Partial view of the suite front
Emmett T.

It seems that many of my friends had tried this bagel shop in Point Loma over the years so I made a recent visit near their closing time. P.L. Bagels has a much smaller footprint than I had anticipated as the suite couldn't compare to the bigger national chains. About a half dozen small tables were available for inside seating, but most customers were taking their food to go. The business does have a cash only policy. They even installed a small ATM in a corner of the room if you're in a pinch for greenbacks. A menu board was posted on the wall behind the service counter. I counted 14 types of bagels on display in the cases to the right of the register. Seven bagel sandwiches were offered. I selected a Hot Pastrami on an egg bagel which came with a choice of cheese (provolone was my pick). The sandwich was dressed with lettuce, tomato, red onion, yellow mustard, mayo, and pickle. I declined the onion and mayo for mine. Even though there were just two people ahead of me with small orders, it took a long time for my sandwich to be assembled. It didn't seem like they were short staffed, but rather the processes were inefficient. I can only imagine the wait time when there are more customers in the queue. As for the product, the bagel itself was dense and soft. I would give that four stars by itself, however what downgraded my experience was the slow service and lack of attention to detail. I was told the mustard would be provided on the side, but it didn't occur as both that and the pickle were missing when I received a takeout container.

My favorite everything bagels and 1 onion bagel

First time here and it did not disappoint. The staff were great. Bagels and the cream cheeses were event better. The new go to is the everything bagel with half veggie and half jalapeño cream cheese spread.

Visiting a friend in the Point Loma, thus suggested to stop at this establishment for some bagels! Other options in area included Einstein bagels, but I wanted to support a local business! Parking can sometimes be challenging when visiting this establishment! There is a small parking lot that is shared with other businesses. There is also some street parking in the area. My golden spot is next to the library where I can grab a fifteen parking spot to run in and grab some bagels! Unfortunately, this morning I was concerned that I would exceed my 15 minutes as the bagel ordering process was taking awhile! There was only two people in front of me, but on a Saturday everybody was getting a bundle or a speciality sandwich! By the time I ordered there was at least 6 people behind me. I think it took me over 20 minutes to get my three bagel spread sandwiches! On a Saturday morning the bagels were fresh! For three bagel spread sandwiches the bill was about 15 dollars! The salmon spread bagel is over $6.50. A bit pricey but did come with tomatoes and onions. The tomato was not really red! And note the onions are strong! Sandwich was good but not great! Get there early for choice bagels! There is some seating inside! The ambiance is not great so best to take your food to go! The staff is not super friendly! They are busy taking and making orders! The friendliest person was the lady taking orders!

Bacon, egg, and cheese breakfast sandwich on an everything bagel

This is a nice little bagel shop to stop in. They only accept cash and their breakfast bagel sandwiches don't come with cream cheese so I recommend bringing cash and ask to add cream cheese. The service was nice. They could use an update on their interior, menu, and processes.

Long line on a Sunday morning but the bagels are very fresh. Some seating inside.

I don't know that I would swear to it, but I'm going to go way out on a limb and guess that the "P. L." in the name stands for "Point Loma." It took me far longer than it should have to figure this out, even assuming I'm right. CASH ONLY. CASH ONLY. CASH ONLY. Why Yelp won't post a dollar sign or some symbol at the top of cash only businesses will keep me up nights the rest of my life. I've only provided free content to Yelp for a third of my life but whatever. It seems to be a family-run business and the line was well out the door on a Sunday morning. They do not necessarily have a zillion different types or styles of bagels but they have all the standards. The bagels are on the larger side and are very fresh. They also offer some bagel sandwiches and you can buy cream cheese by the tub. Parking is horrific in the little lot but there is a ton of parking in the Stumpy's parking lot next door, although parking there probably violates some rules. You do you. Very fresh bagels here and the prices are reasonable. Just bring cash and I hope you are not in a hurry.

Everything bagel with cream cheese

Dropped in on a Friday morning around 9am. Probably 3.5 stars, but I'm giving 4 because the price is only $3 for a fresh bagel with ample cream cheese! The staff is friendly, service is quick, and did I mention they don't short you on the cream cheese? No frills experience with affordable prices, plenty of seating, and a nightmarish parking lot. My bagel was soft but not under toasted, chewy but not doughy, and perfectly seasoned. Cash only. Great lil shop!

(FYI cash only) Simple shop with a simple purpose. Feed the people what they want: bagels. I went on a weekday morning. There was a steady flow of customers but the wait was minimal. My everything bagel with cream cheese came out to $3 and was in my hands within 5 min. Small parking lot but there's plenty of neighborhood street parking close by.

