Just a few minutes from beautiful Southold, a short distance to many vineyards and just seven miles to Orient State Park. You will be treated to an excellent home cooked breakfast prepared with love by Veda. Each day Wilfred served us a big fresh fruit salad, OJ, salad with homemade dressing, followed by a yummy filling breakfast entre. The first day the entre was the best cheese omelet I ever had and sausage with home fries. The second day the entre was corned beef hash, biscuits, plantains, both days muffins, OJ and very fresh coffee. Veda is very accommodating to dietary concerns. When we were done eating Veda came out and we enjoyed wonderful conversations with both Wilfred and Vida. They are warm, interesting, knowledgeable helpful and welcoming hosts. Each morning, coffee was ready at 8 AM, and we enjoyed wonderful conversations over Veda's delicious homemade breakfasts. The 9 AM breakfast featured a fresh fruit bowl, a beautifully dressed salad, and a flavorful entrée. On our first morning, we had chorizo, cheese eggs with biscuits; on the second, chickpea fritters and salmon cakes. Everything was so delicious that I practically finished it in one bite! Beyond the exceptional quality of the food, what truly stood out was the engaging conversation. Wilfred is incredibly knowledgeable, engaging, and has the gift of gab. We loved hearing his stories and insights throughout our stay. The location is also favorable, a short distance from Greenport, and we had no trouble getting around without a car. We enjoyed meeting and chatting with the other guests and genuinely felt welcomed throughout our visit. A woman who fell squarely into the "surprised and afraid to find herself in charge of a hotel" category was incredibly rude to my wife when we were working from the room (as we had been told we could) the day we needed to inexplicably vacate it for a different room. "My husband is showering, we need 15 minutes." "You can't have 15 minutes." Like, what are you going to do? Forcibly remove us from the room? You guys were the ones who told us we could use the room. 4. I should also note that the rooms were LITERALLY RIGHT NEXT DOOR TO EACH OTHER and to my eye completely identical. (The one we moved to had a small balcony but otherwise I didn't detect any material difference.) It doesn't seem like an insurmountable puzzle to solve that you could have just put the other people into the vacant room. 5. They decided for some reason to empty the hotel's septic tank during our friends' wedding photos. 6. It's one of those places where a hopeless fussy person has laminated lots of signs with rules and instructions. Do NOT remove the laminated guide to the room from the room itself. Do NOT use any towel other than the blue ones for removing makeup. Do NOT flush anything other than toilet paper because the house has EXTREMELY sensitive plumbing. It all seems like someone very, very angry runs the place. (Is there a significant problem with guests removing the laminated guide from the room?) One star for a good location and another star for a pretty good breakfast (you are entitled to ONE cooked item, per the rules).

My husband and I stayed here on Easter long weekend, a getaway that we planned to escape the city. We arrived on Thursday evening and departed Sunday morning. We stayed in the Halsey Suite, which was absolutely incredible. The bed was extremely comfortable and the fireplace was just wonderful. My husband and I also decided that our next home has to have a similar bathroom because it was just awesome. The freestanding tub, shower, and amenities were incredible. We also loved the afternoon cookies baked by Liz and just staying at this wonderful inn. On Friday, since it was the only day with good weather, Liz gave us directions to the beach and helped us figure out where to eat for dinner. We drove around and explored the area. On Saturday, Liz gave us passes to the Parrish Art Museum, and we spent the rest of the time just relaxing in the room until dinner which was also nice because the weather was pretty terrible. The room had so many incredible amenities, and it was nice to just be able to get away and relax. It would be remiss of me to leave a review without mentioning the breakfasts made by Liz. 3 courses of absolute deliciousness - as you can see from my photos. They were also wonderful at recommending restaurants to eat at, and tell us what they thought if it was a place we already booked. I also purchased the cookies and cocoa option as a surprise for my husband, and Liz's homemade marshmallows and the homemade cookies we took home allowed us to keep enjoying the stay we had here. If we ever decide to come out to The Hamptons again, White Fences would be the first place we look to book. We had an absolutely incredible stay.

The view of Tiana bay, the waterfront deck, salt water pool, kayaks, and free breakfast every morning make for a great vacation in a beautiful spot. We decided our last stay was when we were put in a room overlooking the garbage dumpsters, and the noise and smell were very upsetting. We made the mistake of trying it one more time in the early 2000's. I must mention that we often, but not always, have a little "get away" in mid-October as its our wedding anniversary and my birthday month. Well, when I called to make the reservation, I was told that the place had been converted to condos, and each owner was responsible for the condition of the room. It's a very expensive place, so how bad could it be? The joke was on us. Everything, except the thrift shop 1960's style TV was broken. Even some of the light didn't work, the management wouldn't even consider replacing lightbulbs. We bought food for our room and couldn't cook it, even the microwave was broken. There was absolutely NO patio furniture. When I called the front desk, I was told it was up to the owner. It looked to me like the room next door had "borrowed" all the furniture as they had a huge set up on the patio, and the furniture looked like the patio furniture we were used to from past visits. We had to take kitchen chairs outside. I have never ever had an experience like this, and we are world travelers. I have stayed in third world countries with better amenities and more gracious service than this place. A few years ago, we returned to Montauk and stayed in a different beachfront hotel, same situation, condos owned by various investors, and had a beautiful room. Whenever we stay there, we always request the same room. It's beautifully decorated and exquisitely clean. Montauk manor is a disgrace.
