This used to be my wife's and mine favourite Greek restaurant, particularly for its great and welcoming service. Until tonight. I ordered online 2 times kleftiko and asked for rice to be substituted by potatoes. First, when I came to pick it up, the less than enthusiastic server wanted to charge me for the order I already paid online. I then had a feeling that the bag was too small for 2 orders. Luckily, I checked and there was only one. I was then waiting for another half hour. I was clearly not their priority. I was standing near the cashier, pushed by passing servers from left and right as I was clearly in their way. Nobody offered me a chair or a glass of water while I was waiting. When I finally got the second order (without much of an apology) and took it home, I realized that the order was all wrong, with more rice than potatoes. The so-called Greek salad was pathetic. Had the Dolmades dinner delivered with 4-5 dolmas and two quarters of a medium sized potato. The food was good (not great) but hardly worth the charge. A side pita came with 3 small pita circles I would have loved to keep and use later but quickly hardened to frisbees. The delivery man was short and somewhat rude. We came here for a dinner and since Greek food portions are large, we ordered scallop and prawn sovulaki and lamb shoulder for the three. It took awhile to have the food arrive our table because there was a big party of people before us but considering this factor, i think I can say that the food came out in a reasonable time. The restaurant seems to be a family run business, that two waitresses are mother and daughter. I think the father perhaps was working in the kitchen. In terms of food, it was fine. Portions were large as expected of Greek food. Lamb shoulder was tender and meat seemed of good quality. For scalop and prawn souvlaki, i cant give a good rating as scalop size was small and quality wasnt too good -- just ok. Servers were refilling water in time and they were friendly. They were nice enough to give us a basket of bread refilled without an extra charge. Interior was spacious and had that European Greek feel. Music added more of cozy summer mediternnean atmosphere. However there was a spiderweb with a dead moth dangling on the light fixture located on the table on the right. That needs to be cleaned for sure. My thought: It is a decent Greek restaurant but nothing outstanding. Worth a visit if you are close by but dont think its worth a trip to come here if you are far away. read more

I'm a Kitsilano local (15 years). I order from here often. Once in a while, I try another spot recommended by others.....I'm often disappointed. Maria's Taverna has never disappointed me. The food is delicious, portions are great, and all at a great price. They offer free delivery too. My favorites are the lamb shoulder and the moussaka. The location is at the heart of kits. The service is pretty quick and friendly. The restaurant is small but it makes for a cozy family atmosphere. Enjoy! read more

I had walked past this place many times over the last 3 months. I finally stopped by after my chores today. I couldn't figure out where to start. I eyed one other guest eating the baked Spaghetti so I ordered that but was also craving the chicken souvlaki . So I had both. The chicken was tasty.. Very juicy and flavorful and the spaghetti also was great. I wouldn't hesitate going back in anytime. Greg whom I met and his brother were very hospitable and he shared some insights into his families restaurant! I dig that the whole family is part of this place and they keep it going together. I was busy all day spring cleaning. Getting rid of the crap that insidiously builds up when you're not paying attention. Anyways, I friend asked me out for dinner, and since I was home all day working I said yes. My friend read my Kerkis Greek Taverna review and he wanted to try it out. When we got there I was surprised to discover the Kerkis is closed! Their business closed Dec 28th so they are gone! Anyways, unperturbed we ended up driving around the area and we ended up at another Greek restaurant: Maria's Taverna! Overall, it was a pretty good experience. We shared an appetizer: fried squid. I had the lamb shoulder as my main course (that comes with Greek salad, potatoes, and rice. You get a pretty good size platter of food for $20! And the lamb is super tender and tasty! Just the right amount of fat! We ended up sharing a baklava for dessert. It was good but to me the walnuts were a bit too chunky. They should have chopped them a bit more. Next time I have a hankering for Greek I'll know where to come! read more

Located on West 4th across from the Safeway. Decided to go there for dinner with a friend as we both love Greek. We were not disappointed as the food was authentic Greek. Great portion sizes as well. Prices are not cheap, but the prices for wine by the glass are fantastic deals. Menu is pretty extensive so lots of choices for any lover of Greek food. Service was exceptional. Incorrectly charged us twice on an order through Just Eat so I called to address the issue. Was told I should have told the driver, however the driver demanded payment from my daughter before giving the food. She said she would send the driver to reverse the charge. The driver then called and said he would not return and said they were having issues with their machine so I should just call Just Eat. I said no Just Eat charged us appropriately and the error was Maria's. So he then said he was trying to reverse the charge however there is no pending refund on my account. So 70$ order is now a 140$ order and Maria's thinks I am nickel and diming! read more

