Remodel July 2026- Kahala Sushi seating
    Ric C.

Zippys Kahala reopened to the public after an extensive 4 month remodeling and repair on July 7, 2026. The main dining room seems more spacious and the lighting is brighter. General layout is about the same just new and nicer touches. The takeout lockers which are already being used by other locations are a welcome addition. The food is what you would expect and to their credit, they are experimenting with their offerings. Because this is their first week, there's bound to be some hiccups. When by to pick up some take out kau kau- everything ok except the turkey noodle soup (which we like) had only a small string sliver of turkey in it. End of the day portion? Not sure what would be a good way of checking but beware when ordering that soup. Parking after 5:30 can be problematic. You might have to play a little bit of musical chairs if you go prime time, especially these early first month or so. All the Kahala Zippys regulars are happy they are back and open. Welcome back to the 'hood Kahala Zippys.

Zippy's Kahala finally re-opened!   It felt like forever but they said it was only closed for 4 months.  That tells you how much we missed going to Zippys Kahala!    We went yesterday to check it out - about 2 weeks after it reopened.   For me, the first things I noticed was the new color theme.  It went from darker colors to a nice beige and light blue color theme with new beige seats and the light blue picture wall in the back.  The new color theme made it feel more open and inviting.   I liked it!   They also put table seating in the previously open area in the center.    More tables, more customers! We were seated immediately and lucky enough to get Eunmi as our server.  She's one of the servers that remembers you when you come in.  The three of us sat down and the first thing she did after getting us menus was bring us all hot green tea that my mom always requests.   I was impressed she did that without even being asked.   That's service -- she remembered!!   Something that I did notice was Eunmi and the other servers were running around like crazy.  They had to seat, take order, serve, bus tables, do refills, cash you out..... while customers keep coming in one after the other.   They definitely don't have enough staff.   I felt very sorry for the servers.  As I mentioned, they were literally running back and forth between the tables and the kitchen area. Between the three of us, we ordered 1 tempura udon and 2 chef's specials.  The chef's special came with udon, tempura, and nigiri sushi.    The udon was served hot (which I love) and the noodles were al dente!   The only thing I didn't care for was the dashi had a slightly sweet taste.  I remember it being the usual udon (katsu boshi dashi) but this time it was a little different.   The tempura was good -- nice and crunchy!   It came with 2 shrimp, kabocha, and a carrot.   I think the only thing that was missing was the daikon to put in the tempura sauce.  They also don't have togarashi for the kick I always enjoy.   The nigiri had ebi, tamago, salmon with onion, and maguro.    They enjoyed it and said it was good. Now for something that made me go  "HUUUMMMM??"    I noticed they automatically added a 2% kitchen charge to the bill (see picture).    On the receipt it states "Kitchen Charge helps recruit and retain our highly trained back-of-house staff and support a sustainable compensation policy."   Instead of adding the 2% kitchen charge, why don't they pay their staff a rate that will allow them to retain and recruit good staff.  Why embed these extra charges into the customer's bill. Maybe we'll try the new locker system they installed for take-out.   We tried it at Waimalu Zippys and really love it.

Renovations are finished at Zippy's Kahala. On Waialae Avenue across from Kuono Marketplace. It is a two story building with parking underneath. There is sushi bar and a dining area on the mauka side. Dine-in area is on the makai end. This week also saw the release of digital deals in Zippy's proprietary app. I got the Spaghetti with Meat Sauce, which I customized and subbed with no-bean chili. For $12, it was a solid bargain. Open from 600a till midnight.

The service was very welcoming. We had breakfast for dinner. Nice pancakes, but not sure the cook understands "over medium ", but a good meal. I liked the redesigned decor, but the lights were painfully bright!

Mom likes this location because it's easy to park and take the elevator up. Tried their Japanese food for the first time. 2 item teishoku w tempura and butterfish. Tempura was good. Butterfish has a thick sweet miso glaze that was a little too much

After attending an event in Kaimuki three of us decided to check out the newly-renovated Zippy's in Kahala. This was about 6:15pm. When we arrived at the parking lot we were lucky enough to find a space because the lot was packed. Once we got upstairs there were groups of folks waiting for their tables so we signed in on their QR code to get a place in line. While we waited, we noticed the woman who was checking the waitlist was also the one who took the divider between booths and checking on other things. She was hustling and looking exhausted. As she sat some of the parties at their tables we noticed a considerable amount of booths that were empty: some that had been cleared of dirty dishes and some not. There was an absence of bussers so when the servers had a minute between their usual duties, they bussed the tables, sprayed them down and put on their server hats again. In the meantime, groups kept coming in and we finally had to ask when we were to be seated. We were next. One thing I did notice on the positive side is that no one was getting upset having to wait for a table, or seeing so many empty booths. That is ALOHA When we finally sat down (next to a window) we put in our order with a lovely server named Chels. Sweet girl and very accommodating and apologetic because she was relatively new, but very professional considering the situation. We ordered our food. Two of us ordered Japanese, which meant the orders would have to be fulfilled at the Sushi Bar down the hall (different kitchen from the main Zippy's). My Spicy Salmon Bowl was beautifully arranged with very spicy salmon, egg, and ginger, with sushi rice underneath. My friend had a beautiful bento (specific name & description in the photo). Unfortunately, the sauce that went with the Shrimp Tempura was cold & the rice was missing. When the rice did come, it wasn't Japanese (Calrose). It all tasted delicious, however, despite the setbacks. Would we return? Maybe if we give them some time to get the staff they need we might. It's a lovely place but just not well organized at this time.

