I got to check out Sourdough and Moore at the Mission Valley farmers market and even had the opportunity to meet David Moore! He was running their bread tent, and his counterpart was running their bagel tent. Both were so sweet,, and when I asked about their story, they couldn't help but get excited and want to share about their journey. As for the goodies, we ended up trying their ube sourdough bagel (yes! They use REAL ube) and rosemary garlic sourdough bread. Ube sourdough bagel - I wish I could capture this scent in a candle. It was surprisingly fragrant with those coconut, vanilla notes but not overpowering. Rosemary garlic sourdough loaf - I mean how can you go wrong with this combo. I remember first trying Sourdough & Moore at the Civita Farmers Market. They stood out because they make small, mini sized sourdough loves. For a small household, these are absolutely perfect and the best way to get your bread fix without knowing you're going to waste half the loaf. I'm so glad they transitioned to a brick and mortar location in OB that's popping! They still serve up their classic sourdough loaves in all sizes. Met a friend here to catch up and was pleasantly surprised there wasn't a massive line after reading all the reviews. Service wasn't the best not much of a warm welcome. The cashier was pretty much going through the motions. I ordered the breakfast tile. I thought they would have warmed it up when I ordered it or even offered to warm it up but nope just shoved it in the bag and moved on to the next person. Kinda disappointing. The tile itself was good. I enjoyed the sweet and saltiness of the ingredients. The sharp cheddar was a nice addition, it would have been nice melted a bit. OK second visit to this brick & mortar store today. They open at 7 AM, we got there at 6:55 AM and there was already a line of people! That's how you know when something is truly legit. Getting here early is definitely worth it. They had such a huge variety of pastries and breads, so much more than on my last visit. I still think it's crazy that they were running out of everything before noon but I guess now I see why, when they've already got a line at the door before they open. We just got a couple of standard sourdough flavors, but the variety of pastries available blew my mind. I'm trying to cut out simple sugar for the next couple weeks, but as soon as I am eating pastries again, I will be there at the crack of dawn. Literally the best sourdough bread I've had in San Diego. You have to order the Rosemary Lemon Zest sourdough loaf; it goes with everything. My other favorite is the Dark Chocolate Walnut loaf. Warm it up and put some peanut butter and/or banana on it; you'll thank me later. The coffee is not great, but the bread and pastries are so good that it doesn't matter. I read Sourdough & Moore had a 100 year old starter and was interested in tasting it.  There is a good variety of baked items to choose from. Rosemary Lemon Zest Sourdough Bread had an interesting combination of flavors.  I liked the outer crust which was harder than Hawaiian bread but not as hard as a baguette.  It contrasted with the silky insides.  A really good bread. Butter croissant had a thin crunchy outer layer and silky smooth inside.  Loved the buttery flavor. Baguette was quite different than the French baguettes I'm use to.  The crust didn't have a crunchy layer and the flavor was light sourdough.  Very tasty. Sea salt bagel is the first sourdough bagel I've had.  Texture was dense like other bagels I've tried.  The sourdough flavor with the light sea salt combined to result in one of the best bagels I've had.  This is my favorite treat here so far. Small round sourdough had the same delicious flavor as the baguette.  I do prefer the crust of the baguette. Staff was nice and efficient. In the old days my mom and brother would take me fishing off the Ocean Beach Pier a couple blocks away.  Sadly the pier is closed and scheduled for replacement.  Would have been great if Sourdough & Moore was around back then. read more

I first heard about this place from a few fellow Yelp Elite foodies, and after seeing it pop up so many times in my feed, I had to add it to my list. I also knew I didn't want to deal with the weekend crowds, so I planned my visit for early on a weekday to avoid the lines and have a better chance of getting everything before it sold out. It's a small bakery with a few indoor tables and several high-top seats overlooking the OB streets. There are also a handful of parking spots right out front, which was really convenient. When I arrived, there were only two people ahead of me, which made me even happier that I skipped the weekend rush. I was completely overwhelmed by all the pastries, they all looked delicious! After way too much debating, I settled on the cinnamon roll and the almond croissant to take home, although the guava roll would have been my third choice I also loved that they sell half loaves of bread, which is such a thoughtful option for smaller households. Both the cinnamon roll and the almond croissant were really good, fresh, and clearly well made. I can definitely see why this place is so popular. That said, while I enjoyed both, they didn't quite become instant favorites for me personally. I