Ordered from M's just last night and was quite happy with their food. Spanakopita was tasty, pita bread was warm and fresh, chicken souvlaki skewer was tender, juicy and tasty, Tadziki was great! This place is still a bit expensive but they are of higher quality and flavor. I do feel their Greek salads are too small for the meals you order with what you pay. Not sure why you get so many potatoes and then this dinky little salad. I also have noticed the last few times I have orders for take out they are about 15mins longer than they say they will be. Keep that in mind so you are not waiting for your food. Other notes... Cute little restaurant inside. Way better calamari than most Greek places in kits. Don't get me wrong, food here is above par from other Greek restaurants we been around Vancouver. We were so happy that we found a decent Greek place as our go to place until everything went done hill. It was a very busy night since they had a big party of 14 people seating on the center of the restaurant. We were seated on the side tables facing the bar/kitchen. The table behind us was getting impatience as other tables for their food to be served. The manager/ server kept on apologizing for the delay. We finally got served our meal. The manager/ server came over was serving most of all the table. We finished our meal and was waiting for our pizza to be boxed and it was just seating there on the service table near the ladies restroom. I was facing the bar, kitchen window pass over, clear sight of the restrooms. I could see everything that was going on from my vantage point. I noticed him picking up the plates to be served, before serving them he had this finger dipped on the food and he started licking his finger, touching the plates that he served on three different tables. He wanted to use the ladies restroom but it was in use touch the door handle, then went to the men's restroom did the same thing, then return to start serving the plates, licked his finger again and again. He hold a dessert plate, assuming he was going to eat it, unfortunately dip his finger then served it. He didn't washed his hands. This was so unsanitary and gross. Simply unbelievable! Finally, he boxed our pizza, took it to the bar area, I saw him open the box slide the pizza, touch one pizza slice, put it on top of the rest of the pizza. After we left the restaurant I dump the pizza box in the trash bin outside the restaurant. We heard and found out he was the son of Maria the owner by introducing his mother Maria to the table behind us. Gross, sad, and disgusting! Public health should inspect this restaurant. read more

Full disclosure, I did order through DoorDash. So I can only speak of the food. I had been craving calamari for a long time so that was a must. It was cooked very well. Tender and no chew at all. It would have benefited from some salt and the tzatziki was a little bland for my liking. Still very eatable but I probably wouldn't order again. For entree, I had to get the lasagna. The Greek twist in the spices of the sauce always bring great comfort and this one was no exception. A little lighter on the spices than some of the others I have had, but the generous portion of sauce made sure that every bite was dripping with that delicious sauce! Now I don't know about you, but my favourite part of a lasagna dinner is the cheese. Most of the time, I can simply peal it back as a thin layer and put it to the side. I skip dessert and use the cheese as a substitute! Well this time I didn't have a thin layer. It was close to half an inch thick. So it made for a second entree really. I'll be back for sure. Blegh. My boyfriend and I went here one night after work. We'd heard high praises of Maria's Taverna and wanted to give it a try. We ordered our 'usual' that we get at most Greek restaurants - kalamari, lamb souvlaki, saganaki, tarama, and greek salad. The kalamari was tough (resulting in a rubbery texture) and entirely underseasoned. The rice pilaf that came with it tasted like it came out of the box. The potatoes were flavourless. The souvlaki was small, but probably the best thing that we ate the entire meal. The saganaki tasted like it was made just out of feta cheese -- which isn't necessarily wrong, but it's not as flavourful as the other cheeses they could have possibly used, and the saltiness of the feta is difficult to cut through with just a squeeze of lemon. The cheese itself also tasted cheap. Like the rest of the meal, the greek salad was underseasoned and, all in all, wholly underwhelming. And the tarama was too lemony and too heavy (probably a result of using the wrong type of potato, or not boiling the potato long enough). And on a weird side note: smells bother me quite a lot. I appreciate that they clean the store thoroughly, but less appreciate smelling bleach alongside my bland and tough kalamari. read more

