If you're looking for mariscos this place is the bizness! Fresh seafood con buen sabor! My mouth is salivating thinking about the tostadas I recently ate. I recommend trying both the shrimp and octopus (pulpo). Get generous with the hot sauce, sprinkle on some lime and think about the last beach vacation you took. It doesn't get better than this. Just make sure you got a pocket full of cash as they don't take cards. Word of caution, stay away from the burritos. I can't speak for the tacos but the carne asada burrito was horrible. No flavor whatsoever. Sad really, this could've been a 5 star spot! Pro-tip: Hit the corner store and BYOB! It's good. I wish I reviewed this place years ago when it was great all around, because my history with this place makes me feel like a 3 star isn't enough. I still love this place but it has undeniable gone down in quality. If you're looking for affordable, delicious seafood this is a good spot to check out. I've tried their oysters, burritos, ceviche and aguachiles and have not been disappointed. I live close by so I wish their hours were better. La Costa has lost the special touch they once had. Look at these huge pieces of shrimp. Authentic Ceviche should have small pieces of shrimp and all small chopped veggies. I used to be pretty good at math when I was younger. This bully even stole my algebra homework for a few weeks because I wouldn't date his friend. Even smart and beautiful people have problems sometimes. While I'm not such a math whiz anymore, I do speak Spanish fluently. Or so I thought until I came to Mariscos La Costa. I ordered up half the sea because I had mucho hambre, and I expected the bill to be somewhere in the teens, because I hadn't really read the menu. When the nice man at the counter responded with 'seis dólares' I wondered if he was speaking some obscure dialect that I had never heard. I plunked down mi billete de veinte dólares to see what would happen, and what happened was math magic: the difference of twenty minus six, which just so happens to be fourteen. I suggest tipping favorably. Okay, so you now get that this place is cheap, but the food is phenomenal. Probably the best cevicheria in the biggity biggity O. Order up a few tostadas de ceviche de camarón, unos ostiones (oysters), and some tacos al pastor, and you'll be set. Only drawback is that you need to byob, but you won't have a problem finding any nearby. Or you can try their horchata which is also delicious. I may not be a number person anymore, but Mariscos has reminded me that math is cool, especially when it works in your favor and provides flavor. read more

Down International Blvd on the pilgrimage to Mariscos we went, tongues lolling, bellies grumbling. The strip looked like the outer Mission, palms, bodegas and mom n' pop places line a sunny stretch as people bustle about. Now I don't know how the taco truck image was conjured up in my head, but I expected a big honking aluminum beast parked all askew with people swarming around it like a fruit fly to a rotten plum on a baking lot in the beating sun. Not so! We were greeted with a pleasant old school tiled patio and sliding order windows, and a host of local guys chatting away and stuffing their faces happily. My friend attempted to order in broken Español and the counter fella in one of those fast food paper hats answered in English with the patience of once who talks to the unknowing often. So we order, his eyes widening with every item after taco number six. Rubbing our hands together, we devoured the camarones cocktail, a sort of watery salsa, avocadoed cooked shrimp cup that was a-ok. The pescado ceviche tostadas were bomb in flavor and came on a fresh shell, though it was in smaller shreds not chunky bits. Nevertheless, I'd glady order em again. The tacos... oh ho, the tacos! Yelpers, you have not led me astray. Piled high with chopped meats and scattered with diced onions and cilantro atop double corn tortillas, these are a one dollar wonder! Carne asada, excellent spices but a little grisly. Pollo, a wee bit dry, but yummy, balanced seasoning. Pastor, passed myself though my dining partner deemed it best on the red cafeteria tray! I'd love to see the radish accompanying the tacos shredded and pickled instead of a whole chunk, and fresh jamaica agua fresca instead of the yucky syrupy kind. A friend and I were invited to a Mexican food themed pot luck. She had volunteered us to make enchiladas, unfortunately, my friend and I had way TOO much to drink the night before and were in no position to cook. Luckily, I am quick on my feet and told her to get dressed, grab a large casserole dish with a lid and the Tapatio hot sauce. I got her in the car and started to drive. "Where are we going?", she asked. "To make food for this damn pot luck. Don't worry, I have an idea." I head off to E. 14th and 37th, pulled into the parking lot of La Costa, grabbed the casserole dish and stood in line. La Costa specializes in in ceviche- shrimp, calamari, fish, if it comes from the sea, they have it and it's GOOD! It has a funny little set up, you walk up to the building and there is a guy that takes orders from the window. Although the building looks like it would have space for seating inside, it doesn't, only an open patio with tables. First come, first serve style. When I get to the front of the line, I ask him how much it would cost to fill my casserole dish with shrimp ceviche and for a mere $20, I was headed off to the potluck with my "home made" dish in hand. We get there, I pull out my casserole dish, set aside the bag of tostadas that had come with the order and put out the Tapatio. Suffice to say, our dish was the most popular dish that night and I still get request for the recipes--- no prob, the recipes in the mail, yeah right. read more

