It is truly a privilege to obtain a pastry from Green House. Objectively, these the best in the bay, but that's not the whole story. Green House is imbued with the passion and kindness of the woman behind it all (Rachel). I admire her for her dedication, patience, and generosity. She is very clear via IG regarding dates, times, drops, and a la carte items - and yet people continue to be rude/inconsiderate --- looking at you guy that was in line with us when asked if it was your car double parked in front but collected your box and went about without a response. I don't mention this to put this gentleman on blast but to relay that there are ongoing challenges to running a business out of one's home in a neighborhood. Rachel handles this with such grace. I think operating on this small scale is a big piece of what makes Green House so special. It's not just the pastries, but what goes into them and the community. She uses seasonal and home grown ingredients. Frequently other local merchants join in bake/pop up days. A big piece for me, after years of supporting Green House, is coming early to queue and get to know fellow pastry lovers. This is not a chain/box store experience. Is it super fast and convenient? No. But it offers an experience that is much more rare these days. And seriously, the quality of the food is insane. I normally rave on about details but it is not needed here. Preordering was competitive, but totally worth it. They have an excellent reminder system for when orders go live, which helped me snag two boxes! Everything I tried was delicious--especially the croissant and the pull-apart bread. I picked up my Thursday order around 9:40 a.m. There was already a line, but it wasn't too long. I realized the line was for people without preorders who wanted to browse the house/store. I really wanted to wait and check it out myself, but I had to get back to work. Since I couldn't go in, I grabbed my boxes and headed out. The box pickup line moved quickly and was super easy. Guava Cream Cheese Pain Suisse - 8.5/10 Really great guava flavor and a nice balance with the cream cheese. Not too sweet, super flaky. Jalapeño Cheddar Monkey Bread - 10/10 My favorite. SO good. Savory, cheesy, a little kick from the jalapeño... just perfectly done. Passion Fruit Curd Donut - 8/10 Loved the flavor. The curd had that perfect sweet-tart balance without being too much. Spicy Potato Brioche Bun - 7/10 Comes with pickled vegetable slaw, Kuali salsa macha, and garlic crema. The slaw was a little overpowering for me, but the garlic crema was honestly the best part. Every single pastry is made with so much thought, testing, and tweaking. There is no bad order. Rachel loses sleep over every detail, but the details are what make it so so good. I've ordered cakes for no reason other than - these cakes are the best in the world. I'd fight anyone over that. I've sat on the curb across the street from her house shoving monkey bread into my face because I couldn't wait to get home. Her husband is often helping get people their orders and sometimes other neighborhood businesses show up to sell coffee and flowers. This is what a small business should be, rooted in the community and everyone comes to support. Anyone frustrated with the process of getting their hands on one of her pastries is missing the point here. My friend group has made a fun game over who wins the lottery when pre-orders drop. I've been following Green House Bakery on Instagram for years. For various reasons, I never made it up there or pre-ordered until today. Reading reviews and recent posts, I anticipated there would be enough extra things to purchase a la carte if I got there before opening, arrive 1-1.5 hrs early to be safe. I got there @9AM and there were less than 20 people already in line. They opened earlier today, the line started moving around 945AM vs 10AM. I got the last cinnamon roll, and an onion and gruyere croissant in addition to the mini passionfruit pie I pre-ordered (pick up towards the front of the line). I was at my car @1010AM. Everything was really good but really recommend the pie when it's available. If I was sharing with others I would've bought more. Staff (all women) were nice, and parking wasn't challenging like I expected from the reminders to not double park. PS there was self serve coffee at the base of the front door walk way. I have been a long time customer of Rachel and I LOVE her baked goods. They are absolutely fantastic, made with love, pieces of art. But you know, they're not for everyone. Don't come if you're going to complain about the process of ordering or the line for pick up. The pre-ordering process does feel like Beyonce tickets. If you want Bey tickets, do you complain??? No. No you don't. You figure out how to get it done. Second, there are typically opportunities for you to