Finding a great bagel in San Diego can be a difficult mission. I've been here for years, and thought maybe it was time to give up the bagel ghost- but then I heard about marigold bagels. Came here on a Thursday morning since we heard it can get busy during the weekends. Got lucky with street parking too because people were at work. We walked in and there was no line. There were still lots of people having brunch and enjoying their bagels. I ordered the bacon, egg and cheese bagel on a jalapeno cheese bagel. There was plenty of egg, melty American cheese and a couple of pieces of bacon. It wasn't salty and the actual jalapeno on the bagel was a bit spicy. The bread itself was crunchy and soft, if that makes any sense. This was delicious and even better when you add some hot sauce to it. The hubs got the pizza bagel on a plain bagel and this wasn't so exciting. It had pepperoni and a good amount of it but we weren't too impressed with it. The Jersey Girl was good too. We appreciated the Taylor ham and finally glad we were able to try this. It's almost like spam but not as salty. This was on a plain bagel as well. I would get this again, as well as the bacon, egg and cheese bagel. We also ordered the lox and dill cream cheese to take home and ordered a jalapeno cheese, Asiago, plain, salt and two cinnamon raisin. All bagels need to be toasted. The cinnamon raisin was a nice treat, not too sweet but wishing it did have sugar on it. The lox and dill cream cheese was so so so so so good with all the other bagels we got. You can definitely taste and see all the lox and dill in the cream cheese. I would order all these again. It was just so so good. I ordered an everything, jalapeño cheese and a bialy with a tub of scallion cream cheese. The bagels were slightly crisp on the outside and soft and chewy on the inside. The cream cheese had good flavor too. Like with all fresh cream cheeses, I wish the cream cheese had more tang. It was very loud inside and so the gla taking my order misheard me and they gave me an everything bagel sandwich with jalapeño cheese cream cheese. They were very attentive and nice when I told them about the error and rectified it quickly and let me keep the sandwich bagel. Went for a Saturday morning breakfast and luckily breezed right through the line, because by the time we reached the counter, it was out the door and down the stairs. They offer a great variety of bagels and schmears, along with several signature sandwiches, or you can build your own. The wait after ordering was about 15 minutes, and everyone behind the counter was friendly, helpful, and welcoming. Last Thursday, my daughter, my husband, and myself decided to hit Marigold's bagels to celebrate my husband's birthday. He is a huge bagel fan. Construction was happening on the street right in front of the restaurant so we parked around the corner and walked through Madeline's patio to get there. That was a little awkward, but nothing that was Marigold's fault. Just know that parking is an issue even without construction. We placed our orders and found a seat. When our name was called, I picked up the order came back to the seat, divvied out everybody's order, open my box and noticed that mine was incorrect. Now the woman that rang me up was very nice. I tipped the highest on their iPad. And my order was wrong. This happens more often than not now and it makes me reluctant to want to tip if you're not going to fill the order correctly and then I have to wait for it to be fixed. They were nice about it, but it's so annoying and it's becoming a problem everywhere we go. The bagels were good and if I didn't need to drive there, I would probably go more often. I am surprised that they did not have coffee drinks like lattes, etc. just drip coffee. And juices. It seems like in this day and age every little restaurant has baristas as well. This place was going off on a Sunday! I had this on my list for a while and decided to swing by when I was in the area. Around 930am and line was pretty much out the door. This place is serious about their New York bagels it's pretty much just bagels; they serve some brew coffee and a fridge for drinks but the bagels are their sole focus. The long awaited bagel stop in north park came very close to the bagel shops in New York I'm used to. They have a plethora of bagels and shmears--personally I really enjoyed their seasonal ramp shmear (garlic/onion flavor). They are filled very well, great flavor and people behind the counter. I'm a bigggg bagel fan and these definitely hit the spot. I ordered the white fish on a jalapeño cheese bagel, and it was absolutely amazing! The white fish salad was creamy and decadent with melted cheddar and dill on top, and the bagel was so light and airy on the inside with the perfect crunch on the outside. Would've been extra fire with a side pickle or capers to cut through the rich fish, but overall a 10/10. The staff were friendly and gave great recommendations. I'd heard a lot about the long lines here and how some of the most popular bagels sell out if you