So many options. Too many options. We liked almost everything we got. Nothing was necessarily mind blowing, but it was all solid and satisfying. The chili was better than your average chili. The sushi was not good (would definitely pass next time). This is a very classic Hawaiian diner experience with a huge menu, lots of comfort food options, and some fun dessert choices too. The Kahala location has lots of seating, which was a nice change from some of the smaller and more crowded places we visited around Oahu. I went to Zippy's Kahala last night, after chorus rehearsal, with two friends. The new dining room was quite nice and comfortable. Our waitress was pleasant. I ordered the beef stew with brown rice. My friends ordered spaghetti with chicken and wonton mein. We were all disappointed in the flavors of each dish. I had eaten the beef stew dish in the past and I had thoroughly enjoyed the taste and texture. Tonight's offering was rather bland and the meat was tough to chew. Also, I had only 3 small chunks of beef and lots of inedible gristle, which made it even more unappetizing. The spaghetti sauce was "meh" per one friend, who barely ate one-third of the spaghetti. The piece of fried chicken was juicy and okay in taste. The same experience of "meh" for my friend that had the wonton mein. The broth was not tasty at all. He knows his broth as he's experienced great broth at some pho restaurants. Maybe the chef/cooks were having an off night. I hope that was the case. read more

Considering the storm, loss of power in the community, and everyone's hunger and stress levels, we were grateful that Zippy's Kahala was open and serving customers! The lines were very long for both dine in and take out, and the wait list sign in to dine in QR code was partially working- but not being monitored, so all the customers in line communicated with each other and waited patiently until they reached a staff member. It was comfortably air conditioned, and there was limited staff, so everyone knew everything would take time. Which it did, and perhaps not together, and perhaps you didn't get a cup of water until your food arrived (which was a long wait, but we had anticipated a wait and had brought our water bottles just in case). Yay, the food was consistent and good, and we were so happy to eat a warm meal! Once food and beverage arrived, our server kindly brought water/coffee later in the meal upon request. Zippys Kahala reopened to the public after an extensive 4 month remodeling and repair on July 7, 2026. The main dining room seems more spacious and the lighting is brighter. General layout is about the same just new and nicer touches. The takeout lockers which are already being used by other locations are a welcome addition. The food is what you would expect and to their credit, they are experimenting with their offerings. Because this is their first week, there's bound to be some hiccups. When by to pick up some take out kau kau- everything ok except the turkey noodle soup (which we like) had only a small string sliver of turkey in it. End of the day portion? Not sure what would be a good way of checking but beware when ordering that soup. Parking after 5:30 can be problematic. You might have to play a little bit of musical chairs if you go prime time, especially these early first month or so. All the Kahala Zippys regulars are happy they are back and open. Zippy's Kahala finally re-opened!   It felt like forever but they said it was only closed for 4 months.  That tells you how much we missed going to Zippys Kahala!    We went yesterday to check it out - about 2 weeks after it reopened.   For me, the first things I noticed was the new color theme.  It went from darker colors to a nice beige and light blue color theme with new beige seats and the light blue picture wall in the back.  The new color theme made it feel more open and inviting.   I liked it!   They also put table seating in the previously open area in the center.    More tables, more customers! We were seated immediately and lucky enough to get Eunmi as our server.  She's one of the servers that remembers you when you come in.  The three of us sat down and the first thing she did after getting us menus was bring us all hot green tea that my mom always requests.   I was impressed she did that without even being asked.   That's service -- she remembered!!   Something that I did notice was Eunmi and the other servers were running around like crazy.  They had to seat, take order, serve, bus tables, do refills, cash you out..... while customers keep coming in one after the other.   They definitely don't have enough staff.   I felt very sorry for the servers.  As I mentioned, they were literally running back and forth between the tables and the kitchen area. Between the three of us, we ordered 1 tempura udon and 2 chef's specials.  