We vacationed in San Antonio recently & of course made our way to the River Walk. We decided to try Rita's & everyone was glad we did. Most of us got enchiladas. I tried the roasted pepper enchiladas. Maybe the best enchiladas I have ever eaten. The corn tortillas have got to be homemade. The corn taste was vibrant. The meat & sauce was so good as was the rice & beans. If you go, try a margarita. Rita's make an excellent cocktail. I highly recommend Rita's. read more

The previous time I ate in Rita's was in the early or mid 2000s, when it was at Bandera and West Hildebrand and Yelp--which Russell Simmons and Yelp CEO Jeremy Stoppelman founded in July 2004--was nonexistent. I made two or three visits in those years. The food was more memorable then but was meh during my Saturday, July 19th visit. Something I can't quite peg was missing with the carne guisada plate, and at least one of the flour tortillas was toasty. I also had as a side a weiner and egg taco that was also underwhelming. However, the service was excellent, and for that alone I give it three stars. Many times I have experienced in restaurants mediocre at best service. Due to inadequate training of restaurant waitstaff, the waitstaffs' poor attitudes, inadequate restaurant staffing or a blend thereof service in many restaurants can be lacking in one or more ways. I have no complaints about the service I received here. The mediocre meal was no fault of the server. read more

Order tacos for breakfast the eggs à la Mexicana tacos were good. The eggs were fluffy, they had plenty of peppers, tomatoes, and onions. However they were lacking a little bit of salt. I also ordered a Carne guisada taco, it was okay the beef was not as tender as usual, a little bit on the tough side. Their flour tortillas are great ..... big, soft and homemade. Serviced was quick. Restaurant was not that busy. Service was friendly. They pre- bussed our table.! The restaurant is always nice and clean. The noise level was moderate. read more

The tacos here are huge almost like the ones from Rolando's ,Ray's Taco Hut, Teran's but far much better. My favorite tacos here are the country sausage with gravy, barbacoa, carne guisada and chorizo and egg. Let's start with amibiance... the Cafe closes at 3pm, at 2:15 they began cleanup like they were shutting down for the day; vacuuming under all the tables , including mine, while qe were eating. The enciladas had an overwhelming taste of Gerbhart enchilada powder. The beef taco looked and tasted like a taco I bought at Taco Bell fourty years ago . This low rating is about customer service. On 7/22/25 the owner herself, Rita, had such an embarrassing lapse of customer service. My mother had ordered the lunch Pork Chop plate (2 chops) cut up. She was unsatisfied with the amount of pork chop she received because previous times when's she ordered the same thing, it was plenty more. This time it seemed as she got half. So before eating even a bite, she complained to the waitress. The waitress took the food and came back with the owner, Rita. They tried to spew some bullcrap in Spanish that it was because it has no bones, the meat being cut up, that that's the reason it appears smaller. Yet, like I said my mother has ordered the same thing multiple times before and the quantity of cut up meat was always significantly more. After Rita sees the hesitation on my mothers face to accept it, she tells my mother in Spanish that "it's up to you." I, my mother, and our 3rd guest are witnesses to her words, yet upon paying she tries to still charge us for the plate. Denying in an angry tone that she never said those words. Charge us for a plate that nobody ate? Charge us for a plate that betrayed their inconsistency in pork chop servings? After a somewhat heated argument with Rita, where she insinuates we're not worthy to give customer service to because we returned a plate that didn't live up to their own standard, she takes the plate off the bill and we leave. We spent almost $60 there even after she took off the pork chop plate, so this whole disagreement could not be an attempt on our part to cheat them by getting discounts. Again, my mother never even took a bite of it. No problems with the food I ate, it was as expected. But even with the food being as it is, I'm definitely not returning. read more

I have been going to Rita's for many years.. I had a bad experience with the food & I guess I should say whoever the chef's are. I ordered a pork chop taco and a portion of charro beans. The beans were ok, but they cut in alot of cilantro, stems and all, it was too crunchy , I asked the waitress if she could tell the cook not to overcook the meat because I didn't want it dry. It came and I cut into the pork chop and it was red, bleeding red! I sent it back and asked for a beef fajita taco instead and it took a long time and fajitas were burnt,overcooked! I had 2 friends who ordered menudo and it was very tough and undercooked, they took it home to cook it. So disappointing. read more

Food was good, be prepared to speak Spanish to the waitress. When you walk in just take a seat, don't bother waiting for someone to guide you. No ambiance, just felt like a church kitchen, or a local community soup kitchen or food bank. Majority senior citizens. Don't think I've ever had Israeli breakfast tacos lol read more

