I moved into the area about a half year ago and have passed this spot more times than I can count. I finally stopped in and was curious about their ultimate cheesesteak. I love myself a cheesesteak and I wanted to see if this would be a new favorite I'd enjoy wearing out. They loaded this sandwich with onions, green peppers, and mushrooms. They added some of their pasta sauce on the bottom as well. The sandwich was good, but I thought it needed a bit more flavoring/spices. The bread was some of the softest I've experienced though and the cheese was a good amount. The combo was paired with a pickle spear and a bag of potato chips. This may sound strange, but can potato chips steal the show? Because they did. Super crunch and salty. Yum-O! I tried their coleslaw too and it seemed like to sat there awhile. It was tasteless and I ended up throwing the pint out. I will say the staff here are very friendly and helped me decide on some sandwiches and gave me an honest review of their favorites and least favorites. I appreciate that. Finally visited Marinos Deli for a quick sandwich at lunch after I read a story about this mom-and-pop business in NE Minneapolis. Conveniently located off Johnson NE (free parking on the street), this local restaurant serves up some good hoagies, sub-marino sandwiches (see what I did there?), pasta, and other Italian food. It's a unique restaurant because it's kind of like a deli and fast casual restaurant with a few tables inside, but when I arrived shortly after 1 pm, it was pretty empty. Overall, the service was great, it's a family-owned place and the mother and daughter were working and were very pleasant. The place smells terrific, if you like Italian food and good sauces. While the decor is a step-back in time, I really enjoyed the taxidermy walleyes which is a true reflection of being a Minnesota business. The sandwich I selected was good, came with a small bag of chips, and wasn't too pricey - the prices are actually pretty good, but the only thing I would say is the sizes aren't huge. I recommend Marinos if you are in the neighborhood and definitely want to try the pasta and meat ravioli next time! read more

Stopped in for some meats and cheese to make a sub at home, had everything I needed including bread. Very nice staff, classic mom and pop Italian deli. Got myself some Copa, Genoa, and Mortadella and they were all great. Highly recommended, staff also recommended calling ahead to fill orders to pick up especially during busy times. Traveling for work and wanted a sandwich, so I searched on Yelp and this deli popped up. When I went in, I was pleasantly surprised! Just a cute mom and pop type deli, where you can smell everything will be delicious. I got a DIY sandwich, and by the time I was pulling out my chair to sit, the basket of food was already on its way to me. So speedy and so delicious! I have been coming to Marino since 1985. I have visited them more times than I can count. A wonderful family owns and runs this place. Sandwiches are great, though I can't say I've had one since my first visit 1985, since I love their Italian options so much! The extremely reasonably priced food has remained consistently delicious for 40 years. Inside is a small deli with some tables you can eat at, nothing fancy but quite pleasant. Staff are warm and the food comes out quick. I highly recommend Marinos, as an Italian aficionado, I consider their sauce to be my favorite. I was out in San Francisco for a while and had the opportunity to eat at several different North Beach establishments, including some that had been around for many many years, but nothing in my mind came close to Marino's. TL:DR; The lasagna was delicious, the service left a lot to be desired. We wanted to love this place, but in all honesty, we didn't have a great experience. We needed to cater a party for our small nonprofit yesterday, and wanted to support a local family owned restaurant. My initial communication was via email and went fairly well. I was looking for a vegetarian entrée, and happily I learned that their lasagna is made vegetarian by default. They recommend buying meatballs if you want meat with it, or you can also purchase a meat sauce. I ordered a full pan of lasagna, which I learned they make without the sauce, (apparently some people prefer it that way). So I also had to purchase 2 quarts of sauce. We also needed some good bread for the party, and I had planned to get that at a bakery, but when I saw they made hard rolls, I thought that I could save myself a trip and kill two birds with one stone. So I ordered two dozen hard rolls and butter cups. The party was at noon, so I asked to pick everything up at 11:15 AM. When we got there at 11:15, our order was not packed and ready. Additionally, the proprietor realized he forgot to thaw out the hard rolls. They offered to just nuke them in the microwave and send me along with them. I told them the venue does not have an oven so there's no way partially thawed rolls are going to work. If they had apologized at this point and tried to make things right, it would have gone a long way toward our good will. But they said "how about this sliced white bread instead, it's less expensive anyway", and