Moroccan empanada with side of fried rice and vegetables
    Alex M.

I discovered Marin Gourmet empanadas at the Davis Farmers Market and couldn't resist giving it a try since empanadas are one of my favorite foods. These empanadas come in different globally-inspired flavors: the Moroccan empanada is filled with chicken and pomegranate; the Scottish has lamb, potato, and mushroom; and the Guatemalan has lemon chicken (there are also Greek, Italian, and Persian varieties). I tried the Moroccan empanada, which came with a side of fried rice, blanched vegetables, and cilantro sauce. The empanada was delicious - the shredded chicken filling was tender, juicy, and tangy. The cilantro sauce was refreshing and enhanced the chicken's flavor. I was not a fan of the fried rice and vegetables, which were bland and didn't pair well with the empanada. Next time, I'd order a la carte to try a variety of empanada flavors.

I've walked by a number of times, possibly bought some bread before when a gentleman manned this stand. For the past couple weeks, I couldn't help but notice the propped sign (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=tDZXi6zXTfsuszrzdi0AHw&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q) and be tempted to try something. I succumbed on a recent Saturday in trying a couple for breakfast the next few days and getting one for a friend. I ordered two Persian empanadas (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=f4DmcSlskJrb1Yf_aoAJlg&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q), one for the friend and the other myself; I enjoyed the filling (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q), beef kebab and rice, which had good flavors and a nice mouth feel as I reheated it for breakfast the next morning. The following day, I reheated an Italian (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=_1Ck7WbV8LeYuyU9qKdjIQ&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q); though flavorful, the filling (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=dEerMRgzZo9-_ZgZmeVV7A&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q) of garbanzo and lentils (vegan) was on the dry side. What really gave these a boost were the two provided sauces, the green being tangy with a bite and the black one that was tame and reminded me of olive paste. Kudos to them for their generosity in giving one of each sauce for each pastry. The young lady who helped me was learning how to use the payment device so another lady assisted. As I thanked them for helping me, the second lady generously gave me a lemon hummus which I gifted to a hummus fan friend. Will try some of the other flavors on my future shopping trips here.

Guatemalan pulled chicken empanada. So good!!!

Only had one thing: Guatemalan pulled chicken empanada. I tell you what: it. Was. Bomb. And so were the dipping sauces that came with it. So good, in fact, that I saved them and used them again with dinner. Can't wait to try more from this little gem.

    Yummmmmm!!!!!

This little retail area badly needed something new besides boutique, hair/nail salon, beauty salon,…read morejewelry salon, lifestyle designer, clothing consignment store or studio for a better YOU. Just a bit different, no need to overdo things in this little area behind the small Menke Park / Piccolo Pavilion area in Corte Madera. Hiding in plain sight as it were, there have always been salons of one stripe or another along the block, essentially a salon of salons. For a time I did find something here for myself, way back when vhs rental movies were a thing. This was in a fairly large retail space, almost like a separate little cottage at the far east end, around the corner and somewhat hidden from view from the parking lot. Ironic then that this is the very place I find myself going again today. Zonda Meats is the addition to this area that's especially timely now as grocers nearby are closed, and premium quality butcher shops almost nonexistent. I happened on Zonda the other day while biking down the little side street of Montecito that forms the east side of the small park. The owner in residence, Alberto Lataliste, is from Argentina but has been in the USA for many years. I worked in northern Argentina for more than a decade and developed a great appetite for the beef raised there, and the way cuts of meat often follow muscle groups rather than slicing through them as is done here. Alberto's focus on meat quality is to identify and import quality producers there and delivering without freezing or addition of preservative. The selection is extensive so you'll benefit from making your own quality comparisons. In addition to the meat counter, there are excellent sandwiches and in near future my own favorite, empanada. The sandwiches are very generous and outside is a pleasant courtyard with tables for lunch. I'm glad to see an assortment of imported preserved meat, and another favorite of mine, Dulce de Leche from Argentina, which is much superior to the few brands made here. So here's to a great reception for Zonda Meats, arriving just in time for summer grilling in my backyard parrilla.

We have been pleased with all of the products we've purchased from Zonda - ribeye steaks, pork chops, bacon, and a variety of sausages. The quality is top notch - tender, flavorful, and worth the drive. (And occasional difficult parking.) I especially want to call out the chicken apple sausage. It actually tastes of apple. So many don't. The staff has always been exceptionally helpful. They're always ready to make recommendations and to help you select the perfect cut of meat. The shop itself is clean and bright.

My husband and I decided to give this spot a try after getting many rave reviews not only on yelp but on Eater SF (or maybe it was SFGate?). Anyway, we arrived around an hour before close, most places in this area close at 9pm btw. We were greeted by the host who walked in from near the kitchen area. We decided to sit outdoors since the weather was pleasant. We found a table for two near the projector showing a muted black and white film on the brick wall. The chairs had blankets over them just in case it gets chilly at night. It was very thoughtful. I decided to order their special 3 course meal including a white wine ($45!). It was like they had their own restaurant week specials like SF but I don't believe that exists in Marin. The 3 course meal included a beet salad, pasta (it was the screw shaped kind) with Bolognese and a tiramisu which was my fav of all 3. The white wine was a bit on the sweet side. My husband had the pappardelle pasta with oxtail. That was a treat! I liked his dish more than mine but all of it was so much we had to take half home! The complimentary focaccia really pushed us over the edge. I would definitely come back to try their pizzas!

We also had an issue with timing--our entrées didn't come out together, even though it was still early and not very busy, which was frustrating for a group meal. I ordered a hazy IPA, which came in a can with a glass of ice and a lime--an unusual presentation. Drinks were good but it was interesting that they don't have beer on tap especially since they have a large bar! Food-wise, we ordered the ceviche along with salsa and chips, and both were really tasty. The tacos are especially yummy and definitely a highlight. They have mole and solid enchiladas. While the food and drinks delivered, the service and a few inconsistencies kept it from being a great experience.

There's plenty of free parking at this Marin County highly stylized mall. My wife had the SHAVED RIBEYE ON CHARRED GARLIC BREAD, Emmentaler Swiss, Cherry Peppers, with Au Jus. I've heard it referred to as the best French dip ever consumed. My dietary needs are a bit limited, but I enjoyed the CHARRED HEIRLOOM BROCCOLINI with Lemon, Garlic Confit, Calabrian Chili, and some wonderful french fries with aïoli. A wonderful Lioco Pinot Noir complimented my meal nicely. The Village in Corte Madera features top retailers to include Apple, Verizon, Williams Sonoma, Anthropology, Johnny Was, to name a few. And, of course, Nordstrom (which is the main anchor to this facility) with a wonderful assortment of high-quality merchandise and top name-brand representation featuring men's and women's footwear. Heck, there are a few showrooms of electric car brands at the Village Marin. What a welcome reprieve from the deteriorating big city retailing landscape, and so nearby! The flavors were authentic and flavorful without being overly Americanized. The pork curry was absolutely delicious and is definitely a must-order. The palata was a great starter -- flaky, warm, and exactly what you'd want. The miso black cod was another standout. The broth it was simmered in was incredibly flavorful, and the fish was perfectly cooked. The garlic noodles were also done really well with the right noodles and great flavor -- honestly better than some places known specifically for garlic noodles. And of course, the coconut rice is always worth ordering. We skipped dessert since nothing really stood out, but I would love to see them add more traditional Burmese desserts like faluda in the future. Parking wasn't too difficult, especially if you circle around the back neighborhood area. The wait was reasonable, the outdoor patio seating was nice, and the service was attentive throughout the meal. Definitely a spot I'd come back to when craving Burmese food.
