A kind employee walked us through the menu. They are famous for their Shack burgers, but started out as a hot dog stand. We ordered and paid at the counter, although they also have kiosks for ordering as well. I had a single Shack Burger and fries. The fries are hand cut and super fresh with a nice crisp. The fries are large enough to share. The Shack Burger is good, comes with cheese, lettuce and tomato that were fresh. My husband had the Flat-Top hot dog which is made from Vienna beef. The large dog is split and grilled. Fixings were limited to ketchup and packets of mustards. He would have liked some onions and relish. Otherwise, the dog was very good. The staff is friendly and attentive. The food is made fresh so takes awhile to prepare. They give you a table number and deliver the food to your table. The restaurant has about 20 tables inside and a dozen outside on the patio. On the patio, there is water for your trusty canine. I was surprised to see they serve wine and beer. The wine comes in cans. I did not try, as it was early in the day. A nearby food pantry was collecting donations. A portion of the daily sales went to the food pantry. They support the community. Internet signal was weak in the restaurant, but maybe that will improve with time. I did not see a drive-through. There was plenty of parking in the dedicated lot.

I had heard firsthand that this cafe is dope, and I had read reviews that this cafe is dope, and I finally got to visit it myself today. You know what? For a hospital cafe, this place is pretty dope. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. I peeped what they had for breakfast: they have a "breakfast station" where you can scoop out your own breakfast foods onto a plate. Each item is a different price. For instance, scrambled eggs and breakfast potatoes are $1.29 per scoop, bacon is $0.89 per strip, biscuits are $1.09 per biscuit. Then you take your plate to the register, and you pay for all of your scoops and slices and individual things. Lunch begins at 11 a.m., at which time the deli counter opens, and you can get a made-to-order sandwich, panini or wrap. There is also a pizza station; a grill station with things like hot dogs (only $1.99!), cheeseburgers and potato wedges; and an entree station, where they have a special meal every day. On the day that I visited, it was salisbury steak. If you don't like any of those offerings, there's also a grab-and-go refrigerated area with food like parfaits, hard-boiled eggs, sushi, and microwavable meals like arroz con pollo, of all things. Carmel doesn't know how to be anything other than Carmel, and it shows in this hospital cafe. Where can you get a hearty sandwich packed with multiple slices of turkey, tomato, red onion and lettuce for less than five bucks? And all of the condiments that you want, waiting for you at the condiment station! Whatta deal. The great prices at La Verna Cafe could account for the old timers I saw posted up at a big table in the cafe. They were all hanging out, enjoying food and coffee, but they didn't look like they were patients or waiting for a patient. They were there for a good couple of hours. When it came, we could not find any actual avacado, instead there was a very thin (and brown) layer of pureed avocado. We asked the waitress if it was missing and she pointed and said No, this is it. We asked if we could have an actual avocado for the avocado toast and were told that they did not have any that were ripe. We assume the last ripe one went onto the salad we had ordered. They did bring out a side of the pureed avocado but it was clearly old and did not taste right so it was not eaten. Unfortunately, this experience and the waitresses handling of it, left a bad taste in our mouth (literally for one of us) and put a damper on the beginning of our day. After today's visit, it's time. While I rather expect that all of IU Health operates within the same food supplier, I don't think there's any question that Atrio is a notch above the standard offering at downtown Indy's Methodist. I have heard that Atrio has declined a bit in recent years, however, I've generally been happy with this affordable,mostly tasty dining option and a dining room that is beautifully decorated and kept clean. Atrio is located in the atrium on the first floor of the hospital. It's a little confusing upon entrance. If you're familiar with Sonny's Pizza, an IU Health tradition, they have a location here that is kept directly inside Atrio and available for lunch or dinner. Atrio offers gourmet soups, pizza, seafood, desserts, a salad bar, a made-to-order grill, some deli options, and a pretty decent breakfast menu (I will say I think breakfast is their weak point). They have all the usual soft drinks, Mighty Leaf tea in the fountain, and a variety of coffee options (I'll note that a Starbucks recently joined the atrium as well). Being in a hospital, the cafeteria is very accessible and employees are quick to assist. Even employees on a break are friendly and helpful - today, for example, an employee obviously on a break offered to clear my tray as she left. Atrio is surprisingly quiet, though it does get much busier for lunch. I was there between 8am and 9am appointments today and had a nice, quiet half hour. Parking is free at IU North. Accessible parking is directly across from this entrance. If you're visiting, this is definitely a decent option. I'd dare say it's a pretty good drop-in option as well.

This restaurant was packed. I came at lunchtime, and there was a constant flow of people in and out. It was hopping. I ordered the two-meat plate with white rice. My meats were the steak and the pork. I also got a side of pork egg rolls. And to top it off, I got the spicy teriyaki sauce. My food was so delicious. Every item was flavorful, fresh, and tasty. The sauce had a little kick to it. It had me sweating a bit, but that is how I like it. I hope this restaurant opens some franchises on the South Side soon.
