We used to like Marlborough Tavern, but our recent take out experience was dismal. The food was ready on time, but was really bad quality. The Mac and cheese was the absolute worst, like prison food in a black take out container, not seasoned or flavored, clearly not baked, no breadcrumbs or bubbly cheese top like they show in photos. Why not make it in a metal container, so that you can bake it, and then put a lid on? The pierogies were overcooked and hard and had a slightly rancid flavor like the oil was bad. The meatloaf sandwich had one mushy slice of meatloaf that didn't fill the bread, with cheese, but the caramelized onions were missing. No condiments, but I guess the menu did not specify there would be any so that part was my miss. It would be nice with a garlic aioli! I had to eat it with ketchup at home. Oh, and their ketchup? Gross too! Luckily, I had my own Heinz ketchup at home. The bread it was on was very good and well grilled. Maybe next time I'd see if I could just order some grilled bread and cut my losses. I would be hesitant to go back. Also, very oddly, the majority of the photos posted to yelp in the last year are of items that are NOT on the menu!! I would have loved a pasta dish with crispy chicken, or some ravioli, or penne à la vodka, or a flatbread, or some tacos...but alas, none of those are actually on their menu. Very weird. read more

The live tavern music really made the place dead the Saturday night I went. Was not expecting live music but when we walked in I really questioned who booked the individual. First time here, just passing through and the menu options looked good when searching for places. Enjoyable clam chowder, not thick but good flavor. Fried Chicken with potatoes and green beens was the right choice for me. Really enjoyed the potatoes. Biscuits needed more butter. Girlfriend had pirogies w/o the bacon. I tried one and wasn't a big fan but that is something I don't typically eat. Nothing appealing for dessert so skipped it. I would eat here again but the live music needs some updates. read more

The owner of the MT was willing to shut down the restaurant for my daughter's celebration of life on a Saturday. They were very kind with ALL the matters that I was facing. I was so grief stricken. They were so professional. I menu they prepared for us was great and I have always enjoyed the food there. The ambiance was not quite what we were looking for though and we went to a place my girlfriend had suggested. It turned out to be much more intimate than MT and we were able to display pictures of our daughter for everyone to see better. I would consider them however in the future for a bridal shower or something else. Great people, good food and reasonable prices! read more

The Service was the best part of our lunch at the tavern. The food was ok and the atmosphere was fine, but the place was very empty for a Saturday afternoon which was a red flag. We both ordered soup to start and only mine came out first and my husband's came out about 10 minutes later. Strike One. Then the food came out and it looked kind of sad and honestly, not worth the cost of each meal. Strike Two. Something sad has happened to this very old and well established restaurant where you knew you would get a really good meal worth every bite. Some classic menu items are gone, like the chicken pot pie, and the rest of the menu is on the blah side. Strike Three. The place could really benefit from a restaurant/menu makeover that is more appealing and affordable. Sadly, we won't be back anytime soon. read more

We stop in Marlborough Tavern around 3:00 o'clock PM on Saturday for early dinner. The $17 hamburgers with fries tasted like it was dipped in a bowl of sea salt after it was cooked. The firing oil for the fries was old because the color of the fries was dark brown almost black in color. The waitress was nice and helpful. I didn't recommend eating at this restaurant. read more

A fine place to eat but it's not going to blow you away. The ambiance is an odd mixture of flat, dull modernity with a splash of rustic. What you might expect from a leased space that you're not willing to put much time or money into personalizing. This carried over to the seating. Metal chairs at a table barely wide or long enough to hold a plate and your drink. The service was attentive, if also perfunctory. This air of good-enough carried to the food. I had garlic parmesan wings and a tavern double burger. The wings were fresh from the fryer and then had some garlic parmesan mixture dabbed on. You know when you have too much parmesan bits in something and you taste dry crumbles of it as a result? This was that. The tavern double is listed on the menu as a smash burger, but definitely is not. The patties tasted like Bubba burger brand patties, on a dry potato roll. The fries were plentiful and tasty, fried and salted just right. If you're in the area and want a functional meal where you can say "that was food" afterwards, the Marlborough Tavern is your spot. read more