The chef's special came with udon, tempura, and nigiri sushi.    The udon was served hot (which I love) and the noodles were al dente!   The only thing I didn't care for was the dashi had a slightly sweet taste.  I remember it being the usual udon (katsu boshi dashi) but this time it was a little different.   The tempura was good -- nice and crunchy!   It came with 2 shrimp, kabocha, and a carrot.   I think the only thing that was missing was the daikon to put in the tempura sauce.  They also don't have togarashi for the kick I always enjoy.   The nigiri had ebi, tamago, salmon with onion, and maguro.    They enjoyed it and said it was good. Now for something that made me go  "HUUUMMMM??"    I noticed they automatically added a 2% kitchen charge to the bill (see picture).    On the receipt it states "Kitchen Charge helps recruit and retain our highly trained back-of-house staff and support a sustainable compensation policy."   Instead of adding the 2% kitchen charge, why don't they pay their staff a rate that will allow them to retain and recruit good staff.  Why embed these extra charges into the customer's bill. Maybe we'll try the new locker system they installed for take-out.   We tried it at Waimalu Zippys and really love it. read more

Renovations are finished at Zippy's Kahala. On Waialae Avenue across from Kuono Marketplace. It is a two story building with parking underneath. There is sushi bar and a dining area on the mauka side. Dine-in area is on the makai end. This week also saw the release of digital deals in Zippy's proprietary app. I got the Spaghetti with Meat Sauce, which I customized and subbed with no-bean chili. For $12, it was a solid bargain. After attending an event in Kaimuki three of us decided to check out the newly-renovated Zippy's in Kahala. This was about 6:15pm. When we arrived at the parking lot we were lucky enough to find a space because the lot was packed. Once we got upstairs there were groups of folks waiting for their tables so we signed in on their QR code to get a place in line. While we waited, we noticed the woman who was checking the waitlist was also the one who took the divider between booths and checking on other things. She was hustling and looking exhausted. As she sat some of the parties at their tables we noticed a considerable amount of booths that were empty: some that had been cleared of dirty dishes and some not. There was an absence of bussers so when the servers had a minute between their usual duties, they bussed the tables, sprayed them down and put on their server hats again. In the meantime, groups kept coming in and we finally had to ask when we were to be seated. We were next. One thing I did notice on the positive side is that no one was getting upset having to wait for a table, or seeing so many empty booths. That is ALOHA When we finally sat down (next to a window) we put in our order with a lovely server named Chels. Sweet girl and very accommodating and apologetic because she was relatively new, but very professional considering the situation. We ordered our food. Two of us ordered Japanese, which meant the orders would have to be fulfilled at the Sushi Bar down the hall (different kitchen from the main Zippy's). My Spicy Salmon Bowl was beautifully arranged with very spicy salmon, egg, and ginger, with sushi rice underneath. My friend had a beautiful bento (specific name & description in the photo). Unfortunately, the sauce that went with the Shrimp Tempura was cold & the rice was missing. When the rice did come, it wasn't Japanese (Calrose). It all tasted delicious, however, despite the setbacks. Would we return? Maybe if we give them some time to get the staff they need we might. Spotted the BOGO plate app deal and couldn't say no to a free meal! Keiko saimin, regular Teri beef and regular chicken katsu coming to a total of $22 was an absolute steal (especially these days). We were so excited that Zippy's Kahala finally reopened!! Unfortunately I think our expectations were too high for opening day. We went at 5 o'clock when it wasn't too busy. Our waitress was Annette. She took our order, but the coffee TOOK FOREVER!!! I mean I ate my large soup before I got my coffee!! I was debating on canceling my coffee because it was taking so long. I think they had to roast the beans or something. The food took a while also. My french fries weren't fresh. They were OKAY, but they weren't fresh. My fried chicken was good. Our oxtail soup took a while also. When we got it, it was lukewarm AND the choi sum was COLD!! I mean cold like CHILLED!! Not even warm like the oxtail soup. When another table got their oxtail soup, I could see the steam coming from the soup, and I asked the