Simply put, La Costa is the shiz. I have been to La Costa close to 20 times. I have never had a problem parking. I have never been anything less that 100% satisfied with my food. The service is good and fast and the food is CHEAP. In no way are you getting what you pay for here. Even though they're only $1, the carne asada tacos are fantastic. I fill up on 4 tacos... and I can get them with my Diet Coke for $5. Their $1 oysters are the freshest, largest oysters I have ever had. These things are the size of the palm of my hand (with shell), or at least were the last time I was there. I have never been disappointed by the service here. They are fast, clean and very friendly. I love getting extra lime, salsa verde, tostadas... they don't charge you extra and they get what you desire without giving you grief. .The outdoor covered seating is clean and well maintained. Even though there is no indoor seating, they sill have restrooms and they were clean every time I've used them. Have a limited or short lunch break? No worries mis amigos, these guys are pros. They're insanely fast and your La Costa experience will no doubt be faster than a drive through durring lunch hours. I love this place. read more

We need more than truck tacos on the hood of the car, as good as those truck tacos are likely to be. Mariscos la Costa. It's been years. Too long. Pull into the parking lot under the old-school sign that you'd expect to say "1/4lb GIANT Burger," find a plastic picnic table, and order at the window. Grab a few tacos. They are good. Then order lots of ceviche. On tostadas, or in a cocktail bowl, but try more than one. Both white fish and shrimp ceviches featured clean, fresh seafood, perfectly cured in the lime juice, with a gloriously hot and cool mix of spices. Absorb the warm night air. Listen to the music of the passing cars on International. Crunch a few bits of escabeche. Dig into the pile of acidified fish flesh. Sip your Coke. Go back for seconds. The fact that they keep their prices this low is insane, but the fact that the food is actually really well made makes my head hurt to know that no one else really goes here. Sure there are folks that area afraid of neighborhoods with people of color and sure this place is far from any anthropologie store, but that makes me even happier. I can go here any time and get great food with the five bucks left in my pocket from buying gas. I love their tacos! Fresh seafood is the name of La Costa's game. It's on the corner of International and 37th in Fruitvale, freeway side of the road, in what looks like an old drive up hamburger stand (which it was). On the recommendation of a colleague who is a regular, I had the ceviche camarones tostada (which he recommended getting in a bowl) (he said it leads to a larger helping), a bargain at $2.50, and excellent and super fresh to boot. I also tried tacos (pollo and carne, and they also have lengua and el pastor). $1 a taco. Very good. It's an outside spot, and the only thing that would have made it a perfect lunch was a few degrees' increase in temperature and a cold cerveza. As an aside, I saw a plate or two of oysters, and the place was packed at lunch. Update 4/17/08: as good as the last time. It's sort of absurdly cheap, yet absurdly fresh. BTW, the tostada with ceviche camarones in a bowl? En plata. And I dialed it back to 1 taco. Quite great. Fresh, delicious, and healthy. So good. If it were near where I worked? This place was once a Giant Burgers location. Giant Burgers represents some real town nostalgia. Sadly, there are only two locations remaining. However, I can see why this Giant Burgers location may have been a problem spot. It was a meeting spot for side shows, pimping. and various shenanigans on E14th. Enter Mariscos La Costa. Now the big parking lot accommodates those craving, tasty tortas, ceviche, tostadas, tacos, seafood cocktails, and a delicious cheap $4.25 burrito. They serve the food up quick in an outdoor covered setting. This is a nice spot to hit on a hot day. Also, La Costa is also right across the street from the maker of the grandest of super burritos, El Farolito. Now there's even more choices on the block. read more