we were out of time, since we had to go set up the party before the guests arrived. So I said OK fine. Then he starts ringing us up, and I object because none of the prices seem to match what was on the website. I had a specific budget to stick to, not spending my own money, as it was for the nonprofit we volunteer for. I meticulously researched places all week in order to stick to the budget. Never once did we get an apology for the incorrect pricing, and he did not try to make things right by honoring any of the prices on the website, either. (i.e. the hard rolls were supposed to be $4.99 a dozen, the white bread was not cheaper at $5.39 a loaf). I get that they are a small business and they need to make a profit, but customer service should still mean something. It's just wrong to force a customer to pay more than your advertised price. We didn't have much choice at that point, so I decided to just pay for it and get out of there. My husband was offering to pay the extra out of his own pocket, which is also wrong. We ended up being late, because all of that back-and-forth while they were packing up the order took 15 minutes. He kept saying he had emailed me a photo of the receipt, but I had not seen that last email. When I saw it today, the total was within our budget, I think because he forgot to put the hard rolls on there. The good news is the lasagna was a hit, everyone said it was delicious, and we barely had any left at the end. The red sauce was tasty, and even had a bit of heat, which was a pleasant surprise. But no one ate the bread. It wasn't anything special, just kind of your basic sliced white bread. But the unpleasant pickup may have soured our group on using them in the future. Probably not really worth making a couple extra bucks if you're losing a group of potential future customers. read more

Meagerly-meated Italian submarine with interesting flavor profile, yet poor condiment execution. We ordered the standard Marino's Italian which is made like a new-world Italian sub (Genoa salami, capocollo, provolone, topped with onion, lettuce, tomato, Italian dressing). They also slide a crushed meatball in there. The meatball is a surprisingly nice addition. The breaded pork/beef blended meatball with the sharper flavored leanish meats makes for a nice hot/cold combo. The meatball is well-executed and flavorful. However, this sub has some fundamental flaws. 1) The portion of meat is inadequate. It's an overstatement to call it a "sub." It's more of a lighter sandwich on an Italian roll. 2) The sub had hot and wet lettuce on it. Hot/wet lettuce is perhaps one of the worst possible addition to any sandwich. This mangled wet ingredient adds an unpleasant and slimy consistency that deadens the palate and disappoints especially on sandwiches with a dearth of meat. read more

I started a new job not far from this place. I was brought here to give it a try, and informed that for roughly 15 years my coworkers having been coming to this place. It's a tiny spot, but they would pack it full with a group regularly. Great hole-in-the-wall divey atmosphere, with only a handful of tables so come early or plan on taking it to go! Parking is a small lot, trucks will not fit. Walk up and order from the handwritten menu on the wall. If you happen to snag a table, they will bring the food out to you. We ordered the special, which was a meat sauce ravioli with bread. Only about $7 and surprisingly tasty! I have heard great things about their subs, and if you don't go for the food, go for the people. Everyone was very friendly and the staff were overly accommodating. They offered to bring up extra chairs when a few too many people showed up during the lunch rush! Overall lots of relaxed conversation, and it's clear everyone knows each other! When you're finished eating there is a trash can and a bin to set the dishes in. What a great local deli! read more

SUPER SANDWICH I love searching for hidden gems and Mariano's deli delivered. When I arrived at the icy parking lot I met a sweet old lady who asked me to help her through the snow. She told me how she was buying her son a gift card for Mariano's Deli. All I could think about was that her son is a lucky guy. As we walked in the store, I told her I was going to order my food and then I would walk her back to her car, after she bought the gift card. Finally, all of my years as a Boy Scout were finally paying off. Mariano's Deli opened in 1985 but the recipes were born in Italy in 1896 with Ralph Marino. He is the one who taught Mary Marino about cooking. Mary Marino known as "Nana" established her reputation cooking from the 40's through the 70's in various Minneapolis area restaurants. The best part...her recipes live on here at the restaurant every single day. The Meatballs are amazing and I'd highly recommend them. They even put sliced meatballs on their Italian sub sandwich. That's a first for me and it was really delicious. This sub sandwich was actually created by a customer who loved their daily Meatball sandwiches but wanted to eat something new on the menu. All I can think is that this customer was a culinary genius. They literally mixed two sandwiches and created something new. I learned that I