When I bought my house over 30 years ago, it had a very old hydronic heating system that didn't work well. Over many years, I upgraded the system with several different companies. I replaced all the boiler and pressure components at least twice, and it still often worked poorly. I became an expert at fiddling with pressures and temperatures, trying to keep the system working. Every maintenance company had a different solution, but none worked well. Then a company I used for HVAC systems on other properties recommended Marin Mechanical. They suggested replacing the entire boiler and pump system, which I agreed to. It has been working perfectly for about 5 years. For the first time, I never have to adjust anything. I have been in the real estate business for 50 years. I have never had better work than this done for any project. When I moved into my house in Fairfax in 2022 I had to do yearly backflow inspections. Marin Mechanical apparently had been doing the work with the prior owner so I continued to hire them the past three years. Within 48hrs of them coming out this year to do the test, a neighbor walking their dog woke us at 4:45am ringing our doorbell. When we got outside we found the backflow system was shooting gallons of water out into the street. I shut off the water main to the house and called Bryan at Marin Mechanical. He said he would send his guy back to verify it was sealed up correctly. I turned it back on to get some video, but the leak stopped... Bryan said he would still send his guy out to check on it. It took about 4 days for him to come back while I was out. I was shocked to see a bill show up for an extra $205. When I complained he replied that I was lucky that he only charged me 50%. I will never hire these guys again, and will be reporting them to the county. read more

Spectacular service! Yes, I know, it sounds exaggerated; but, it's truly an accurate description of my experience with Marin Mechanicsl. We arrived at a property we had not used for several weeks and realized that the radiant heat system was not working. I scanned Yelp to find a suitable company to help with the problem and reached-out to MM. My call was answered by a knowledgable person who asked logical questions to assess my problem. Since it was late afternoon, he told me they could have a tech out early the next day. As promised a received a call next morning alerting me to the techs arrival. The tech was a polite, respectful young man, who put on booties before entering my home. I lead him to the mechanical room that houses the equipment and he asked several questions, then said he would assess the problem. 15- minutes later he explained what he had discovered, then provided a clear and detailed explanation of the steps needed to correct the problem. I approved the work and he spent the next hour working diligently to correct the problem. He cleaned-up his work area after completing the repairs, and left. Let me start by saying that working with Marin Mechanical was a has been great. I am wrapping up a project in San Francisco that involved a full renovation of an existing home, and the addition of a 2 bedroom 2.5 bath second unit. The project has taken a little over a year, and during that time Marin Mechanical has been absolutely rock solid from start to finish. The scope of work for the projects was the installation of two separate radiant heat systems (each containing three heating zones spread through three levels), and two separate boilers for residential hot water. From the beginning of the estimate process, Brendan and his team could not have been more accessible and professional. The estimate was detailed and accurate, and they were happy to answer all of my question promptly. Over the course of the project if there were any changes to scope of work it was brought to my attention immediately, so there were no surprises in regard to payments. From the time they laid out the lines prior to the pouring of the concrete slab, to the final install of the thermostats. Marin mechanical always showed up when they said that they would, and we're a great team to have on the job site. They worked well with my schedule, and with the schedule of my other subs. The quality of their work is outstanding. They went above and beyond to make sure that the lines they pulled, and the pipes they laid, were as clean and well thought as possible. The system has worked flawlessly from the moment they turned it on. I can not recommend Marin Mechanical highly enough. These guys know their boilers! I have radiant floor heat in Clayton that was installed by "Nameless Worthless HVAC Company" in Dublin eight years ago. They installed it wrong. I don't know @#$% about boilers... It was then serviced by another "Worthless BIG HVAC company" in Berkeley for the next 8 years. They would come out, replace some parts, charge me a bunch of money and it would work - sort of. The boiler worked, but would heat the house in random locations while other parts of the house would never get over 60 degrees. It also burned a LOAD of propane. They never noticed it was installed WRONG. I just figured that's what it cost. WRONG again. I decided to find someone who was recommended by the boiler factory. Brenden came all the way out to Clayton and immediately informed me it was installed WRONG. I have no idea why "Worthless BIG HVAC company" never noticed this install failure for 8 years - Oh but they kept charging me to replace parts that didn't need replacing. My home now heats evenly and stays at a comfortable 71 degrees in the entire house and is just sipping my $2.45 a gallon propane. Best money I ever spent. They installed our original radiant heating system. When they came to fix it because our heat was out, they gave us a $2300 estimate. They did that work, we paid up, and nothing changed... still no heat. They are now offering a $3,000 and a $7,000 estimate for more work. We are almost through the winter with no heat. I had the misfortune of working with another company that is the polar opposite of Marin Mechanical--I assure you having a competent, qualified, personable and infinitely skilled plumbing crew that know the ins and outs of not only their radiant systems, but have enough knowledge to tease apart the slipshod work of others makes a world of difference. I called Marin in to install a few new loops in our radiant system and move some things around. They discovered that the original installation was flawed, the system not properly sealed so that corrosion was happening and parts were failing, they took them off and showed me the build up. They came out multiple times as these parts failed following the significant rough plumbing, always congenial, always responsive, and tuned the system so that now our house is nice and toasty where as before our bedroom radiant wall units barely could heat the space. If you're considering radiant or you've fallen prey to other less competent companies and are looking for someone to take over and fix their mess, call these guys, you'll be glad you did. read more