wait in line and pick up a la cart. Get your favorite book and your lawn chair and show up half an hour prior to opening and you'll be in a good spot to get what you want. It's a residential neighborhood. Don't pretend to know how to run her business and offer dumb ideas like partnering with another business to make pick up for you easier. Do you complain to Bey that doesn't make parking easier? No, no you do not. Uber, Lyft, carpool, or just park in a proper spot and walk. It's not hard. Cake orders - you can place them when they are released. Be and adult and follow the instructions. SHE DOES NOT TAKE SPECIAL REQUESTS. If you want a Baker that can manage you being high maintenance, there are plenty out in the world. If you're someone who appreciates edible art that is complex and flavorful, moist, and worthy of a celebration or just a random Tuesday, this is your place. Don't squabble about prices. I don't care what other bakers charge. Rachel does the math, she's worked hard to master her craft, supplies are insane, and whatever the price is, that's what it is. The cake is the whole purpose for the gathering and my friends gush and make all the good sounds and give me the biggest hugs for being so generous. I have sat on the sidewalk for two hours on a Saturday morning in lawn chairs while my kids 2.5 & 10 play. We wait for pasties. And then I buy $100+ worth without an ounce of regret or guilt. I know what I'm tasting. I'm taking the loving effort of many hands that spend oodles of time working on flavors and texture. I'm relishing the 3am bake of cookies or the rise of the cinnamon rolls. I am in wonder that in a residential neighborhood in a not fancy part of Oakland there's a green house with a red door where cakes are decorated that remind me that the world still is good and kind. My husband and I have been ordering from Green House for long enough to recognize Rachel out in the wild. We've done birthday cakes, holiday cookie boxes, dinner rolls and cinnamon buns, as well as her (anything but) standard pastry boxes. I feel pretty safe in saying if she's offered it, we've tried it. Everything, EVERYTHING, has consistently been the gold standard, blue-ribbon version. I don't know how she does it. It's not just the perfect bakes it's the flavors - her vision is incredible, swirling together sweet and savory, every bite is the perfect bite. Of course I wish she'd open a bakery but that's not how it works, and that makes it even more special. I've only missed out on one thing I wanted to try (come back soon, peach sweet rolls!!). I've tried nearly everything - their donuts, pies, cakes, croissants, cookies, etc. They are phenomenal every single time. When the stars align, I bring their baked goods to family and friend get-togethers and they are always the crowd favorite. You can pre-order online or wait in a first come, first serve line depending on their bake schedule. Their bake schedule is posted on their website and Instagram as well as sent out via their e-mail list. I recommend following them on IG plus signing up for e-mail/text notifications to stay updated. Re: online pre-orders -- another review is stating that you can add things to you cart prior to their drop time on Hotplate. This is NOT correct - you have to wait until 8:00:00pm (or whatever the drop time is) to add things to your cart. You HAVE to be fast in adding things to your cart (as in within seconds) -- that being said, I don't understand why people feel inclined to leave bad reviews about this when the system clearly works for everyone else lol. Once items are added to your cart, they are secured for 5:00 minutes while you check out. Sometimes others abandon their cart or remove things from their cart which makes them available to add to your cart again. Again, you have to be quick but I've been able to secure something basically every time I've tried (which is a lot haha). Other things to note - street parking only and there is street cleaning on 1st/3rd Thursdays. If you are coming to wait in a FCFS line for Saturday bakes, be aware that others line up 1+ hour ahead of time, and your wait can be that long depending on your place in line. Green House Bakery is a small, woman-owned business that operates out of a little green house (hence the name!) What I love about it is also what I hate about it - because as a small operation, they are able to produce a limited amount of pastries. That means you have to be diligent about the drop times so you can actually snag a preorder. I love it (bc who doesn't love a little exclusivity) but also hate it because I've missed drops since it is so competitive. If you are not able to get a preorder, then you will have to wait in line - which is insanely long. Additionally because of the limited capacity, the drops are restricted to single days usually for a few