I came here for dinner on Saturday and really enjoyed the experience! Waitstaff was friendly and attentive. I had the side Caesar salad which had a really delicious and tangy dressing and crispy croutons. For my main course I tried the chicken marsala. I really appreciated that they had two price options in terms of portion sizes when it came to meat dishes (one 6oz piece or two) - great for me who eats a bit less and my boyfriend who has a bigger appetite. It came in a wonderful wine sauce and with roasted potatoes which were nicely seasoned. Didn't stay for dessert but saw a few walking out and they looked delicious. I also tried a bite of the marinara sauce and thought it was really tasty/had a great flavor. I would love to come back and try a pasta dish! Just moved to Gold Coast and interested in the local spots. Mario's did not disappoint. Service and ambiance were solid. Villa, our waitress, recommended the eggplant parm without hesitation - and for good reason. Excellent dish. My daughter had angel hair pasta with vodka sauce and loves it. We don't want you out of town people here anyways! There are too many touristy restaurants in the Gold Coast neighborhood with bowls of noodles you could swim in. So so so disappointed! I use to go to this place when it first opened 23 years ago. We use to live in the Gold Coast. The place is really festive and pretty! I was there about 15 years ago. We think the world of the owner! His staff was less desirable. We saw the movie Star Wars. I was reading a review on my phone. Apparently my pre school laid down on the booth. A very very rude employee came over to our table and shouted at us that our son had to sit up . He could not lay down. Honestly I get it and would have him sit up. Another group of people were going to sit at the table. He was blocking there seat! I would always move my child. She was so rude to us that it scared me. I felt like I was neglecting my child. I was simply trying to relax for a few minutes and looked forward to our dinner.i informed our waiter of her rudeness and was told that he checked with other people and she was very nice to us. Give me a break! I'm not stupid! I came in to enjoy my dinner not start a war with morons at this place. The salad was decent nothing special. The chicken vesusio was horrible. It left s crappy after taste. It tasted like salty butter and grease. The portions were super small for the price. Never again! The waiter overcharged us for drinks but changed the bill and apologized when he reminded him. Very sloppy and unprofessional! Mario is very nice though! Btw I was very nice and not snotty to the staff. The customers next to our table were wonderful! The majority of people that go here are miserable people with brooms stuck up theirs butts. Very traditional Italian food with an excellent chef. Very comfortabe and laid back. Food and service is excellent. Location just North of the Rush/Division tourist traps. This is where the local neighborhood people go to get great food and service. The bar is "Cheers" and very friendly. They have been in business a long time because they do things nice. read more

TERRIBLE experience at this restaurant. We took our daughter here for her first birthday and were yelled at by the owner because she dropped spaghetti on the floor (which we fully intended to clean up). The owner told us that one year-olds keep their food on the table at his restaurant and then called the busboy over to pack up our remaining food to go. Thank you to the couple next to us who were so shocked and angered that they insisted on picking up our check (totally sweet and unnecessary). If you are looking for good Italian, there are much better restaurants nearby. Try Topo Gigio or Orso's on Wells in Old Town for much better food and a much better experience. read more

I live in the area and I'm a Mario's regular but for good reason. I have dinner here about once a week and I'm always happy with whatever I order and the service is always good too. I love the neighborhood vibe and Mario is always there! And I mean really there - walking around from table to table and working the room non-stop. He's a great guy and he has an amazing ablility to remember names! Last night, I brought a friend visiting from Orlando and we had an amazing dinner. We started with the coconut shrimp appetizer and loved it. The wine list is complete and the wine glasses are the real deal. When we left after dinner, my friend insisted on getting a photo of us an the entrance of the restaurant, by the "mario's" sign. And guess who stepped up to take the shot? Ordered delivery from Mario's Table and we had a nice experience. I had heard good things about this restaurant and wanted to try their pizza. One of the main reasons we ordered here was because they also offered a gluten free pizza crust option. We ordered one regular pizza and one gluten free one and they were both excellent! The man we talked to on the phone to place the order was very knowledgeable and polite. Our food arrived exactly on time and the delivery person was also great. We will definitely be stopping in to eat at the restaurant one day. Oh and their caprese salad and bread is yummy!! read more

