Very long overdue review..oops hehe. So my mom & I first tried to get a seat around 1 pm on a Saturday with no reservation. Sadly, it was booked until 4, but no worries! We were not on a time crunch, so we just shopped around while we waited. I've been here once before, but I forgot how lovely the view is! Nice ambience & live music ~ so peaceful. All the food we got was pretty good; I'd say my favorite was the truffle fries!! The dip for the fries is delicious. I will 100% always order truffle fries if they are on a menu lol. I took off a star because their drinks were not that good haha..I got a yuzu chuhai & it was kinda strong. Normally when I get chuhai it's more on the sweeter side & the shochu is very subtle. My friends and I decided to eat at this restaurant as we heard the food, ambiance, and live entertainment were great during sunset. However, we didn't realize it turned into a lounge after a certain time. So we were a little disappointed in the menu. It was very limited (which is why I'm docking one star from my review - I probably should have read more before coming here). But overall, everything else was great. We even ended the dinner with a free firework show in which the staff dimmed the lights of the restaurant so everyone was able to see the show better. As for the food, I was very satisfied with my entree (garlic shrimp), most of what I wanted was on the menu that wasn't available. However, my other entree (Kiwi smoked pork chop), was very bland and the meat was quite chewy almost like it was overcooked. My boyfriend enjoyed his corn chowder though, and it was extremely flavorful. I will attempt going to Mariposa on another day (not during sunset). But would still recommend for anyone looking for a lounge-ish ambiance during this hour! read more

This is my friends and my go to restaurant for delicious lunch or special occasions. Let's start with the consume and popover! I can eat only those two things and be so happy. But my favorite is the beet salad or something hearty the ochasuke salmon or pork chops. Make sure you leave room for their delicious desserts. The staff are amazing and fun! Came here for our high school reunion luncheon. It was the perfect venue and they handled the orders for 20 guests without a hitch. The staff was awesome- got our orders out and often checked to see if we needed anything else. Kudos to the kitchen staff, servers and manager! The view of Ala Moana beach was so pretty too. I had the chicken Milanese. It was very good- the chicken was tender, with a nice tomato sauce. Others had the Mariposa burger which was a wagyu beef with cheddar cheese surprisingly served alone, no fries. But those who ordered it said it was very good. Those who had the lobster really liked it. Was loaded with lobster meat on butter toasted bread. And can't leave without mentioning those popovers! Nice, light and eggy, yum! But I think they were a little too brown, IMO. The dining space was nice, open and airy with high ceilings and fans. It had a nice ambiance, perfect for bringing out of town guests. read more

