Amazing Lamb Kleftiko I went into Maria's Taverna for lunch last week and ordered the Kleftiko. I am extremely picky when it comes to Greek food and lamb, I ordered this because my friend said that he'd had it before and it was amazing. We both agreed that the Kleftiko was tender and flavorful. It was fork tender, juicy and full of flavor from their marinade. We are working in Vancouver west side again next week and are going to eat at Maria's on the last day of our project. I should admit that this place surpassed my expectations and I can arguably claim this is the best greek place in town. The roast lamb was fresh, huge, and delicious. The salmon plate was also great. The pizza seems to be a signature dish as well. The staff were friendly and the service was reasonable. Will definitely come back and recommend everyone to check this place out. Oh my, do yourself a favor and order the lamb shoulder. It is perfectly succulent and they do something magical to their potatoes. I know they have been around for years and I'm shocked I've never had their food pre-pandemic, so I'm looking forward to when they open up for a sit-down meal. I don't usually do this but I felt compelled to write a second review about Maria's Taverna and confirm my previous 5 stars rating. I lived in Kitsilano for a couple of years and went there many times, I miss it a lot. Every single time I've been there, the food tasted fresh, the flavors were dead on and the service was good. I want to add that the chicken Souvlakia is still a stunner and should be eaten at least once in a life time or more so once every month. The Tzatziki is out-of-this-world fresh, the bread is warm. The "Greek" salad is made out of fresh fresh FRESH vegetables and feta cheese. Geez you know what, everything is just so good. Just go! The place is bright and has two light wells in the ceiling which gives Maria's Taverna a natural lighting that is amazing on a sunny day; you feel like you're outside eating under an umbrella in the middle of a field. Ok maybe i got carried away. The place is a little small and can get a little loud (more wine please!) but the ambiance is great and everybody is enjoying the food and the time spent there. The best part of Maria's Taverna is to look at people eating their food, the faces of satisfaction every time the fork leaves the mouth. This is absolutely my favourite Greek restaurant in Vancouver. The original location in Kits is a shade better than the Denman location. Always, always, always have some homous. It's so good. Basic, yes, but their dips and their warm, toasted pita are really delicious. I can't recall every having had anything but the Kleftiko (roast lamb shoulder) because it's so good I can't bring myself to order anything else for a main. I have this problem at all Greek restaurants and, frankly, I don' t consider it an actual 'problem'. Like all Greek places, they give you way too much rice. Oh well. It's good rice, I just never make it through the whole pile. The potatoes are even better. And the lamb. Oh the lamb... Falls apart at a touch. Full of flavour. It there's room for an appetizer or we have enough people to load on more dishes and not explode, the Keftedes and the Saganaki are outstanding! On the very, very rare occasion there's any room left after dinner, they make a beautiful hot dessert with filo and a citrusy custard inside. I've only had it once due to stomach capacity issues. read more

The hummus is amazing (I could make a meal of just hummus). Delicious saganaki, and yummy souvlakis. The only downside is the rice, which is kinda blah, but who cares?? This restaurant has such a cosy, warm atmosphere to it. The food was spectacular. Would highly recommend the lamb shoulder, but everything of the menu was superb. Went with a group of friends and we ordered a ton of different dishes and shared it amongst ourselves. The service was so friendly, prompt and knowledgable. I first learned about Kleftiko at Maria's. It's a lamb shank that is baked but falls off the bone it's so tender. It's served with a Greek salad and rice on the side. The vibe at Maria's is perfect for those who love a more European style of dining. It's very close seating, noisy but the food is really good. I think everyone that works here is Greek or related to someone who is. They also serve generous portions of Souvlaki and calamari. For those who are not watching what they eat, I would recommend the deep-fried cheese. read more

Just up the street from our B and B is this lovely and homey gem. Don't confuse with the 'other' Greek restaurant a block away as it's not anywhere as good. The appetizer platter was huge and so yummy. I rarely find hummus as good as mine (!!) with lots of garlic and lemon and this one was terrific. The service was terrific and we took lots of leftovers back to Seattle with us! We'll definitely be going again on our next trip north! read more

Great place for Greek in Kits! Shared a saganaki - pan fried goats cheese, kleftikos - lamb leg and chicken souvlaki with my friend. Definitely more than enough for both of us as all portions are quite generous. Saganaki was great served sizzling with a nice squeeze of lemon. Kleftikos was served with rice pilaf, potatoes and Greek salad, lamb leg was was very flavorful, well spiced and tender. Chicken souvlaki was also rice, potatoes and salad, well marinated and chicken breast was moist. Great food and service! Will come back :) read more

