For those who may be put off by the visuals of a tentacle, my fiancé usually enjoys their Potato Taquitos and 1855 Tri Tip Alambre Tacos which are both equally delicious. The staff are very friendly and observant we did not have to ask for refills on our beverages and they took empty dishes away swiftly. The fried potatoes great in presentation ok in taste but I wish there was more potato in each bite. The arugula and dressing were the best thing I ate out of 4 dishes I tried. We also had the potato taquitos which I was looking forward to but it was very dense and the potato tasted like how a bad potato smells. Other than that it was very very bland. Nice crisp on the taquito. The gnocchi pasta dish was also no flavor. The sausage in it was good. 2nd favorite item was the slice of bread toasted on both sides. The bread was almost as big as the food on the plate. The 4th dish was the potstickers which also were just ok.

I started off with ceviche since that's my favorite appetizer at Mexican restaurants. It was really good and fresh tasting. By the time I finished my appetizer, Lourdes, the owner made it back and took over the cooking. I had to get their signature Comadre quesadilla. It was very flavorful and came inside a homemade tortilla that was lightly fried to give it a really nice texture. I finished up with a sweet corn tamale which is a favorite of mine and many places don't make them. Lourdes and the girl working were super sweet and very attentive as far as service goes. Worth the Wait -- I'd Move to Reno for This Place…read more At first glance, Los Chilaquiles looks like a pretty standard strip-mall eatery. Then you notice that at 1:00 on a Sunday afternoon there are still people waiting to get in. That should tell you something. It certainly should have told us something. My dining partner and I had never had chilaquiles before, and I didn't even know what cochinita was. Instead of making us feel like clueless outsiders, the staff took the time to explain the dishes, ingredients and different options in a way that made ordering part of the experience. I went with the Chilaquiles Colorado with cochinita, and I'm not sure there was a single "star" of the meal because everything deserved the title. The chips were pleasantly softened without becoming mush, and the chile Colorado was spicier than I expected but completely manageable. More importantly, it wasn't just hot--the flavor was complex, rich and downright addictive. The cochinita was fantastic. Then there was the Café de Olla. It arrived in a little metal pot with a cup on the side, accompanied by turbinado sugar and cinnamon sticks for stirring. Even the complimentary sweet bread with black beans that came out beforehand was delicious, and the side of black beans with my meal was good enough to deserve its own mention. The portions were exactly right, and the quality of the food far exceeded what I expected for the price. But what really pushed this place over the top was the people. Everyone was extraordinarily friendly, attentive and--most noticeably--proud of what they were serving. Our server checked on us. The food runners checked on us. The host/manager checked on us. Someone even came out from the kitchen specifically to ask how we liked everything. It never felt intrusive; it felt like people who genuinely wanted to know whether we were enjoying the food they had made. My dining partner and I also appeared to be the only non-Hispanic people eating there, which, combined with how busy the place was well after the normal brunch rush, told me we'd probably stumbled onto something special. It reminded me of the little family-run ethnic restaurants I grew up eating at in the Washington, D.C. suburbs before so many of those neighborhoods became gentrified--the kinds of places where the food didn't need to be dressed up or marketed as "authentic." It just was. Would I come back? I'm currently considering moving to Reno just so I can eat here once a week. If you go to Los Chilaquiles, enjoy the process. You're probably going to have to wait. Don't let that discourage you. Wait your turn, ask questions if you don't know what something is, order something you've never tried before and enjoy it. You'll be extremely happy you did.