What used to be a local gem has succumbed to mediocrity. Stopped in with my son for a quick dinner. Ordered the calamari appetizer, which was over breaded and overcooked. The salt and pepper seasoning promised in the menu was barely detectable, and undetectable goes for the calamari as well. Cannot recommend this app at all. For mains, my son had the Nashville hot chicken sandwich, which he said tasted funny. And this is a kid who loves Nashville hot. I noticed the bun was dry and falling apart, and he said it was pretty dry. I had the Mexican taco bowl with chicken. The only thing remotely Mexican about it was the oversized, cold, and somewhat greasy attempt at a tortilla bowl that came with it. Service was terrible; we had to ask for drink refills every time, and the lone check in from our waitress came approximately 17 seconds after our food and before we had taken a bite. Overall, everything was bland and middling at best. It will be a long while before we return. read more

We then overheard the wait staff talking about how a customer found a wipe and wrapper in their food and the other wait staff responded "again?" Tonight I was craving a burger and I didn't feel like driving to my typical burger place, so I decided to try one from here. I am super picky about my burgers from restaurants either they are over cooked and lack flavor or they aren't cooked to my liking. Marlborough Tavern exceeded my expectation and very well may be my new favorite burger spot I only wish the topping was selection more expansive BUT I can't complain because the American Tavern Burger is a classic you can't go wrong with! I placed my order online and found it very easy to select my à la cart toppings (cheddar cheese, sautéed onions, lettuce, & pickles). I elected to have my burger well done and crossing my fingers that it wouldn't be over cooked. Spoiler alert it was perfect! I was also nervous that my takeout experience would be a disaster as my track record for great takeout experiences isn't too great. The fries were in a separate container which I think helped them from getting soggy on my 10 minute ride home. I pulled into one of the curbside spots (not clear if I was supposed to select this on the app when placing my order) and called to say I'd arrived. While they didn't ask for my name, they did bring out the wrong order at first... but I was also early for my pickup. At the actual pick up time they came back out with my order and apologized for earlier. All that to say it was still a positive experience and they verified my name before handing me the wrong order. I quickly devoured my burger & fries as soon as I got home. The portions were big, and the amount of meat in the burger was massive for the price! Good thing I hadn't eaten lunch and opted for an earlier dinner. I will be returning for takeout and hope to dine in again soon. read more

The bar staff walked by us no less than 5 times... all we needed was a "hey guys be right with you!" As we got up to leave even the two gents next to us cried out "someone please get these people some service?" Sad...the old MT was fantastic! The best chicken piccata I had ever had! When I heard the Marlborough Tavern was going to open again, I was excited! I was hoping for a new, cozy regular restaurant to add to our rotation. The atmosphere is nice, nothing wrong there. We sat in the bar area. I was warm and cozy, not too loud even though it was fairly full. The menu was pricier than I expected. A few selections for my fellow vegetarians out there. When I saw Vegetable Risotto on the menu, I was happy!! Sadly, the meal was a disappointment. It was rather void of any flavor other than truffle. ( I found something very chewy in the dish too. ) It was creamy, but lack the cheesy flavor or Parmesan tang I expected. My husband ordered a hamburger. He said it was greasy. Yes the venu has changed and while it's nice in the bar, it's been modernized but still a very cool place to go if the following didn't happen: A. The glasses? Every glass we receive at this place from water to drinks to beers are quite disgusting. Not the first time. Not acceptable. Look at your glasses folks. Hold them up to the light. Those aren't scratches or soap film. They aren't washed properly. Worse we have ever seen. B. Food was mediocre. Not sure what else to say. C. Waited a very long time to check out. What a gem! I was visiting CT for the weekend and searching for a place to chill at for a cocktail. There were not many options to pick from, but I am glad I chose the Tavern yesterday afternoon. It was absolutely beautiful inside. So clean and charming. The woman behind the bar was lovely to my husband and I. She made us amazingly refreshing and fun cocktails. My husband and I met our adult children there last night for dinner. The dining room was toasty warm with a crackling fire in the fireplace. The tavern was built in 1760 and lots of original features remain. But the food is what I'm really here to write about. The menu is Pub Style but brought up a notch. Son #1 had a meatloaf melt that he enjoyed. Both my husband and our second born son had the Mac and cheese. Each added some extra toppings and ate every bite. I had that nights special, shrimp risotto. I was quite tasty, with the addition of a few shakes of salt. Our server was attentive and pleasant. It was a nice night out. I'll be back. read more

