We have gone to marina's for years. This year we ordered a Black forest cake for a Birthday. The lady on the phone said the size we ordered would feed 18 people also asked for extra chocolate shavings (and paid for it) When my friend brought it to us it was a disappointment. The cake cost over 18 dollars and slicing it 1/2 inch pieces all we got was 12 slices and shavings where deficient. Sorry to say the cake was lacking. I've ordered a few cakes from here, and they're always moist and delicious. Not overly sweet, which I like. Favorite is the Viennese (?) With the chocolate and vanilla cake layers with pineapple filling. Their designs are simple - this isn't a fancy place, so don't expect very creative designs on the cake or anything Their baked goods are ok - some were drier than I would have liked. My husband asked if they would discount their pastries (he came in when they were closing at 6pm), and they said no. I've been to many bakeries that will sell their goods at a lower price so that they have fresh pastries to sell the next day...which makes me wonder how long they keep their pastries around. read more

On 11/12 I went by to get some of my childhood cookies. When I was a kid my mother and sister always takes us here. I can remember like it was yesterday! The good old days when u didn't worry about anything but just playing with friends. I decided to pick some up for my kids so they can try them out. Maybe we can continue the tradition that I had with my mom and sister. They taste exactly the same! Wonderful! But! There is only one thing that bothered me. The lady behind the counter! No smile no customer service what so ever. They act like they're doing u a favor. It's expensive so at least u can smile at me as u take my money. I own my own business and I would never treat my customers like that. I'm big on customer service that's what get you the last 2 stars on Yelp. Terrible experience. Hardly any pastries in the display case. Pastries were old and dry. Not the Marinas that used to be. The new owner needs to bake the way they use too. Fresh pastries are why people go to a backer. Otherwise it is cheaper To go to a supermarket buy substandard bake goods. read more

I drove from the Northeast to purchase a cake or pastries for an upcoming function (actually convinced my spouse this was the best choice in El Paso). Decided on a plain Heidi's cheesecake, after we tried a slice for ourselves and found it to be delicious. We were informed by the sales staff that the price was $29.50, which is very reasonable for a German cheesecake. The Salesperson overheard my wife and I discussing that I could add cherries and whip cream at home, whereupon they informed us that they could add these at no additional charge. We agreed that would be an awesome idea, paid for the cake and the cake was taken back into the bakery. A few minutes later the same salesperson came out and informed us that there would be an additional charge of $10.00 to apply cherries and whip cream, which would bring the total cost to over $40.00, after sales tax, for this cheesecake. Although the salesperson told us that she had never known the bakery to charge extra for these toppings, she apologized for the mistake. We asked to talk to a Manager. When the gentleman came out, he informed us that the cherries, simple Maraschino cherries at that, were expensive and that he could not give them to us for free. He did offer to give us 10 cherries for free, but stated he would have to charge us for the baker's labor time of 30 minutes to place the 10 cherries onto the cake, one for each slice that would be cut. I have been in the Customer business field for a long time. When a Customer is informed by a Salesperson in good faith that something is to be provided "gratis", then the Management should apply that to the product free of charge, as this was indicated at the time of purchase and even after the purchase, as a sign of good Customer satisfaction practices. I come from Germany, have been in El Paso for over 30 years and have been shopping at Marina's German Bakery for cakes, pastries and cookies for myself, as well as gifts for my friends for many, many years due to this bakery's quality. I have always been impressed with their genuine Customer service satisfaction practices, always making sure to suggest to others Marina's as the place to buy delicious, quality desserts for their own functions. As of today, I will no longer be shopping at Marina's, nor will I be recommending them as a place for my friends to purchase their desserts. Although I realize that my business alone will not affect their bottom line, I am sure that word of mouth and this review will help steer more Customer,s business away than just mine...shame that you have had to lose a loyal, longtime Customer through apathetic Customer satisfaction practices. read more

Sorry but I was so disappointed. I got bread and pastry to go. The apple streusel pastry was like wet cardboard and there were barely any apples. It was all nuts. Very strange. Honestly, we threw it away. What a waste of money. The pretzels were just okay but do not compare to the big hot pretzels street vendors sell in NYC. The rye bread was dense and very small. Can't make a decent sandwich with such small bread. The eclairs were filled with pastry cream. Ugh! Doesn't anyone use custard anymore??? The cherry cheese pastry was the best of the lot but still not up to par with what I am used to from the great bakeries back east. Oh well, my waistline thanks you. Will not be back. read more

Genuine German pastries, cakes, and breads are made fresh here daily. Marina's also sells German sausages for you to take home and cook/grill for yourself. I'll eat here when I am homesick for German food! I've read the reviews about the cakes and cookies being dry or hard. I have to mention that some things are in fact more on the dry side. However, I always ask what's freshly baked, and those are always delicious! Some things are made on different days! Also, some German bakery is simply more "crunchy" or hard just because that's how it is supposed to be. So you just have to try yourself! read more

My wife and I got a light lunch here. The employees were all very friendly and courteous. They had a great selection of various German pastries and sandwiches. We had bratwurst with brotchen and German potato salad. Excellent food and it brought back memories of our time spent in Germany. We had no time to taste the pastries but we will be returning soon. Although the food is fine (we get their brotchen) the service is horrible. I don't expect warm and fuzzy; a smile would even be nice but unexpected; but to be completely and intentionally rude to a paying customer is unacceptable. The blonde worker was so rude and abrupt with my mother that she may never go back, and she has been a customer for at least 30 years--some people should know their limitations and not attempt to interact with the public (she said the other lady was nice and friendly). If you don't want to be treated like a business is doing you a favor for being their customer you may need to take a deep breath before you enter their shop. read more

