for us, to prove to them that there were bugs in our food. We were outraged at this request!! They had served us bugs in our food and they were trying to make it sound like it was our fault. Therefore, we hung up and WILL NEVER GO BACK TO THIS RESTAURANT!!!!! read more

I kept hearing how wondewrful this place was & so tried it at lunchtime today. My waitress was cheerful, politely took my order, & then everything went downhill. I ordered chicken fajitas with a side salad. The wait staff dissapeared & my glass sat empty for a good 10 minutes. My meal was served nice & hot...no guacamole or sour cream or even salsa. Now I've eaten at numerous Mexican Restaurants & usually order either the fajitas or enchilladas & every time they serve it with a small portion of sour cream & guacamole. I asked for a small portion of both & she complied. So now I'm really ready for my lunch. The chicken looked more like chicken parts & it was overcooked & dry. Never did get my salad. Had to wait quite awhile to get my bill as well. I won't be going back there again. What a bummer. read more

Bought a group on and was really excited about it. When we got there we ordered margarita's. They came out with lemons on the rim -- the restaurant was out of limes -- a Mexican restaurant with no lime? (There's a grocery store down the street...) It was the worst margarita I've ever had (hint -- if your going to use a mix, have limes and add tequila.) Sent it back and got a beer. Guacamole (without lime) was frozen -- should have left at that point. Ordered vegetable fajitas. There were canned vegetables, along with zucchini (overcooked), onions, and maybe peppers and tomatoes. I was so amazed by the canned peas and carrots that the experience was over. There are so many other really good restaurants out there -- don't waste your time and money on this one. read more