hour window - which means if I'm out of town for work or something, I'll miss out on some really good food. This review is specifically for the passion fruit creme pies which Rachel makes with passion fruits she grows in her own yard. I am absolutely obsessed with passion fruit and love love love that it is grown locally (literally!). I tried for a few weeks to get a mini one and finally snagged one to try with some friends. The mini is probably enough for 4 hefty slices - but since we just had a big kbbq meal, we could have split it into 8 thin slices. OMG its freaking delicious. The crust does kind of crumble but it is so buttery and delicious with a nice crunch element from the coconut shreds as well. It was so good, I KNEW I had to snag one for Thanksgiving to share with my family. She was selling full size pies for Thanksgiving and let me tell you right now, even for my asian parents who stereotypically don't like dessert ("not too sweet" and all that), they liked it! That is huge. The pie balances the tart from the passion fruit and sweetness of the pie really well. Unfortunately, I think passion fruit season is coming to an end (and probably she has a limited supply since its her own yard) but I'll be thinking about this pie for months to come...until next passion fruit season :) Anyway - this pie has convinced me that the rest of her pastries (and prob her cakes!) are probably equally tasty, and maybe better! This review is strictly for their pastries. 3 stars is not necessarily bad. It means average. Not outstanding, which is what I thought about their pastries. Strawberry and Vanilla Custard Doughnut: Suer dissapointed in the small filling. Could barely taste the custard and there was just a dollop of strawberry jam. Needs more filling. The Doughnut itself was too chewy. Would have liked a fluffier or even melt in your mouth Doughnut. Raspberry Pistachio Fig Leaf Danish: needs more raspberry because the pistachio really overpowered this whole Danish. Almost tasted like a baklava Danish. Wasn't a fan. Caramelized Onion Crossaint: It did have Caramelized onions but I would prefer them to be more Caramelized and also the Crossaint wasn't buttery or flaky like I would have liked. This Crossaint tasted like something I could get from any bakery. I want to experience a flaky well layered Crossaint, which this was not. I've been to 6 or 7 bake sales so far, and I love their pastries. We're lucky enough to have quite a few excellent bakeries in the Bay Area, and this is definitely one of them. The bake sale starts at 10, and I've been arriving an hour early, about 8:45/9 every time, and they've had the full selection. Recently she mentioned (can't remember if it was an article or on IG) that you don't need to queue up as early anymore, so I arrived at 10 yesterday and they were already sold out of a couple of things I wanted by the time it was my turn. So I'd still suggest getting there early if you want your pick. I think the preorder option is great, but I live alone, and there are only so many pastries I can eat responsibly in a few days, so I prefer to just buy 2 or 3 a la carte. Everything I've had so far I've been pleased with. The prices are in line with other specialty bakeries, maybe a dollar or so more than I expected for some things, but I will say the quality, flavor and unique combinations makes it worth it for me. Favorite things so far have been the apple cinnamon roll (not too sweet and I liked the saltiness), the oat/butterscotch/pecan cookie (almost didn't buy it, but it was out of this world) and the pumpkin pie danish. Parking isn't really that bad, you will probably have to park further up or down the hill or around the corner, but I appreciate the extra steps considering all the carbs I will be consuming. read more

This is advice for anyone else who wants to order from this place, because there were so many unexpected and frustrating aspects to the process: First, ordering opens Tuesday evenings at 8pm. Knowing they regularly sell out, I opened the ordering site exactly at 8pm, but apparently that was wrong, because everything was already in other people's carts. Apparently you have to open the site at 7:56pm (carts expire after four minutes) to add things to your cart and wait for payment to open at 8. Demand seems to be at least twice the available supply, because there's a counter of how many people are on the site, and I was waiting with 30 other people, refreshing the page waiting for five pies to expire out of other people's carts. If you want to order multiple things, you basically can't, because every item is on its own page, so you'd have to be refreshing each page separately to snipe something just as it expires. I had intended to order a few croissants, which they're famous for, but you can't do that - they sell preselected packages, and