could order the sub "Old School". Which means they will actually smash the whole Meatball on the sandwich. That is how they first made it for the customer who created it. I didn't learn this great tip from the owner Ralph, until I was leaving. I'm totally ordering it that way the next time I dine here. The bread is baked fresh daily using a family recipe. The sandwich is the best here and I'd totally get it again. I had the lasagna too but I wouldn't recommend it. I ordered it with a side of meatballs and that was the highlight. The lasagna is very simple with noodles, sauce and cheese. It lacked any complexity or depth. I guess I was hoping for more from the lasagna. You definitely do not want to miss this five table grocery store gem. You might even catch Ralph doing his paper work on two of the tables. No really. When I walked in it looked like he was doing his taxes. Ha! I simply love family businesses because they have all of the charm in the world. The "subs" are 60% warm soggy bread and warm soggy lettuce. The flavors of some of the meats are good, but it's a shrimpy little sandwich, not a sub, and the way it's prepared makes it honestly pretty disgusting. I live nearby and tried a number of different sandwiches over maybe ten visits over the span of a year or two, always hoping I maybe was just catching someone on an off day, but no. This is just how they roll. A lot of people say the pastas etc. are great. I haven't tried any of that, but a lot of people also say the sandwiches are great, when in fact they are even worse than Subway. Shockingly. So. Guess take that for what it's worth. It's one of those local institutions than I have to assume stays in business on reputation/tradition, not the current quality of the food. Sadly. Some people seem to like it, which is cool for them. This is a solid deli. It has many options including much more than sandwiches. Take home pizzas, lasagnas, spaghetti, ravioli, or have a deli sandwich in your choice of bread. Sandwiches come with chips (Ruffles?) and a pickle. I have had at least four different sandwiches and an entree all were pretty good. Good enough to keep me coming back and trying something different every time! It's a family owned business and they are happy to speak to you at your table if you decide to hangout. The place has been around for a while and I don't suspect it's going anywhere anytime soon. The prices are good and so is the food and service. I didnt feel like cooking dinner today and since I was in the area, i decided to pick up dinner at Marino's Deli. It's a family-owned, and pretty small Italian deli with about 4-5 tables (?). They offer a lot of sandwiches on their menu, but since i wouldnt be eating the food right away, i decided to order lasagna, and jumbo ravioli with sausages to go. It was very inexpensive and the portion was also pretty nice. I really liked the sausage. It was flavorful and spicy. The ravioli was huge and tasted decent. My bf didnt like the ravioli that much because of the filling. He liked the lasagna a lot and thought the marinara was pretty good, but for me, the lasagna was a bit on a mushy side after reheated. Having grown up a few blocks away from Marino's, I had the chance to visit often. They have delicious sandwiches, awesome pasta, and everything is very fresh. I'm a spaghetti addict so I'd suggest their spaghetti and ask for a slice of mozzarella melted on top. Pick up a loaf of their fresh bread when you're there, too. It might not make it home, though. I knew it looked like one of those places that's been there awhile, and when I walked in I realized that was the case. One of those places where nothing has been changed or moved since it opened. The place is small, a counter and a few tables to eat at. I ordered the Italian Meatball sandwich which comes with chips and a pickle. Our orders were up within a few minutes of sitting down, which my stomach and mouth are always oh so grateful for. So, about that sandwich. It was so soft....like I don't think I have ever had a hoagie bread that soft before. The meatballs were cut up which I appreciated because I prefer not to walk around with meatball all over my face for the remainder of the day. I think that next time I will order some peppers on the sandwich as everything slightly the same texture-soft meatballs, soft (heavenly) bread, and cheese. Don't get me wrong, I thought it was great.....but I think peppers would have made it even better. Prices were super reasonable. You know how pasta is always incredbily over-priced? Recently moved to the neighborhood, just 2 blocks from Marino's. Excited to know there is such a great Mom & Pop shop so close ( I actually spent my elementary school years 2 blocks away on Buchanan:). Went for my first visit this weekend. Did takeout with spaghetti, meatball and tiramisu for myself. Italian Chicken sandwich and meatball dip for my son who was at work. The menu pretty much covers what you want for a neighborhood place. I remember the restaurant on Central and I always loved their sauce...it's still Molto Bene (very good)! The meatball was awesome and I married an Italian New Yorker & lived there for 7 years.....I know a good Italian meatball! However, no bread