What a wonderful happy accident we made when stopping in for lunch. We were off from work on a Wednesday and had tried going to the Indian restaurant in the same parking lot/shopping center. Even though the doors were unlocked and open we were told they didn't open for another hour and so we walked across the parking lot to Cafe Dominican Restaurant. So so so very glad we did. We have been here 2 times since and it just keeps getting better. Service is excellent and very friendly even though we have had times when language was a barrier. The restaurant is a bit run down and most people grab food to go as we did our first time here. The following times we wanted to enjoy their cocktail, well actually, I think it is a shot that was recommended when we asked for a "Dominican" cocktail. It's so yummy - rum, wine, and some type of bark - delicious! We've had the pork ribs and a couple of the stews (guisados) and EVERYTHING is wonderful. I highly recommend getting the yellow rice with pigeon peas over the white, it is so flavorful. I keep forgetting to get photos of our food because I'm so anxious to dig in, but I promise to do better next time we are there. read more

It's Sunday dinner time and the music is sooooo loud I could not hear anything. I read about the attitude the staff had and they were correct. Service without a smile, but the food was fantastic. They brought us "Sams" bottled water and charged $2.00 each, automatic gratuity and a charge for using a credit card...all not stated anywhere. Shame for all the extra charges and extremely loud music because the food was good. 4-$12 meals and 4 Sams botttled waters cost us $80.01 total. read more

When you walk in you see the buffet or cafeteria style glass food displays on the left and booths on the right with tables all along the middle. I couldn't eat anything in their household without learning how to say it in their native tongue . I learned Spanish that way I also learned to love the food . Portions are large and you can get exactly what you want. Options are insane. Love that I can pick something different every time!! If I could give this restaurant a zero I would. We went here to have lunch. There are supposed to be lunch specials. There were no prices anywhere. I asked for two pieces extra of oxtail and was charged instead a whole other order. My husband asked for goat and mashed plantains and his order was supposed to come with rice and beans as well and it didn't. They charged him extra for the mashed plantain side as well. They did not specify any of the prices and once we were done eating we were given the receipt of $60. So my lunch plate was $16 and then another $10 for two added pieces of oxtail. I have usually gone at night but during the day they have a cafeteria serving style counter. The food is really God but I am obsessed with their yellow rice! It's is so so good! During the night they take away the food counter and change to just menús since any open space becomes a dance floor. The usual music played is Latin and the typical crowd is Dominucan but even though the space is small the environment is relaxed and fun. On a side note, they also offer hookah but I've never tried it but everything else is good. read more

I this restaurant is filthy and the customer service is horrible. I e been going to this restaurant for a couple of years and it's gone to hell, the employees are rude and disrespectful. The last few trips here have been very disappointing, we drive 45 minutes to eat here and the food quality has gone to crap. The foods been old and dry. The tables weren't clean, o staff member was wiping them down after the customers left. COVID-19 ?? I'm she is all this restaurant and it's employees. The bathrooms are unsanitary! I was given a recommendation to this place and when we walked in, we didn't know if we needed to wait for someone to seat us or if we sat ourselves. Once our server finally came we were advised that she didn't know if our requested meal was available, items from the daily menu are ordered from the to go window and they may have run out. Getting into the to go line I was fortunate my meal was still available. After we enjoyed our amazing food, we looked for our waitress for 20min so we can get the check, found her, asked for the check and still waited 10 more mins until my mother got up to physically get the check from her. It's located in a strip at the NW corner of Jimmy Carter and Britt Road, a pretty easy drive from anywhere in the Tucker-Embry Hills area as it's not near the hustle and bustle of the Jimmy/I-85 exit. It was our first excursion heading out on the Britt Road, which was quite exciting. We got the Creole shrimp in the plantain/starch bowl, as well as the eggs and mashed plantains (mufongo? mofonga? something like that). None of it was spicy, which I think is the norm for this cuisine. It was good hearty comfort food. If you're seeking hot/spicy, I don't think this is it (though you can add hot sauce). The have a steam table of choices for lunch, $6 a plate. Sometime we'll probably get some takeout from the steamtable. It had a few bone-in meats (which I'm not crazy about b/c I don't like having to dodge shards of bone), but also 2 or 3 boneless looking meats. Some of the dinners were around $10-12, but other plates were slightly less. We'll get back over here. read more

The menu is written in Spanish and English which I found helpful. The menu has a nice variety to select from. No complaints This restaurant is nothing decorative, and in my opinion doesn't have to be as long as the food is good. This is a "mom and pop" type restaurant. The food tastes like you were eating right from someone kitchen. It's nothing American about this spot. You walk in, you walk into Dominican Republic. Very delicious! I love the stewed chicken over rice with a side of sweet plantain. I just wish I spoke Spanish or there were more employees that spoke English. The service is not that great, the employees have terrible customer service. My 2 stars are for the terrible service. Today I went in early was ignored for a few minutes. When it was time to pay I stood waiting to get my total, if I was a crook I could've just walked out, while the young lady just walked around. It's Dominican culture to want to create a welcoming place, think "Cheers" everyone knows everyone. If you sit there with a mad face and arms folded, yeah, you probably won't get stellar service. Don't hate on the culture aspect because you don't understand that Dominican "customer service" is not the same as what you get at Chillis or Longhorns. Upon walking in looks like it might be a club at night very gloomy inside. They have to go ( which you and order over and phone and they do have delivery) and seating so if you wanted you could sit down and a waitress would serve you. There food is already made and in tray warmers so service is fast. The young lady that helped me was very nice. As she was packing m plate I saw a gentleman bring out short ribs so I asked her if I could get a small container of that since she already packed my order that had the chicken. She was very accommodating and switched it out for me. The food is very good white rice was just sticky enough the short ribs were nice and tender and the salad was refreshing. I loved the food! This is authentic Dominican food. I grew up in a predominantly Puerto Rican/Dominican city in NJ and this place reminds me of the neighborhood Spanish restaurants I grew up eating at. I did not eat in so I can only speak for my experience ordering for take out. When you walk in you can see a bar on one side and a small stage on the other with tables in the middle. The cafeteria style food was in the back so it was little confusing where you were supposed to go since there's no one in the front to direct you (one of the few bad things I saw). The girl behind the food counter greeted us right away and was good with describing what some of the food items were. She got our food packed up quickly although she forgot our beans and we had to tell her to pack them. There was no clear place to pay for the food, the girl just handed us a bill ticket and placed the food on a table. We only knew where to pay by watching someone else and they did not have a proper card machine, it was a phone connected card swiper which I found a bit weird for a restaurant with a bar (2 other bad things we saw) The customer service and set up were definitely not 4 star but the food definitely makes up for it White rice - good Beans - only Dominicans can make good beans like that Carne de res - delicious Bacalao con yuca - delicious Spaghetti - no idea what Dominicans put in their spaghetti to give it that unique flavor but it's good Just wish this place was closer! read more

I came here for lunch with a friend and was pleasantly surprised! Yes, the place looks a bit suspicious because of the bar that is already open at lunch time?? Day drinking during the weekday like that...to each their own :) They have such a large variety of for choices that were freshly coming out of the kitchen. They are also generous in serving size, so you can't possibly be hungry after eating (I couldn't even finish my entire meal). I noticed that there is a lot of tomato sauce based flavors in what I happened to have chosen. Am I an expert on Dominican food? Certainly not. However, it was delicious and I'd certainly like to try other Dominican restaurants in the future if they are as delicious as what I've tried at this place.