don't get there early, so I finally decided to check it out for myself. To avoid the crowds, I went on a weekday and arrived around 11:30 a.m. Surprisingly, there was no line at all. The hardest part was deciding what to order, I changed my mind at least two or three times because everything looked so good . I eventually settled on the jalapeño cheddar bagel with the garlic spread, and it came with a pickle on the side. I'd heard this place serves some of the closest thing to New York-style bagels in San Diego, so I came in with pretty high expectations. Let me start by saying that I am not some bagel connoisseur so I wouldn't necessarily know the difference between an excellent or mediocre bagel. I do like a bagel from time to time and I have had east coast bagels before so I understand how delicious they can be but I don't go out of my way to seek a bagel. I heard that this spot had a lot of hype due to it selling out from a farmers market but wasn't in the area until recently. I came around noon and there was barely a wait. I didn't necessarily want a sandwich so me and my partner ended up ordering four bagels (two everything, one garlic and one bagel) and two different 2 oz spreads to try (lox/dill and jalapeño cheddar). There was a mixup in the ordering so the cashier was nice enough to provide us with an extra spread just cause (chive spread). Perhaps it was the time of the day but unfortunately all the bagels we tried were somewhat dry (both inside and outside). They explicitly write within the store that they don't have a toaster so unfortunately there wasn't a way to warm them up. In comparison to another hyped up east coast bagel shop that opened up just before them in San Diego (Popup Bagels in La Jolla) the difference in texture is noticeable as all the bagels there come out fresh. One note though: the Asiago bagel here has a whole layer of cheese versus a normal bagel shop that would just sprinkle the cheese for their Asiago bagels. Even with the lacking texture I could tell there was a super prominent cheese flavor that made it highly enjoyable. As for the spreads I did like that you could get multiple smaller options if you want some variety and they were all delicious. If I had come earlier in the day and the bagels were still fresh I probably would have enjoyed it more but unfortunately the texture made it feel like a bagel I could just get from the grocery store. The Asiago bagel makes me feel like they really do have something good going here but unfortunately this visit fell short for me. read more

As a former NYC resident, I was so happy to see the new wave of bagel spots in SD that are focusing on NY-style bagels. Marigold is one of those that I've been wanting to try even before their brick and mortar was established. We got the Crown Heights, a classic salmon, cream cheese, and the works and the BEC -- two items that would be hard to miss at any New York bagel spot. I was surprised that they were very adamant about the bagel for the salmon one not being toasted though so be prepared that this is more of a cold sandwich. Both items were delicious and fairly priced. The schmear is plenty and very pertinent to what makes it authentic. They have a variety of bagel and cream cheese flavors to choose from. Marigold Bagels about 3 weeks ago, opened shop on El Cajon Bl blocks away from swanky LaFayette Hotel and I had to try their claim of fame New York style bagels. Metered Street parking available. The interior dining area had a brick fireplace, seating and with pitched ceiling of exposed wood made the inside appear more spacious. Outdoor, indoor seating and pup friendly. Was greeted by friendly staff, placed my order for 3 bagels: Asiago, Sesame and Z'aatar. Hungry and Curious I also ordered a bagel sandwich called 'the crown heights with smoked salmon, cream cheese, all the veggie toppings and sliced in half. The wait wasn't bad, a staffer brought out the bagel sandwich with a smile and I did notice she had gloves, in fact she was the only staffer wearing gloves. The rest of the staff, while Kneading, Rolling the dough were also on their cell phones NOT wearing gloves, I have the photo receipt for proof! The staff needs to be more conscientious about their work being out in the public's eye where everyone notices everything especially cleanliness. After taking pics, I take a small bite of the sandwich and the bagel was cold and hard NOT toasted :( I asked if they could redo the sandwich and toast the bagel and they said they do not ever toast and they don't have a toaster :( I took the bagels and left, feeling disappointed and now more hungry. The following morning, I sliced the Asiago cheese bagel, toasted it and tried it with a little Kerrygold Irish butter and it tasted good and also tried the Z'aatar bagel, sliced and toasted with a schmear of Whole Foods cream cheese and it was also good. Would NOT say it's the best New York style bagel I've had because that bite of that cold hard sandwich made a bad impression, so Marigold Bagels needs to invest in a toaster asap. Marigold