completely understand the hype that is Sourdough & Moore. Before my AM workout, I came to Sourdough & Moore, I had seen that there were really long lines but I was actually really lucky. The cafe just opened and I was probably within the first 10 people in the cafe. I was a little taken a back on the costs, especially in OB but I thought it was worth it. I ended up ordering the original cinnamon roll, chocolate babka and ham and cheese croissant, my total was a little over $30 but was it worth it yes. My husband and I didn't get to try the pastries until after I got back from the gym and it was the perfect little morning treat. The ham and cheese croissant was perfectly flaky and butter so good, the chocolate babka was tender and not too sweet, I really appreciate that. The star was definitely the cinnamon roll, my husband is the center kind of guy and I a definitely the outer kinda girl so it was really easy to share. I definitely want to try the carrot cake version, I love carrot cake but their OG cinnamon roll is the best I have ever had! I found this spot on Instagram and, as a big sourdough lover (and with a husband who will never say no to a cinnamon roll), we decided to check it out on a Sunday morning. I had read that their cinnamon rolls sell out fast, so we got there around 8:30am. There was already a line, but it moved pretty quickly--we waited about 15 minutes or so. The space itself is cozy with limited seating. It seems like most people grab their food to go, but we lucked out and snagged a table. We ordered the cinnamon roll (of course), an apple cider donut, and an everything bagel sandwich with egg and bacon. We also grabbed a sprouted spelt sourdough loaf to take home. First thing to note: everything here is BIG. The cinnamon roll was massive (and priced accordingly at $11). My husband loved it, and while I enjoyed a few bites, it was a bit too sweet for me personally. The everything bagel itself was really good--nice chew, soft and slightly gooey inside--but the sandwich had very little bacon. At $14, it didn't feel worth it. I'd rather just grab their $4 bagels and make my own sandwich at home. The apple cider donut was just okay. Again, a bit too sweet for my taste, and the texture leaned slightly wet rather than fluffy. Overall, if you like large, indulgent pastries, this place will probably hit the spot. I personally prefer smaller portions at a lower price point since I rarely finish pastries this big. As a sourdough fan I'm always looking for a great loaf- brick n mortar is a new addition to the Ocean Beach main drag on Newport Ave. they also participate in the farmers markets Wednesday and at Civita park/Mission Valley/Saturday. Been wanting to try their cinnamon rolls and bread so we grabbed that and a maple pecan morning bun. Though I was advised by their social media person to eat the cinnamon roll warmed up- it didn't happen. Still wildly delicious, thankfully we have half left to try heated. Street parking only, very difficult to find as they are close to the beach. Line is usually out the door. If you are not in line when they open do not expect to be able to get items you want. They were out of almost everything before 11am. The cinnamon rolls are gone very, very quickly. I tried a few times to get them and they were always sold out. Many people waiting in line left after finding out pretty much everything was sold out. They have a very small amount of seating inside and it gets very loud so I would recommend a grab and go instead as you'll be jostled by all the people. Tried: Plain sourdough loaf $10 - it was really hard on the bottom. They did not offer to slice it, so I am not sure if they do that. Difficult to slice yourself. You need to eat within a day or two or it goes bad if you do not put it in the fridge. I have had better sourdough bread from other shops in San Diego. I would recommend to go to their farmers market shops as they always have lots of things available. Update: a few tries later and I was able to get their cinnamon roll. It is massive. Share with others. Ask for it warmed up. Served in box, no silverware, doesn't look like they offer 'for here' plates. Grab plastic utensils yourself above the trash can. Very sadly, they had already sold out of the cinnamon rolls by the time i arrived at 9:45am! I was crestfallen. The very kind and warm-hearted worker at the counter shared with me that they sell out of the cinnamon rolls every day by 830 or nine. So, I pass that along to you, dear Reader, with the hope to help you avert the sadness I felt in that moment. But all was not lost! They still had a Dulce de Leche morning bun and a pistachio croissant! I purchased those, and - while not a cinnamon roll (my most favored pastry) - they were delicious! The pastry is both is crispy and flaky, yet inside there is just the right amount of chewiness as well. The dulce de leche bun is downright GOOEY inside! Mmmmmm! The pistachio croissant was incredibly rich, with a touch of honey mixed with the pistachio paste. It hinted at baklava while clearly retaining its identity as a croissant. It was amazing. This shop is very small, the line often goes out the door but it goes very fast! I came around 10 am on a Saturday and they still had plenty of inventory. Everything