A very welcome addition to Northfield. Mariano's is a substantial upgrade over Dominicks'. Its as good as Sunset at more reasonable prices. The produce section is great and features truly fresh orange juice at $3.50 per half gallon. The hot bar is also great. I am here at least once per week. read more

Unforgivably poor customer service. Let me start off by saying that I'm not a coupon user. Nevertheless, when I ran across an internet coupon for some vegan meat products, buy one-get one free, I felt compelled to print out a couple. I knew from my previous visit to the Marianos in Northfield that they stocked the product and specifically went there to shop. The cashier tallied everything up and then attempted to enter the coupons with nothing said concerning any coupon policies or otherwise. When she had difficulty doing so, she called a supervisor over to assist her. The supervisor looked at me as if I'd dropped a dead mouse on the conveyor. "We don't take internet coupons." I was astonished and incredulous both at the statement and at the way it was delivered. "Excuse me, you don't take any internet coupons?", I replied. "No, it has to be clipped from the newspaper in color." I imagine that the fact that I was clearly upset was more than evident led him to continue after a short pause, "I will accept these this time because she (the cashier) already entered them, but you cannot use any internet coupons." I thanked him, quite embarrassed, and got out of there. I went back to my office the next day and searched for Mariano's coupon policy, still red-faced as I felt like I had been public humiliated by the supervisor. Let me make it clear, the tone of his voice wasn't, "I'm sorry, we have a store policy that doesn't let us do this," but rather, "Look, moron, you should know you can't do this," with the line of people behind me merely wanting the drama to end. Here's what I found, "Roundy's accepts manufacturer coupons that have been obtained via the Internet and then printed. All Manufacturer Coupon guidelines apply to Printed Internet Coupons." For a moment, I was excited and vindicated. Next, however, I read, "Roundy's does NOT accept internet printed coupons containing the following conditions: FREE product offers or Buy One Get One Free offers." OK, so the coupons I'd presented were not permitted. My fault. Still, the supervisor was wrong or lying about the "no internet coupons" thing. And I didn't need to be made to feel ashamed in front of a bunch of other shoppers for trying to present a coupon for which no sign at the store, at least of which I am aware, indicates it's not acceptable. So, I wrote an email to customer service. I basically said what I've said here, in abbreviated form, stating that I felt slighted and mistreated by having a supervisor tell me that no internet coupons were acceptable when that wasn't true. The response I received back was essentially, "Yeah, so?" That's customer disservice. And I figured it was a fluke, so I decided to write Robert Mariano himself and ask how he felt about it. A month later, I've heard nothing. And that's a real shame. Because as I see it, I'm lucky. I've got Jewel-Osco, Whole Foods, Sunset Foods, Trader Joe's, and Garden Fresh Market all within three miles driving distance. And while they may not all carry identical items, some offer better deals than others and I'm simply not any worse-off for not wanting to shop at Marianos ever again. Yes, their fresh-squeezed orange juice is great. Sunset has way better egg salad. And Jewel has 4 times the frozen foods selection at significantly better prices, most days. Ultimately, it seems to me that the only real difference between these stores is customer service. And, Marianos just fell flat on that score. read more

I like the selection but deducted two stars for service. The last three times I have been stuck at a slow register where bagger and cashier were chatting with each other and seemed to forget they were working. That kind of thing never happens to me at whole foods or trader joes and is enough to make me avoid Mariano's when in a rush. read more

I have no problem stopping here for an item or two but I feel nothing for Mariano's. Underneath the live piano player (not my jam) and the calculated selection of organic foods, Mariano's is just another grocery store, albeit a few notches up the supermarket food chain from Dominick's, which (thank God) just disappeared. This Mariano's has a large food court where one option is to pick out a raw meat and have it cooked to order. I ordered a grilled chicken sandwich where the store employee picked up the chicken breast from the cooler with a gloved hand, placing it on the grill. The employee then went to the bakery and rummaged through a bin for a bun, using the same gloved hand that handled the raw chicken! I went directly to a store manager and recounted what occurred. The manager acted like I was bothering her. Hmmm... Giving the store another chance, avoiding the area which was grilling meats, I purchased soup and a cornbread. I took one bite with a fork of the cornbread and realizing that the bread had mold in a number of places. Inspecting the packaging, the bread's last sell date was a week prior. I went to a manager who gave me a refund but then threw my credit card receipt in the trash. When I asked him for the receipt he couldn't find it among all the other trash / receipts already in the trash. Eventually a new receipt was printed. All that said I want a hour back of my life wasted with these people. In short safe food handling practices in this store are questionable. read more

I go to Mariano's in northfield at least four times a week. I'm treated so well it's like a small neighborhood store that's not actually small. All the employees are delightful and very helpful. But a special shout out to Scott in the deli department. He's knowledgeable helpful and very charming. It's a delight to go shopping . read more