customer if their oxtail soup was hot, and she said it was, but their choi sum was also chilled cold. WTH! So we asked Annette to heat up our oxtail soup and she did. Oxtail soup was good, but the service for the day SUCKED!! I'm assuming it was because they were exhausted being the opening day. When we paid, Annette smiled and apologized to the customer before me for the poor service, but when I went to pay, she gave me a real sour face! WTH!! Hahaha!! I'm local Asian, the customer before me was local white. Go figure. Our bill with tip came out to $75 for 2 people. OUCH!! I think Annette catered to other customers and not us. It was crazy!! This Zippys just completed a major renovation being closed for a few months. They have reopened for about 2 weeks now and I decided a weekday after the lunch rush would be good time for a visit. WRONG! There was about 6 to 7 parties ahead of us at 1:30 pm on a monday. They still have a scan barcode to check in to the table wait list. Trouble is that many patrons walk in and interrupted the hostess seating tables to take their names. On this afternoon, I understood that they only had two servers show up for work. The hostess was seating people but she really had no urgency in doing so. She would stop at other tables and have long conversations all the while the list of waiting diners was growing. After checking in on scan amd waiting 15 minutes, we just left as it was very difficult to watch the inefficient process they had to seat customers. I hope they can improve this situation in the future after this disappointment. read more

Zippy's Kahala is great. Loads of parking on two levels. Lower level is covered and there are stairs and an elevator to get customers upstairs. For a holiday, it was very easy to order snd pick up my breakfast order. I was a little worried I wouldn't find parking. Clearly posted signs for paid and unpaid phone order pick ups. Plenty of staff on standing by to assist customers and answer any questions. The bakery case was well stocked with pastries, cakes and pies. Any sweets needed for the Christmas morning breakfast feast ahead. Everything looked delicious. I was so captivated, I completely forgot to order the gin dui. ‍ The fried rice was so soft and very flavorful and the Portuguese sausage was perfectly cooked. Not burnt and not just "kissed" by the pan. The spam was a bit overdone, and a little crisp which is easy to do when cut thinly. I know to customize my breakfast order next time. read more

I saw a post where this lady mentioned her new favorite menu item was the lemon chicken. I love lemon chicken but it's so hard to find good lemon chicken. I used to love L&L but they kept overcooking the chicken. I had high hopes for Zippy's lemon chicken ($15.50) but was so disappointed. The pieces were fatty and not crispy; it's ok if they decided to make their version a non-crispy version, but this one seemed to be their Korean chicken without sauce. The worse part was the lemon sauce--was like a thick lemon gel cake frosting. I tried to eat the chicken nuggets with bbq sauce instead but the texture didnt work. There's just something amiss about it. None of my family members cared for it either, and it's hard for a chinese family to waste food. Also tried the turkey plate ($19.15). Turkey and gravy tasted okay but the stuffing was just mush. Guess nice not having to chew. Was disappointed in how little turkey there was for the price. May look like a lot, but they were small pieces--like the end or scraps. Also ordered the $9.99 spaghetti plate special which seemed to have only about 2/3 the amount than before. I need to try this order again to see if quantity really did decrease permanently. But on the plus side, tried the $15.95 Wrecking Crew pac which was a fun combo of chili, a chicken, Portuguese sausage, and a fish. This would be an awesome permanent addition to the menu. This Zippy's location was my go to for many years and this past visit a couple days ago was definitely disappointing. My family thought it would be a great idea for my extended family to try Zippy's because they're from California and never tried it before. We usually have good experiences here. Not this time. The renovation looked really nice. Not too many changes, but a lot more modern looking. There's a QR code you do need to scan to add your party to the list. I don't remember ever having to do this before. But I guess it's something new to make the queue more organized? I liked the idea. But the execution of that was so awful. There were 4 parties ahead of us. The hostess was explaining the order of how everyone will be seated. First party got seated pretty quick. So you would think the second party would be seated pretty quick too. Nope. The second party was a