Explained what he was doing and what he found. Assured me that the furnace was working well despite the high-pitched whine and where it might be coming from. I was happily surprised at how straight forward and transparent Hector was on quickly diagnosing our intermittent central AC problem. Five star service, start to finish! Messages flooded in pretty quickly after my HVAC project "request-a-quote" and I chose Rick/American Heating because of his personalized response. (Not to mention their 5* rating!) I understand larger companies are busy and use auto-reply but for old-school girls like me, I appreciated the human touch. My mom's dinosaur furnace was not working and Rick worked SOOOOO professionally and patiently with her (she has significant verbal/receptive aphasia,) explaining all the options clearly. (SIDE NOTE: Aphasia is an acquired communication disorder that impairs a person's ability to process language, but does not affect intelligence. Please always treat them with respect and speak to them, not to their "translator." Rick was amazing with her, even writing out her options because that helped her understand.) We wanted to replace our old gas furnace with an efficient heat pump to both heat and air condition our home in San Rafael. I immediately went to yelp for quotes and I chose Rick (Ricardo Mora: American Heating & Air) out of 10 other quotes & responses because of his straight forward, personalized and clear message that was followed with a genuine phone call where I immediately knew that he worked with integrity, competence and care. His arrangement demonstrated right away and set him apart from others that he wanted to do the right thing for the clients. Rick and his partner arrived promptly on the time as he promised and they went straight to trouble shooting. They got the work done in 1.5 hours despite the fact that it could've turned into a much more profitable project and have taken advantage of the situation. So glad I found this company on Yelp. Rick was great coming out to see if he could fix my 35+ year old furnace. After giving it a go, with a hopeful fix that didn't last, I decided to replace the unit. He gave me three options regarding cost, efficiency and types of units. His two guys were in my garage from 8:30am to 4:30pm removing the old and putting in the new. Testing everything, leaving my garage cleaner then when they arrived and taking a few extra minutes just to make sure there were no missed nails laying anywhere. I waited until the installation and inspection were complete before leaving this review. I met with 7 or 8 HVAC companies, asked tons of questions, got estimates, sent emails and texts with more questions, had Rick, the owner of American Heat & Air, come back a couple times to go over different options and scenarios. Then I got more estimates over a period of about 2 months. Finally, I checked to make sure his contractor license, business insurance and work compensation insurance were all up to date. I read the contract in its entirety and then reached out to him with requests to add to our receipt. I am very picky and I tend to be mistrustful of anyone who stands to make money off of selling me more stuff. I was so happy with Rick and American Heat that I recommend them to any and everyone. An HVAC company before Rick told me that I needed to replace all of my ducting. Rick said we could work with what we had, he even said that it was great to have the galvanized metal ones that were already there. So instead of trying to upsell and push me to make more money, he was honest. He did a small repair to one duct and added a damper to another section to make the house more energy efficient. I requested that he add tubing from the bathroom fan up to the roof and he did that as well, no charge. Some companies pushed their 'preferred' product instead of offering different brands. He did not push a certain brand. None of the companies offered the warranty that American Heat offers. The bigger companies push their annual club that they want you to join and you can only get the five year labor warranty if you pay to be in it. Some of them want to sit down right there after their inspection so they can give you their sales pitch and spend time talking about their company and why they save you so much money. After I had met with two big well known companies (not even Moore or Simpson, companies with much better reviews) and heard their sales pitch and their offer that if I sign the contract and make a quick decision to schedule the work they'll give me an additional discount, I decided to meet with other HVAC companies because I didn't like the sales tactics. Rick listened to my preferences and concerns. He did not rush me and answered my questions. He didn't laugh or judge when I told him I didn't want a super high efficiency heater or question me about why I didn't want to or try to convince me how much it will save me. He even said a family member of his wanted the same thing and it worked well for them. I told him I wanted an 80% one stage and he gave me an estimate. Then I changed my mind and decided to go with two stage and he gave me an estimate for that. At one point I panicked and asked how much a high efficiency furnace would be so he gave me another estimate. He never bugged me to make a decision. I finally decided on a two stage but I did not want ultra low nox and he was very honest that they are no good. Other hvac techs said the same thing. He said he would try to find me one. He continued to reach out to leads and tracked down a Trane two stage 80% gas furnace. Rick is patient and he communicates. You're not left wondering if or when you'll hear from him. Another hvac company said they had some 80% gas furnaces in stock but whenever I reached out with questions they said I needed to hurry because they were in demand and didn't want me to miss out. The pressure tactics of salesman sends me running from a company. Rick never, ever did that. He was kind and patient. He answered every question. He was very honest and I fully trust him. He was negotiable on price and was very reasonable and fair. We scheduled the installation and they showed up and put booties on their shoes and covered the floor to protect it. He introduced me to the two technicians. They explained how the thermostat worked, took care of the duct repair, damper, line and heater install and tested to make sure it ran correctly. They also installed my new C02 monitor. About a month later the heater suddenly wouldn't turn on. I texted Rick. It was Sunday. He texted back immediately and was there in 45 minutes. He checked and apparently there had been an electric surge of some kind, thank you PG&E. A fuse shut the heater off to protect it so it did its job. Rick ran out and bought a 2 pack of fuses, installed one to replace the blown fuse and showed me what to do if it should happen again. This was part of his 10 year warranty which is amazing, quick service. There was nothing wrong with the heater and it still continues to run beautifully. Next winter I will have them come back to service & clean it because they also charge less than other hvac companies. We just passed our HERS inspection so now I can say with confidence that we don't HAVE to get new ducts, unless we choose to. You can do a ton of research and meet with companies and get many estimates or you can just save yourself hours and hours and call Rick. They are the best! read more