Very delicious, excellently seasoned food. I shared the Maria Platter with the person I was with and it was very tasty. Lots of protein options on the platter and the flavours between the seafood, chicken, and beef were varied and complimented each other. We were stuffed from dinner and had food to take home. Food was good, but really slow, not-so-friendly service. We waited about a half hour for our appetizers to arrive. Literally two minutes later, our entrees arrived. Usually the appetizers arrive well before your entrees and not with it. And when it came time to pack up our left overs, that took another 10 minutes just to get their attention. It was the best Greek restaurant I've ever been to. The hummus and ek mek ( not sure about the spelling). Calamari and beef sulvakia was spot on. The customers service was superb. First tried this place several years ago but had a completely 'couldn't-care-less' server who gave us the bare minimum service so I never felt the urge to go back, until the recent Dine-Out Vancouver. We gave it a second try and the place was full and the servers were working hard but overall they seemed overwhelmed (ill-prepared?) for the fact they might be busier and there was some confusion & delay over food and they ran out of potatoes! That said, when the food came it was okay - even though my husband twice clarified his order was for prawn souvlaki but he still got given chicken. Great greek food! We ordered the greek platter for two, but it servers 3 easily. Can't go wrong. The atmosphere in the place is also nice, although it doesn't fit large groups very well. In the evening there are the traditional candles in every table! really nice place. read more

In fairness, the food here is pretty tasty and the prices are on par with many other local Greek places. My issue, however, is the service. We have ordered delivery from here 3 times. The first time, we had no real issues, other than a really slow delivery time. The second time, we waited an hour and then got a call from the restaurant stating that the delivery driver had been in a fender bender, so they were remaking the food and sending it out with a different driver. When the new driver came, he apologized that the kitchen had lost our order. We are reasonable and if they had called and just said this rather than making up an accident, that would have been fine. Now, we feel lied to. We were reticent to order from them again, but since we enjoyed the food, decided to give them another shot. This time, the food came swiftly, but they gave us the appetizer version of our entrees, but charged us for the entree version. While the food is great, we're never going back due to poor service and errors. read more

The worst restaurant I have been. Poor and slow service. If possible, I want to give it less than 1 star. 4 of us were led to a table for 4 where the table was not fully set up. Some of us were missing plate, some missing napkins, some missing forks. There were only 2 other tables occupied, they were not even busy. We sat for a long time being ignored, nobody came to offer water or bread. We had to ask for them. They acted as if water and bread were not free. After we finally got our orders in, after being ready but got ignored for a long time. It was another 30 minutes between placing the order and the bread and first appetizer came. With 4 people on our table the fat man brought us one FULL cut up piece of pitta nothing else with it. The appetizers were nothing to sing about. After that, it was good 30 minutes nothing else came. I got up trying to pay so we can leave, not wanting to wait any longer. The loud fat manager said Our food was ready, would be served within a minute. 5 minutes later the food came. The fat man served the food to us as if he was looking for compliment for serving. Indicating didn't he served the bread and appetizer ... Yeah, a whole half an hour ago! Now that the food had come, but it was over done, too salty. Again, no pepper no Parmesan cheese, we had to ask for everything in order for them to be brought to us with an attitude as if we were to pay for them. I have not had food so bad, services is worse than the food, they don't diverse to charge the level they are charging. Come to think of it, they should be paying me to go to a dump like this, don't expect me to eat there. It is amazing they have any customer at all. It sure is my worst restaurant experience in my life. If the operators have problem providing any services they should not be in restaurant business. read more

This was the most disappointing delivery experience of my life. We ordered 2 chicken skewers and a large greek salad ($45.00). The food arrived in a paper bag that had been tipped over in the delivery car. Oil had leaked everywhere and somehow the delivery driver pretended he had no idea until I pointed it out. As we talked, oil leaked all over the floor. This continued throughout my house. Thanks. The food was OK, but the portions were pathetic. For $45, I would hope for a little more. Just had the kleftiko entre and tzatziki dip. Both were great. Best tzatziki dip I have ever had. Nice portion and it had finely shredded cucumber in it. Don't leave this place without trying it! The slow roasted lamb was fabulous...very tender and great flavor. The meal was large enough for two of us to share. It was accompanied by delicious Greek salad and roasted potatoes along with rice. Very tasty. Had a table by open window overlooking the sidewalk. Nice music. read more