Bagels has taken over the space of a former North Park brewpub on El Cajon Blvd after being a viral hit at a local farmers market. When the doors first opened, the products sold out quickly to the point in which only pre-orders were being accepted, and no walk-in customers were allowed. The business had to temporarily shut down to recalibrate the production process. After reopening, the lines have still been long, and most days the place has closed early because the daily inventory had been emptied. I finally visited on a weekday mid-morning and found there were only two customers ahead of me. I even located an open curbside parking space a few doors down the street. In front of the suite were some tables for outdoor seating. The inside had maybe three tables, one of which was set in front of a fireplace. The kitchen preparation area was visible on the left when you walked in. A menu board hung on a wall to the right of the service counter. Next to the counter was a display case with all of the bagel types on display. What I liked was that you could buy any of the ten different bagels individually or as a bag of six or twelve. On a side note, no money was saved by purchasing a bag. Seven kinds of spreads were available, and they could also be bought as an 8 oz container. The sandwich section of the menu had four active choices as three other options were marked as unavailable. My order consisted of three bagels (Asiago, Onion, Sesame) and a container of Garlic Chive spread. The first one incurred a $0.50 surcharge because of the cheese crust. The local bagel game has really stepped up over the past year with several new entries into the SD market. What made this shop so good was the hand-rolled bagels that were chewy and soft. For the price, the size was reasonable, and the seasoning applied to the exterior was generous. The fact that you could order a bagel with cheese, salmon, salad, or veggies as toppings in a sandwich was a bonus. I enjoyed each of my three choices exactly how they were made. The creamy, herby spread was icing on the cake (bagel) so to say. Of the newer bagel businesses I have tried, Marigold gets my highest rating. read more

Definitely do not taste like "New York style" bagels. They're are more light and airy, still good but shouldn't be called what they're not. Service is horrible, wait times are ridiculous. We waited 40 minutes for 3 bagels, one toasted bagel and 2 bagel sandwiches. Before we got there we noticed a guy with his daughter who were waiting, we noticed him go up to the front and complain that he was also waiting 40 minutes for a bagel and not a bagel sandwich or anything complicated. And to top it off we saw them drop two people's orders on the floor because they call completed orders and leave them on a clear refrigerated case that has a rounded top so both peoples orders slid off and onto the dirty floor. We arrived to a line at 8am on a Sunday which moved fairly quickly for a bunch of people who hadn't looked at their menu before. We ordered a salt, everything, jalapeño cheddar, Asiago, and a sesame bagel. We purchase two small sides of cream cheese (garlic chive and scallion) to try while we dined there. The salt bagel with scallion was very good and the jalapeño with garlic chive was very tasty. After a month of trying to make it in, I finally made it...and they did not disappoint! There's a nice outside patio in the Blvd. to people-watch while you enjoy your bagel, otherwise, inside is nice and open with a few table and cute fireplace with a nice hearth. When it comes to a great bagel, yes the flavor is important, but to me it is all about the chew, and Marigolds' Bagels offer a wonderful unforgettable chewy texture. I picked up an Asiago and a sesame bagel, including a hot cup of black drip coffee. The bagels are $3.50 each but .50 cents more the cheddar jalapeno and the Asiago, as of 1/26. The Asiago bagel was delicious and had a great chew. I loved that they did not hold back on the asiago cheese and the way it crusted on the bagel. Finally open! Welcome to North Park Marigold Bagels!! After three attempts, I finally got to try Marigold. Came around 8am on Thursday morning and was able to order in less than 10 minutes. Ordered half dozen for $21 and based on the super nice cashier's recommendation, I got the garlic chive spread to go with it for $8. Everything is my go to bagel, but the Za'atar was something new and delicious that I tried. Bagel had great bite and chew outside with the right amount of soft inside. Today I was finally able to grab some during their grand opening at their physical space in North Park. The wait was about 2hrs and 20 minutes (waiting in line to receiving my order) and they were limiting to 2 bagels per person (at least by the time I made it to the front). They could have definitely taken more precautions to speed up the system, but it's also difficult to keep up with the demand created by social media hype. As for the bagels: overall, they are good bagels, but a few of them felt old/not fresh. I tried the Onion, Everything, Asiago, and