I visited this diner on Feb 8th in the early morning. The hostess/greeter needs a new job or needs to fix her attitude. She was so rude. She wanted to seat me in a cluster of people and I politely asked could I sit in the back where there was absolutely no one sitting to avoid potential exposure to COVID in the cluster. She obliged, and upon seating us just threw the menus on the table and walked away. I encountered her later and asked where the ladies room was and she just ignored me. The food was amazing! I really want to like this place since it's a hometown staple, but it just didn't live up to my expectations. Their remodel is gorgeous. The seats are comfy, their bar is beautiful, and their Art Deco adds a stylish touch. But the prettiest decorations can't help their food. I'm so surprised that they didn't upgrade and downsize their menu. I get that it's a classic Jersey diner, but that doesn't mean they should be. Anyways, the food is just tasteless. Lipstick on a pig. Rebuilt and maybe even new ownership but the same old mediocre food and less than stellar service abound. The place looks really nice, remodel was well done. Problem is the food and service. Stopped in for breakfast and had a breakfast wrap which was not good. My wife's corned beef hash was equally disappointing. The server was very fast and attentive but didn't explain anything about the different options you should choose when ordering so in the end not very helpful as our dishes came out with a bunch of sides we didn't want and there are "no substitutions". Me and Marky Mark Twain go way back like flapjacks. It's just down the street from my childhood home and I usually go back every once in a while whenever I'm in Union. Its' great for a lunch with mom, a quick dinner on the run or a late night snack. They do some things really well at Mark Twain in terms of diner food. I'm looking at you pasta salad, taylor ham sandwich, cheese burger delux, and turkey club triple decker. As long you stick with the diner staples, you'll really enjoy your experience at Mark Twain. If you stray from them, beware. They've got some weird things on this menu and if you're ballsy enough to try them, you're likely to be disappointed. So stay true to the diner experience, get some breakfast food or a burger or a sandwich and I guarantee you'll enjoy a nice, basic diner meal at Mark Twain. If you're looking for bells and whistles, look elsewhere. read more

We love the Mark Twain! Truth be told, there is some food that I don't love and others I do, but it is the people who keep us coming back. The owners all know my family and give our daughter extra attention. The waitstaff, too, has extreme patience for our daughter, not to mention my sometimes picky order. Faves: chicken souvlaki platter (tzatziki is awesome), reuben,eggs/omelettes, french toast, almost any soup, hubby likes the burgers and the meatloaf. I don't really care for the pancakes...too heavy for my taste, but our daughter loves them. So I get the french toast if I want something like that. This used to be my favorite diner in the state, and certainly one of my favorite places to go. Ever since management changed hands a few years ago, however, the quality continues to drop. The food has gone from great to good, and the service had followed suit. TLDR - genuinely bad food, everything served cold, get chain fast food instead. Stayed near the airport for a night and decided to stop by here for dinner given the (relatively) good reviews. The restaurant was only about half full when my table of two got there, but we were told to be patient with the servers as they were overwhelmed. As a past server, no problem I get it. Each server had 3-4 tables but I don't know what they had to do behind the scenes. The problem was the food. Had mozzarella sticks as an appetizer and they were good. But the French dip was straight up bad. The French fries were as room temp as something could be. Some were cool (not "cold" but cooler than room temp), the cheese on the sandwich was clearly single sliced and not melted at all, it was more of a homemade sandwich style. It was clear the food was not sitting under a heat lamp to cool down because the cheese and meat were never warm to begin with. The actual dip was cold. But it was necessary because the meat was so dry I needed water to swallow the bite without it. No one who worked there seemed like they wanted to be there so any complaint would have fell of deaf ears. Just do yourself a favor and go somewhere else, any of the fast food places nearby would be better. read more

This being my 2nd time at the Mark Twain for lunch, I ordered the Lunch Special, Tuna on a bed of salad. Tuna is one of fav lunch meals, unfortunately the "TUNA" served at Mark Twain was some other substandard fish and mixture of whatever. Ii have never seen Tuna that had silver skins in it that overwhelmed the appearance! The taste was horrible and I asked the waiter to take it back, this is something I rarely if ever do. I politely said I rather not have something else and was treated poorly by the young man. At leaving, the check included the special which should have been removed, the manager just smirked when I questioned our check, I paid it but warn all to request unadulterated tuna when at Mark Twain. read more