Updating my review. I finally got a call back from Alan who apologized for the lengthy wait and miscommunication with the staff. I never had this problem before with Mariposa. It was too late and I already made reservations elsewhere. I appreciate him telling me to check in with him next time I plan to dine there. I hope they can improve on the reservation process for larger parties. I will definitely continue to dine here. The service is great, staff attentive to your needs. The food is excellent, meals presented beautifully. They are the only place that serves complimentary pop overs with strawberry butter. Service was quick and quite attentive. Usually, the restaurant servers ignore us b/c we speak Chinese. I didn't mention this type of encounters in the reviews since the food should be the focal point. Nonetheless, I brought it up here b/c our server paid attention to us. I was impressed. The food was great and I like my seared ahi salad. The rare seared ahi paired well with the oriental dressing and the greens. I tried the laksa seafood curry and it was really good. The salmon & other fish fillets simmered tenderly. The curry was a little spicy and flavored just right and it went perfectly with the rice. My child's meal was actually good, too. We eat at mariposa for all our occasions. Food is great. I have an outstanding error on my card. I call them multiple times and they call me that they will fix the issue but never did. Mariposa is always so consistent. I've dined here countless time and today after another wonderful lunch, I realized that I've never been disappointed. The food is always freshly prepared and the drinks crisp and refreshing. Lunch is a small menu but offers enough to accommodate different tastes. And the service is always so good! Big kudos to whomever does the hiring! Today we were served by Hoku, and we could not have asked for more. He was attentive and kind, and he offered great menu suggestions! A nice young local guy, he exemplified service with true aloha... not the manufactured stuff you sometimes come across these days. Totally genuine. Located on the 3rd floor of Neiman Marcus Ala Moana. This was my first time and finally eating here! We came for a small retirement party and there were maybe a few other people at the bar and another family at a table. Servers were attentive and patient. The pop over with the butter were delicious. I ordered the Laksa Curry which had some clams, a scallop, a few shrimp and pieces of salmon. This laksa didn't have noodles, it comes with a side of rice. I felt it was lacking some heat and flavor, I'm sorry, I've had better. My friends got the pork chop which they say was tender and delicious. My friends and I were looking for a spot to celebrate their birthday lunch and figured Mariposa would be nice since it has a nice open air seating area overlooking Ala Moana Beach and with Covid still being around, we figured that it was a "safe" bet. Not to mention the live music is always a nice touch. They're located on the 3rd level of Ala Moana Shopping Center in Neiman Marcus. There is an abundance of free parking in the lot right behind Neiman Marcus. I made reservations quite easily on Open Table and was able to even list my girlfriends birthdays. Our server was pretty good and attentive. They started off our lunch with their infamous popover with strawberry butter. My friends and I didn't care for the airy popovers cause they tasted like bread crusts which I hate, so we kindly skipped the popovers. They also brought out a complimentary tiny cup of consommé, which we thought was a nice bougie touch lol. I got the Lobster Club sandwich which had slices of bacon and avocado in it which was served with a tiny salad. The lobster club tasted alright, but I definitely didn't think it was worth the $37 price tag. Wish they showed the current price for the dish on the menu instead of listing it as "market price". My friend ordered the pork chops which came out slightly pink. Per the server that cut of pork can be slightly pink, but to be safe she had them cook it well done. We also ordered the ahi poke which was small in portion and underwhelming for $27z They did give us several complimentary desserts for my 3 girlfriends birthdays, which was nice cause we got to try out two diff things as well as some vanilla ice cream. Unfortunately, most of the dishes were slightly forgettable for the price. If you want a nice spot for a shower it might be a good spot since it is semi outdoors, but I probably won't be returning as the food wasn't very memorable for the price point. read more

With the entrance on the ocean side you can't miss the glass doors that leads to the elevators and into the restaurant. I have never been and always wanted to try it. I know they're known for their pop overs also and if I'm not mistaken, their lobster sandwich (can't remember) but my other half surprised me with dinner here along with my family. At night it seems more on the semi quieter side...I say this because we were seated next to a table of ladies living their best life as well as celebrating a birthday so they were laughing, drinking and enjoying each other's company (love it, cheers to you beautiful souls) Service was amazing!!!! Very attentive to us and making sure everything was great and was very apologetic about the noise, but I didn't mind at all. AMAZING!!! We came here after receiving a 100 gift card for their joining international program at around 5:30. We ordered some drinks off the happy hour menu and Kawai gave us some popovers with strawberry butter to start. We were able to watch the sunset from the balcony! Stuff we ordered: Soup of the day, seafood chowder was amazing. Petite loco moco (HH): pretty good size for happy hour Miso kampachi: this was AMAZING! I loved every part of this dish! It's a must try. Our servers were great!!! My dad kept talking about how much he loved the popovers the whole time and so after we finished our first one, they asked if we wanted a second one. At the end of our meal, we realized our certificate excluded alcoholic drinks, tax, and gratuity and so we were looking to spend some more. We chatted with one of our servers, Raymond about what desserts to maybe take away for breakfast the next morning and Kawai was so nice and packed us SIX POP OVERS WITH THE BUTTER! When closing our bill, Raymond noticed we didn't meet the limit for our certificate and asked us to order more food which I thought was nice for him to be looking out for us. Happy Hour at Mariposa In Honolulu... When Dan O. suggested that we check out the Happy Hour menu at the restaurant on the top level of Neiman Marcus at the Ala Moana Shopping Center, I quickly agreed. Dan O. learned about this relatively new menu through the Frolic Hawaii email. I haven't been to Mariposa in a while. They're known for their popovers. However, we were served complimentary buttery warm Monkey Bread and a slightly tart, sweetly fruity Strawberry Guava whipped butter... yum! Dan and I shared the Lobster Club Sandwich. It was brought to the table on two separate plates, filled with Furikake fries, and two quarters of the Lobster Club Sandwich. The sandwich had chunks of lobster meat, roasted tomatoes, avocado, and BACON! The combination was absolutely delicious! I had an Iced Tea (pineapple) sorbet float. The sorbet gave a slight sweetness to the iced tea. After it was gone, I was able to get refills of plain iced tea! Thank you! Overall, service was very good! Water glasses were kept full and more napkins were brought to us. The free parking and convenient modern restroom were additional bonuses! This place is fantastic - one of my favorite lunch spots on the island. It has a great ambiance, delicious food, and exceptional service. Reservations are usually needed (it's pretty busy even around 2pm on a weekday). Our server Kawai was very attentive, had great recommendations, and really made the meal a fantastic experience. We got the pork chop & steak salad, and when we mentioned we'd be splitting, they plated half of each dish to put in front of each of us. The portions were so large that at first, we didn't even realize it was half! Both the steak & Pork chop were super tender & delicious. My hubby and I felt like being total snobs and cruised on over here on a Sunday afternoon after shopping at Ala Moana. Place was so packed and was a 40 minute wait for a table. At the bar, however, was immediate seating. We were the only ones sitting at the bar. Yeah, this place is pricey but what do you expect at Neiman Marcus seriously? But the fine details is what had me impressed! The bread they serve with the lilikoi or guava butter was a nice touch with the consumme! The bread is not that tasty but the butter is delicious. We had 2 glasses of Zinfandel $15/each with some hurricane fries $8 (maybe the cheapest thing on the menu), ahi sashimi $24 and the tagliatelle $25 which they split into two for us since we were sharing. I gotta say the tagliatelle was perfectly al dente with the right amount of bolognese sauce! I couldn't get enough of it! I instantly regretted ordering the hurricane fries because I was beginning to get full. I will come back here again, enjoyed the sunny, ocean view and we ofcourse had excellent service. You also get these wonderfully wrapped minty chocolate treats at the end of your meal. Nice touch! read more