Spotted the BOGO plate app deal and couldn't say no to a free meal! Keiko saimin, regular Teri beef and regular chicken katsu coming to a total of $22 was an absolute steal (especially these days). All the food was hot, fresh and delicious. Service was warm and friendly and loved the refresh of the Kahala store.

This is my favorite Zippys location. The food is always good. There are so many amazing options. The Korean friend chicken plate with a won ton min is one of my go to orders. Even the pancakes are delicious and fluffy. The staff is so friendly and attentive. I will always come back here.

We were so excited that Zippy's Kahala finally reopened!! Unfortunately I think our expectations were too high for opening day. We went at 5 o'clock when it wasn't too busy. Our waitress was Annette. She took our order, but the coffee TOOK FOREVER!!! I mean I ate my large soup before I got my coffee!! I was debating on canceling my coffee because it was taking so long. I think they had to roast the beans or something. The food took a while also. My french fries weren't fresh. They were OKAY, but they weren't fresh. My fried chicken was good. Our oxtail soup took a while also. When we got it, it was lukewarm AND the choi sum was COLD!! I mean cold like CHILLED!! Not even warm like the oxtail soup. When another table got their oxtail soup, I could see the steam coming from the soup, and I asked the customer if their oxtail soup was hot, and she said it was, but their choi sum was also chilled cold. WTH! So we asked Annette to heat up our oxtail soup and she did. Oxtail soup was good, but the service for the day SUCKED!! I'm assuming it was because they were exhausted being the opening day. When we paid, Annette smiled and apologized to the customer before me for the poor service, but when I went to pay, she gave me a real sour face! WTH!! Hahaha!! I'm local Asian, the customer before me was local white. Go figure. Our bill with tip came out to $75 for 2 people. OUCH!! I think Annette catered to other customers and not us. It was crazy!! I have never been treated like this from a local person....being that I'm local as well. Hahaha!! Next time we go, we will ask for a different table that isn't Annette's. Hahaha!!

This Zippys just completed a major renovation being closed for a few months. They have reopened for about 2 weeks now and I decided a weekday after the lunch rush would be good time for a visit. WRONG! There was about 6 to 7 parties ahead of us at 1:30 pm on a monday. They still have a scan barcode to check in to the table wait list. Trouble is that many patrons walk in and interrupted the hostess seating tables to take their names. On this afternoon, I understood that they only had two servers show up for work. The hostess was seating people but she really had no urgency in doing so. She would stop at other tables and have long conversations all the while the list of waiting diners was growing. After checking in on scan amd waiting 15 minutes, we just left as it was very difficult to watch the inefficient process they had to seat customers. I hope they can improve this situation in the future after this disappointment.

Zippy's Kahala is great. Loads of parking on two levels. Lower level is covered and there are stairs and an elevator to get customers upstairs. For a holiday, it was very easy to order snd pick up my breakfast order. I was a little worried I wouldn't find parking. Clearly posted signs for paid and unpaid phone order pick ups. Plenty of staff on standing by to assist customers and answer any questions. The bakery case was well stocked with pastries, cakes and pies. Any sweets needed for the Christmas morning breakfast feast ahead. Everything looked delicious. I was so captivated, I completely forgot to order the gin dui. ‍ The fried rice was so soft and very flavorful and the Portuguese sausage was perfectly cooked. Not burnt and not just "kissed" by the pan. The spam was a bit overdone, and a little crisp which is easy to do when cut thinly. I know to customize my breakfast order next time.

