Definitely a hole in the wall. Darkly lit and casual, it has a neighborhood feel to it. The food was tasty and homemade. The service was slow at best. It took 40 minutes for 2 lunch tacos withonly a handful of tables in there. They had simple menu but also a menu board listing "tacos locos" which are tacos with mutiple items in it. No prices were listed for the tacos locos but the printed menu was cheap so I thought their price would be similar. I had a Faith taco and a Pharoh taco. Both came on a larger homemade tortilla and both were delicious. The issue was that one was missing the avocado and sour cream so I asked the waitress/spazzed out daughter to bring out to me. It never came and she never came back either. When I went to pay the mother at the cash register charged $ 18 for 2 taco and water with an apology. Lesson learned. Let them scam the next person. Better than great! Maria and her staff are delightfully welcoming. We made new friends! The food was fabulous. I had the Tomlette and it was enough for 4 of me to eat. If you aren't a big eater, order the child's plate. This place is a living museum and worth a drive to visit. read more

This is a great lil hole in the wall spot. Owners are cool as hell make you feel like you're coming to see family and then serve you some of the best Mexican food. I got the Huevos Rancheros with carne guisada. All was on point. Usually I'm more of a charro beans kinda guy but their refried beans were great. I also tried their brisket tacos and good lord that's some good brisket. We will definitely be back anytime we are back in San Antonio. read more

The family owned home is just that...Home. They are an amazing family warm, inviting, and excellent customer service. The food...OMG!!! the food is the cherry on top for this awesome well known mama and papa restaurant. Tucked away is truly a gem in the city of San Antonio. My fiance and I went there on a random day out and were blown away when we did. We started to take the tacos as a to go but their warm and inviting welcome convinced us to stay and eat there. After the owners husband and my fiance talked and laughed they left us to enjoy an amazing meal that definitely left a great impression on us so much that we will be having them do some catering for us. Everything about Maria's Cafe is amazing. Our waitress Leslie was super friendly and we had the honor of meeting Maria and her husband during our dining. We had menudo which tasted like grandmas cooking as well as tripa, brisket and barbacoa tacos!! During our dining it felt like I was having dinner at a family's house where cousins and close friends kept coming over because everyone was greeted with such welcome and happiness. Maria's Cafe is the real deal. This is my go to breakfast taco spot. The cozy cafe is filled with nostalgic knick knacks from floor to ceiling. The staff is so friendly you feel like you're family. You will most likely find yourself in a conversation with Maria's husband,Tom, as he eats what is most likely his second breakfast. While Maria cooks and takes care of the tables, Tom will brag about the brisket (rightfully so, it's delicious AF) and will remind you of your dad as he calls you Mija. Maria's is a tiny little place that is easily overlooked when heading out of So Flo into the southwest side. We came to get some to go tacos, and regretted not being able to stay and eat there. The place is small and humble, but bigger than you think from the looks outside. Parking is pretty limited, but if the couple spaces behind the restaurant and the few spaces across the street are all full, the restaurant also will be most likely ;) Maria herself is inside running the show. She's been at that spot serving the neighborhood for 23 years. We'll definitely be back to take advantage of the hospitality on a slower-paced day. She started a bit wary of the strangers coming in for breakfast tacos (her homemade sign for homemade tortillas is what had caught my eye on a few runs down the street), but when we told her we were new to the 'hood, she let the guard down more and warmed more. The tacos we ordered were some of the best I've had in a long time because of those homemade tortillas. Her flour ones were thin and had that fine "dusty" feeling of a good freshly-made example; the corn were also thin, but in the good way--not the Mission prepackaged way. Any time you know your tortillas styles and have a hard time telling the difference between the flour and the corn, you're off to a good start. The fillings were equally tasty and obviously made to order. Bean and cheese on corn is the must try at any place for my bf and me. The beans were good, the cheese was a milder cheddar, which made it a good compliment, but not obtrusive to the flavor of the beans. They were a little bit too moist and "heavy" of a filling for her delicate corn tortillas, but still made a great combo. The chilaquiles tacos were great on the flour tortillas, and used the fresh corn tortillas as the chips, which was nice. Fluffy eggs and fresh tomato and jalapeno made them super-tasty. The potato and egg was also very good, albeit "clumpy", which is a common problem with that filling combo. Although there was little added, I liked the flavor--but it was even better with a dash of salt. Usually when potato and egg isn't dressed up a bit, it's really bland. It was the PERFECT canvas for her salsa. Maria's salsa... mad was that good. Red spicy amazingness. By far the best find, and that is really saying something with as good as those tacos were. With a to go experience like that, you can bet I'll be back to dine in and update you on lunch and some of her other dishes. read more

My boyfriend and I love this place for a mid-week lunch spot during lunch hour. The place is very small but we always can find a table. Stopped in this place on our last day in San Antonio after some very disappointing food at other restaurants. We were greeted by Tomas and served by his wife Maria, the owner. This is our "go to" place for breakfast. The enviroment reminds me of my grandparents cozy kitchen. The regulars make the place so welcoming and relaxing. This is not a fast food place so, be prepared to be there a bit. The wait staff either Maria herself or, Leslie they always have a smile and will recommend dishes and make you feel at home. Some specialty tacos have been named for devoted patrons that can be a mixture of savory flavors and textures. Food is fresh and tasty. Ok so based on reviews I had try this place. Big disappointment. Went into restaurant and almost killed myself because there's a down step. No sign saying as such. Sit down to order & nobody coming to rush & greet us. Waitress finally comes to take order. Asks what we want to drink and gives us menu. Leaves to get our drinks. Look at menu. Says breakfasts tacos are 69¢ til 10o'clock. I think cool I'll order 5 tacos. Waitress comes to table and my wife orders chicharon since it's included in deal. Hold your horses!!! Waitress says menu is old & prices don't apply. Tacos are 99¢ ea. Well for that price might as well get plate. Order chilIaquiles plate since it's 5.50 with cheese. Again hold your horses!!!!. Price not right old menu. 6.50 for chilaquiles. Sheeesh! Ok order placed. Key jeapordy music. Wait & wait & wait. Finally after 15 mins get our order. I forgot to say main reason I came here were the fresh hand rolled tortillas. They were fresh & hand rolled but they were the size of a saucer cup. Ok so food was decent. Tortillas were ok but for the price 23 bucks. Not worth a second visit. One last thing. Please update your menu. read more
