Service is always stellar here at Mick's. Today when we stopped in for breakfast a little earlier than usual, Natalie didn't miss a beat and had my husband's coffee and water waiting when he returned from the men's room. When Elvira asks how everything is, I can tell that she really cares. I honestly think they have the best Fries in town, and their cheeseburger is super delicious with or without green chile. There is a lovely houseplant garden on one side of the restaurant that she tends with loving care. It's a place you can go and take your friends or family for a meal once in a while and be able to hear each other talk and take a breath together. My first visit to this charming restaurant. Lunchtime on October 15th. Greeted warmly, seated immediately even though it was fairly crowded. Friendly and attentive wait staff. I have to laugh at myself; I was expecting chili to be on the menu, but it's New Mexico style dishes with Chile. Lots of menu choices and prices are the low side. My dining companion ordered grilled cheese with extra butter and they did exactly that; I had the taco plate. 3 tacos (one each of chicken, carne asada, one of beef). Sides of refried beans and rice. They do a great breakfast with the standard French toast, pancakes, Omlettes and eggs any way you like them, Now, in addition sometimes they have delicious barbecue crafted by a neighbor. I have heard great things about Mick's and their huge portions and I was not disappointed! I got the shocker which was delicious and definitely worth the price. This delightful, and actually quite spacious, restaurant recently celebrated one year at its current location on Candelaria a block West of Carlisle, pumping out delicious food five days a week. (Sunday and Monday, seek sustenance elsewhere). Mick's is known for their generous portion sizes and fair prices as much as for their smooth, flavorful chile, which always tastes great, if not especially spicy. Breakfast burritos are massive, and always delicious, no matter which meat you choose (or, get The Shocker, which has it all). Perhaps the most indulgent of all is The Summit: 3 scrambled eggs, hash browns, beans, sausage, bacon, ham, chile, and cheese, with an additional egg on top, smothered in fries. The carne adovada here is also top-notch; indeed, there are few places that do it better. Today I had the carne and huevos for breakfast, with the eggs over easy, plus a side of rye toast. I requested plenty of lettuce and tomato garnish, and the kitchen was happy to oblige. Everything was fantastic. For $0.99, the two thick slices of rye toast, crispy and buttery, was a great call. One of the things that I admire about Mick's is that it's an inviting, inclusive space. Blue collar, white collar, young professionals, retirees, families, friends. Everyone is welcome here. The crunchy taco shells weren't really crunchy by the time we were eating them, but I feel like that should be expected when it's holding carne and chile. The Frito pie was also very good. I had been reading some local reviews so I put this place on my list to visit. After walking in the waitress's greeted us and were very attentive. Our water glasses were never was more than half empty. The chips were fresh and the salsa was hot. The food came out and my daughter had the cheese burger and I had the open faced green chile cheese burger Christmas style. It was awesome. They know how to make some good chile. I have a group of friends that I meet for breakfast once a week. We met twenty five years ago at a bagel shop on San Mateo that no longer exists. Enjoyed one anothers lives and have continued sharing work, families, retirement, etc. Currently, our group has been meeting at Mick's Chili Fix. They have a basic breakfast and lunch menu...no dinner service. Independently owned. The owners are delightful and accomodating to the little changes in menu we throw at them. Prices are very reasonable and the portions generous. The chili is delicious and the beans to die for. You can have beans and potatoes with eggs!!!They even went out and purchased blueberry syrup for one our group. Simply mentioned it was his favorite & it was there the next week. I got Wednesday Special; Smothered Burrito. I had several choices. I opted for Carne Adovado but had it topped with Green Chile. Both plates were big-really big! There was a lot of really tasty Chile and cheese. The Carne was good. My complaints are: My plate was only hot in the center of the burrito. The fries on partner's plate were lukewarm and not crispy. If you want to walk into a restaurant and have a waitress openly and loudly reprimand you, Micks is the place to go. We had heard so much about this restaurant and so we decided to try it. We listened as the older waitress read the riot act to a customer. Wow! We had already ordered but we watched as five people walked out the door. The older waitress told us that we could have a seat on the bench while she cleaned it. She came back with a towel and wiped off most of the table leaving a big spot of food still on the table.