I saw a post where this lady mentioned her new favorite menu item was the lemon chicken. I love lemon chicken but it's so hard to find good lemon chicken. I used to love L&L but they kept overcooking the chicken. I had high hopes for Zippy's lemon chicken ($15.50) but was so disappointed. The pieces were fatty and not crispy; it's ok if they decided to make their version a non-crispy version, but this one seemed to be their Korean chicken without sauce. The worse part was the lemon sauce--was like a thick lemon gel cake frosting. I tried to eat the chicken nuggets with bbq sauce instead but the texture didnt work. There's just something amiss about it. None of my family members cared for it either, and it's hard for a chinese family to waste food. Also tried the turkey plate ($19.15). Turkey and gravy tasted okay but the stuffing was just mush. Guess nice not having to chew. Was disappointed in how little turkey there was for the price. May look like a lot, but they were small pieces--like the end or scraps. Also ordered the $9.99 spaghetti plate special which seemed to have only about 2/3 the amount than before. I need to try this order again to see if quantity really did decrease permanently. But on the plus side, tried the $15.95 Wrecking Crew pac which was a fun combo of chili, a chicken, Portuguese sausage, and a fish. This would be an awesome permanent addition to the menu. And as always, love the friendly staff.

    Checking out this nice eatery.

And we just can't go here anymore unless changes are made! We used to prefer them over Zippy's, but now they are less than 7-Eleven quality, while charging higher-end prices for the neighborhood. We have given them many chances, hoping it was just a fluke, but we have repeatedly been disappointed. Their chicken has become chewy and fatty, their rice is mediocre, and condiments such as mayonnaise are stripped down to the bare minimum quantity. Chile is poured so lightly that it is practically a minuscule amount. And their prices have continued to rise. I don't know if greedy people took over the restaurant who just don't care anymore, or what is going on. I remember when I used to take people here, and they would be impressed with the quality and quantity--plates just heaping with good cuts of meat, noodles, and rice. Those days are no more. As they say in Japan, the price performance is poor. Furthermore, their staff is rude. I can only imagine it was an owner working this day because it was a face I haven't seen that often. An older gentleman who appeared to be of Okinawan descent, working the cashier register, accosted us because I was privately discussing with my family about splitting different items with them. We were all ordering something, so he wasn't losing any money, but he told us about how prices are double in Waikīkī. First of all, it is rude to interrupt your customers that way. Secondly, we don't go to Waikīkī or care about Waikīkī. What happened to serving the locals? Third, Waikīkī has an assortment of restaurants, prices, and qualities, and they shouldn't be how you base your services. Lastly, I guarantee I could find a better deal in Waikīkī if I wanted to. Next time you're in the area, just go get a $6 bento or a $5 burrito from 7-Eleven next door. I assure you, the price performance and experience will be better. If Rainbow Drive-In is in the business of comparing themselves to other things, let's compare them to 7-Eleven and at least try to be better than them, right? I can get mochiko chicken from 7-Eleven for $6.99 that is similar in portion size and better quality. Meanwhile, they are serving their fatty, dry chicken for $16.75. Highway robbery! And they are not fancy, with their dirty picnic tables and plastic cutlery. They are just a step above a food truck, if that. Save yourself from the hype. They have gone downhill like a landslide. Go elsewhere.

This place is absolutely the worsttttt On every thing, I…read morewould give it 0 stars but they get 2 bc it's clean (mostly bc no one is ever in the restaurant) and the food is usually good. *** edit- although the overall store rating is a 2, the 2 (TWO) workers that are managing the restaurant are doing great, friendly, BUSY, but doing their very best so this review is in NO WAY a reflection of those employees! Maybe the "higher ups" should actually support them so the reviews won't be so low. Ty to the manager for reaching out below but the survey is so generalized I don't think it will reach the correct people and I do not want those particular employees penalized. The 2 is for the extremely SLOW service, orders are generally wrong, something is missing and it takes SOOOOOOOO LONG to get your order. I thought I would beat the drive thru but nope, I'm currently standing here waiting for my order that I placed after parking my car to get out of the long line. *I've been in here at 20min. And the car I was behind in the drive thru is still IN THE DRIVE THRU.

She's always working the night shift and has such a great attitude, which honestly stands out even more considering there are only TWO people running the entire place. She let us know upfront that there would be a bit of a wait, which we appreciated, and we still ordered because it's one of the only spots open late. It seems like management knows they're open later than other fast food places and still only staffs the bare minimum... which feels unfair to the employees. Eliza was taking orders, making food, and handling everything with patience and positivity. When we left, there was a long line of at least 8 cars -- all for just two workers to handle. That's kind of crazy. This isn't a complaint about the staff at all -- they're doing an amazing job. If anything, it's a call for management to either hire more people for the night shift or pay these workers more. They're clearly working extremely hard and deserve better support.