you can't add extra of anything, so if you want three croissants you'd have to buy three packages. You would think the package system would make pickup really easy, because you could have all the bags labeled with people's names and sitting out on a table, so it could be picked up in seconds, but that's not what they do at all. Pickup is between 10am and 11:30am on Thursday morning, which I assume means this bakery is only for people with flexible scheduled jobs. I have a flexible schedule, and it's great, but having pickup before or after work hours might be more convenient for most people. The pickup instructions twice warned against blocking neighbors' driveways, which makes sense, but that made me assume I could park on the street, which is actually wrong; this street and the next block have street cleaning twice a month from 9am-noon on Thursdays. So the bakery has chosen fully half of their pickup times to be during street cleaning when you can't actually park on their street. I don't think this was communicated well, because two people in line with me got parking tickets while waiting. Waiting? Yes; if you show up right at 10am there's about a 20-minute line of people waiting to pick up. Why does it take so long? Everyone is checked in individually on an iPad, and then their order is assembled. So rather than having everything pre-packed up and labeled with people's bakes for easy grabbing, everyone has to be processed individually. What could be different? There's a guy who does home-baked bagels in SF, and he partners with a local business for pickup, so there's more parking and everyone's orders can be bagged and labeled on tables, making pickup as fast as saying your name and him picking your bag up from an alphabetical line of bags. He can do it while talking to another customer ordering walk-up; it's super quick. There's a woman who runs a fruit box business in SF, and I think they're delivery-only now, but they used to do the same thing: everyone's boxes labeled with their name and alphabetically laid out on a table outside a local business, so it's super easy to pull up and pick up. I have a friend who does custom decorated cookies, and she also doesn't want to expand her business, so she has an order system where you email her what you want, and she assigns you to the next available slot on her baking schedule; that way she never has to bake more than she wants to, but you can order and get exactly what you want, without having to mess around with an ordering system that works like Ticketmaster selling Taylor Swift tickets. The baked goods were tasty, I just won't order again because it was so weirdly difficult to place an order and get it - I have to assume this is how this business wants the process to work, so hopefully this information is helpful if you want to jump over these hurdles to order from them. read more

No food is worth this wait! They opened at 10 am and I was in line at 9:50am. 2 hours and 10' later I walked away with the last two goat cheese galettes and four cookies. Everything else was sold. There was no limit and many people were walking out with multiple boxes. Was pleased to meet Rachel but this was a sad use of my time! Needs a better system. I have been fortunate enough to snag a few boxes on different occasions and some of the items are delicious especially the cakes. However some of the other items are constantly burnt. I let it slide the first time , then it happened again and times after that. If it's burnt, please do not sell it. Today I ended up trashing half the pastries. You can see my photos. I wouldn't wait in the ridiculous lines for anything here but if you're close by or it's convenient for you to pick up a box then sure try it. Fantastic family operated business! Please be respectful to them as they run their business out of their home. There will be a line that starts around 8AM when they start selling at 10AM. Leave your first world problems at home, so either wait patiently in line to buy you baked goods or just keep yourself and negative comments/suggestions at home. I have stood in line at their home twice already. Did my research and got there early each time. I get there around 8:30AM and I left by 10:30AM. Definitely worth the wait for the items you will devour. I have so far tried their buttermilk donuts, the apple cider donuts, the chocolate croissant, the fruits splendors, the cardamon bun, the cinnamon, the chocolate chip cookies, the butterscotch cookies, the blackberry scone, the brown butter cake and the passion fruit tart. I will say overall all very delicious baked goods. A lot of them are made with puff pastry. I would personally skip the scone, it was more too buttery biscuit than scone for me. My personal favorites are the cardamon bun, the cinnamon roll which I think has an orange glaze which is