couple that was waiting by the check in for so long. Apparently the hostess got interrupted. I think she was doing multiple things at once because they were short staffed. Then the third and fourth parties of two got seated a little while after. We were the fifth party and were still waiting for a while. I understand how much it sucks to be short staffed. But she doesn't seem to have any urgency to try help everybody quickly. We also overhear her casually talking to co workers about what time someone else starts like there aren't a bunch of customers waiting for a table. That was pretty irritating. The hostess did tell us they were trying to get a good table for us because we were a party of 6. But there was a table open that could've sat all of us perfectly right in front of us. I guess they wanted us to be seated at a certain area of the restaurant to make it easier for the server? But we were already waiting for so long and getting frustrated to the point we had to ask if we can just sit at the table we saw. The hostess looked reluctant to fulfill our request. But she asked anyway and they let us sit there. Which was good at least. I'm not sure who our server was supposed to be because one guy came to take our order and was pretty nice and efficient. I don't think we really saw him much after that because we were helped by a different guy towards the end of the meal? I'm not sure what was going on with the servers. But I hardly saw either one of them checking on us throughout the meal. Food was decent. Did take a while for it to arrive though. It's a good thing my extended family loved the food. This is the only reason I'm giving it an extra star. I had the chili with rice, no beans and it was good. Wished there was more rice. I am very hesitant to go back to this location to eat in. At least not for a while. I hope they figure out their staffing situation and their seating system soon because that was a disaster. We were not the only ones frustrated. We even talked to other customers that were also waiting for tables and they were just as frustrated. read more

I wouldn't recommend visiting right now after the renovations, especially if you have a large party. The waitlist and queue felt very chaotic, and the hostess didn't do a great job of explaining how the seating process worked. I understand they were extremely busy and likely understaffed, but repeatedly yelling, "We only have two servers and one cook, so it's going to take an hour or so," wasn't reassuring or helpful. Clear communication would have gone a long way toward managing guests' expectations and making the experience feel more organized. After waiting and seeing how chaotic things were, we decided to leave and go somewhere else instead. Hopefully, once they work through the post-renovation rush and staffing improves, the overall experience will be much better. read more

Took a long time for service, used plastic forks because not enough tinsels, half my breakfast wasn't served and had to cancel, waited 10 minutes for coffee refill, and server walked away before I finished my request (twice). well I just picked up four chicken and spaghetti plates from Zippys Kahala and I'm very disappointed in it. It has no flavor. The sauce is watery. My chicken was burnt compared to the plate I had from Zippys Moili'ili 2 days ago. Shout out to Zippy's Moiilili for the sauce on there spaghetti had way more flavor and the overall plate was just way better. Kahala Zippy's is so tight with there sauce also. The ube haupia pie did not have enough haupia and tasted almost completely like ube but was still overall good. Great part is, you can also order from the sushi menu from the regular dining side. Love this spot for on the go or the nights when we don't feel like cooking. Easy to enjoy with the keiki and one of the few places they will finish all of their food! Good service, cozy and homey feel, clean establishment, ample parking affordable prices. 1 adult + 2 kids = $50, which includes a good tip for dining inn. Do not waste your time. I have frequented Zippys Kahala numerous times over the years. Sadly, the prices have drastically increase and the customer service is non-existent. I ordered a single spaghetti with garlic bread through the app, and waited over half an hour before deciding to ask about my order. I watched several customers enter, order and pay for their food, and receive their orders in that time. When I tried to talk to an employee to inquire about the order status, I was ignored. After about 10 minutes of trying, I finally got someone to stop and help. After giving my information, the employee went to the back, returned and threw my order on the counter, said "we are busy" and walked away. This is one of my favorite Zippy's