My husbands' grandparents have a long standing tradition of eating family dinners at Marion's, so I have been here thrice. It's an old school mid-west pizza joint, with cracker crust pizza. Cracker crust is not my favourite kind of pizza, but it it's still pizza, so it's delicious. For my money, though, the hot sandwiches are where it's at. Order at the bar and the counter, wait for your number and enjoy a blast from the past with a side of pizza. I get Marion's has been around for a long time and is a local staple. I get it. But the pizza isn't very good at all if I'm being honest. It's the local style where they cut it in small squares. The problem is it tastes like cardboard. It's incredibly bland and devoid of flavor. Ummm...I believe you are either a fan of Marion's or not. Nothing in-between. Others have given pretty accurate description of the pizza. The few things I feel that could be added: (1) to me, I prefer real sausage than the ground up "sausage" that they put on their pizza -- to be honest it looks like rodent droppings, (2) toppings are generally whatever you can buy from Sysco or GFS from a can -- mushrooms have that 'not so fresh' consistency and flavor, (3) the all cash policy is a throw back to when Marion was alive...he was well known throughout Dayton to be a t.i.g.h.t.w.a.d. so he wouldn't pay the 2% credit card fees (Note: Marion was a customer of my business...and gues what he paid with?). Finally, and this is the reason they get one star rather than 2. The last time we visited, we spent approximately $100+ for pizza and drinks, including several pitchers of beer. When we asked for a pitcher of water, the drink server said that this was against policy and he could give us glasses of water. I mean, really??? So, being curious, I asked the manager if there was any rationale for this. He tried to give a lame@#$ excuse that this, "...wouldn't leave enough pitchers for folks that wanted soft drinks or beer...". Come on...give me a break! I would have *paid* for a pitcher of water, but I couldn't!! It really insults the customer's intelligence to say something as stupid as this...they either need a better excuse/rationale or rethink this policy...or go to Oddlots and buy some more pitchers!!!! read more

You can order any toppings you like, however, don't be confused if you order the Super Cheese since it is actually an everything pizza but then covered with an extra layer of cheese on top...yum! I live in Columbus but have friends from Dayton who swear by Marion's. I was in the area over New Year's Eve and decided to give it a shot. The restaurant wasn't busy or anything like that, and the diners seemed to be enjoying their pizza. Typical night at Marion's, I suppose. I was disappointed in the pizza. It was slightly better than a budget frozen pizza. I literally found myself asking, "What is all the fuss about here?" I grew up on Marion's, so yeah, I am a fan! It's very different than any other pizza around. There really is no comparing it to Chicago, NY/NJ or anything that I know of. It is a simple, thin crust pizza. The menu is pretty simple and you can order the pizza the way you like. The deluxe is my favorite! They offer some sandwiches and salads as well. They serve coke products as well as beer and wine. For ever they only took cash, but they recently started accepting credit cards (visa/mc/discover) at least at the Centerville location! Ask anyone about Dayton food institutions and Marion's should be near the top of the list. It's thin crust, cut into little squares, and frighteningly addictive (the sausage is my fave). But the style of pizza is not the only unorthodox thing about this place. First of all, it's cash ONLY, so be prepared for that. Also, you have to order your drinks from a separate bar, which is a little funny. Not inconvenient really since you're already paying with cash, but interesting. It's pretty affordable as far as pizza goes. Some locations are better than others, though. The Centerville location is good. The one on Far Hills and Stroop is also not bad, but I think the best location is by the Dayton Mall. It's packed on the weekends and at dinnertime, though, so go early or get carry out. read more

I grew up in Kettering Ohio. I'm 59 years old. Ate Cassano's Pizza since I was born essentially. I used to walk to the tiny Cassano's in Kettering with the neighborhood kids to get Pizza. Mable was the lady who worked there when I was a little kid. Years later Marion's opened. I was told by staff at Cassano's that the owner of Marion's used to work at Cassano's and stole the recipe and opened Marion's. Both restaurants make excellent, almost identical pizza. I have lived in California for the last 30 years and visit family in Dayton every year. I always have to get my Marion's or Cassano's fix. I was just in Dayton 2 weeks ago and ate at both places. This time Cassano's was the winner of my taste test. Got the same variety at each place. Pepperoni, sausage and banana pepper. Cassano's in Centerville was spot on perfect. Marion's in Centerville was not as good as it usually is. There was TOO MUCH pepperoni and sausage, and not enough sauce. And the crust seemed to be not as good as usual too. I was disappointed. Of course I still ate loads of it because I was hungry and had been so psyched to be getting my yearly Marion's fix. But definitely something was off. I've been eating this pizza since I was a toddler. I used to get a classic supreme pizza with sausage. Now I am 21... I don't eat cheese or meat. The best pizza I have ever had. It's a Dayton/St. Louis style with thin crust and big toppings. The slices are cut into little squares. The atmosphere is like an indoor Italian piazza complete with a tree in the middle of the restaurant. There is also a good selection of sodas and beer, including draft beer. Marion's is unique to Dayton. It's a tradition for our family going back 50 years. The pizza quality seems to vary from location to location, and visit to visit. With their coupons, I wonder if they intentionally lean up on the toppings? Love the Mason location, especially the patio. Don't see what all the fuss is about this place. Pizza is pretty good. It's cut into tiny little bite size pieces. Ordered a salad but they don't have Bleu cheese, only Ranch. Not the best I've had. You have to order your drinks separately AFTER you order and pay for your pizza at a totally separate counter. AND.... you don't get refills on your soda. I ordered a small beer and almost died laughing when she put the plastic mug on the countertop. It looked like a dadgum kids glass. There aren't any napkins on the tables. You have go back up to the pizza ordering counter to get those. Oh, and don't forget to ask for plates while you're up there gettin your napkins because they don't ask if you want those either. I had a terrible experience tonight. I have been coming to this Marion's for years and have always had a good experience. Tonight was terrible, first of all they put our pizzas out on the counter and let them get cold as they waited for our streak sandwich to get done. Then when we got the steak sandwich they got the order wrong and I had to take the steak sandwich back. The manager actually asked if he could use the same meat. I looked at him in disbelief and told him no, I said please make it again the way we ordered it. The guy couldn't have been more rude. When the other Manager, the short one, came out to our table with the sandwich my wife complained to him. The Jack ass actually looked at my wife and said "that's your opinion".