Rude staff and lies about products. Went to the meat department to get fresh grass fed ground beef. We were told the $4.99 special was grass fed but not listed anywhere. I said no thank you. If it doesn't say grass fed and no hormones then likely not the case. I was directed -rudely- to the case. Low and behold grass fed $10.99 per pound and the next staff person said it is grass fed "except the last 180 days, then it is corn fed" If Mariano's lies to their customers then I will shop at Sunset Foods ALWAYS. The Staff at Sunset offers far better service, truthful, responsive and are kind. read more

I want to give a shout out to the floral department. It's one of the best on the North Shore, including floral shops. The arrangements are original, beautiful and offer a range of prices and designs. Jen does such a beautiful job! It's become my go-to place when I want to give a bouquet or arrangement as a gift. The presentation with box and tissue is lovely. read more

I've only had bad experiences at both this and the Northbrook location. I used to order the pizzas from the Northbrook location but the quality of the handmade pizzas were totally dependent on who was making it. The results were often soupy watery undercooked pizzas and when I told the girl to leave it the oven a bit longer she protested...because they only are trained to do things one way. So my business and I stopped ordering from there. Ok now my recent experience 5 minutes ago at the Northfield location really seals the deal for me never even bothering to go back. Had to get bread sliced, staff stood there chatting with each other me waiting for a long time. Ok thats not so bad right? I can deal but then... Go to get half gallon of milk. First milk I touch is leaking from the top. I get milk all over my sleeve. I just put it back, its on you guys to have quality control not me. Next. I went to buy a root beer and the first one I pick up is half gone, but the top is on tight. So it too was leaking in shipment and someone just decided to shelve it anyway. Im sure its still there right this second. Finally check out. Cashier was throwing my items down the lane like it was a bowling ally. And to top it off...my sliced bread they put at the bottom of the bag with everything else on top... There is a nasty trend in these stores of bad training and now its materializing more and more. They just hire warm bodies. Even Jewel with its remodels is 1000% times better experience. And it shouldn't be, but marrianos is bad quality with a black tie. read more

Maybe it was the hype but when Domincks closed down, I had heard the rumors of Mariano's coming in. I had gone to the one by Millenium Park before most people heard of them and loved all of the food options. Could be that the novelty wore off but I thought this Mariano's was similar to the Dominicks that it replaced in terms of decor and food selection. Most "newer" Dominkcs had the sushii, italian, sandwich stations already. I guess I was expecting more food options but this Mariano's didn't "wow" me. read more

The bagger on register 17 doesn't know how to bag he put my eggs upside down...and my bread with cans. Mother is very mad.

Be wary about their e-copons they don't actually work so you have to make sure to go to the customer service desk after each time you try to use them. Bad enough you have to have their "loyalty" card, but now in order to use a coupon you have to go to their website and "clip it" to your account and all for this to not even work. read more

I am so happy that Mariano's opened in my area!! My favorite items are the sushi, chicken pot pie and fresh squeezed orange juice. Let's not forget the coffee kiosk with fantastic coffee and to die for donuts. Best grocery store in the north shore. read more

I'm not very impressed so far. Looks like they rebranded the Dominick's that used to be there on the cheap. I've heard a lot of glowing comments about Mariano's, so maybe my expectations have been set too high. This particular store is nothing special, compared to other options in the neighborhood. I hope they will bring up the store to be on par with other Mariano's in the Chicago area. read more

Perfect work from Jim in catering. Food was great to begin with, but Jim was up early, called over to ask for any final requests before completing the order (this is before the store opened) and we asked him to slice our sandwiches in small bites for the kids. Done. He let us know they have delivery services as well, and that there were many options for shopping to have them deliver. Incredible. This Marianos is a lot smaller than the one in Vernon Hills which may consult inure to the limited produce available on a daily basis. Right now is not the best time to truck it over there because of all of the construction on willow. I would highly recommend the extra 10'minute drive to detour the traffic on willow and go to a different grocery store until the construction is over. read more

I had dinner at Marianos with my son on Sat night and was lucky enough to enjoy the piano music being played by Mr. Barnett. This has been my go to grocery store and I hate grocery shopping. I ran to the store last night to pick up some things for Memorial Day weekend and after all my shopping there are two lanes wide open!! Yay! Except as I always do, I picked the wrong lane! My lane didn't have a bagger. But I look over at the lane next to me and the checker and bagger are just chatting away. I am thinking she will come over and start bagging my groceries. The manager is having an employee organize the bags at the lane behind me. So I am thinking one of these four people are going to notice me and my huge amount of groceries piling up and start bagging my groceries soon. NO, the bagger at the lane over continued to chat with the checker and make bags up for her next customer, the manager and employee continued to organize bags at the lane behind me while my groceries fill the entire belt . After ringing everything my checker begins bagging as do I because I want to go home. STILL no one of the four come over to help bag my groceries. Crazy!!! I do t know if this is my go to grocery store any longer. This is another reason I usually shop online. read more