locations. Located in Kahala under the freeway, it is diagonally situated across from Kahala Mall on its mountain Ewa side. The food seems standardized across all Zippy's so there will be similar portions sizes and number of items in consistently sized containers. This Kahala Zippy's has 7 distinct areas: (1) Parking lot 1st floor (2) Parking lot 2nd floor (3) Japanese food dining area (4) Eating area (with restroom) (5) Ordering, take out counter for usual Zippy's foods (6) Bakery (7) Dining area (with restroom) PARKING - 2 floors: There is a medium-large parking lot under the building and additional much smaller parking area on the second floor. Access to the first floor parking lot is middle of the building on the East side while the upper second floor parking is accessed at the right side of the building also on the East side of the building. ENTRANCES - 2: 1st Floor - The entrance from the first floor parking lot faces the East middle area of the building. There is a stairwell and an elevator to the second floor. 2nd Floor - Likewise, the second floor parking lot entrance is at the building section facing that parking lot. DINING: Dining and ordering are located on the second floor. Japanese restaurant dining area - The Japanese food dining area serves Japanese food. There is an actual sushi chef who prepares delicious Japanese sushi! One can sit at the sushi counter or at a table. Sushi is served as sets or ala carte per sushi ingredient type (various fish varieties, shrimp, tamago egg, tempura, veggies, etc) and they also offer more mainstay Japanese meals like shrimp tempura and chicken or pork katsu, and Japanese bento meals in black lacquer boxes served with green tea, miso soup, and green salad. Although this is the Japanese food area, one can also order items from the regular Zippy's menu. Eating area - If you want to eat what you purchased from the take out area, this is the place to do it. There are many tables situated in rows and columns, and along the inside wall is the door to the restrooms. Ordering, take out counter - This is the main ordering area for all Zippy's foods. It's in the center across from the main entrance doors. Just walk right up to the counter, place your order, pay for it then, then wait on the opposite side of the ordering counter. When your order is ready, they will call the number associated with your receipt. Bakery - You can select from different varieties of sweets, from napples, to cakes, to pies, and croissant-type treats. Order at this counter. Dining area - Here you wait to be seated and can sit down to a hot fresh Zippy's meal. The portions may be a little different and all meals are served on plates and metal utensils as opposed to disposable ones are used here. They will give you water and napkins along with your order. And although this is the dining area for the usual Zippy's menu, you can also order from the Japanese restaurant dining area. A restroom is at back of the dining area closest to the kitchen. This Zippy's provides a variety of dining situations and includes Japanese foods which are one of my most food favorites! I just wish if anything that the Japanese restaurant would serve different types of Japanese curry dishes. I would order curry all the time! read more

Christmas stop is Zippy's... After our usual stop for Thanksgiving and Christmas which are major holidays that I'm lucky to have the day to myself it's usually going back home and chill but I though let's take that one step further and grab a bite and with many places that gives their staff the day off as well luckily Zippy's opens their doors for groups that needs catering items for pick up but for many folks to dine in as well. This Kahala location does have lots of parking and access to the restaurant by stairs or elevator makes it very easy and as many waited for dine in service we decided for the take out and enjoy our bites on many tables that are available to enjoy. Mom got the mini hamburger steak which was the saddest item unfortunately as the patty looks as small as the happy meal burger drenched in gravy topped with onions that was barely cooked and was just too raw that she didn't finish it and didn't want to even take it home sadly which made me really disappointed. Though I ordered the Fried Chicken Plate which came with two scoops of rice and a scoop of macaroni salad and three thigh pieces of hot and crispy fried chicken that they're so known for. Seasoning was a tad salty for me but feeling horrible for mom I gave her a piece which she enjoyed. It's nice to have a place for local comfort foods and here I'm grateful to the staff for doing their best though there are reasons I don't frequent very often and keep it simple as some of the menu options aren't recommended. My husband