This is my first review ever! That being said...this place was worth it! A perfect, authetic Italian joint. I am so excited to bring my boyfriend (who comes from a very large Italian family) here for his birthday! Our waitress was very attentive and the owner was awesome. Cool guy, down to earth and just wanted to make sure we had a great experience. He came over introduced himself and insisted on putting in a Margarita Pizza (amazing and a perfect app..small, very thin, and delicate) for us on the house. He came back and checked in on us later and chatted for a little. Later on the bartender gave us complimentary limonchello drinks to wrap the meal up. This little neighborhood gem is amazing. Arrive a little early so you can sit at the bar and have John make you a drink. Hang out for a bit, chat with John and the other patrons, kick back and relax. When you are ready, the hostess will seat you. You'll most likely see Mario and he'll tell you the Cajun pasta dish is to die for. It is. Not the best atmosphere but it was a week night to their defense. Grilled calamari appetizer is worth the price. Had the seafood diavola for my entree. It was average but I do like that they have half and pull portion options but the price doesn't align to the portion size. Mario just updated his decor and menu, and tweaked the name of the restaurant to Mario's Table. Same great food, same great service. Mario himself is there almost every night, and I guarantee he will come by your table to make sure you are being properly taken care of. The food quality has always been good but I think things have gotten even better with the new menu - Last night I had one of the specials, a baked gnocchi dish with vodka sauce and asiago that was pretty much to die for. My boyfriend and I tried this place on a whim when we were walking around our neighborhood. We were lucky to get the last open table before it got busier. The atmosphere was cozy, but very pleasant. I could immediately sense the family-owned quality Italian feel. I am allergic to gluten and they have many gluten-free options. You can order the gluten-free pasta with any of their pasta dishes. At most restaurants, the GF pasta is typically crumbly and bland, the GF pasta at Mario's was delicious and did not fall apart at all. My boyfriend even tried it and loved it! (he is NOT allergic to gluten) They also offer GF pizza that I am very excited to try! The menu prices were extremely reasonable for Chicago, especially so close to the Goldcoast. After seeing the prices, I was expecting small portions, however this was NOT the case. The portions were huge with more than enough to make me full and take home leftovers for a second dinner the following night. Mario, the owner, was there taking out food orders and checking on tables. Before we got our food, he came over to our table, introduced himself, and asked how we heard about the restaurant. After talking for a few minutes and telling him that I was GF he told me about all their gluten free options. After we finished eating, he came back to our table and asked me how I liked the GF noodles (he even remembered my name). Will DEFINITELY keep coming back to Mario's! read more

A hidden gem tucked away in a condo building. Excellent food with a diverse, yet manageable menu. Wine selection has a good variety of types and prices. Went with a party of 4, all of our meals were excellent. Service was very good. Discounted parking in a garage across the street made parking easy but there is some on street parking available also. Skip the chains and go to Mario's but you'll need reservations, or you can sit at the bar. We returned to Mario's not to be disappointed. EVERYTHING was wonderful and sooo delicious. We felt like we were back in Italy. Amy, our server, gave outstanding and friendly service. She even brought us serving utensils (without us asking) so that we could share each other entrees! Wine was excellent. It's like going to a neighborhood restaurant. Most people walk here. We walked because we weren't too sure about parking, but looks like Hotel Indigo nearby has a parking lot. Also there are a lots a few blocks south of Division and you can walk over. On the street parking, if you're really lucky. The best, best, BEST is the calamari combo appetizer. i've lived in this neighborhood for almost 4 years now and have been to mario's at least 3 times a month since living in the neighborhood. a friend of mine gave me a list of places around me that were in walking distance since i didn't have a car. mario's has become my go to place to take out of town guest. the place i go when i just want a glass of wine at the bar. the staff is amazing, kind and knows what they are talking about. i never actually pick my own entree; i always have them pick and i'm never disappointed. my go to fav is the linguini and clams, spaghetti and meatballs, any ravioli on the menu and the estancia cabernet. and to top all this off...mario is actually there every night. there isn't a table that comes in that he doesn't converse with. and to me...that's gold. good work mario! no wonder you've been a stable in the neighborhood for so long. go now people!! go now!! read more

I wanted to like this place so much. Service was great. Very attentive and pleasant. We ordered: Side Cesar which was good. Baked Cavatelli with Sausage, it was terrible. The sauce had no flavor and the pasta was mush. Really disappointing. The Cheese Ravioli á la Vodka Sauce had much more flavor than the Cavatelli but it was nothing special. With the price point and so many better options close by we will not be coming back. read more

Read some really great reviews, but was disappointed recently. Came out for date night and we ordered calamari (which was great) salmon and chicken alfredo. The salmon was decent, but nothing too special. The fettuccine was really light and barely noticeable. I was disappointed overall as the bill was close to 90 bucks and I was still hungry when I left. I traveled to Chicago hoping to get a memorable chicago Italian dinner. And I would have fared better at olive garden. read more