This bagel shop is a hidden gem in San Diego. It's a small family owned business. They have fresh bagels. They close at 1:00 PM. They ran out of their bagels very fast. The place is located in a tiny plaza. There are limited parking spaces shared with other businesses in the same plaza, but it was very easy for us to find a spot. The place itself is very clean and simple. They have indoor seating. All the employees were very nice and friendly. The service was fast. We chose: -Half a dozen of Bagel - Salmon Spread with red onion and tomato in a plain bagel. The salmon spread Bagel was flavorful and delicious. The bagels had perfect chewy texture and was fresh. They accept cash only. For sure I will be back in my next visit to San Diego

The shop is so cute and has a good amount of seating around it. I particularly enjoyed the area near the pick-up area where you can sit and eat and had a nice view of the boats and water. When we arrived, we were greeted by Riley who I gave my full faith in for my order. She chose my drink (Cinna-Bee) and my bagel (Serrano, Habanero & Jack Cheese Bagel with Shallot & Chive Cream Cheese). Truly phenomenal. Both were sooo good. The bagel had the perfect amount of spice to it and looked at how decked on the cream cheese was. Really doesn't get better than this. Riley was so incredibly sweet in taking our order and giving us recommendations on what's good and what was a must try. We ordered a San Dieggo sando and just look at how it looked. The taste was even better than the picture. Sabrina gave us our order (I believe she made the Sando and Bagel) and was super nice! Honestly the service here was such a wonderful cherry on top for the already fantastic foods. Really awesome shop to dine at and I honestly will be coming back more often. I know I can't be the only one because I heard it loud and clear the moment I read it. I always stop by this place since I discovered it last year when I visited Seaport Village. The last time I was here, I was barely getting introduced to coffee and had my usual (iced vanilla latte with oat milk) but I like to try something on the menu when I find a cute little place while exploring. I'm glad I stuck to that because Basic Sitch was DELICIOUS, I wish I had gotten a medium. Props to the guy at the register because I kept going back and forth attempting to order but while waiting for family to join me and trying to get my smaller kiddos to calm down, I was everywhere and he was very patient once I finally went up to order. He was friendly and polite. Perfect weather to enjoy an iced coffee for the long drive back home.

Chicken katsu sando 5/5: my favorite. I love the spicy mustardy sauce not sure if it's in the actual brown katsu sauce or separate mustard. My bf didnt like it but i loved it! Chicken also juicy and soft. The milk bread is so fluffy and lil sweet and perfect pairing. We walked into a modern space with a clean, inviting layout that makes it easy to stop by for a quick pastry or pick up a few things to share. The selection is one of the biggest draws, with everything from classic Japanese breads to savory items that make it feel like more than just a dessert stop. The display cases are well organized, and the visual appeal of the baked goods adds to the experience before you even order. The pastries are where ASA Bakery really stands out. The curry pan is one of the highlights, with a crisp exterior and a savory filling that makes it a satisfying snack rather than just a bakery item. The croissants are also worth trying, especially the matcha croissant, which has a buttery flaky texture with a matcha filling that adds a slightly earthy flavor without becoming overly sweet. The matcha comes through clearly, and the croissant itself is well laminated, with the right amount of crispness on the outside and a soft, airy interior. The melon pan is another classic option that delivers the soft bread interior and lightly sweet cookie-like topping that makes it a staple in Japanese bakeries, staying true to the traditional version while feeling freshly made. The savory menu adds another reason to visit, especially the katsu sandos. The cutlet sandwiches have a nice balance between the crispy fried filling and the soft bread, making them one of the more memorable items on the menu. The bread stays soft and pillowy, and the cutlet holds its crunch even against the sauce, which is a detail that often gets overlooked. Items like the hojicha latte and other drinks pair naturally with the pastries, making ASA Bakery feel like a place where you can sit down and enjoy a full café break rather than just grab something quickly. The drink menu is thoughtfully curated and complements the baked goods without competing for attention. Service is friendly and the bakery has a welcoming atmosphere, although popular items can sell out depending on when you visit. The staff are knowledgeable about the offerings and happy to guide you through the selection, which is helpful given the range of choices. The shop gets busy, especially during peak hours, so going earlier gives you the best chance to see the full selection. The pace of the visit stays comfortable even when the line forms, and the team handles the flow efficiently. ASA Bakery is a great spot for anyone looking for Japanese-style baked goods with a mix of sweet and savory options. The combination of quality pastries, unique flavors, and a comfortable café setting makes it a place worth returning to, whether you are picking up a quick snack or settling in for a longer break. It delivers on both the familiar classics and the more creative offerings, leaving you with the sense that you have found a bakery that takes its craft seriously.

I got the island boi sandwich on a sesame bagel, a maple donut, a strawberry shorty (seasonal), and some ube donut holes. Service was very transactional, so there was nothing standout but also nothing bad to say. The store is in North park, so naturally parking is a nightmare, but since I ordered ahead, I just used one of the 15 min parking spots out front. I was in and out so I didn't stop to really check out the shops decor either. The good: the breakfast sandwich was phenomenal, the crusted spam and garlic chili sauce paired so well with the rest of the flavors. The strawberry shortcake donut, which was filled with a strawberry "cheesecake" filling was very good as well. The donut dough was light and airy, and there was a generous amount of filling. The ehh: I wasn't super impressed with the maple donut, it may just be because most of their classic donuts are vegan, but the texture was strangely chewy to me, and the maple glaze just didn't hit. The donut holes just tasted like sugar coated donuts, I didn't taste any hint of ube/taro, not to mention they are way smaller than the average donut holes (4 for $1). Overall, I highly recommend the breakfast sandwiches, I definitely want to try some of the other specialty ones. As for the donuts themselves, I just don't think the classic donuts are to my taste. I would like to try another specialty one and update eventually.
