Overall, pretty good BBQ. I ordered the pork platter and it was smoky and flavorful. They have two house barbecue sauces and both are tasty. The side of pork and beans and also the coleslaw were both average. Got a piece of red velvet cake for dessert and it was also average. Restaurant is open and clean inside, staff was friendly. The tables are covered in advertisements, which was a bit of a turn off, not to mention gaudy.

Near the head of Talladega parkway just a bit north of I-20, this is a local place, bbq that's proper in texture and flavor but a tad dry for my taste. This is vinegar-based bbq, so a little drier not unexpected as this was vinegar-based. Flavors were on point, I enjoyed the sides. The restaurant is spacious and comfortable. The Brunswick stew was a pleasant surprise, just the right density & thickness. The other sides were unremarkable. Banana pudding was tasty. I did not experience any of the social issues encountered by other reviews, but I try to avoid giving off any external vibe other than "hungry" (and possibly "clumsy" or "doofus" or "too tall'n'wide for this seat").

This picture should say everything! Beans are good and I love the smoke taste with some bark in my bbq.

Can't believe I didn't know about this place as I pride myself on knowing where the best BBQ places are! in one word (WOW) very good pulled pork and service but could not believe how cheap it was. It was worth twice as much because I've paid a lot more for a lot less. Very impressed.

Just good food for a great price! It's clean and in a convenient location just off the 20.

Every small town across the south has at least one bbq joint and most aren't too bad. The recipe is predictable... good food and friendly service. Marie's is an exception. After 58 years and easily 100 bbq restaurants from Texas to the Carolinas and all across Alabama, I've never been to such an openly hostile place. It was getting late, we were hungry and hopped off the interstate seeing there was a bbq place at the exit. The lights were on, open signs were blinking so we walked in. The staff glared and said nothing as we went to the counter. A young lady asked for our order and we said we needed a minute to look over the menu and she replied that we should hurry because they close in three minutes. We ordered to go saying we'd eat in the car. There was no attempt at being polite even after adding a generous tip to the credit car receipt. They bagged the food and literally dropped it on the counter and were visibly irritated when I reminded they hadn't gotten us our drinks. So the service sucks but what about the food? The pork sandwich was good but had hardly any sauce. The meat had a good flavor but some sauce would have been welcome. The potato salad desperately needed seasoning. The potatoes were undercooked and just needed some love. As part of a bbq club, we're always on the lookout for new places for our 50ish members to travel to. Needless to say, we're not bringing our members here.

After being cooped up at the house for multiple weeks without the ability to go anywhere, we decided to pack up the family and go on a short road trip to the Talladega Scenic Byway. Our hope was to find a local restaurant somewhere on the trail and pick up lunch. But without a great way to map it out and lack of... anything on this highway, we weren't really sure where to turn. I figured out on Yelp a place that was close and it ended up being Marie's. With everything going on, the dining area was closed. But they were doing orders through the window. If you are waiting, be sure and call to place your order to make it go faster. But as soon as we pulled behind a car and got ready to call, we were able to pull right up. The lady at the window was INCREDIBLY nice. She told me I could wait at the window until someone pulled up behind. So we pulled into a parking place very close to the door. My wife and I both got a pork plate and decided to split four sides. My wife loved the fried green tomatoes and the okra best. And I loved the fries and onion rings the best. All were really good. I am not a huge fan of chipped pork. But I thought it was good. We got the traditional sauce and they added the perfect amount to taste the BBQ, but add enough flavor to the sauce. The kids ate ALL of the chicken fingers and fries they were given... so I can't give personal experience on that. But obviously they like it. It is not the best BBQ I have ever had. But the overall meal, especially for being takeout, was overall really good.