First time at the Tavern. We were seated outside on a pretty hot day but there was a nice breeze. Seating was comfortable and the wait person was very attentive. Ordered the lobster roll and fried chicken sandwich. Lobster roll came packed with plenty of claw meat with French fries and butter on the side. The roll had been slathered with butter and grilled nicely. Butter on the side was nice to have to dip the overflow lobster in and then pour it over the roll. French fries on both dishes were fried nice and crisp. Chicken sandwich didn't have excess batter and was fried very well. Still juicy but cooked completely. Dessert was their apple cobbler with vanilla ice cream. Tasted good, plenty of nuts and crumble on top. Could have used more apples but would t turn it down again. Social distancing was maintained with all staff in masks. Definitely will return for another meal. read more

Big variety of food, uniquely crafted cocktails with a wide selection of beers, there is something for everyone! Can not go wrong with the fried Pierogis for an app and the flatbreads (usually the specials depending on the day). One of our favorites in the area, would highly recommend stopping in. read more

So glad this place opened! These towns need this place - honestly best around. Decor is on trend, but still connected to its historic roots! The bar area is so well designed and decorated. Ordered a burger and some apps one night as well as drinks. Drinks were well made and the beer selection is fast and New England friendly. However, the burger was so salty. I know their fries are salt soaked which is cool, but a burger that salty was a turn off. Hopefully they fix that soon. Prices are okay - I think a little pricey for the area, but I hope they do well business wise. We live 15 minutes away and haven't been here since the new owners and renovations. The look and atmosphere is not warm quaint and inviting as it use to be. The updates are not warm and welcoming at all if you are use to the Old Marlborough Tavern. The menu if that is what they call a menu leaves A Lot to be desired compared to what we to be. Service was....when I get a chance. They open at 3pm we were there at 3:45 on a Wednesday. We waited way to long for someone/bartender to ask us what we would like to drink or even say I will be right with you after she walked by us three times. When I asked for a menu she said "you can use your phone to download our menu"!!! No no no I want a "menu" I don't want to scroll a menu on my phone. So sad. As for food I can't tell you because we didn't order any. Good luck with whatever you decide after looking at the limited menu. read more

My husband and I visited on a Sunday night. We couldn't decide what to get so we ordered a bunch of apps. Everything was perfect. Perfectly flavored and perfectly cooked. We ordered drinks which were made perfectly. The ol fashion was not the overly sweet new version, but delicately balanced. The atmosphere is wonderful. They left some of the old beams in the ceiling and then opened up the ceiling in the bar. A nice fire place makes it cozy in the dining room area. Advice: check the date on the reviews. After a busy afternoon of packing and moving, we wanted to treat our crew to some libations and apps. Marlborough Tavern hit the spot. Our waitress, Yolanda, was great. We enjoyed delicious wings, fries done perfectly, artichoke dip served with these flavorful, crunchy tortillas that I've never had anywhere else, roasted Brussels sprouts that rival anyone else's. This is my second visit to the remodeled Marlborough Tavern. I really love what they did when they remodeled. They tried to preserve some of the antiquity of the original building in the main dining room and created a nice open space with a mix of old and new elements. It's getting too cold out at this point to sit outside so we choose to sit in the bar area as it wasn't very busy. I thought the first time we dined there the menu was more extensive, but maybe that's due to COVID? They did have specials, though we didn't order any. Our waitress was very pleasant and attentive. The hubby and I like places with a good beer selection, and there was plenty on tap or in cans to choose from. I had a steak salad and the steak was a little rare for me which made me realize that I hadn't been asked how I wanted it cooked. The hubby had some short ribs that he enjoyed. The food has been pretty good, but I feel like it's a bit expensive for where it is, what it is, and the food. While all of those things are 'good', I don't think they add up to $100 for 4 beers, short ribs, and a steak salad. It's close to us and we enjoy the space, so we'll go again and see if that feeling persists. read more

I've been here a couple of times and it's been consistently good. They've got some fine stuff (NY Strip, Lobster Roll, Salmon) and some fun stuff (Mac and Cheese, onion rings, cheese and crackers) and some routine stuff (burgers, wings, salads, chicken nuggets for the kids). Solid beer and drink selections, too. Good service and a nice historical nature about the place (a former stagecoach stop built in 1760 and you can read the story on their website if interested). Also a clean and inviting place. The one downside: It's a little on the pricey side ($33 for steak and fries; $15 for a burger). read more

My wife and I went there for dinner one night because someone gave us a gift certificate there for Christmas. I must say, it has improved VASTLY since I was there last. I ordered fish and chips and my wife ordered the salmon. Our waitress, Kim, was very friendly and prompt with our orders and the food was spectacular.
