When visiting Albuquerque, we wanted something unique and authentic to sample the local Mexican cuisine. This restaurant fit the bill! The interior was brightly decorated with friendly staff and outstanding service. It seemed to be filled with locals, and the manager greeted us and checked in on us several times. I of course sampled a margarita with the complimentary chips, salsa, beans and green avocado salsa that was brought out - all of which were outstanding! For my appetizer, I had the shrimp and octopus served with a spicy soy sauce. It was delicious and well-seasoned - such a unique combination! For my entree, I had shrimp over rice served with a green chile sauce, which was the perfect combination of spicy and creamy. The menu is seriously HUGE - you could come here for years and still not sample all that this restaurant has to offer. I appreciated that there was a wide variety of creative Mexican seafood options - not just the stereotypical Americanized Mexican food. I would absolutely come back the next time I am in Albuquerque! read more

Found my comfort seafood hub. Yey! (Actually it's not a seafood place, it's a Mexican restaurant: great selection of Mexican menu) You wanna know why I said it's a seafood place? That's cause: I super love this place especially when I'm craving fish. Omg! I love their deep fried tilapia. I think for this past week I've been ordering it for lunch when I'm off duty, and dinner straight days. No joke. Sometimes I just request my hubby to order a take out for Me. Hehe. So I am really happy that we have Mariscos la Playa here in abq! Important note about this place is: They have incredible food, with affordable price! They have another area for a sports bar. If you just want to spend time drinking and watching your fave sports. It's very accessible. No prob with parking. Can be a party place. Cool staff by the way, very friendly. Sooooo good. I'm a big fan of a giant Mexican-style shrimp cocktail. The large size was huge and simply perfect, filled with onion, cucumber, avocado, cilantro, tomato and a plethora of shrimp in an on-point Clamato sauce. If that's not your style, they had a few other types, too. It was filling. That was all I got and with the free chips, served w bean, pico, and avocado sauces, I was stuffed (first set is free, additional servings are 2.95 each). My pals got the tacos with an interesting mix of chopped shrimp, bacon, and beef that surprisingly really worked. They tasted as good as they looked. It's always a win when you can try ingredients put together a delicious new way. Another friend tried the salmon, and she liked it. On top of it, the decor in this restaurant was super colorful and festive!! It feels exactly like the kind of fun place where you want to go have a good time. Even the chairs are painted up and beautiful. I noticed a very large round top in a private room near the entrance. It would be ideal for a party of 10-15 people, and you could all sit and see each other. They have a similar set up at Buca de Beppo you might have seen. Service was very good. Menu and our server were bi-lingual Spanish and English. I'd go back for sure. read more

Great lunch menu and great lunch! This place is NOT your typical Mexican restaurant. It's better. Great service and food. They have an updated menu much better than the last. I really loved the background music. Tried the Grilled Fish tacos off the lunch menu and wasn't disappointed. Omg y'all!! This is my favorite new spot on this side of town! I have been wanting to come here for a while and I am so glad I did! I ordered the chicken tacos on their lunch special for $8.99. My cousin and we're looking for some good soft tacos and decided to try this place out. They first served us some chips and dips. The dips weren't too bad but it wasn't the best. We got the campechanna cocktail. It came with shrimp, Mexican scallops, oysters, octopus, clams, green onion, cucumber, tomato, and Mexican cocktail sauce and crackers. It was pretty good, but I wish they add more oysters in it (came with only two oysters). Then we got a chicken soft taco, which was also okay (we weren't able finish it because it lacked some flavor). I don't think I'll be coming back here since it wasn't my favorite. read more

Got the oysters for happy hour and the $2.50 margaritas. They also brought us chips, Pico de gallo, beans and avocado salsa. It was not a very busy night and it was enjoyable. Too bad this restaurant is across town from us. This is a welcome alternative to the New Mexican restaurants around us. The prices are very affordable and everything tasted fresh. Huge draft DOS XX at $5.50, complimentary homemade chips and unique cold seafood dip and fresh pico de gallo. The refried beans are creamy, obviously made with lard and no lumps of hard beans. This is not New Mexican and no red or green here. We will be back. read more

Talk about fresh seafood! I came here for their raw oysters, and they were certainly worth the hype. It seemed like I was one of the 7+ parties that ordered a dozen that night, too! As of right now, they're one of the few restaurants that offers raw oysters for such a decent price too! It was $13.95 for 12 of them. I tried shucking oysters at home, but it was far too difficult and time-consuming for $1.29/each at my local Smith's. The oysters they served were HUGE and delicious, like I was hoping! I'm definitely coming back here to satisfy my random cravings for fresh seafood, particularly raw oysters! Yum!! read more