Rita's customers are 99% senior citizens. And what got me to write this review is that I was charged for the butter. And the tortilla chips were stale . I ask if i could get exchange of chips she said no that they were for free and I shouldn't be picky. Of course it was all in spanish. Not one of those employees spoke or under stood english. This restaurant is not well decorated and fancy as you may think. It was recommended by a co worker as we decided to stop for a quick lunch. The place wasn't packed as I thought it will be for lunch and because of its location, but the empty tables were clean and ready for new customers to sit down. I ordered the fajita meat taco salad. The bowl was shaped like an upside down sombrero. The salad had all his ingredients pretty well layered, the fajita meat was soft and cooked to perfection. Good service right as we walked in but it was a little slow to receive food. There weren't too many customers since it was a weekday morning. Tacos are huge and filled nicely. I loved Rita's and dealt with the expensive prices/ long wait. Until today, when I waited a long time just to have a hair attached to my tortilla. They didn't seem to care just took that one taco off. I had placed a togo before getting my food so it could be ready when I paid. NOPE! I had to wait much longer. You know the last couple times I've been here I've been a little taken back and disappointed. And if you read my reviews I hardly ever talk negative about an establishments cleanliness and or anything really... it really takes alot for me to really be dissatisfied, especially with a family owned business. Recently, I had made the decision to skip out from going to Ritas. Twice now either myself or my accompaniment(s) have had stuff on or in the water or drink. Twice have one of us ordered the caldo de res and it not be fully cooked. I really am not one to complain about dirty silverware... several places I've left a more positive review where I had to wipe the silverware from the dish film. The restrooms too, never said anything negative ever about a family owned business. Well this last time may have been my last. Serious food... egg? Sauce? Blatently disregarded by a the staff rolling it. Wrong order brought out, and a few other things that made me reconsider... oh and I never did care for the burley dude who usually is there breakfast running the cash register. Not an ounce of receptive quality. Those of you who have been here for breakfast know what I'm talking about, ringing stuff up like a racehorse and throwing a total out with a grimacing look. Another enjoyable lunch destination while in San Antonio. We were in the area (not the best area) and in need of food for lunch. I brought out my trusty Yelp app and found this Mexican gem among the rough. Based solely on Yelp I didn't know how big the inside was going to be, and I was surprised to know that the inside is quite large. Seat yourself upon entering and we grabbed a set in the center. Menu's were quickly brought to the table. Options on the menu were a good variety, something for everyone if you like Mexican. I wanted some taco's and decided on the Beef Fajita Taco's, three taco's served with rice and beans. Service was quick. We did have to wait a little more than I anticipated to wait for the food but when waiting for great quality food a little extra time is typically needed. When the food arrived it looked delicious. I dug right in to my food, unwrapped my tacos and got started. A large portion of beef with sauteed onions and green peppers, with melted cheese and then I topped each one with some fresh avocado. Tasted very flavorful and fresh from the kitchen. No frozen food here. The atmosphere is very family oriented and you feel at home right as you enter, something I'm always looking for. I was brought here by a good friend that insisted we start our Saturday afternoon (we went to bed late) here. Even at 1:30pm, this place was hopping for a taco joint! Coffee was too bland for my taste (i like dark roasted) but the tacos I got (2) were hard to finish because of how big they were!!! Homemade tortillas is the way to my heart. I had a potato con huevo and bean and cheese taco that ended up lasting me all the way until dinner at night. Beans are made with lard (although very tasty but watch out if you are a vegetarian like me) but you could not tell in the consistency. All signs in the restaurant were hand written with specials of the day and week on florescent poster boards. Parking lot was tiny so you may have to find another parking spot in the street next to it and around the corner if it's packed. We lucked out and got a spot by the dumpster :-/ Also, check out the tribute to, who I am assuming is the owner(?), on the wall near the entrance. Another San Antonio Gem! Rita's has always been in the neighborhood and recently I have made it my go to on various Saturday Mornings. It is usually busy on Saturday's/Sunday's but this is because of their amazing service and delicious food! When I do eat here I usually get breakfast and have not had the chance to try their lunch which I hope to do (one day!) My favorite tacos are the Bean and cheese, Chilaquiles, and Potato and Chorizo tacos. The tortillas are wonderful! they are homemade and delicious! The drinks are also great and I appreciate that they come in big cups so you don't have to worry about your glass ever being empty! Rita's is located in a little shopping center off of Bandera and Woodlawn. Parking is not too bad and most of the time you'll find someone leaving so it's easier to find parking. Every time I have walked into this establishment I am always greeted by the kind lady at the door welcoming everyone. Other than the staff being really sweet, everything else sucked...yes I said it, sucked!!! When we first got there, they said they only accept cash because their credit card mechine wasn't working. Then once we ordered, it took them longer than the usual time to get our food & I was getting impatient. People who got there after my family and I, we're getting their food before us. By the time the food came, 2 out of the 4 dishes we ordered was under cooked, the rice was smushy & the tortillas looked like they bought them at the H.E.B Mercado down the street, fake! This restaurant is my favorite restaurant to go to for breakfast. My only wish is that there were more of them. The Webbles rancheros are the freaking best! The bacon is always nice and crispy, never soggy. Wait staff as attentive and courteous. The owner is there every day working behind the scenes when needed and in the front as well of course. It's a family feeling when dining there. The chilaquiles are amazing and the chalupas! Ugh I'm so hungry now. Oh and the tortillas, HELP ME!! I'll be there tomorrow for sure after my Drs appointment. IT IS 110 DEGREES OUTSIDE AND I WOULD RATHER EAT MY FOOD OUTDOORS. It is miserably hot inside and I cannot believe the owner has her employees working is such an awful environment. Staff is awesome, the food is good but the atmosphere is horrendous. I left drenched in sweat and I weight 109lbs. I should not be sweating. What an awful experience. I drive by this place everyday on my way to work and today was my first visit. I had the special, which changes everyday. Today, Thursday, it was cheese enchilada, carne guisada, rice and beans with a tea for $6.59. The food was good but after eating my stomach has been upset. The service was OK.
