I was in the hood today (Northfield) and I wanted my daily green detox drink. At this location the coffee bar, gelato and juice drinks are serviced by one person. I was taking to the server and she informed me that Mariano's now owned by Kroger intends to phase out all of these sometime near the end of the year. I love Mariano's and go there either every day or every other day for my Green Detox Drink. I sure hope this isn't true as this is one of the services the separate Mariano's from Jewel. If you go to Mariano's please let them know that you would like this service to remain

The most exciting thing to happen to the north shore in 2014 was the opening of this brand spankin new Mariano's. I kid ya not...the day it opened my social media was blowing up with updates live from the new Mariano's. I avoided for a few weeks and checked it out once (I hoped) the hype had died down. I brought along my favorite 1 year old shopping companion who is half the reason (the other half being his 3 yr old sister) I bother to go grocery shopping at all. Upon entering we carted right over to the coffee bar where I placed an order for an iced latte. And a very long 10 minutes (seemed more like 10 hours) later I got a tasty one. They may need to drink a bit more coffee behind the bar themselves, but I guess slow is to be expected a few weeks after the grand opening. And slow continued behind the deli counter, bakery and everywhere else throughout Mariano's. The 1 yr old started to get impatient, especially when I wouldn't let him eat everything that made its way too the cart. He's a little confused on how this grocery shopping thing works. Fortunately for him (and me!) there were plenty of samples throughout the store to keep him full and occupied. Banana smoothies, red velvet cake and more = a happy baby. Besides the slowness I was a huge fan. The store is massive (at least compared to the grand in glencoe where I do most of my shooing), clean and as pretty as a grocery store could be. They carry everything you could possibly need at amazing prices. When they rung me up I assumed I spend around $150 since it's all the stuff I typically get at the store, but it was half of that. They can take their time to serve me coffee, deli meats, etc at those prices. Welcome to the shore, Mariano's! Thanks for giving us something to get excited about.

Not gonna' hate on Mariano's in Northbrook, because I have mostly had wonderful experiences there, but I was never so happy to walk out of that location and stop by the deli at the Northfield location, where Blanca came to my rescue and saved my day. I was getting ready to host an event the other night, and having picked up a large tray of ready made pinwheel wraps in the past, I stopped by to simply pick up another large tray, only to realize they don't make large trays anymore and one must order 24 hours in advance. I shouldn't have assumed they would have my pinwheels in stock, and that's my bad, but I really panicked. I went to the deli and found Blanca to see if they had any extra small trays in the back. Nope. But...Blanca said she would help me and would make the pinwheels for my party! I wanted to hug her. She spent time with me and calculated out the exact amount and even made a special mini tray of veggie pinwheels. What an angel! She even called me when they were ready for pickup, and I kid you not, she saved my party. I had no backup plan, or time for one. As for the person at the Northbrook deli who said she didn't think she'd be making any additional trays, and was fine with me going to another Mariano's, your store lost out on $78 because of you. Blanca will forever be my future party planning assistant ;-)

The Mariano's Northfield is a great place for birthday cakes. Shannon has decorated at least four kids bday cakes for us and the have all been great looking and delicious. I highly recommend it.

I checked Yelp and ordered from Hofherr Meat based on the stellar reviews. I often peek into Hofherr Meat when walking into Shred415 so was excited to finally try it! About 2 days before I was telling a friend where i got my turkey and she asked me how i plan to cook it. Cook it?? It literally had not occurred to me that my turkey would be raw. If it's not obvious from this review and ALL my restaurant reviews the kitchen is not where I shine. I called Hofherr to ask if they could cook my turkey and while apparently they do that it was too late to put in the request. Good to know for next time. Wednesday morning I joined the rest of the North Shore to pick up my raw turkey. I ran into a friend while waiting for it who is more of an expert when it comes to making turkeys and she asked them to give me gravy, a turkey bag (apparently easier and lessy messy to cook in a bag) and some directions. The next day I followed their directions along with some help from my bestie chatgpt. I stuck it in the oven and crossed my fingers we wouldn't be going without a turkey this thanksgsiving. We had a little mishap when the thermometer melted into the turkey (oops), but besides that it really wasn't too difficult of a process. And while I had trouble eating a turkey after seeing it raw my family was thrilled that it was perfectly moist and praised my turkey making skills. I did have a few bites and did think it was pretty good- and i dont even like turkey. I would definitely get my turkey from here again, although next time i'll be ordering a cooked turkey out of convenience. But for those of you who like to cook a turkey I recommend them!