Mariscos La Playa is a nice family restaurant with a lot of space, clean and has excellent staff. When we were shown to our table we were quickly greeted by staff with chips and 3 types of salsa, shortly to follow our drinks appeared. The atmosphere is very colorful and family friendly. The tostadas de ceviche was flavorful and the serving size was huge. The mariscada caliente was very good. There is a mix of grilled fish, shrimp, scallops, calamari and octopus served with rice and tortillas easily enough food for 4-5 tacos. Nos ganamos la loteria con esta... We won the lottery with this one! The food is fresh, the restaurant is packed, and I went back to my roots this weekend at Mariscos la Playa. Though we are far, far away from the coast, a craving for ceviche led us here and it was a great experience overall. Service and price point for the amount of food is noteworthy too! I've been deprived of good seafood for a while now so when I bit into those crunchy, fresh tostadas it took me right back home, just the way my mom would make them. The fresh onions and tomatoes along with cucumbers were cut down to authentic measure. I wish I had more room for flan, but that will have to wait 'till next time at la Playa. read more

This is a surprisingly bright and charming restaurant. The wait staff is friendly and helpful. Plus the food is very, very good. However, they are terribly understaffed. It took 15 minutes for someone to take our order, almost 15 minutes for a drink refill, 40 minutes for our orders to arrive. And there were only three other parties seated. All together, our 1:00PM lunch didn't end until 2:30PM. I will be back so I hope to add a star for service. (March 2018) ----------------------- Went back the other night. It was pretty empty for a a Friday night. I was expecting to wait but there were just a couple of parties. Once again, we had to lure wait staff to our table. Everyone was extremely friendly and the excellent food remains unchanged. My mother had salmon covered with pico de gallo so spicy, it hurt. Once removed, she scarfed down that fish in under three minutes. I had a bite and can attest to how crazy hot it was, even by my standard, but holy hell it was delicious as was my steamed fish with peppers. Wow. I'd order mine again. Wife had octopus and hers was great, too. I had a funny moment of lost in translation-ism ordering a Bohemia. Waitress told me they don't serve "Bohemia." "But it's on the menu," I answered. "Oh, 'Bo(h)emia!" Ah yes, the Spanish silent h. Anyway, the speediness of the service has not improved. So I must give only 4 stars. However, if you have lots of time. Go here. We went to Mariscos La Playa thinking it was like or affiliated with Mariscos on Coors but it definitely wasn't. Who puts mayonnaise on their shrimp tostadas? In addition, the fish tacos were deep fried into rocks and they both were served on rice with French fries? Where's the frijoles? I actually wish I didn't even have to give one star because this is hands down the worst food we have ever had. Fresh Mexican seafood! My family arrived for a late dinner a little after 8pm. Even though it was less than an hour before closing and the place was mostly empty, the staff happily welcomed us. The menu is definitely very seafood focused, with many appetizers and entrees devoted to shrimp in particular. However, for those who aren't partial to seafood, there are enough chicken, steak, or black bean dishes to ensure that everyone can find something they like. I chose the Camarones Tropicales, shrimp with pineapple served along with a side salad (including avocado), rice, and fries. The shrimp was very fresh and everything was delicious, particularly the thick cut fries which might have been my favorite part. The interior of the restaurant is beautiful with bright colors and fun decor. It seems like this would be cool restaurant for a party. The food was simple, spartan, and honest. No frills. Not extraordinary, but above average for the context. There is an ASTOUNDING amount of variety on the menu, and the combinations are infinite. I very much enjoyed my meal, I very much enjoyed the people-watching, and I very much enjoyed the experience. This was perhaps the best meal I had in New Mexico -- the cheapest, and the most memorable. If this place was a beer, it would be one of those local lager/pilsners that is as cheap as a Pabst/Coors/Miller but punches up way past the pretentious IPA scene. Thanks Frontier.

What really set them apart was their papas - those potatoes were soft and super flavorful. Their red sauce was spicy and flavorful. The server brought out two fresh and hot sopapillas. It was so loud, it was hard to hear the person across the table. There were at least 10 other tables that they could have seated us at! It seems to me that this area should be used only when the restaurant is completely full. This seems to be a poor management decision rather than the fault of the servers or hosts.

I stopped by this place during my daughter's soccer tournament and decided to try a few dishes. We ordered oysters, shrimp ceviche tostada, camarones a la diabla, caldo de camarones, and chicken nuggets for the kids. The oysters were fresh and delicious--definitely recommend them. The kids gave the nuggets a 3 out of 5, and the ceviche tostada was decent. However, I wasn't fond of the caldo or camarones a la diabla because the shrimp didn't meet my expectations. read more

We stopped at Mariscos La Playa 10/24/2020 around 3 pm the service, food (Santa Fe shrimp, oyster, agua chile) and drinks (michelada and piña colada) were exceptional. Jael was our waitress. Portion sizes are much bigger than I expected, especially considering the prices were cheaper than pretty much any other similar restaurant in the area! This is Mexican food, not New Mexican. I love NM food, but I live in California, so I am used to Mexican food. This hit the spot. Salsas were good. Beans were delicious. I was so full! My niece and her husband loved the ceviche and announced they would return for more another day. My mother and sister didn't finish their orders of tacos, so they ended up taking lots of food home. Where everything fell apart was trying to pay the bill. I realize they were busy, but our waitress simply disappeared. We were seated by the kitchen and we could see in. She went in and didn't emerge for 20 minutes. I tried flagging down anyone to get the bill. Finally the bill came. I tried to pay her but she was carrying food to a table and didn't come back for another 10 minutes. That was incredibly frustrating. Good food. Decent atmosphere.