Please do not listen to all the rave reviews! I've never had a more baffling dining experience in my life! This place was recommended to us, so as we were in the neighbourhood, we thought we would give it a go. We were seated promptly, and the waiter told us he would be right back with some water. A few minutes later, we were fed up of sitting in almost darkness, so we grabbed a candle from another table that had been vacated. 20 minutes later, there had been no sign of any service, and nor had we received any water, so my wife got up and approached one of the waiters to see what was happening. "That isn't my section" was his response. He then came over and brought us water and took our food orders. I fancied a drink, and the drinks menu states "Please ask your server for our daily specials". "What drinks specials do you have tonight?" I asked. He looked very confused. "We don't do drinks specials here" said the waiter. So I showed him the drinks menu. "What, you mean like a special price for drinks?" he said, still looking utterly confused. "Don't worry, I'll stick with water" I said. "What, you don't want a drink?" he said. What an absolute farce!! While we were waiting for our food, numerous people came in and stood there waiting to be seated. After a while of nobody even acknowledging them, they left. This happened a few times! Another thing happened while we were waiting for our food. A lady at the table next to us had asked for the rest of her food to go. When they brought it to her, they had not put her lamb in the container, so she was just left with some potato. The waiters was response was "The kitchen sometimes makes mistakes" and "I'll speak to the manager to see if he can give you credit". I'd be demanding a heavy discount on my meal if they threw out half of it!! The food came. It was actually pretty good. Nothing to write home about, but pretty good. I had the moussaka and my wife had the meatballs. We both preferred each others dishes, so we swapped. The meatballs would have been much nicer with some sort of sauce (which is what I expected as this is what I have had in the past at Greek restaurants). Oh, once we had finished our meal, numerous different servers kept coming and offering us water. Like, every two minutes! Haha. Too little, too late, I'm afraid! I really feel like Maria's Taverna is a restaurant that is living on it's past reputation. They need to MASSIVELY step up their game in the service department before I would ever go back again. I did tip, but only 10%, and I only tipped in the hope that the chefs would receive some of this money, as the service 100% un-tipworthy! They should also drop their prices as well, as it was all bit expensive, especially when considering our overall experience here. read more

I was pleasantly surprised to find Maria's Taverna in Kits. I used to go to the one on Denman street but it closed down a number of years ago. I was really happy to find this place because they have great Saganaki (fried cheese) and my favorite Kalamari Skaras platter which is grilled squid in garlic and onion sauce. It comes with Greek salad, rice pilaf, tsaziki sauce and roasted potatoes. I haven't seen this particular dish at other Greek restaurants. The server was fast, friendly and professional. She told me that this location has been around for 30 years and was the original one. I can see why it's successful. The service is very good and so are the prices. The eatery has a nice airy feel to it and there's plenty of sunshine streaming in through the windows. It feels like you're in Greece. There's also some Greek music gently playing in the background. I had been to Maria's quite a few times over the years but when I went early last Monday evening, the service was so poor that I doubt if I will go back again. It started when we asked the server at the front door for change for our parking meter. To my surprise he suggested we go next door to the bakery. I thought he might not realize we were customers so I told him we had come to eat. He then opened his wallet and showed us his lack of change. This is what the float in the cash register is for. I was certainly not expecting that kind of resistance as I stepped inside the restaurant. So we went next door for change. In restrospect, if we hadn't been so startled I would not have gone back in. The staff spent some time talking at the back of the room. While our waiter, who had been unhelpful with change, was adequate, it was the waitress whose expression and body language made it clear that she didn't want to be there. Her grim face, even as she seated guests and tone of voice were very much out of place in a restaurant setting. Asking her to wrap my leftovers, I felt I was asking someone with no restaurant experience who did not want to be disturbed. The food? The lamb souvlaki seemed to have chili on it which was odd for Greek food. The tsatziki and salad did not taste particularly fresh. The food was acceptable but, like the service, was without energy. Maria's has a good reputation in the neighbourhood and it seems they don't realize it takes effort to maintain it. Competition is all around. read more

Food was delicious, service was fantastic, helpful and done with a smile. We just happened to be walking by and decided to give Maria's a try, first and foremost, before even sitting down I asked if my allergies could be accommodated, the hostess who greeted us with a happy smile, went to check and to my delight said yes. The atmosphere is a traditional Greek restaurant atmosphere, it felt good, clean and welcoming, upon sitting down our waitress came prepared with a list of items I could have from the menu given my allergies, and to my surprise there were quite a few dishes I could have. I ordered the dolmathes plate and it was delicious, tasted home cooked and was very satisfying, I was impressed with the fact that there was absolutely no cross contamination what so ever, they certainly took my allergy seriously, to be honest the last time I ate at a Greek restaurant there was cross contamination with the food and I went home with an allergic reaction, so I'm always apprehensive when going to a Greek restaurant. In this case I will certainly be back to Maria's, thanks for the great service and delicious food! read more

Came here for lunch and ordered the Maria's pizza which was delicious! The pizza tasted home made and had very fresh toppings. The only downside was I was on my lunch break and the pizza took forever to make and come so I ate a slice and saved the rest for leftovers. I definietly think I'll come back one day and try the Greek food. read more

Went there for a birthday. There was 13 of us. The food was good but we felt very rush by the waiter. He even asked us to place our orders before all the guests arrived. He wanted to get the job done as quickly as possible at the cost of good manners. It was 7PM, maybe he was hoping for a second seating.
