*This review is for the cafe only* Mariposa is a great place to stop for a sandwich. You can choose a speciality sandwich or you can make your own. There's a little pad of paper where you can select what you want on your sandwich. When I went there weren't many people at the cafe, so the wait was very short. There's a few seats where you can eat. The sandwich was good, it was fresh and a good size at a reasonable price. The market is a grocery store, I didn't look at what they had, but it seemed like they had a lot of healthy options. read more

It sucks, but I just simply don't feel like coming back anymore. Every single time I come here they have no tofu options. They completely stopped making the tofu Asian salad and I haven't seen it for months, today I came and tried to get some of the tofu salad the curried kind, that they didn't have last week..and they still don't have it. every time I come here it seems like they're taking away more of the plant based options. There seems to be more of a pushed for the raw milk type variety of health, versus the natural or plant-based variety. It seems also that they don't have a lot of items...and when you ask them about it, they're more defensive than just being honest. The female cashiers are usually very nice, but it seems to be the people who work the juice/coffee bar that are not fully participating and are kind of rude and short with their responses and based on some of the other reviews, it seems that this is a shared feeling. Just so disappointing cause I've always loved the store and people I know work here locally but I just can't help but feel like the co-op in Ukiah is cheaper and has more options. it sucks because Mariposa had the best cold food selection of plant-based and regular options for food and now it's just not that anymore. read more

We ordered our sandwiches 20 minutes ago and they're still not ready, but the deli staff have time to talk up market staff and each other. The tall guy behind the counter just stands around doing nothing. So they get their deli meat in the prewrapped packages from the market, nothing fresh. Mariposa market is a must stop/shop for me when I'm in Willits. The candles, pottery, gift items are fabulous. Their produce is fresh and beautiful. They have a wonder meat selection as well. The lady at the juice bar refused to make me a green drink that didn't have celery as the base! I just wanted her to leave the celery out and she said she could not, if she did she said the only other option was carrot. Then she decided she could charge me extra to leave the celery out and add apple, which she said was more expensive than celery so she could not just add more apple in place of celery. The 16oz drink was going to cost $13 after the add ons! funny thing is I've had this drink here before and they left out the celery with no problem! Not sure what that lady's problem was! Juice bar options are not good unless you only want celery or carrots as the base. read more

OMG!! Seriously the best store ever! Like a mini Whole Foods but with added personal attention -- the employees are so helpful and polite! They truly love their customers. This store might be small but it certainly packs a punch with everything you could possibly need! From a fresh stock of fruits and veggies to supplements and a small bakery. If you have a sweet tooth and love fresh baked goodies, I suggest the gluten free chocolate cake and gluten free carrot cake. I believe the bakers are starting to recognize my husband as I've been sending him over consistently to pickup treats. Working on a delicious gluten free blueberry crisp as I write this. Be sure to add yourself to their frequent shoppers club to rack up some coupons and other perks -- it's free! We've been in Willits twice recently visiting my brother's property in the area. This place is the best! The Tropical Date smoothie and almond milk cappuccino were my regular morning order. The green salads and the vegan potato salad out of the grab and go refrigerator were great to put in the hotel fridge for our dinner, and grabbed some bananas and macro bars for the day. The people are so friendly and helpful too. The minute I arrive in Willits, it's off to Mariposa Market! read more

What a pleasant surprise! It reminded me quite a bit of Community Market in Sebastopol, my favorite place to shop. I went there looking to buy capsules, and not only did they have them, but they had them in bulk just the way I like them, along with a decent selection of herbs and spices. There's a little cafe in the corner that exudes the comforting aroma of fresh brewed coffee, and their treats don't look half bad either. There's also an indoor seating area and a microwave for your convenience. They even stock Zevia in their refrigerators, the best brand of sugar-free soda. Great selections of produce, dry goods, and other "organic" supplies with often multiple choices of these items you can not find in a "health food" store much less the standard grocery store. Supports local farmers and organic growers, the freshest produce around, great customer service, local sandwiches, a multitude of drink options, a great and diversified bulk section, grind your own nut butters, it is almost beyond belief that a small independent organic market out in the middle of rural coastal Northern California has such a broad depth of products, produce and supplies and has for decades now, that define what an "Organic Market" can be. When getting a sandwich, I chose no meat or protein, but still got charged $1.50 for avocado. I have a lot of dietary restrictions, and I'm super tired of getting charged extra money and business' profiting off of my health issues. Clearly a part of an avocado does not cost as much as a big chunk of animal. This just makes me feel like you are stealing a piece of my soul. This transaction would feel a lot better to me if this substitution was allowed. Just put avocado as a protein option maybe? read more