Delicious greek food with plenty of flavor, spices and overall a great experience. My husband and I were in the area for a day trip and decided to try Maria's. I have to be honest, the prices were a little jolting at first and I was hesitating spending $20 a plate for a quick lunch but I was pleasantly surprised. I had the veggie "pie"...basically spinach and feta in filo pastry dough with a side of rice, greek cucumber and tomatoe salad and the most delicious potatoes I have ever had! I've had plenty of greek food ranging from the Pacific nothwest to California...man were these potatoes good! I don't understand the comments regarding the nonchalant server, we had a great experience today and our server was nothing but pleasant. He wasn't too laid back nor was he too pushy. The chicken souvlakis are great and full of spices, I must admit that it was a little bit salty, but that's just me, I am not into salt. The tzatziki is awesome! My number one place for eating Greek food. We usually go to Stephos when we want cheap Greek food. But when it's a special occasion..we come here. The family has run this business since I was a kid, and I've been back at least 3 times this summer and still see the same mom and pop cooking in the back. This place is known for their slow roasted lamb platters. This place can be pricey but totally worth it. I'm a huge Fan of Greek food, having been to the majority of restaurants located in the lower mainland. Even during the annual Greek festival on Broadway we held off on buying the roasted lamb there to come eat here. Guaranteed Best Greek Food around. (Ps. I went here with two friends for dinner. This is a local Greek restaurant that has been in the neighborhood for over 25 years. The decor is homey and the place seems to especially attract local families with kids. My two-star rating comes mainly from the service. My two friends and I were seated promptly, however our food took over 45 minutes to arrive. This was long after other tables that had been seated after us got their food. When we inquired about the delay with the manager, he replied with a curt "I'll see." While the food came out shortly thereafter, the attitude never improved. Perhaps it was because we were visibly the youngest customers in the dining room, but the manager never smiled or greeted us. This was strange given that he circled round the place several times chatting up all the regulars. This clearly differential service created an awkward dining environment in which we felt like we were not treated as kindly and respectfully as other guests. I would say that the food prices are moderate to high given the quality. Two of us ordered $13 small pizzas. These turned out to be deep dish style and were quite filling, though not remarkable. My other friend ordered the prawn dinner ($18) which came with rice and a Greek salad. There was nothing ostensibly wrong with the food. The pizza and prawns tasted fine. However, there was no hook that made me want to eat any of the dishes again. Given the average quality of the cuisine and less-than-average service, I won't be coming back. read more

This is a place my boyfriend and I have been going to for the past 5 years. After a couple times, we started sitting at the bar, and have had nothing but positive experiences there. The food is delicious - our favorites definitely have to be the tzatziki (it's sooo fresh tasting and delicious) with warm pita bread, and the saganaki. I usually get the Spanakopita Dinner as I do not eat meat, and it is delightful. Friendly staff, have had many chats with the owner also and he is a joy to talk to. Maria's is a terrific spot to go for Greek food if you find yourself in the Kitsilano neighbourhood. I was brought here by my best friend, her mother and her sister after we had spent the morning shopping for bridesmaid dresses along Main street. Considering that the three of them are Greek, I knew that the food was going to be pretty darn good being that they were willing to drive across town to eat at Maria's specifically. Always trust Greeks when it comes to food -I learned that at a young age. Once again, they weren't wrong. We opted to eat Greek style, and ordered several dishes to be shared among the four of us. While everything was terrific, I have to give special shout-outs to the tarama, saganaki and the kalamari. They were some of the most delicious dishes I have eaten in a while, and I'd order them again in a heartbeat. By the end of our meal, it felt as though we had sampled half of the menu and everything was wonderful. In addition to the food, the service was fantastic as well. Our waiter was attentive without being overbearing, and the dishes were brought out soon after ordering. We ordered delivery pizza and a tziki appy on a Monday night. After it hadnt arrived after an hour I called and they said it was on the way. Another 30 minutes later it still wasnt here. I called again and they told me they had 5 or 6 deliveries to do at the same time. The guy arrived 5 minutes later. The pizza was cold. The pita was ice cold. Had a delicious meal while visiting Vancouver. A friend and I had the tamara and hummus as appetizers. The warm flat bread was great. It was my first experience to try tamara, which is a very smooth spread to be eaten with the flat bread. For entrees, we chose lamb souvlaki and mousaka. The portions are substantial and the sides were really good. Although the lamb was good, I'd say the highlight was the mousaka. The rich bechamel sauce has great flavor and is very satisfying. The dining room is open to the street since it was summer so it was comfortably bright and not too noisy. read more

Fab! I ordered delivery on Easter Sunday (a bunch of grad students too busy studying to cook) and it was delicious, arrived quickly and was SO MUCH food. I need to remember that prices here are significantly lower than Australia and what constitutes a $60 dinner for two there would likely feed 3-4 people here. I have two huge containers of amazing homous and tzatziki leftover which were both amazing. Prawns were fresh and char-grilled, the chicken souvlakia so tender and the meatballs delicious. I'd only say the dolmades had to little filling for too much grape leaf and a few stringy stems made it difficult. We have been both patrons of as well as ordering food from Maria's Taverna for 22 years. First from Kitsilano, then McKenzie Heights, then Southlands and tonight we ordered from an address on Musqueam Drive in Vancouver. Maria's took our order and only when they heard our address, Musqueam Drive, did they declined to deliver to our address. All of a sudden we were "outside of their area". After 22 years, Maria's has sadly lost us...since we are white immigrants from South Africa, this resonates even more. read more

The food was excellent and good value for the money. Had the saganaki, kleftiko, beef souvlaki, and calamari. Kleftiko was particularly tasty and a great portion. Great location, comfortable setting, with appealing open window to the street level. Only negative was the service. Prompt and professional, but notably cold and lacking in friendliness - this detracted from the atmosphere and experience. read more