STAY AWAY!! I called and made an appointment to have my home inspected for hydronic heating repair. He recommended a new boiler and pumps and I just had those inspected and working properly a couple months ago. He made some repair and now I am without hot water in the house for 2+ days. My family and kids haven't been able to shower or bathe, and his arrogant attitude made things worst. "yeah find someone else if you think they can do a better job. I don't have time to talk on the phone I gotta go". Ultimately it is still broken and he walked away with my money and did not complete the job. read more

We had some real problems with the amount of hot water dispersed throughout our recently build house and found our tankless system was too small. Some companies handle the heating but often blamed some issues on the plumbing and suggested I call a plumber - then the plumber suggested I call a heating company when they couldn't solve the issue. Very frustrating and expensive process without results. Jason from Marin Mechanical said they could handle everything and he built-out a new tankless system that really looks like a masterpiece when compared to our previous system. It works great and Jason was very attentive to following up quickly to make adjustments in our system as we broke it in. Be aware if you stay on the phone when they think the call is over you will hear the owner swear at you and say a lot of really nasty things. I would never trust them to be at my house again. If you try to figure out a lower cost solution they will deeply resent you. I had used these guys 4 years ago for a backflow test which was fine. I tried them out again when I needed help with a testing and potential moving of my backflow. They came out the same day and everything seemed ok until Jack called me up to tell me that his original estimate of $250 to move the pipe would likely be between $500-$800. I told him that that was more money than I was hoping to spend and if there was a way for me to do some of the digging work to save a little bit of the money. I noticed he got agitated so I said I would have to think about it but would call him back when I considered my options. I put down my headset and started working but I heard someone suddenly yelling into the headset which was odd. When I put the headset back on it ends up the owner Jack was still talking on the phone to himself chewing me out. I won't put down all of the things he said but the essence was that I was a terrible person because I was trying to save money and that I was a blankity blank blank this and that. After a minute of listening to him I interrupted saying I was still on the phone and could hear him. Needless to say this was a very awkward and strange encounter. I would never trust this guy to come to my house and he clearly has a large disparity between his public and private face. I am updating this review because I found out yesterday that the $500-$800 repair he quoted me two weeks ago was totally bogus as another plumber came in and was able to do test my backflow with a 90 degree fitting for $130. My on-demand water heater which heats both the water for my faucets, as well as for my old world radiator heating system, was overdue for a flush and maintenance. Additionally, I had some specific questions regarding its mechanical health. Brendan was extremely responsive and professional. He provided clear, detailed information about the services provided and was patient with my many questions. He was highly communicative via text, email, and phone and was able to schedule a service appointment within a week of my initial phone call. It gets better: he sent The Fantastic Jason to do the service. Not only was Jason on time for an 8am appointment (this includes slogging through weekday morning traffic from Marin to my Oakland home), he was methodical, incredibly attentive to details and explained them to me clearly and respectfully without a hint of superiority or impatience. He was extremely professional and thorough, and took his time to problem-solve some curiosities the plumbing system was presenting. Additionally, my heating unit is in my attic, so Jason spent a lot of time climbing a not quite tall enough ladder requiring him to lift himself up into the attic space. Jason was good-natured and good-humoured and even willing to go out of his way to purchase a possibly needed part, so as to save the trouble of me scheduling a follow-up appointment. My experience with Brendan and Jason was high caliber, and I recommend their work and expertise enthusiastically. read more

We were referred to Marin Mechanical by a radiant heat specialist in San Francisco who was retiring. We made the decision to go with radiant heat because our house is 1,000 sq. ft. and we were expanding to 1,500 sq. ft. but space was still at a premium and we didn't want to take up limited wall or floor space with air ducts, or an air return, or take up space in the garage with a gas furnace and a water heater. We chose a combi-steam boiler to address both needs. It's a small unit that fit on the wall in our garage. It was the right choice and worth the extra money. Brendan at Marin Mechanical was very professional and always available to address our concerns - even while on vacation. We had an unusual malfunction with our Lochnivar unit and Brendan took care of it immediately and got us a brand new unit. He has been great with follow through and we expect them to be around for many years to service the unit. I would highly recommend radiant heat for San Francisco and Marin Mechanical to do the installation and yearly upkeep. read more