A Road Trip Organic Grocery Favorite! If only all the little towns on my route to camping or weekend trips had natural grocery stores like Mariposa Market. This is a great place in the center of town with fresh baked goods, produce, vitamins, toiletries, frozen foods and fresh juice as well as some great hippie clothing (tie dyed socks anyone?). The staff are friendly and it's just like going to visit mom's friends... ok, maybe your parents weren't hippies, so it would be like visiting *my* mom's friends. Don't get sucked in at the big box stores on the south end of town (if you're driving north on 101) - just keep going across the railroad tracks and past the first big intersection, and when you see the scary breakfast place on the west side of Main St, Mariposa Market is just past that (on your left if you are going north). read more

We were starving on a return trip from the redwoods, and this came up as one of three grocery stores. We didn't know what to expect. We were ecstatic to see that it was this adorable and friendly grocery with walls of snacks and produce, and with build-your-own sandwiches with all sorts of dietary options. For $9 each, we both got some massive, delicious sandwiches on ciabatta. We also got kombucha, root beer, nitro coffee, a baked good and some fruit. Needless to say, we wish this kind of place existed on every road trip. read more

Very hippie-ish, but lots of cool products packed in here, and included a little cafe-coffee-bakery area. Interesting combination of brands, from stuff I'd never heard of (yet wanted to try) to more common "healthy" brands like Amy's frozen foods. Super small produce section it EVERYTHING looked fresh and good and organic. If we'd planned ahead, I would have bought a ton of food to cook or snack on....but hosts await us. We stopped here as this is the best option for healthy food but were surprised at the selection; or lack thereof. They have a deli/sando/smoothie/juice bar which is where we were drawn to for lunch. On the build your own sando there was no vegan "protein" option so we asked they offered to go and get the curry tofu in their pre-made section and it turned out really good. I went for a juice and the large almost cost me $10! Like I said; best option for quality food but get ready to pay for it. read more

So there is a lovely appeal to having a health food store in a small town. However the management and its policies are very strict. They are far less open and kind as many of the other larger grocery stores in town. I was asked to leave the store today because I brought my puppy in with me. She is in training to be a service dog but isn't the required 18 months old. She can count to four, knows left from right, is learning doors, and can bring objects to you. She doesn't bark, jump, or act out in anyway. She has been accepted into every store she has ever entered. Except this one. which is the last straw. Over the last three years, I have been denied refunds on mislabeled items because they were used, been immediately kicked out for not having shoes multiple times even though it's against my belief structure, and when I do have on the proper attire, they still follow me around and give me that "other kind of can I help you" like I'm going to steal. They also harass any travelers and homeless that try to sit out front, give the most meager of contributions to the local food bank and.... their coffee is two shots of espresso too weak compared to every other place in town. Dont be fooled by the smell of ayurvedic soap and patchouli. Its just there to cover the smell of their judging you. kick me out for not being up to code, follow me around cause I don't look the part, serve me weak coffee and mislabeled coverings for my dreads but dont you dare pass Judgement on a benevolent and Kind being as Iris the dog. The rest of the store is clean, well stocked and has a good variety of specialty and organic products. I found lots of treats and candies to buy for friends and family. Overpriced with a small selection. The customers always succeed in making me despise living in Mendocino Co. - Mendo Matrons wandering around in patchouli-scented clouds of smug. But I can't blame the store for their clientele... The store more than earns it's rating without any additional help. As a rule, the people who work there are unhelpful, un-knowledgeable, and let you know that your question/inquiry is an imposition on their time. Mariposa is convenient with great parking. The store itself has everything you need from organic produce, to bulk remedies, to specialty foods. The lighting is natural-- not too bright. They keep the temp inside warm in the winter and cool in the summer. I found the staff to be helpful and friendly and the prices better than decent. I seriously bought 90% of our Thanksgiving meal for only $80. Crazy. Try doing that at Whole Foods! For a quick snack I recommend the Curry Tofu Salad they make in-house. The Mariposa is a well-stocked, friendly store that has quite a few things for such a small town. The produce is always organic and usually comes from local growers, so shopping here is a great way to support the community and be a locavore. The bulk aisle and naturopathic medicine aisle is pretty comprehensive, but leaves a little to be desired (I've moved here from Oakland, and the Bay Area has just about everything.) The food isn't cheap, but it's good and if you keep an eye out for sales, you can stretch your dollar pretty far. They carry a lot of microbrews and local organic wines that are hard to find elsewhere. The deli has yummy baked goods and terrific smoothies (order them with coconut water!) Often, they have tastings and I have made a meal out of my grocery trip on more than a few occasions. The employees are super-friendly and my 2 year old son is on a first name basis with many of them. When I walk up to the deli, they start making my smoothie as soon as they see me coming. Nice folks, good food. If you are passing through the 101 and need to stock up on road snacks or camping food, you can't beat the Mariposa. Great new space - open, airy and more room for more groovy food. They even have more space for their deli with pastries, bagels and great coffee. The thing that I like best about Mariposa Market is the staff - I've never seen a grumpy employee (what's up with that?). Kudos for their customer service I don't live nearby so I'm always passing through at odd times and I have found it to be a place that I can count on, and now with this new building they can really show what they can do.