I usually reserve my mexican street food eats to places housed on 4 wheels with the rule: "The dirtier the better." So I was well guarded about trying a place that was pretty clean and making food from an actual kitchen. I originally came here because I missed the old days (like 6 years ago) when Sinaloa use to have dollar tacos. In fact, it seems almost all the great taco trucks in the oakland area have made a taco $1.25 as the standard now. So a place that has dollar tacos....I had to try! I ordered two pastor tacos and they did not dissapoint. The chunks of meat were generous and it came with a nice hot sauce that blended well with a squirt of lime - Savory, Spicy, Salty and Sour mmmmm. The shells were also served heated and not fried which meant that they weren't as flavorful or crispy as sinaloa...but you certainly feel less bad about eating them. In fact I would go on to say they probably serve the healthiest tacos in the fruitvale area. I also ordered a fish ceviche that was very good as well. I was served with a cripsy tortilla and was extremely tangy and flavorful. I seriously felt like I could eat like 10 of them. The only downside was the dollar oysters. I'm a big fan of raw oysters but this place does them wrong. You get a medium sized oyster that is ideally suited more for cooking than eating raw. It may seem like a good deal cause of the size, but it didn't taste right compared to eating smaller oysters raw. This place is definitely a nice change of pace from eating at the trucks and its cheap prices, good food, private lot and clean patio make it a great place to eat. However, sinaloa still gets my votes for the best tacos in town. read more

STRICTLY seafood for me from here...had 1 carne asada taco...not much to write about here...it was just that a taco, and definitely a $1 worth. The OYSTERS on the other hand....my gosh! Granted they don't have all the garnishes that you find at other restaurants, but lime and hot sauce was all I needed....along with the brown bag Modello, shhhhh! But yah brown bag it is.... I have quite a confession to make. A long time ago I read all the rave reviews for Taqueria El Farolito and quickly drove out to International and 37th. I saw exactly one conspicuously Mexican restaurant, and ate at exactly one. I proceeded to write my own rave review of Farolito, and ate there a whopping three more times before today, when I finally looked up at their sign and to my horror saw an entirely different name: Mariscos La Costa. No wonder I couldn't find those damn Enchiladas Suizas everyone talks about. But I couldn't have made a better mistake. May everyone be so lucky as to accidentally wind up at MLC! I have accordingly deleted my Farolito review and reposted it here (of course, with names changed): _______________ Some of the easiest five stars I've ever given. NOT ONLY is Mariscos La Costa the best Mexican in this half of California, but they also serve the best ceviche that I've had in the U.S. I can only vouch for the fish ceviche myself, but I saw someone eating the octopus and it looked damn good too. I have been Mexicanly suffocating since I moved to the Bay Area from L.A. four years ago, and I was almost ready to accept the "It's not worse, just different" view. But MLC is just plain good, regardless of your circumstantial taqueria tastes. What we really need in the bay is more places like it. I should also mention that their prices are extremely low. My family and I have been coming to Mariscos La Costa for nearly ten years, and we're dedicated fans. Completely reliable, this outpost with a parking lot, palm trees, and a tiled outdoor patio (well, tiled area in the parking lot, let's say) serves fat, exceedingly fresh, briny oysters redolent of the sea. What I hate about oysters on the half shell at expensive restaurants is that they pour the ocean water out and rinse the oysters. I strongly prefer my raw oysters with the tang of the sea from which they came. You can't get fresher oysters even at the source in Point Reyes. What's more: they're a dollar each and far more satisfying then anywhere else. This is where I go when I get that hankering. The $1 tacos, made with small double corn tortillas and spilling over with your choice of carne asada, lengua, camarones (shrimp), pork, and possibly a couple of other choices, sprinkled with finely chopped onions and cilantro and drizzled with spicy salsa, are deeply satisfying. With a beer bought from the liquor store next door and brought back, three tacos fills me up, which means this is a $3 lunch that is fresh, hot, home-made, and tasty. I just love this place and recommend it highly. They are consistent, professional, friendly, and on top of their game. The garbage cans can get a little full, but enjoy the experience. This place runs with an efficiency and economy that would put even Wal-Mart to shame. 2 oysters, 2 tacos al pastor, 1 tostada de ceviche de camarón, and 2 horchatas: under $10 (!!!) While the oysters and ceviche transported me happily under the sea in a way that Sebastian the crab would commend, the tacos al pastor rekindled my love for land stronger than any little mermaid could ever comprehend unless they tried some of that same flavorful BBQ pig meat. I stumbled upon La Costa while passing through International Blvd and was surprised to find Mexican food better and cheaper than anywhere else in the East Bay. The service is very quick and the weather made eating outdoors a very pleasant experience. The tacos are excellent, particularly the lengua, which had a great texture and the strong beef flavor was complimented by the limes. The horchada is dispensed through a fountain, which may be less pleasing to the eye than the bucket and ladle method, but I believe the fountains produces a more consistent and well blended drink. The burritos are decent - not as bad as Steve K. suggests - but I do think that if you're looking exclusively for burritos you ought to go across the street to El Farolito. The biggest problem I have is with the wrapping technique, which is way too loose, which creates structural problems when you try and eat it. They're also a bit on the small side. Still, I would take one of these burritos over Gordos, Picante, or any of the other popular East Bay spots. I suspect that since La Costa is advertised as a seafood restaurant, their seafood dishes are their strong point. I am not a huge fan of shrimp so I can't attest; this review is only based on tacos, burritos and horchada. read more