The rum balls were amazing! I ordered a black forest cake that was pretty good. I think it could have used SLIGHTLY more taste but it was soft and still good. I ordered it and it was ready within 30 minutes. I guess you get one star for being open? Came in to try a baked treat. From reading other reviews, I decided to try the cakes. Had the Viennese cake, black forest and a nutty hazel cookie. The cakes tasted like soft, old, cardboard with very little flavor and dry texture, not to mention lack of freshness. The nutty hazel cookie tasted like a basic run of the mill pecan Sandie that had no originality besides the toasted whole hazelnut in the middle. I bought a piece of Black Forest cake and when I got in my car, it was still frozen. This was very disappointing. Last time I got one I wondered why it tasted funny and now I know. They aren't fresh. I just had a blackforest cake, compliments of my derby sister Carmen from this bakery and wow. The cake was light, but surprisingly filling. The whipped cream frosting was smooth and the perfect sweetness without overpowering the chocolate of the cake. All I can say is "wow". I'm going to be visiting this bakery very soon. And, they can put in liquor (yes, a booze cake) - which is the one thing that can make this cake even more amazing. read more

I was exited to come to try Marina German place but as I walked in the server seemed like he was force to be there. When I ask if he could clean a table he looked at me like if I was serious. He went inside grabbed a soak towel and wiped my table like a little kid not wanted to do so. I don't know about the food but first impression is very important. El paso has very few 5 star businesses, but this is one of them. We went for a specific bread but wound up with an assortment of tasty treats (all very good and fresh). We will be back, and have recommended it to friends. Those complaining about the lack of "customer service", need to go make friends elsewhere. The german culture does not do small talk like we do, strictly business and theres nothing wrong with that. If you want that loud obnoxious mariachi band then go to taco cabana. Saw 1 bad review because they showed up late and was unhappy about the selection and quality... Its a bakery, learn some small business economics and show up earlier. Bakeries dont bake nonstop in order to control waste, get there earlier for a larger fresh assortment. read more

Ordered a cake for my wife's birthday. My wife very much wanted sweet buttercream frosting. I ordered 3 weeks in advance a chocolate cake with buttercream filling and Vanilla buttercream frosting outside. They assured me they would take care of it and I set it to be picked up the morning of my wife's birthday. I went back 2 other times in person to verify they had it correct, I wanted my wife to get what she wanted. A week before i sent a message in Facebook messenger to verify once more they had the order correct and wrote out exactly what kind of cake, filling and frosting. They said yes they had it and it would be ready. Picked up the cake on the morning of her birthday and it looked pretty. Cut into it that night to serve to my wife and the cake had whipped filling and whipped frosting. Not sweet and not buttercream. My wife was really disappointed as was I. I don't know what else I could have done, i would have thought 2 in person follow up's and one message would have been sufficient. I spend $32 on a 10 inch round cake that no one would eat. I messaged them about mistake 3 days ago and still no response. Do not waste your money here. read more

I took my husband to Marina's after seeing the reviews on this site. When we stepped in, I was elated at the selection of baked goods that were in the display case but a little put off that they didn't have many breads to display. We sat down and ordered a ham and swiss croissant and wiener wurstchen from a woman who didn't seem to understand what we wanted. She had to come back to the table and double check with us, so I physically pointed to what we wanted on the menu and she understood, or so I thought. She arrived shortly with our order, except she had forgotten my husbands potato salad, so I asked for it and she went off in a huff to go get more. The food was mediocre at best. Lukewarm store bought sausages, decent croissant and the bread was disappointing. The potato salad wasn't the best either. We thought we would try again and order a slice of Black Forest cake. It was horrendous, I've had chain store-bought cake that was better than this. The cake was more dry than the desert air, the frosting was sickeningly sweet and half frozen which means they make their cakes beforehand, then freeze them and thaw for customers. We also bought several cookies and a bag of meringues. The cookies were dry and tasteless with the exception of one and we never received the meringues. I wanted to like this place so badly because I longed for the taste of family holiday get-togethers, but if I could rate it a "0", I would. The staff was arrogant, unfriendly and not helpful, the lunch foods were disappointing and the baked goods were awful. read more

While the cakes and pastries are delicious they need to work on customer service. The teachers at Eastwood high school told me to go to Marinas because my wife,s birthday was in four days. I ordered a cake with butter cream frosting. The girl that took the order was very young.I had gone in person and paid for the cake. Three days later when I called, the older lady that answered told me there was no such order. I went in person showed her my receipt and she still could not find the cake that should have been ready. I was given a cake (pineapple) but she was not able to put yellow roses on it as I requested because this lady said it would take three days to order the roses!! Three days? Other places use a special contraption that allows them to create the flowers. Some do it by hand. It was only a ten inch cake not a giant one to present to the President of the United States.Instead of asking for my money back, I took the cake home. When we cut a slice and tasted it, it tasted like smoke. I am not in the habit of insulting businesses but I will never set foot in there again.