I"m really hoping I just had a one-off bad experience. Since moving to Chicago, eight years ago, I've learned what great food should taste like. It not only made me fat, but also kind of a food snob. So, with that in mind... The chicken brests were stringy, I couldn't even choke it down...the texture just made me keep thinking "dude, this can't really be chicken?" So I threw it in the trash and we cooked up some ground beef instead. Simple taco seasoning...nothing special. It was dog-food-terrible. I'm not giving up...perhaps there was something in our pans or the oil was bad...or SOMETHING that made it our fault. Though I cooked some delicous turkey burgers from Whole Foods last night in the sam pans. Anways, we have been less than impressed with the MEAT. The place is a'ight...but we're snobby out here...and they don't hold a candle to Whole PayCheck (Foods). But Whole Foods is outragously expensive...border line offensive....so I'm really hoping Marion's can fit the bill. More to come. I'm going to go buy some more meat this weekend and I hope to correct this 1-start post. read more

I used to be a big fan of Mariano's but no longer! My husband shopped there this morning and purchased organic chicken and organic strawberries. Sadly, when he came home, we opened the chicken only to find out that it was spoiled with an awful smell. Next came the strawberries - mold and a worm in them!!! So disgusted and will never shop there again. And to top it off, I called customer service and did not receive any sort of explanation or apology. Very disappointing, Mariano's! We will never shop there again, and neither will our friends or family. read more

I was so happy to have Mariano's next to my house, I like the produce but....watch out and double check the prices , they try to overcharge me don't trust the cashiers , they don't know what they are doing , and the high school kids packing your grocery doesn't care if they put avocado and tomatoes under bag of flour and spaghetti squash on top ! read more

I found after the initial warm greeting I received when the store opened it has been less than a good experience. Some items that you carry are difficult to get. When I asked for it they didn't know what I was talking about. Then another time there was none on the shelves and no one knew how to check in the back for more or when it would come in. I wanted to order some some fish and when I called no one answered the phone for 10 minutes. Hope I get it when promised! read more

One of my favorite places to grab a quick lunch-to-go. They've got a decent selection of hot sandwiches, paired with a side of chips or veggies, and a pickle, too. Oh, and their peanut butter chocolate chip cookies from the bakery are pretty awesome. Thieves is all I can say about this place. $39.97/lb. for previously frozen chilean sea bass. Whole Foods charges $26/lb. for fresh never frozen. Additionally the service at the deli and bakery counters are atrocious. Employees would rather stand around and chat amongst themselves than serve customers. Mariano's has outstanding produce, seafood, bakery, and deli foods at reasonable prices. Their specials in the deli department are very cost effective. A month ago, they were selling lobster tails for $4 each. Great place to shop. read more

It is very friendly location. Stuff always smiling and asking if we need help. My favorite department are Sweet Shop and Smoothie bar. Especially in Sweet bar employee named Nisa is as sweet as the candies. She is very helpful, always attendive, sweet and smiley face. I have shopped there at least 15 times now. Both at the Skokie Blvd store and the Willow and Sanders store. The service is so bad I always leave there frustrated and without some produce I wanted because the cashier could not ring it up because she couldn't find the code. Ugh:( read more

I only go to the grocery store if im desperate as its close by but its one of the worst. Produce is almost always bad/moldy and the "fresh" meat in the butcher section is anything but fresh. Even the bakery is pretty bad. I bought 2 bday cakes for my kids and not only were they not decorated nicely (I could have pretty much done the same thing and i have no cake decorating skills) but one of them had my kid's name spelled wrong and the top of it was falling apart. I assume this is due to Kroger buying them out last year because since then the food quality has gone down hill. So disappointing :( read more

I am very impressed with Mariano's catering service. On very short notice, the deli manager himself delivered ten gorgeous "finger food" trays (both deli and bakery) to a funeral reception. The food on the trays looked lovely and tasted delicious, the delivery was flawless, and the staff I worked with very friendly and helpful. As a Winnetka resident with many options, I highly recommend using Mariano's for any catering occasion. read more

This Mariano's is my favorite. The Manager, Bob, is very helpful and the level of customer service is very high. I always am helped with what I am looking for. The staff there is well trained. I literally only go to the store because of its proximity to my house. They don't have a very big selection like other Mariano stores. But, for convenience, I don't mind coming here. That is, until the display I saw just now at the store. An elderly gentleman asked a worker in the bakery department about croissants. I'm not sure if the old man was being obnoxious, but I certainly know the Marianos worker in the bakery was! I watched this worker angrily walk over to a display that had boxes of croissants and proceed to throw them and rudely asked the older gentleman "how many do you want? " while he continued to toss boxes at him. He then stormed away and muttered some sarcastic remark to a coworker. He acted like a pissed off teenage girl with an attitude. Get a grip! You are in a customer service position. You're going to have to deal with a difficult customer or two without throwing a hissy fit! Managers take note!