here looks amazing. There is minimal seating inside and none outside. This place would not be good for big groups. All the bread they had to offer was so beautiful and looked so delicious! They even had one gluten free option which was their chocolate chip banana bread slice. It was very moist and flavorful, you almost couldn't tell it was gluten free. I also got the butter croissant, spicy jalapeno habanero cheddar sourdough bread loaf, and the cinnamon roll. The butter croissant was so fluffy and had an amazing flavor. I was a sourdough croissant but it didn't have a sour flavor, it was nice and buttery and the flavor of the bread was so good. The spicy jalapeño habanero was spicier than expected, but again the flavor of the bread was amazing and it was so soft. I really want to go back and try all of the different flavors because I was blown away with how good it was. Lastly, the cinnamon roll was very sweet but delicious! Sourdough & Moore is an independent bakery that opened in the heart of the OB neighborhood across from Target. Parking on Newport Ave can be hit or miss depending on the time of the day. I ended up curbside next to the library and walked over from about a block away. I believe the suite they took over had been empty for at least a year. Inside seating was limited to a couple of small round tables and two countertops, one along a wall and one next to the front windows. By the time I arrived, a significant portion of the daily inventory had already been sold as evident by the empty shelves and less than full display cases next to the service counter. A menu board hung on the wall behind the counter. Tape was marked across the coffee offerings because their machine was out of order. While I was in line, a customer ahead of me purchased the last remaining Kougin Amman which was unfortunate. I settled on a Paris Classic Sandwich and a White Chocolate Blueberry Danish. The sandwich was made with ham, cheese, and a pat of cold butter in between a sourdough baguette. The addition of butter was a classic French touch which was why the product had such a name. It provided a creamy texture to the sandwich. The danish was a laminated pastry finished with powdered sugar on top. The blueberries were large, and the white chocolate made it a very sweet treat. Not an overly sweet cinnamon roll had nice flavor balance. The only thing was it was a little on the dry side, but I also went closer to noon, so I'm guessing the early birds probably get the softer buns straight out the morning batch. And while I totally understand why there's a line and what the hype is about! The quality of their sourdough along with other pastries and bakery items is on match. First off they have a variety of pastry items from croissants to cookies to traditional croissants and everything in between, from fancy cinnamon rolls donuts, breakfast croissants, and of course bagels and sourdough! They also offer smaller size sourdough breads which is really great if you want to try different flavors. I have so far I've tried the Rosemary and lemon which has tasted amazing . I have also bought the jalapeno and cheddar which I am excited to try. Highly recommend this place if you're looking for some good quality sourdough and pastries. What's disconcerting, is none of the staff members wore gloves. Even though some used utensils to handle most items, while other staffers did touch some loaves with their bare hands, which to me was not okay...I made sure I didn't purchase the foods touched with bare hands. Would be better if All the staffers wore gloves. The staff are nice, helpful but don't seem to work efficiently as the long line outside moved super slow. As some customers were walking out of the shop, their comments were overheard, saying it wasn't worth the 45 minutes wait. Went back today for the second time and once again left impressed. The first time around I tried a chocolate chip cookie, an apple cider donut, a loaf of sourdough, and a plain bagel with their chive cream cheese. Every single thing was great. This time I went in planning to just grab bagels and somehow walked out with another chocolate chip cookie and a pistachio croissant. No regrets. I always overdo it, whatever. Everyone kept talking about the jamon beurre (the Paris sandwich, 15 bucks), but honestly the baguette and the croissant were the best things I had. Focaccia was just okay--maybe too late in the morning, who knows. The baguette had that nice chew, a little dense inside but in a good way, still moist and flavorful. They have mini loaves (perfect for a little sourdough sampler party), large loaves once you find a favorite, and bagels and pastries galore. The star of the day is the Asiago pepper bagel! It is cheesy savory with a kick and so craveable! Try to get a couple before they sellout! The service is so friendly and attentive. The bakery has a European feel to it! Seats inside and outside. You can order online for pickup also! I usually get their bread at the Farmers Market and I am happy to see their storefront. They have additional bakery items so I have tried their almond croissants and cinnamon rolls. They were good but it seems best if I toast them more in the oven at home to make it more baked inside and toasty outside. read more