If this review was just about the pie, it would receive a 5-star. Unfortunately though, I had to count the BBQ too. Marie's is in the small town of Berlin off I-20 past Oxford-Anniston and before you get to Georgia. The restaurant is very clean and looks like a log cabin. I read the Yelp reviews and seems like the pork was spoken more highly of so I went with pork plate with beans and slaw and a piece of chocolate pie. The pork wasn't bad but not good either. It was chipped and not tough by any means, it just didn't really have much flavor to it and didn't mix well with the sauces. The sauces by themselves are pretty good. There is a spicy vinegar sauce similar to Dreamland sauce except with more bite to it. The sweet sauce is a ketchup base that has also has a subtle heat to it. But the pork doesn't soak up either sauce. It sits in the spicy one and the sweet one just sits on top of the pork. There are lots of sides to choose from but they charge an extra 26 cents for every side except beans, slaw, and fries. The beans were good but nothing stands out about them. The slaw was better as it was really creamy and sweet just the way I like it. The plate came with a piece of Texas Toast. Sweet tea was freshly brewed and really sweet. Now let's talk about the star of the meal...the chocolate pie! I'm not sure how it was made but it had a chocolate pie crust with chocolate chips on top of whatever chocolate congulation it was made of. It looked similar to a Hershey's chocolate cream pie but was 100x better. Marie's makes 4 different kind of pies and cakes homemade and makes the trip worth it especially at $1.50 a piece. Marie's is very affordable as my pork plate was $7.75 and the pie was $1.50 so it is easy to eat under $10. The pie was amazing but the BBQ was just ok at best. If I return, I will try a burger. I would have given it a 2 if it wasn't for the pie but the pie lifts it to a 3.

Great experience here with a large group. Food was tasty, service was friendly and fast, and they were very accommodating here for a large group. We are from out of town and met here with our family for a great meal. Lots of great BBQ options, spicy sauce, tenders, bbq, chicken salad, and other options. I got the chicken plate with fried okra and tater babies which all was delicious and came with toast. Worth the stop in if in the area. They also have a drive through.

Great food for a good price. Try the brunswick stew. And for the health conscious, the smoked/pit chicken is out of this world.

Convenient parking, very friendly staff. We were seated right away while at the same time another waiter got started with our drinks. It's a very homie, relaxed ambiance with a couple of TVs playing sports. Now to the best part. We shared a Rib Plate and a Pulled Pork Plate with a side of Mac & Cheese, Cole Slaw and Corn Bread. They are not lying when they say the ribs are fall-of-the-bone and seasoned to perfection ribs. 110% recommended. After we got all our orders, a staff member stopped by our table to ask if everything was good. I loved that. He then asked if we were trying their famous pie? We said no. He emphasized we must try it. So we did. WOW! It was gone in the blink of an eye. We had it with shrimp and totally recommend it. Everything was delicious and priced fairly. It was our first time in the area. I hope to be back soon. I apologize for the pictures. It was so good I forgot to take pictures before eating.

I did finally spot the smoker going outside, and saw the entrance obscured behind some trees. It is actually inside or what looks like an old dining hall or gym. The catfish I ordered was fried fresh and came out hot. The sides were lackluster IMO, with them not being bad, just nothing I would write home about. Greens did not have meat or flavor, outside of a hint of onion. Mac and cheese was baked and peppery, but just missing the rich cheesiness and gave buttered noodle vibes. There was an extra charge to have it packaged to-go, and a modest credit card convenience fee if you don't have cash. There appeared to be plenty of parking, although the designated areas for this restaurant wasn't clearly marked. Since the fish was good and I want to support a local black owned business, would probably come back and try the BBQ with either potato salad or just fries as a side. $2.50 for the red kool aid gets 5 stars

For those of you who don't read my reviews, only about one in five barbecue joints I go to make the cut. The last one that didn't make the cut, was that fast food place Smokin Ds in St Augustine Florida. Anyhow, let's get to Big J's. I'm parked across the street, which I park at semi often, and throughout the years, and have only been next door at the vape shop in the strip mall. I think the other times I've came by they were closed, but they weren't closed today and I kind of expected them to be. I wanted to have supper here last night, but I had to go endure tragedy at the Mexican restaurant in the same row. I noticed they were open today, so I mosied it over about 1:00 p.m. The place is really clean, it's a family run outfit, and they are ALL SO nice. So I wanted a brisket plate, but the nice young gentleman behind the counter told me that it wasn't ready and it would be ready in an hour, so I came back at 2:00 p.m.. I ordered brisket, collards and green beans. Again if you don't follow me, you don't know my culinary history and that on the smoke pit, but this place was just about as good as my own. My collards were fabulous, green beans were off the chain, my brisket was hot, tender and moist. So good! They went above and beyond, the young gentleman at the counter asked me if I was a truck driver after placing my order, which I am an O/O, and I got something free or got a discount, not too sure what it was but I got something! That means a lot, we spend weeks and months away from our families to bring ungrateful people the things they want, so it's a little gestures like that that really makes a difference to us. Well they definitely have a lifetime customer. I just have to make sure when I pull here that they're open. But I'll definitely be back! ***DISCLAIMER*** This pure, uncut, honest review is federally protected under Federal Law by way of Bill #EO14149.