My bankers took me to lunch here and I enjoyed the food and service so much that I took my family out for a girls lunch. Unfortunately it was not the same experience. Tables seated after us got their food first. Our food came out cold. My 5 year old didn't realize she didn't get a coloring sheet and crayons until kids on some other table did. Took forever to clear our used plates to make room for the entrees. The waiter said the kitchen was short staffed but that didn't really explain why our food was cold. All in all disappointed with how different our experience was just dining as a local family versus dining with my business and personal bankers. Most times we check out fine dining restaurants for dinner, but in this case we are here for lunch. After being closed for some time, we were excited to see what Mariposa had to offer. Reservations were made using OpenTable. We showed up a few minutes ahead of our call time and then immediately sat us and offered us water and menus. We quickly settled on cocktails as we perused the other parts of the menu. Popovers with the strawberry butter and chicken consommé started the meal. It was crispy on the outside, a bit eggy - but completely delicious. It's not purple. It's actually a beautiful brown, but between the lighting and my inability to fix it. It was a choice between making it look purple or like poop. Lol. Purple-ish it is. Corn chowder was delicious, nice chunks of potato. Nice corn flavor with focaccia croutons for a textural bready component. I got the Saturday special of the shaved prime rib dip on a split open popover with fries. I wasn't sure how to eat it - normally a dip type sandwich I could hold and physically dip into an au jus. I couldn't necessarily do that with this so I used a knife and fork. Beyond that little snafu, I enjoyed it. The prime rib was cooked well and seasoned nicely. The fries were tasty, freshly cooked, and a complement to the heartiness of the prime rib. Of course - dessert! This was an avocado chocolate pudding with fresh fruit, crispy chocolate chip cookie, and pistachio praline. Yum. The pudding itself was thick and smooth. It was dark, well balanced between the sweetness and deep bittersweet chocolate notes. The fresh fruit helped to add some acidity while the cookie and pistachios added a welcomed crunch. All in all, I'd like to come back. The service was great and the ambiance was easy and unpretentious. read more

