Ordinarily, I make an attempt at writing a funny/witty review, however, this time I will try to be as genuine as possible. Maria's Cafe is incredible!!! The decor is eclectic and historic and has so many stories to tell from all the memorabilia and hand written menu signs on their walls. From the fresh from your own mama's kitchen authentic Mexican food and flavors, to the warm welcome from Maria herself, her husband Tom and their daughter, Leslie, we felt at home the minute we arrived and can't wait to go back. The brisket taco is, dare I say, the best I've ever had. The chicken soft taco with homemade corn tortillas was as mouth-watering as you can get. The refried beans...don't get me started. Wow. Call for Maria's specials We have to go to San Antonio once a month on Tuesday. We called Taco Tuesday! This place is MORE than just tacos. We spoke to the daughter of the owner of this small house that has been converted into a restaurant for an hour. Leslie recommended us to try the specials. Wow, she did not steer us wrong! My husband ordered carnitas and I had the enchiladas verde topped with fresh onions and goat cheese. We had a beef enchilada as an appetizer. I am not going to lie it was pretty hard to share with my husband but I did. This place might be over looked because the location but if you are coming from out of town it is worth the trip! Phenomenal! We were in San Antonio for the weekend and found Maria's Cafe on Yelp. I was excited to try the food and it did not disappoint. Maria's exceeded my expectations and I can say that this is the best Mexican food I have ever had. The flavors are wonderful and the homemade tortillas are unreal. Try the brisket! Maria, Tom, and Leslie made us feel comfortable and at home although we are from out of town. The atmosphere is lovely and the service is top-notch. I cannot think of a single complaint other than the restaurant is not in my neighborhood. If you live in town or are visiting San Antonio do yourself a favor and eat here. You will be glad you did. I am not sure how anyone could give this place less than 5 stars. If they do then they must be the competition because this is the best Tex Mex I have had maybe ever. The brisket tacos, carne guisada and beef enchiladas were amazing. The owners were great. They talked us through the entire process of making up your own dish. There are tons of items off the menu on the walls that other customers have requested. The owners, Tom and Maria are great and make you feel like you just came home for a family dinner. Wow where do I even begin!! My family and I live in Round Rock, TX and were making our way to Garner State Park and planned on stopping to eat in San Antonio as we know they have authentic Mexican food. I went to YELP to check on reviews for the best Mexican restaurants around and Maria's Cafe had 4.5 stars with great reviews so that's where my husband headed. It's a super small place but filled with so much life. The owners husband, Tom, made us seriously feel like we were at home in our family's kitchen. He joked with us, talked about the menu and told stories about different events they have there. It's an extremely family oriented place. Mostly everyone that walked through the door they knew on a first name basis and they were greeted with hugs. It really made me want to stay all day to just hang out and talk. Maria works both the register and in the kitchen. Their daughter waits on tables with a continued smile on her face. Their energy just really brought out so much positive energy. So now about the food. One word .... AMAZING!! I had bacon and eggs with beans and potatoes. Everything had such great flavor. The flour tortillas are homemade. My husband had scrambled eggs with barbacoa and it was just the perfect moisture and flavor. I highly recommend this place if you are in the area. I know I'll be back. I don't give five stars because of my critical nature generally speaking, but this was an amazing experience. I felt like I was in a time warp transported into my family's kitchen growing up. The service was amazing, the moment I sat down our server Leslie said "how it works here is order whatever you want and we will make it even if it's not on the menu." Love that opening line. Our food was fresh, flavorful, and the brisket taco was moist and lean. I found a new spot three blocks away and super excited to go back for specials! She's got great tacos with either fresh flour OR corn tortillas, a varied menu, and a friendly smile. My brother and I come here often to get our "Huevos Rancheros" fix and fresh, hot coffee. A few weeks back. My wife and I decided to go check out this place that came out on elder eats. We wanted to see what was all the rave about. When we first showed up the first thing I noticed is that there was very very limited parking, the wife was waiting in the car while I went to check out the place to see what the wait time was. I asked the guy at the front door which later I found out was the owner. I asked him how long the wait was and he took a peek inside and said if you don't mind sitting with other people, you could sit down right now and so my response to him was well let me check with my wife and see what she thinks about it And he made some derogatory comment to the effect of oh come on man you won't sit with other people and sort of left it out. The wife later came to meet me at the front door and I asked her if it was OK we sat with other people It was a little uncomfortable because we were sitting with people we didn't have any clue who they were and we couldn't have a private conversation, we sat down, the waitress came by took heorder for drinks. I ordered a coffee my wife ordered a water, and it took forever to get her water. The place is very tiny, pretty packed. assumed to be the owner's wife and the owner's daughter And they were taking a long time. Needless to say I would never go back to such a place with bad service. The food was very pricey for what we got. That's my two cents. read more

So I wanted to give a shout out to Maria's cafe on a job well done. A few weeks ago Maria's cafe was on Google media and social media and just all over San Antonio stating how this Corona virus has affected Her business. I do understand everyone's hurting every corporation every mom pop style restaurant is all hurting but this restaurant in particular is a small mom and pop and one of the best places to eat at. So on Saturday morning I decided to stop by and pick up some breakfast tacos now before I ended up showing up I did call to make sure that they were open since I'm coming from the Sea World area 151 patrico area I wanted to make sure that the business was open. So I went ahead and place an order and let them know that I was going to be traveling about 15 minutes to pick up my order so when I got there they did take a little while but you know what everything is made fresh from a tortillas to your breakfasts so the wait wasn't the problem. As I was waiting outside for my order a gentleman who I believe is someone that is a involved with the restaurant had a barbecue spit and was smoking leg quarters and sausage and was just just creating so much smoke that I was getting hungry and more hungry in more hungry as was standing there waiting for my food, Needless to say I had such a great time I got home and I ate all of my tacos, my family was just in awe of the flavor the fresh tortillas the fresh brisket shredded was so flavorful and the green salsa was out of this world The salsa was super spicy but it added so much flavor to the food.... I wanna thank Maria the owner of the restaurant and the server who was so nice and always had a smile and the gentleman that was outside barbecuing was very nice he even gave me a pilon (freebe) and gave me a leg quarter in the piece of sauces to bring home.... Definitely a hole in the wall. Darkly lit and casual, it has a neighborhood feel to it. The food was tasty and homemade. The service was slow at best. It took 40 minutes for 2 lunch tacos withonly a handful of tables in there. They had simple menu but also a menu board listing "tacos locos" which are tacos with mutiple items in it. No prices were listed for the tacos locos but the printed menu was cheap so I thought their price would be similar. I had a Faith taco and a Pharoh taco. Both came on a larger homemade tortilla and both were delicious. The issue was that one was missing the avocado and sour cream so I asked the waitress/spazzed out daughter to bring out to me. It never came and she never came back either. When I went to pay the mother at the cash register charged $ 18 for 2 taco and water with an apology. Lesson learned. Let them scam the next person.