I picked a pork item to take home and try. When I got home and started to thaw it out, I noticed that the item I purchased had expired 1 1/2 months before the purchase date. This was a use by date, not a purchase by date, so it had no shelf life. I thought any establishment would be embarrassed to sell a product 1 1/2 months after the expiration date. Now here's the problem. The Glenview store is 40 minutes from me. I am much closer to the Mt. Prospect store and I was under the impression that the Wild Fork sign on both stores means that they would both back up product sold by the Wild Fork corporation. Well Mt. Prospect wouldn't help me in any way since I did not buy the item there. Don't give me the "franchise" excuse. If Wild Fork can't figure out how to stand behind their product, no matter which location, I have no reason to ever set foot in any of their stores again.

Once I was done shopping, I had an interaction with a younger individual who looked like either an early college student or a high school student. He was pretty tall and dark-skinned, which I'm mentioning only to describe his physical appearance since I'm the same complexion as well, and I'm not saying that in a racist way. During the interaction, he saw that I didn't have a bag that was full but still proceeded to lay my items out instead of putting them in a bag. I had to tell him that I needed a bag, despite there literally being one right underneath him. He also didn't think to distribute the items between two bags and instead gave me one huge bag that was easily a good 20 pounds. After he finished putting everything into this big-ass bag, literally two seconds later he said, "Whenever you're ready to pay." I said, "Oh, okay, my bad," because I was just getting my form of payment together. Mind you, it had only been like two seconds since he finished scanning everything. I paid and said, "Thank you, have a good one," because I genuinely had no bad or negative intentions toward him. He proceeded to respond with "mhmmm." I'm aware that this neighborhood isn't necessarily the most inclusive, but when you're an African American person working in predominantly non-Black environments, I feel like it's important to treat everyone with respect, even if you may have some bias toward your own people. At the end of the day, these people will never accept you in the same way, so it's disappointing when someone who looks just like you contributes to that kind of experience. He was also the only worker who didn't really have customers coming up to him left and right, so maybe that interaction threw him off or something. And trust me, I understand what it feels like to experience discrimination. But it really is a terrifying and uncomfortable experience going into unfamiliar neighborhoods as a person of color just to run errands, especially when you're already unsure of the area, only to feel like the employees are giving you a hard time as well. What made it worse was that this was coming from an employee who looks just like me.

Although the self-checkout area had a different staff each time I went, the staff I encountered were all friendly and helpful. In the most recent trip, a staff named Marty even came up to me to say "Hello, how are you?" This gesture really set the tone for a happy checkout. Right after Thanksgiving, I saw a sign on sweet potatoes advertising 29 cents a pound with digital coupon and the Mariano's loyalty card, which was an excellent deal.  So, I called my husband to clip the digital coupon online with the home computer while I was getting some sweet potatoes.  However, my husband could not find the coupon on Mariano's website.  I saw a staff working in the produce department who looked like a manager, named Matthew, and told him about the situation.  He found that the deal had just expired even though the sign was still posted.  He still graciously honored the discounted price. At self-checkout, a staff named Meredith gladly honored the price as well without needing to verify it with Matthew.  Although I was only saving about $2, this kind of trust, friendliness, and flexibility were great customer service and made me happy. During the same visit, I noticed that Mariano's had replaced all of their shopping carts with brand new plastic ones.  These new shopping carts were clean and sturdy, and very smooth and easy to maneuver. I like that Mariano's really works on enhancing customers' shopping experience.   Kudos to the Northbrook management and staff for doing such a great job.
