Enjoyed dinner here on a recent Saturday night. We were seated promptly in a busy dining room. Took that as a good sign as the place was full. Our waiter took the drink order and discussed the menu. We ordered Philly cheesesteak with a pasta salad along with 4-cheese ravioli and a garden salad. Both meals were excellent. We ate everything! Price was reasonable. Service was excellent. Place was busy but we never felt slow service. Our table was a booth so it offered more privacy and quieter dining. All went well. If we are back in Gunnison we will certainly stop here again. I found Mario's about 20 years ago and put the number in my phone a couple years later for ordering ahead on the way through town. It's still in there. We wanted to take a break on a long drive, so we sat down inside. We got lucky--no line. Our server was quick to greet us and brought cokes in big glasses with crushed ice. Yes. While we waited on food, I looked around and soaked in the vibe. This is a local's place in the purest sense, but has always felt welcoming, no matter where I'm living. Pizza--and buttered spaghetti w meatball for the younger diner--arrived quickly enough and we dug in. Mario's pizza stands out as "normal" pizza with every ingredient and flavor on point. You'll have to drive a long way to find any on par with Mario's pies. They're in my top three Colorado mountain town pizza joints and I've been to my fair share. The meatball from the kids' spaghetti was moist and tasty--good, not great. Five stars for simple excellence, good service, and the 60-70s pizza joint decor. read more

Next best thing since Gunnison Pizza Company closed down. 3 of us ate a large (16 inch) carnivore combo pizza, 2 draft beers, and iced teas for $52.48. I have been here many times before and sometimes it's really really good, and sometimes it's a little less. But it's usually the former not the latter. Servers are quick and capable. The corner booths are a little cramped, the other booths are a little better. Be aware, place is usually packed at noon and evening times. read more

Meals came with soup or salad ( we enjoyed minestrone) and all their dressings are home made ... My calzone was HUGE! I should have shared !!! And so tasty!! Ended up ordering a pizza called the honey pig. It had a good amount of pork bits and white cheese. The only complaint that I had about the pizza was that it was a tad bit cold. Service was good. The people were friendly. We ordered a meat sampler pizza. The meat included bacon. When the pizza came out, it was warm at best, not hot. Some of the ingredients were burned on the edges, but most of the bacon was absolutely raw. If you can't cook bacon properly, you shouldn't be in the restaurant business. I stopped for a bite to eat before heading to Crested Butte. I looked at the sign that says "Voted best pizza" so I was enticed to try it out. I had the lunch special which included a personal size pizza with a topping of your choice which I opted for the sundried tomatoes, soup or salad, which I opted for the caesar, and a drink; all for $12 and some change. My salad was very tasty, with fresh shavings of parmesan and a good amount of croutons. The dressing was delicious! The pizza is what really fell through. It was not bad but it was not great. I was disappointed that the sundried tomatoes got burnt so I had to pick off all the tops of them. They tack on a fee if you pay with a card so I told the waitress before the food even got to me that I will be paying cash and she said okay not a problem I will make sure it is off credit. She still had that fee on there so I had to let her know and then they add another "fee" without her giving me a heads up for a foundation. read more