delicious. The passion fruit tart though on the pricier side was delicious. I love passion fruit, nice and tart. The star of all the baking is the brown butter cake with mascarpone cream. OMG! The best slice of cake ever. Located near Mills College area. You will be in a sleepy neighborhood. Please be respectful of the neighbors. You will be parking on the streets and the neighbors will come out if you block their driveways. I've been trying to order these pastries forever, but most of the pick ups were on Saturdays when I was out hiking. So I was really glad when they started doing pick ups for Thursday. I never imagined that it would be so challenging to place my order online even after setting my alarm for 8pm to get first dibs. Every time I'd go to tap the button to place an order it would flip to other people placing theirs leaving me out. Finally, I was able to purchase a box of goodies and I was super super happy. However, I did have to drive a bit to go pick it up on Thursday morning, therefore getting myself to work late. Then there was a line of people to collect their orders. As I drove away with my order, I was telling myself, "yeah I'm probably not going to do this regularly. I spent $50 for 5 items, had to go out of my way and stand in line." I promised my daughter I would bring some of the treats home, so I just quickly grabbed the savory pastry to eat for lunch at work. Now I may be changing my song and dance. That savory pastry was so amazingly good that I can't get it out of my mind. I don't really remember what exactly it was called, but it had like chopped up figs and nuts, and maybe mushrooms with this little harissa drizzled over it with a bit of goat cheese, and a little bit of greenery on top. 0MG it was incredible. The lemon meringue pastry was really good as well as the maple bread. The cookie was good, but I wouldn't stand in line for it again. And I've yet to eat the danish. So, maybe I would do it all over again just to get that savory pastry. I wish there was a store that I could just walk into and buy a couple of them quickly, but I get that it's more cost-effective to work from home and do business the way they're doing it. Believe the hype. Read about this place in an article, so wanted to try. Pre-ordering is like trying to get Burning Man tickets- you have to log on at a certain time, and order. Everything was sold out within 2 minutes- not kidding. As I wasn't fast enough, wrote to ask if this was normal. Rachel, the owner, let me know indeed it was. However, in the morning, she kindly wrote again saying there was a large box cancellation, and I was welcome to purchase it! It was my lucky day!!!!!!!!!! These pastries are some of the most delicious that I've tasted in the Bay Area. Flaky buttery pastry dough perfection, with delicious seasonal flavours. Today was my first time trying, so was pleased the large box of 6 sweet and savoury There was a pumpkin spelt cake with cream cheese icing, a butternut squash danish, an apple caramel pastry, almond croissant, cinnamon roll, and a thyme and guyiere pastry thing. I only have one stomach, my husband is diabetic, so I just had a small sample of each item. So good! I want to try some cookies next time. read more

Phenomenal baked goods from this lovely pop up! We preordered the large box of pastries earlier in the week ($28). This came with 6 different pastries - brown butter donut (so fluffy!), savory croissant (lamination without sog from the filling) , Meyer lemon blueberry scone (so much lemon flavor! And kept its crispy edges), passionfruit brioche (can't go wrong), choco olive oil cake (moist cake and lovely salt kissed light frosting), peanut butter toffee cookie (crisp but not too hard, with just enough chew and sandiness) What impressed us was the fact that each of these pastries were very different, and that each was 5 star quality speaks to the immense talent showcased here! Although the line out the door and super-fast sell out times mean that Green House Bakery probably doesn't need any more glowing recommendations, this place is the rare example of a business where the experience actually exceeds its (considerable) hype and popularity. I recently placed a cake order with Rachel, and they were out of this world delicious (or, in the words of one friend, "criminally good"). Delicate, perfect frosting-to-cake ratio, inventive flavor combos, beautifully decorated - I could go on. Plus, Rachel is a really lovely, community-focused, and refreshingly real person. This is NOT a large-scale commercial operation. You can't order cakes on demand, at the last-minute, or with a lot of customizations; if you're looking for something along those lines, another bakery is probably a better bet. But if you're just trying to order the hands down best cake you've ever had, look no further. read more