and I love going to Zippy's--it's been a favorite of ours since childhood. Today, we decided to indulge in some comfort food that brings back fond memories. He ordered the mini loco moco, and I had the small wun tun min. Both dishes were delicious and satisfying--definitely glad we didn't go for the full-sized portions! While the restaurant was a bit understaffed, our waitress was amazing. She was constantly on the move but still managed to remember our order and even refilled my hot tea without being asked. Out of all the Zippy's locations I've visited, I have to say the Kahala one is my favorite. The staff is friendly, the place is clean, and it has a homey, comfortable vibe. The current special was shared in Facebook. Shrimp tempura with furikake salmon for $17.95. It was quite good! Too much for me to finish so I brought some salmon home. Tempura was light and crispy but by the end it got kind of oily. It was still pretty good all in all. The young server Reese was great! I've been here so many times, and for whatever reason, it was busy for Sunday evening. We were in the area, and thought of this place. As usual, you can use your phone to check in, or wait for the attendant to check you in. We opt to use the phone. Anyway, we waited shortly to be seated, but when we sat, it felt like hours to be serviced. I get it, it was busy, but i believe the wait time was like 30 minutes, before the waitress took our order. By the time, she took our order, it was another wait time, before we got our food. Mind you, we wanted to eat in the restaurant, and be catered too. Wrong! it was horrendous service. Long story short, we did get our food, which was partially cold, and alright, because I was famished then. Waitress came to ask, is everything alright. honestly, I was about to say something negative, but I had to hold back. The environment was okay, nice ambiance, and music in the background. But next time, I going eat elsewhere. Zippy's has always been a local favorite, and my go to place, but after experiencing what I went through, never again. I didn't give a generous tip, because they had some service charge, with my tab, but I did leave a tip anyway. Please, don't misunderstand me, I like Zippy's, but I have deep reservations. read more

This is specifically for the Sushi Menu. I came during lunch and I realized I have never been to this Zippys location before and so I knew I had to order off their Sushi Menu since I can get the Zippys menu at any other location. Restaurant is clean. Sushi dining area says it's closed until 5pm but they still serve sushi on the restaurant side. I ordered the Tempura Zaru and omg the tempura is SO GOOD. The batter was nice and flakey and not just a thick coating. Came out hot and fresh. I was a little disappointed the soba and tempura didn't come out at the same time bc by the time the tempura came, my dipping sauce was getting cold but it was still good regardless. My bf just got the ahi nigiri and presentation and slice size was nice. Overall, I was impressed by the sushi selection. However, the pricing threw me off.. I was a little surprised at how expensive some of the options were considering this is Zippys (unless the sushi is it's own separate vendor and just sells under the Zippys name so I understand). Quality was better than normal fast sushi places though so I guess it's valid. But yeah, for a fast casual place, don't expect the sushi to also be fast sushi prices. I'd come again! read more

My Boss and I decided to eat here for breakfast since we were a bit early for an estimate we were scheduled for this day. I reminded my Boss that I just recently watched the Wrecking Crew and seen a commercial with a special meal promoting the movie! So we both ordered it, because the movie was so awesome and hilarious! Everything on the special plate was excellent and super fresh, including the Breaded Hoki Fish. There was Chili with rice, four Portuguese sausages and fried chicken. It was all fantastic and very filling! The other plus is the price! I feel this Zippys is one of the nicer ones to eat in the restaurant area. The gentleman who helped us was very attentive, friendly and helpful... We could tell this gentleman loves his job. Such a rare talent to see in the restaurant industry!! read more

Update on Zippy's Kahala I'm not sure why I always torture myself. This time we ordered in person and placed a Take out order . It literally took 20 mins from placing our order till receiving our order . Most plate lunch restaurants will take no longer than 10mins . Don't want to mention names but it start with a L... Also look at the Teri Beef it keeps on shrinking LOL . For $18.75 the only positive thing about the Zip PAC deluxe is the fried chicken is a little bigger . read more