While traveling through the area on a Saturday evening, our family wanted pizza and upon checking YELP we decided on Mario's due to the rave pizza reviews. However, we were also concerned about previous reviews of surcharges added for guests with children. We indeed enjoyed very good pizza and attentive service. When we received the bill there was a 3% surcharge to offset CCD fees and a 1% surcharge per child which was explained on the folio as a donation supporting a local kids mentorship program and it could be removed upon request. So delicious and filling. The ambiance is fun too with booths and interesting artwork in the booth (that's also for sale). Had to try their pizza since their known for their pizza! The fancy pig sounded amazing and it was just that good too, a dense pizza. You could also get their specialty pizzas on personal pizza sizes, which my friends did, or they come in medium or large sizes. I was visiting my friend in Gunnison and I said, "Where's a good place for pizza around here?" He said, "Marios is where I always go." You can dine-in, take out, or take and bake. We did take and bake and chose the veggie pizza. There's a choice of regular crust, thin crust, or wheat crust. We went for the wheat crust. As I said, we did take and bake so we walked in and picked it up. It's nice inside if you want to dine in. The staff is very friendly. In addition to pizza, they have pretty much anything else you'd find at an Italian restaurant, also, soup, salads, and burgers, too. The take and bake comes with easy-to-follow directions and it comes with the oven-proof tray for cooking. The toppings were generous and it cooked up just like the easy-to-follow directions said it would. I would not recommend the wheat crust. It's pretty tough. That's not Mario's fault, it's just how wheat crusts are. Go for regular or thin crust and you'll be good to go. Also, Mario's offers free delivery. I'm not sure of the delivery range though. When I told my sister who went to college at the then, Western State, she immediately lit up and had many fond memories of Mario's. Terrible service. We were seated immediately but then sat and waited for 20 minutes before finally walking out. We watched other people come in after us and get served immediately. It has a small town, small business feel to it that just feels homey. The booths are the original booths from when they opened! The pizza was incredible. We ordered a large create your own pizza. We added fresh tomato, roasted garlic, homemade sausage, fresh mozzarella, and artichoke. You could taste all the love and hard work that went into the pizza. Every bite was romance to my taste buds. I also ordered a mini fat boy for dessert. It had homemade ice cream in between two chocolate chip cookies. The entire experience was awesome! My co workers and I decided to try Marios Pizza & Pasta. It was five of us and we requested before giving our orders that each check has to be separate. The waitress stated that they can only do 3 separate checks. She stated she can get an manager and i said thank you. Basically a seasoned waitress came out and stated that she can split the checks no problem. When we deploy we have to itemize separately so there is no issues. I ordered there wings that I found out are baked and when they came to the table they didn't look appetizing at all. I ask if thry can run it thru the broiler or oven. When the wings came back it looks as if they flipped my wings over and brought it back to me. I was not satified. My co worker Myron stated that he would take them. I asked Myron how were the wings lol!! He was like i hoped you wouldn't ask him bjt if so he wasn't going to lie. He stated that the wings had no flavor at all. I wasn't suprised by that statement. I ordered a meduim veggie with sausage replacing tomatoes for roasted garlic. When my pizza came to the table i ask where the sausage at? The waitress stated that they shred thr pork meat so it wont burn in the oven. at this point I can't understand how you don't tell a customer ordering that you shred the pork meat and sprinkle on the pizza. I've never heard anything so ridiculous. I feel as if i paid for sausage damn it let me see my meat. My co workers had the deep dish pizza and they were totally satified with their entrees. My friend Meleane had the calzone she liked it not the best but it satisfied her. Myron had the lasagna he like it the sauce he said had some heat to it but it was good. Joe ordered mozzarella with marinara sauce they enjoyed it. I did order a glass of Sauvignon Blanc it was okay $5.00 house wine. My overall experience at Mario's is pretty much what I expected. I love brick oven pizza, which they don't have. I just feel that when you go to a restaurant the waitress should never bager on with customer if they request separate check grant that request. Also they need to make it clear to customers that aren't locals that when ordering sausage your going to receive crumbled sausage . They should never assume that a customer will be okay with that. Mario's has been in business over 50 years but you have to be prepared when new customers visit. This year's autumn southwestern Colorado leaves trip using Gunnison as home base can only be described as fabulous. We enjoyed dinner for each of our three days in town. The recipes have remained spot-on; the portions large enough to share a salad and an entree; the prices reasonable; the decor easily satisfying the university clientele; the service very prompt and friendly. This place is so nice inside. The booths! That's the thing that surprised me!! They're cute!! A few could fit four and I saw one that managed to squeeze in 6 people. It runs the wall left and right and in the middle are scattered tables. The pizza. This is really good pizza. It folds and it bends and it's definitely a good start with their base : a good crust to hold my toppings. I decided on the personal size. With the Avalanche Sauce. It's a white sauce with a combo of ricotta, parmesan, oregano and garlic. With chicken. This was divine. Extra garlic. Yup! Quick service and even quicker packing of your leftovers. After calling in an hour and a half in advance, we showed up to Mario's and they had us wait 20-30 minutes to be seated. We got seated and didn't receive a drink ofter for another 20 minutes. We then got our drinks. Then we waited another 20 minutes to have our food orders taken. Our food didn't come for an hour plus. People who had just gotten there got food faster than us. The gratuity was much higher than necessary, as the waitress didn't even really check in on us. She never asked us how our food was, which it was mid. The food was ok, not worth the wait, way overpriced, and it also sucked that we could only split the bill in 3 sections. Overall, not great service or food. read more