I trekked down International Blvd to get myself some ceviche at Mariscos today. They have a lot you can pull into with ample parking and the place itself is covered with outdoor only seating. It's definitely a place to go to when it's warm and sunny. Since it wasn't, I got my order to-go. I ordered the tostada de ceviche de pescado thanks to Nique's warning that the shrimp here is not deveined (thanks, girl!). I peeked into my bag when I got back to my car and thought "lol, wut?" They put the ceviche in tupperware, but didn't include a tostada or even tortilla chips. Don't worry guys, they DID give me saltine crackers and ketchup. Yeah. Really. CAN SOMEONE EXPLAIN THIS TO ME? DID I JUST TRANSPORT MYSELF TO THE UK, WHERE ALL FOOD IS WEIRD AND SENSELESS? Needless to say, the ceviche is to be ordered and eaten there unless you want a sad woman's to-go bag. Luckily I had tortilla chips at home and the ceviche itself was killer. They've raised their prices a bit: tacos are $1.25, ceviche tostadas now start at $3.50, burritos and quesadillas are still $5, and a shrimp quesadilla will only set you back $7. For our first taco adventure in Oakland it was a great start to what seems to be a wonderful relationship with my tummy and my love for Mexican food. I had the ceviche pescado, al pastor taco, and later on wanted to try the burrito and so I shared the carne asada burrito. My goodness the burrito was huge for less than $4 I think it was. The food comes out absurdly fast and there's seating outside with lots and lots of hot sauce on each table. Would come back again, but not until I try some of the taco trucks in Oakland. read more

Their specialty is the ceviche tostadas which cannot be matched because all the other janky trucks in the town simply don't have the turnover to have bomb seafood all the time. This is the only place you should trust your bowels to if you are going to order ceviche or raw oysters. My favorite order is the fish and shrimp ceviche tostada and layering on the Tapatio from the liter sized bottles on every table. Don't forget to grab extra tostadas from the window when you pick up your order. The burritos, quesadillas, and tortas aren't a bad pickup either if you are in the mood. The wait time here is.... nothing. They crank through a line of 15 people in the time it takes the taco trucks to hand out one order. Prices are cheap, service is fast, and food is delicious -- what more can you ask for? This is hands down the best ceviche place around this area. I love their tostada de ceviche camaron y pulpo (shrimp ceviche and octopus) -- though last time I got it, it had quite the kick. My fiancé had the tostada de jaiva y pulpo (crab meat and octopus), and while we also found it tasty, it was drier than the version I got (but I suppose that's to be expected given that mine was ceviche). He added tapatio sauce for flavoring (they have huge bottles of them on the tables), which made it taste good too except he put a little too much of it on there... I also get their horchata here, which is very tasty. Note that their menu is in Spanish but the employees speak English, so you should be ok even if you don't know Spanish. Could not have been better! Reading the reviews here gave me a hankering for some oysters. I popped in and ordered a dozen. 3-4 minutes and $12.00 later, I was in oyster heaven. Large and unambiguously fresh, they came with lime wedges, Tapatio packs, and saltine crackers. What I liked best was that they were not too cold. If I had to guess, I'd say that they are not stored on ice, which IMO detracts from the flavor. Instead, I'd surmise that they are kept live in tank of cool water.