Sesame bagels, as well as the Garlic Chive and Scallion cream cheeses. I would rate the bagels (from best to not as yum): Everything, Asiago, Sesame, Onion. The Everything included the sesame seeds + more so I think it is an automatic choice between those two. The Asiago had a solid cheesey flavor to it, which "cheese" bagels sometimes lack imo. Between the two choices of cream cheese I tried, the flavor differences felt very minimal, so either one will do. I will say, I wish the bagels had more cream cheese, especially the one I ordered with just cream cheese. One cool thing is that each bagel came with a small pickle on the side. The pickle was just okay, not pickley enough, but free alas. Bagel prices were reasonable overall, but the lox really up the price, a bit too much for the amount you get. The one thing I cannot get over was the grapefruit juice, which comes from a local farm. Yes the juice was good, NO the juice is not worth $7. Having seen the size prior to purchasing, I decided to go ahead and try it, so you wouldn't have to. The space is tiny but homey, and I'm sure it will become a North Park staple. Whenever we travel, we're on a mission to find a true New York-style bagel, and Marigold Bagels did not disappoint. We finally found that "East Coast" texture right here in San Diego! The bagels are exactly what you want: a crisp exterior, a dense, chewy inside, and that signature small hole. You can even watch them being hand-rolled in the shop, which explains the quality. My only minor gripe was that they were sold out of plain bagels (my usual gold standard) by the time we arrived. We tried the sea salt instead; while the texture was perfect, it was a bit too salty for my personal preference. Definitely coming back early next time to snag a plain one! read more

We got here bright and early and there was only two other people in line. We ordered the lox on a jalapeno cheese bagel. We added veggies and the heirloom tomato. We also got an everything bagel with white fish. The white fish was overpowering and salty. We weren't sure if the bagel was overly salty or the white fish but I wouldn't recommend. It was super mushy and needed something like onions or capers to cut the fishiness. The lox was okay but the veggies made the bagel soggy. Overall these are okay bagels. Great compared to most bagels you will find in San Diego but does not live up to the hype. read more

I came here on a Saturday around 9:30 AM and the line was already out the door. I waited about 15 minutes to order and another 5 minutes for my food. [[HIGHLIGHT]]There are a few seats outside and some tables inside, but it's a pretty small space.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I ordered the BEC bagel on a garlic bagel. It was just okay and very messy. It definitely wasn't a New York-style bagel and didn't have any real wow factor. Overall, it tasted more like a fast-food breakfast sandwich than something special. I asked for the order to be for here, but it was made to go. The staff members were super sweet though, and they even had dog treats at the counter for pups, which was a nice touch. Parking is street parking only, which can be a bit tricky. Overall, there were just too many inconveniences and wait time for something that wasn't particularly special. Best plain bagel I've had in San Diego. It's doughy and chewy with the right amount of density. I really could have eating the plain bagel as plain as can be and be happy with that. Looks like I know what I'm ordering next visit - bagel and basic cream cheese. ITALIAN LEMONADE - came in a 1/2 pint super tiny container made locally at a farm in Center Valley. This was a mix of blood orange and lemonade. tasty but felt I needed a big glass of water afterwards. I've followed the Marigold craze for a while now. As a frequent visitors to the Civita Park Farmer's Market, it's almost impossible to not remember the long lines for these bagels. The line would be down the entire sidewalk before the official opening time of the Farmer's Market. I finally thought I got lucky only to realize that Marigold Bagels was no longer at the Farmer's Market and was replaced by a different bagel stand. Still good, but totally duped! After endless failed attempts to get Marigold Bagels at the Civita Park Farmer's Market, I finally got a chance to try them at their weekend Ponyboy Pop-Up/Pick-Up. Although these are no longer taking place as they prepare for their storefront opening, it was a great chance to finally try the bagels. I got the egg salad sandwich and my husband got the bacon, egg and cheese that were both on sesame bagels. These bagels are CHEWY! The chew was undeniable! They weren't super toasty in the sandwich, so I'm curious to try them on their own! Great bagels that I'm excited to try more of! read more

not fantastic but not bad either. $6 for cream cheese scallion, $10 for bacon egg cheese, $15 for novalox i believe. semi crispy outside but inside very bready.. to the point it was too chewy for me. just average is best way to describe it.
