In terms of flavor, Mariachi's high-priced entrees are notoriously in the same league as microwaved Stouffer's. On this particular occasion, however, the quality of the food fell below even that low bar: the enchiladas were not heated thoroughly, so that the filling was unappetizingly lukewarm. The salsa tasted like it came from a jar. The servers were the most unfriendly and inattentive we've ever encountered in a restaurant on Kauai. Not once during the meal did a server come by our table to inquire how the food was, or to refill water glasses. Of the numerous food establishments in Kapaa that serve Mexican cuisine, Mariachi's is the bottom of the barrel -- appallingly bad service coupled with potentially unsafe food preparation practices. read more

Very disappointed. Out of our group of 7 people, only one of us enjoyed their food...he's 15. Being from Arizona, we have a LOT of Mexican food restaurants that offer authentic food...their food wasn't good. The beans looked and tasted like they were from a can. My margarita was watered down...and for $16, I'd like to taste the Don Julio (top shelf) tequila I requested. Two from our group were sick to their stomachs later. Our server was great, but I'm pissed that our bill was $177 for three people and the quality of food and drinks were worth $40...if that. They also automatically add gratuity to the bill and don't say a word about it. So, when I noticed it, I made sure to leave a comment in the tip section that they already added their tip...nothing additional from me. Great staff...but not the food. Waited 1 hour. For our food! They never apologized or let us know that it would take so long. The food tasted ok, and the portion size was average. The staff was rude about the long wait, and acted like it was no big deal. They completely ignored us. And we had to ask 4 times for chips. Stopped in for lunch this Wednesday afternoon. We were offered a table at the window which allowed us to savor the breeze and people watch. The margaritas were pretty light, but the beer was cold and they offer selections on tap or in the bottle. The food was fine...nothing to write home about. HOWEVER...our waitress was phenomenal!!! Stopped by on a Saturday evening. Sat next to a rowdy crowd that needed to be spoken to to quiet down. The "need to be happy" margarita was strong but watered down. Food came quickly and enjoyed by all - salad, quesadillas, burritos. Learned while eating that there was a PPV boxing matching on tv. We stayed to watch. Asked for drink menu before match started - menu arrived but waiter never came to ask for additional drink orders. The staff was too focused on boxing match and lost sight on sales as a result (not just us). This is the opportunity to make $$in drink sales. There was plenty of staff on when we visited on a Tuesday evening two bartenders, 3-4 servers and a busser. A the place was full but due to Covid that's 1/2 capacity but they were staffed to accommodate twice that. Yet we waited to be seated at the bar. One of the bar stools had , what I hoped was refried beans and salsa, smeared on the seat . After about 5 minutes I got the attention of one of the staff wandering aimlessly about the place. I asked to swap out the bar stool and he wiped the seat off with something that looked like a cross between a dirty diaper and a sponge. After another too long of a wait we finally were allowed to order drinks. Then another long wait before another staff drive by and we were able to order dinner. Dinner consisted of a chimichanga that somehow had a gooey pasty mess in the center that appeared to be overly oily saturated and undercooked flour tortilla??? Or possibly a substance similar to the bar rag used to clean my seat. My dinner was a chili relent which was passable if you scraped the in house aged red sauce. And by in house aged I mean waaaay past it's shelf life. The accompanying ground beef tostada was edible but left a suspicious greasy residue on your tongue. In conclusion, I fear the best part of this meal was wiped off my seat. As someone obviously had it leak out of their pants while attempting to steal it. Save your time and your health. My hubby got enticed by their false advertising of having the best mexican food, their happy hour and the veranda-like seating. There were only 3 things good about this place thus the 2 stars, otherwise I will give it 1-star: the waitress, the location and the salsa that came with the chips. The rest are just plain awful. They need to fire the male server who has a personality of a paperweight! Seriously, the guy won't acknowledge you, won't respond, nor will crack a smile, he is so rude and dry. They charge for chips and salsa refill and drink refill. The food is horrible! Their nacho supreme is a joke! They serve it with ground beef with a $3 upcharge for steak, which omg looks like diced beef jerky! For $17, it was a huge pile of mess. We got 3 fish tacos from the HH menu and they were tasteless. I also have traveled extensively throughout Mexico, plus El Salvador and Costa Rica. How doe you screw up Machaca? And the salsa; really? Worst Mexican food ever. I only had the menudo with corn tortillas and it was stellar. I live in San Jose, California and haven't had a good bowl of menudo in my own town so this was quite a treat. Big bowl with all the fixings. I really liked the tortillas served with it as well. There was enough to have some for breakfast the next morning. The restaurant is open and airy with some birds hopping around here and there but not bothersome like the dang roosters can be. Pleasantly surprised by how good this was! Came for breakfast and amongst the items we enjoyed were the loco moco and enfrijoladas(?). Absolutely. Delicious. Everything was freshly made, even the orange juice tasted like it was just squeezed. The enchiladas were made with Mexican cheese and a nice black bean sauce. A nice deviation from the standards. The papas were crispy with just the right amount of soft and the eggs were spot on! The service was exceptional as well. We have already picked out what we will be having for breakfast tomorrow! My nachos were sad and soggy, the guacamole was completely oxidized and tasted store bought (so did the salsa!) Good food, we were super full but we also ordered a bunch of food. Bad service from our female waitress (rosy) the only one, the rest of the crew was very helpful. We ordered a mixed fajita plate but only got beef and chicken, I guess she forgot the shrimp, we would of paid the extra charge for the shrimp but there is no faith in the Hispanics, even coming from another Hispanic. Overpriced nachos for what you get. Ceviche was delicious, but we had to take it to go because everything came at once. Homemade tortillas are Bomb, but we only got two and one flour. Had to wait for another order of tortillas, but I had to go a physically order them at the bar because our waitress was never back to see us. Decided to try here on a recommendation from a tour guide. My boyfriend got the super burrito (which is what the tour guide recommended) and I got a chicken enchilada and a happy hour taco with beef for $3. My boyfriend thought the burrito was filling and the flavor was good. Mine on the other had no flavor. It was like they had forgotten to add salt. The taco shell seemed freshly made but it was really oily. Service wasn't that great either. We were waiting for our check for a bit. read more

If your restaurant is posting open till 9 then why not seat us ??? we had driven in from Wainiha just to eat here! checked the website and figured we had plenty of time... had some traffic but 8:45 is not 9!!!! so if we had been there at 8:30 would there have been a group discussion about whether to seat us at 8:30? believe me we will be sharing how we were treated with anyone that will listen!