I really wanted a caramel sundae. I had already gone to one McDonald's in search of ice cream and…read morein the time it took me to walk from my home to that location, they turned off ordering for any ice cream products, so I came here. I went through the drive-through and the first thing they asked is if I would be using the app to order. That's weird. Why would I use the app to order in the drive-through? I came drive-through to talk to a human being. I asked for a caramel sundae and one for my husband too. The worker tells me my total and I pull forward and pay. I go to the second window. The worker there hands me two paper cups with just ice cream in them. I said, "I'm sorry but I asked for caramel sundaes." The worker said, "This is a plain sundae." What the heck is a plain sundae? A sundae, by definition, is ice cream with a topping on it, usually fudge or chocolate, sometimes strawberry or caramel. A sundae has toppings. I learned that at McDonald's, "plain sundae" is something you can order and it's just a cup of soft serve. In any case, I didn't order a plain sundae, I ordered a caramel sundae. The worker yelled something back to the first person who I had ordered from, then topped the ice creams with some caramel and handed them back to me. At least the price is the same for a "plain sundae" and caramel or chocolate versions, so I didn't have to pay the difference. Also, I gotta say, McDonald's really is practicing shrinkflation, as the last time I got a caramel sundae when it used to be in the plastic cups, it sure seemed like a lot more ice cream and a lot more caramel. This little paper cup of ice cream isn't really worth the price.

(Tookout 04/22/26 WE @ 7:00pm): No raised fingers given at this chicken coop!…read more In my quest to continue exploring the various cuisine scenes as well as other businesses throughout O'ahu's Windward side, specifically the neighborhood of Hawaii Kai (southeast shore of the island), I ventured into Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers as my first time to ever try their food after I've seen them all over the place on the Mainland. I was always down for a juicy succulent piece of fried chicken however it was fed to me. It wasn't the healthiest way to eat chicken, but things fried just tasted better, correct!? Founded in 1996 on the campus of LSU by Todd Graves and named after a friend's Labrador Retriever (Raising Cane), his arduous dream that began in college has since grown into one of the fastest grown restaurant brands in the U.S. Would I raise a thumb's up instead of a middle finger to their tender chicken!? PURCHASE(S) 3pc Chicken Fingers Sandwich ($8.79): This messy two-hander was slipping and sliding all over the place as I tried to keep it together (I failed). Three crispy crunchy thick pieces of chicken between a pillowy soft sweet bun with a smear of Cane sauce and a hint of lettuce, this was a lovely introduction to this brand's food, and I now understood the hype that surrounded it. Aesthetics aside, you could've easily eaten this as fingers and a side of bread, but this large sandwich did the job. My only wish was that it was spicy and came with pickle chips, but it was still ono! https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&start=72&select=sod8F8j7AIUDoK3mQptIUw The Box Combo - 4pc Chicken Fingers, Crinkle-Cut Fries, Texas Toast, Coleslaw, Cane Sauce, 22floz Drink ($12.79): Because of my sandwich, I was able to split this meal into two! Loaded with a little bit of everything, the chicken was just as yummy as my sandwich, there were plenty of spud sticks with a light dusting of seasoning, the toast was a revelation all on its own and would easily order a few more as a snack, the coleslaw lacked flavor (I put some on my sandwich instead), the Cane sauce add a touch of zing but wished it was spicy, and the sweet tea was like I was transported to the South it was so damn good and probably loaded with a ton of sugar. A heck of a meal at a deal! https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&start=72&select=f5GUo39r6DcCdVAVoN-ArA SERVICE I was greeted by a young woman at the front counter where I immediately placed my order, received my cup to fill with my fountain drink of choice, and within five minutes my name was called as we caught each other's eyes while I waited nearby. Everything was good - mahalo! PARKING (FREE; N/A this instance): Located in the outdoor Hawaii Kai Towne Center, there were plenty of spots although I decided to do the 25-minute one-way walk for exercise - 'nuff said! ATMOSPHERE, DÉCOR, AMBIENCE A standard quick-service restaurant layout with a central order counter, a fountain drink machine off to the side, plenty of dining spots in a spacious room, and minimal decorations with some interesting elements such as these ceiling disco balls https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&start=72&select=Ruk3zzf-dWb0pTPXWIWt6Q (I didn't know if they actually worked). Plenty of natural lighting came in through the front doors and surrounding windows while recessed electric ceiling lights filled in the rest. There were no TVs while pop music played in the background. ATTIRE Totally casual, so I would normally be in a t-shirt, boardshorts, and flip-flops. OVERALL I really enjoyed the food at Hawaii Kai's Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers location as my first experience with this brand. High marks for all of the food (however... please add some spice to the chicken seasoning and sauce, and more flavor to the coleslaw), the portions were great, the prices were very reasonable, and the service straightforward. The menu was extremely limited, but the same could be said with In-N-Out. I wished there were some Hawaii-specific menu items. Sure, they were a fast-food chain restaurant, but they started as a local small mom & pop business at one time. I found complete value based on the prices, service, and experience noted above (TOTAL paid experience was around $23.00 BEFORE any discounts and/or tip). And, they accepted my credit card of choice... AMEX! 5.0 STARS

Oddly, Drive Thru wasn't available for ordering on the app. I'm assuming this is for speed continuity as the lane appeared to move quickly. Our delivery person was so polite and kind. The RC sauce was almost savior but our personal taste for a spicier palate missed without an option for zing!