Vegan options are very limited, I had the soy sesame roasted beet bowl which I will say was excellent. My only wish is that they offered more vegan options. We got greeted right away and though there were no tables available, they offered us to sit on the bar. It was great sitting there and the bartender or server was so nice and attentive. My family and I were visiting from California and had to carefully choose the places we wanted to eat at. I chose Mariposa as our very first place to dine after we landed because of the great reviews. Everything was excellent! Joey was our server and he did a great job and took good care of us. We were all given complimentary popovers with strawberry butter to start as well as a small mug of chicken broth. Both were delicious and a nice way to start off our meals. I ordered the Lobster Club and was really looking forward to it, but didn't enjoy it as much because the lobster meat tasted as if it was previously frozen (which is why I gave this place four stars instead of five.). My hubby LOVED the Mango BBQ Pulled Pork and said it was the BEST he has ever had. My daughter really enjoyed her pasta, but my son didn't care for the chicken tenders. Each of the kids meals came with complimentary gelato and a warm Neiman Marcus cookie. I will give this place another try, but will order something different next time. read more

We were anticipating the reopening for a long time and I was so excited to be able to take my husband for lunch in his birthday. Atmosphere is still nice. Casual and quiet. Staff is friendly and efficient. However, the food is definitely not what we remember and not really worth the price anymore. The popovers are of course to die for with the wonderful whipped fruit butter. I had the crab salad and my husband had the steak frites. Both were a bit disappointing. I had bits of shell in my crab and it was so dry. My husband's steak was so small and really overcooked. Not what we would expect from Mariposa. Hopefully it's just a reopening hiccup. Maybe we will try again in a few months but I hope they work on the quality of the food because for the price, it wasn't worth it. read more

This may be our tenth visit here but sadly our last. We waited for more than 20 minutes to just get a glass of water. More than half the tables were empty. Very weak, small lemon drop drink. Beer glass was 2/3 full and half foam. I've often ordered the lobster roll. It's now 1/2 size with few lobster chunks. It almost tasted as if it had tuna for filler in lots of mayo. Yuck! Chopped salad was just okay. We won't be back. Very sad to end this tradition. read more

I know that Mariposa has been around for many years but my wife and I went for the first time to celebrate Valentine's on the 15th of Feb. for lunch. We were anticipating the famous popovers that my wife and I have never tasted before. We had reservations and opted for a balcony table since the weather was cool, and it was the best option because it gets noisy int the restaurant at peak lunch time. The service here is very attentive and the servers are knowledgable. I chose the roast duck and a Maui Brewing Company Bikini Blonde beer, and my wife opted for their plantation iced tea and the kid's spaghetti. We were promptly served the popovers with strawberry whipped butter. We had never had them before. To tell you the truth, I thought the popover would be a little more crispy. They were served cooled and the strawberry butter was delicious. I even had a second popover which was actually cooler than the last. I really enjoyed them but I couldn't help but wonder how they would taste hot. The roast duck leg and the artichoke, potato, pea and bacon side was delicious, I would order this again. I tasted my wife's spaghetti and I thought the flavors were excellent, it seems like a simple dish but the flavors really standout. Her meal came with a tossed salad that I ate and I thought the dressing was too runny and too tart. We took home their 4 pack of crispy chocolate chip cookies and enjoyed them immensely. Chicken soup was really salty and not warm (home made comforting feeling) like before). They changed my favorite the lobster club. The bread is a sweet bread now. It didn't go together in my opinion. Lobster was clean, but needed maybe butter or more mayo? Something to liven it up. Not worth 40$. I was excited to try their special sold out with in 2 hours of opening waiter said. Service was ok. After being closed for more than a year due to the pandemic, Mariposa at Neiman Marcus Ala Moana officially reopened on Saturday, June 12, 2021. The menu is not as extensive as it was, with only four entrees, however the view, service and popovers are as wonderful as ever. For our appetizer, we got the Mariposa Poke, which was expensive but delicious. Our mains were the Chicken Sausage Pasta and Blackened Ahi. The pasta was good, however it was extremely rich and I could only finish half of it. The Blackened Ahi was excellent and we would definitely get that again. Dessert was two orders of affogato (sorry I wasn't sharing mine LOL). It came with NM's famous chocolate chip cookies, which unfortunately were not good, but the affogato itself was very good and made with Illy espresso. All in all it was a good lunch and since we had an InCircle coupon we paid only $40 instead of $140 (remember to tip on the non-discounted amount). I'm glad they are open again and we are planning on going back soon. read more