was included and I really, really missed it The tiramisu was on-point! Perfecto My Son said the chicken sandwich was a little boring. I'm going to guess it's because he's used to chicken parm sandwiches and Marinos is grilled. But he said it was good. He also liked the meatballs, but the BIG problem was, there was no bread included for the dip either. So my son had a meatball dip with nothing to dip, lol. He also was sad because he was really looking forward to soak in' up some sauce! We didn't realize there was no bread until I delivered it to him at work in Lauderdale, so it was too far to go back to get the bread. The 2 young gentlemen that were working were very friendly and eager to help. They got the order right, just forgot the bread , and no eating utensils or napkins. Being new to the area, I've been curious about this little place when driving past. My daughter and I ventured it for a walk and I happened to be hangry when we crossed its path. I was really impressed with their cool selection for a deli and homemade foods and treats. I really had hoped to discover a little gem! The service was great and food looked nummy when it reached our table and they had more flavors of San Pelagrino then I knew existed but I was sadly disappointment in the taste of almost everything I tried. It's such a cool little Italian deli! The cool oversized ravioli just didn't have the fresh depth of Italian that I had hoped for. The sauce was pretty good though. The homemade cookie and the housemade pizzelles tasted old, stale and like the plastic bag they were in. I actually thru them away. The tiramisu was decent and the bread pudding was nice and gooey. Talk about a hole in the wall local joint! The food is pretty decent but not amazing. I had really high expectations based on the stellar reviews and mom & pop vibes of this restaurant but it was just ok. The tomato sauce on my ravioli was a bit watery and the flavor was just fine. I also had to knock it down a star because I can't recommend this place to anyone that has allergies. The staff isn't knowledgeable on this issue and even gave me bad info instead of saying they didn't know! The owner himself told me my dish was fine and then came back half way through my meal saying he forgot about one ingredient in my dish. Luckily I don't have a severe allergy. I did appreciate the huge selection of beverages and the expansive menu. I'm just not sure I'll be back. Mom and pop kind of places can be cute for being a bit unkept and rundown. I have been searching for a perfect Italian sub. Clearly, I did not descend from Italy, but I am a sucker for quality meats hugged by quality bread. And I'm not talking about ham and pepperoni. I had a hard time finding it at Marino's finally, because it's apparently called a "Philly Hoagie" - Capocollo, pepperoni, prosciuttini, provolone, topped with tomato, pickles, lettuce, onion, banana peppers, oregano & olive oil. (Sam W, are you reading this??) So I eagerly drove to NE, drooling. They have a small parking lot attached off of a somewhat busy street, yay! Inside, there are no frills - it's small, straight-forward, a little cluttered but clean, and it smells damnnnn good. I ordered the Philly Hoagie, a pint of housemade marinara, a Joia soda, and a couple meatballs. Ok so... the Philly Hoagie... though the ingredients were phenomenal, there was just too little of them! There was only a single very thin layer of each meat. I had to dig them out and taste them individually to really appreciate their flavor. But the quality (not quantity!) of the meats exceeded any I've had yet in the cities. The marinara was perfectly balanced and not too sweet or acidic. I enjoyed the meatballs and you can taste the care that went into them, though I wish they were more tender. Pro tip: I make breakfast sammies with sliced meatballs, marinara, egg fried w oregano, and mozzarella cheese on a english muffin. I totally plan on coming back for that Philly Hoagie (which came with a pickle and chips), but I would try to ask for extra meat (I was a vegetarian once lolz). read more

My wife grew up in the area and so I have eaten here a couple of times. I like this place. It's small and kind of a dive, but they have great food and awesome service. I'd go here just for the entertainment from the staff. I ordered the original Philly sandwich and that was one of the most delicious sandwiches I've had. The ingredients were fresh and the bread was nice and soft. I loved it. I was admiring all the hot sauces they have for sale too. It seems they have all sorts of odd stuff here. Finally, after 23 years, I found a REAL sub. What makes it real is the bread, very soft , fresh, and white. Not sure if it's what they use for Italian or not. I got the Philly, which is a cold version of what would be considered an Italian Mix. It wasn't the thickest, it could actually use a layer of genoa salami to the pepperoni and capacola. The flavor is all there, probably from the homemade Italian dressing. I bought my son a roast beef with pepper jack sub. He was lovin it. Then ran upstairs to enjoy it while watching TV. Service is very friendly, the food is good, and the specials always mean you will be trying something new.
