I've bought pita chips and dip from Marin Gourmet in the past. And when I was at the San Rafael Farmer's Market last Thursday, I tried a sample and then picked up a container of eggplant dip. I opened the dip about 5 days later and had a few scoops, yum. But when I shared some with my bf on the 6th day, the dip was sour and fizzy. "I don't like that at all," said my bf. I discovered Marin Gourmet empanadas at the Davis Farmers Market and couldn't resist giving it a try since empanadas are one of my favorite foods. These empanadas come in different globally-inspired flavors: the Moroccan empanada is filled with chicken and pomegranate; the Scottish has lamb, potato, and mushroom; and the Guatemalan has lemon chicken (there are also Greek, Italian, and Persian varieties). I tried the Moroccan empanada, which came with a side of fried rice, blanched vegetables, and cilantro sauce. The empanada was delicious - the shredded chicken filling was tender, juicy, and tangy. The cilantro sauce was refreshing and enhanced the chicken's flavor. I was not a fan of the fried rice and vegetables, which were bland and didn't pair well with the empanada. Next time, I'd order a la carte to try a variety of empanada flavors. read more

What really gave these a boost were the two provided sauces, the green being tangy with a bite and the black one that was tame and reminded me of olive paste. Kudos to them for their generosity in giving one of each sauce for each pastry. The young lady who helped me was learning how to use the payment device so another lady assisted. As I thanked them for helping me, the second lady generously gave me a lemon hummus which I gifted to a hummus fan friend. I like trying empanada's so when we visited Pleasanton farmers market and saw their tent decided to stop by. The empanada itself was just meh, the portion is big but not keen on the taste. The pesto sauce (I think it's pesto, can't ask might get more eye rolling) that came with it was good. It was not worth putting up with the RUDE behavior of the guy working at the farmer's market on June 1st. It was our first time and asked about one of the empanada and his snippy response was "You're looking at it" with attitude. Uuhhmm there's a bunch of empanada in front of me. Don't even bother asking for flavors he hates that too, he'll roll his eyes and tell you to look at the sign. Make sure you see the sign on the side even if it's blocked by something or someone. After looking at the sign make sure you got it memorized. If you're having a bad day stay home. The empanada is not worth the hassle. Keep walking, there's the bakery at the other end who's staff were all friendly. The gentleman selling potato chips was amazing and the fruit vendors. BIG SKIP! read more

UPDATE: I was happy to finally get a response back even after a few months, because we really do like this place a lot. It has always been one of the must stops every Saturday at the Ferry Building. Marin Gourmet was able to make the wrong a right and gave us a refund for being overcharged $200. They also advised they are looking to revamp their customer service in general which is great. People make mistakes, but it was nice that they were to get back to us and fix it. We will be back this weekend to enjoy their great hummus and pita chips. read more

Lots of great options here but the chimichurri and aubergine eggplant dip are my top two favorite things! I look forward to the farmer's market at the Ferry Building so I can get a taste of that dleicious chimichurri on the falafel bites. I've picked up goods from the gentleman at the Palo Alto farmer's market a couple of times now and my experience has been great each time. The man is very patient and friendly. He let us know his recommendations as it was our first time so we tried 2 of the empanadas (lemon chicken and probably a braised beef) as they looked perfect. He even gave us some artichoke samplers spreads to accompany our empanadas and we thought the empanadas were decent but better with the spread. My second time was today and I decided to try the wrap as I didn't recall seeing it this time around. I'm pretty sure it is a vegetarian wrap with feta cheese, tomatoes, garbanzo beans, and more but don't hold it against me for not recalling all the ingredients. I toasted it up for about 10 minutes in my toaster oven and this is now my favorite item to order if I'm in the area again. The crispy textured wrap with the seasoned filling had me wish I had ordered a second one to save as a second meal. Solid food with friendly service makes this place one to support if you get the chance. read more

Marin Gourmet took a break from the Lakeshore Farmers' Market for a month and my Farmers' Market experience was less than satisfying without their presence. While they were gone, I resorted to buying their falafel from Berkeley Bowl but it was sub par compared to me buying the falafel at the Farmers' market. So, I was VERY happy to see their return 2 weeks ago. They no longer sell falafel individually but you can buy them in packs of 3, 5 and 8. The packs come with hummus. I had an Israeli friend (OM) with me who tasted the falafel and said it didn't taste like "real" falafel but I was happy with the taste. Purchased a 5 pack and a container of the roasted eggplant "Aubergine" spread - now THAT my friend enjoyed immensely. I have to admit the week before, I tasted the falafel and it was dry so I didn't buy, but yesterday's falafel was moist and chewy. Sitting in the sun, listening to music, eating falafel and eggplant - that is a Saturday routine worth maintaining. The take away is - always TRY the falafel before buying and if you like the sample, buy the falafel. read more

The tub of delicious Aubergine I bought at a Farmer's Market was at least one-third air! I bought the larger tub (2 inches high) because it was so great, but when I opened it I was surprised to see it was not only just two-thirds full, but very air-whipped and light compared to other eggplant spreads. I still love the taste, but it should be sold much cheaper unless they leave out some of the air-whipping and fill it to the top. I think everyone should get the larger size for the price of the small size. I am reluctant to try their other products in case they are the same. read more

If you are in the Ferry Plaza Farmer's Market in San Francisco on a Saturday you must stop by the Marin Gourmet booth. This all vegetarian food is to die for! The aubergine, babaganoush, and hummus are great. Their artichoke dip, olive tapenade, and fire roasted red pepper and walnut dip are unbelievable! A must try! Hummus.... everybody has their favorite-- Right? We've tried them all, but the hummus we buy most frequently and that we all agree is the best tasting is made by Marin Gourmet. It's the only hummus we don't have to doctor up with extra spices or lemon juice or olive oil. The taste is delicious and always consistent. They make several different kinds of hummus... plain of course, spicy hummus (OMG!!-sooo good!!), caper hummus (really, really yummy!!!) the lemon is great too. Some of the other incredibly good dishes they make are falafels, a fantastic aubergine spread, baba ghanoush, and their olive walnut tapenade is TDF!!!!!!!!! I bought a Tabouli salad from the Marin Gourmet stand at the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market today 4/6/10 about 1/2 hour ago. It is abosolutely HORRIBLE. There is so much salt that it is inedible, which is a lot to say because I am a salt lover - tastes like pickel juice with salt added. I am very disappointed. I should have stuck with their hummas. I purchased the 13 pack of falafels, a 6oz tub of the Affi's Aubergine (roasted eggplant) spread, a 6oz tub of the caper hummus, and tried the rice/potato fritters at the Pleasanton, Ca Farmer's Market. They were delicious. The two women working the booth were knowledgeable and we talked about how hard it would be to work at Marin Gourmet and still keep the weight off. They had interest in juicing, and I recommended the masticating Omega 8003 model juicer from Harvest Essentials that I use to great satisfaction. It is fun to talk about eating healthy with people that care about what they put into their systems, and promote good food for their clients. I will be going back for more. read more