Then we called the manger(70 year old woman) over to our table and we showed her the raw burger and she said to just eat around it then she let and rolled her eyes at us. A fixture for years, the Mark Twain Diner has kept a good reputation, using that very basic commodity of business: hard-working staff and good, friendly service. . .in addition to good food, of course. The counter staff is as busy as those servers on the floor, and the new entrance arrangement makes people flow more efficient - as well as providing a more enclosed bar area. I have been coming here for over 25 years. The last 3 visits here were disappointing to say the least. The food is mediocre and hit and miss. Sometimes things are good, like simple breakfast orders and more often the meals are just "ok". For the price these days I at least want food that is made with care, well seasoned and fresh. This has not been the case. I have had dry food, bland food, a dessert with mold and then ensuing arguments with the owner. My 6 y o granddaughter loved the look of a piece of cake so of course we got it and took it home after our meal to be enjoyed with tv before bed. When we opened the container the cake was moldy. When I called to let them know, they argued about it. Bad customer service from the owner, not once but on 3 different occasions. I alway try again, I mean mistakes happen. But 3 strikes---Out! Last visit I called and ordered a meal for pick up. When I arrived not only was there no meal but no one admitted to taking the order. I was about to leave and get something somewhere else when the owner insisted I must have called a different diner. He was insistent that I show him on my phone. I did so...outgoing call, his diner number. He questioned each woman working nearby and they all denied being the one who took the call. They looked petrified. He then proceeded to continue a now heated exchange with me. I was shocked by his stubborn insistence and reminded him of two other instances that I let pass. I still gave them another try after because like I said mistakes happen. He denied all of it, Loudly! I should have just walked out when they did not have the order. I allowed that man to look through my phone and that was a waste of my time. This place is an institution here. He will not be affected by this review but I felt it needed to be said. For the prices the food is very good. I've been back several times. This diner has a great variety however now that I'm pescatarian there aren't many choices. The soups are good especially on sundays. And I love that you get multiple sides with sandwiches or wraps. Most of the appetizers I've had were pretty good too. The staff isn't bad my favorite waiter is no longer there. Its usually cold which is sometimes disappointing. I'm not too fond of the music selection, its hit or miss. Great diner, even though it's not 24 hours (but the days of 24 hour diners seem to be past us for the most part, sad face). I always opt for the pasta salad - it's so good. Even if I get a meal that doesn't offer pasta salad, I ask the server for one. They're good for tried and true diner options: Tuna Melt, pancakes, burgers, chicken fingers, etc. Just your run of the mill local diner. Wow...we even met a modern day Mark Twain in the next booth over! Very authentic! Our food was very tasty. My wife had the BLT and she described it as on of the best ever! I went a bit on the healthy side and indulged in a bagel and lox platter. YES...they used freshly sliced lox, none of that pre-packaged stuff. The staff was very good. Ordered French Toast - other than perhaps a very QUICK pat on one side of the bread in egg- it was the absolute worst French Toast I have ever had. One side was only cooked, and the other side, no sign that it even touched the grill. The side that was not cooked had absolutely no sign of egg. Came here today for brunch and it was packed! Totally worth the 3 minute wait to get a table. I ordered the gyro and 3 eggs breakfast and the tzatziki sauce that came with it was so good! I ordered that with a side of pancakes and they were light and fluffy! My hubby got the breakfast with sausage, bacon and a big slab of ham along with French toast. We both ordered sunny side eggs and hash browns which were cooked to perfection! Good diner hash browns are hard to find these days. Being said, their hash browns have a golden crisp outer layer! The French toast was good too. It's more on the cinnamon-y side. Coffee was also great!! Service was great and so were the portions! Both our breakfasts were loaded and less than $10 each.. They do have special breakfast specials as well but I think til 11 am! Love that it's newly renovated too! Will definitely be back to try their other menu items! read more

Great local NJ Diner in Union, NJ that serves not only great food but makes you feel like you are eating at your favorites relatives home on a Sunday evening by the fireplace. This diner really deserves more than the 3.5 stars it's averaging. We come here at least four to five times a month and have never had a bad experience. The food is great, the prices are super reasonable, and the service is good (great if you get the right server!). We've never ordered anything we didn't like and their pasta salad really is as good as other reviewers say it is. Honestly, I think this may be one of the best diners in New Jersey. My only recommendation is that their burgers could be a little meatier. I was a tiny bit disappointed when my Texas Burger came out with a thin patty. We were there one of these Sundays for brunch. The breakfast food in general was good (eggs, toast, bacon, home fries, etc). The problem was their service. It was strange and awful. All started with the server: I ordered the breakfast special and asked for juice (I'm pregnant and am not drinking coffee), so the waiter says "I will give you the large juice, ok?" I was like, ok, thinking he was being nice to a pregnant lady. That was ALL he said about the juice. My husband and I finished our meals and asked for the check. There were 2 things: they charged my husband for a special too (when he had had just the regular stuff with no drinks) and the large juice was almost $4!!! Of course my husband said "nope". So we call the waiter and tell him about both things. He says I asked for the large juice. "No, sir, you said you were giving me the large juice. I didn't ask for it and you should've said it would cost extra". And he kept insisting with us!!! He finally went away and took a very long time. I could see one of the managers arguing with him. Then he came back with the new check without the juice, but my husband's meal was still being charged wrong. My husband told him to please correct the check. He left again muttering and then after a long time the manager that was arguing with him came over to our table. My husband explained that his meal was charged wrong and the manager says "Well or you pay like that or you pay for the juice". My husband said we were not going to pay for anything that we did not ask for. End of story. Then the manager started to blame the server saying that he was lying to him. And finally discounted the $2 that my husband was being overcharged with. Unfortunately that left a taste bitter in our mouths (quite literally), so we probably won't go back or even recommend the place. Fantastic. I tried going a few months back, but they had been undergoing renovation. The interior is really nice, with a modern twist.. a lounge and bar style area too. We came at 2AM on a Saturday into a Sunday. The place wasn't too crowded. The portions here are disgustingly big. We split a nachos appetizer, which is colossal. I ordered the Greek sampler for $12.99, and it came with a greek salad with gyro meat, pita, and a huge spinach pie in the center. I'm not sure how anyone human could possibly eat the whole thing. It came with a soup, and I thought it was a good value. From reading through the menu, the prices seemed VERY fair throughout. Our waitress, Amber, was fantastic. Helped us decide one which desserts to order. The cheesecake was phenominal. Although only my first trip there, a very good impression. The service was horrible and we will not be returning. The server didn't give us any refills without first being asked, did not provide proper utensils or proper service including checking on the meal or offering dessert. Our server spent the majority of the time standing behind us chatting with the manager the entire evening. When we paid for our meal, we let the woman behind the counter know that we were unhappy with the service, she did nothing to amend it.
