Just spent the weekend at Marriott Tempe at the Buttes, and I have to say, this place feels like a true resort even though it's only about 10 minutes from the airport. The property is older but nicely remodeled, and that worked in its favor because the water pressure in the shower was strong compared to what you get in newer hotels. The fitness center was impressive for a hotel gym. It had everything needed for a solid workout. Beds were comfortable and the room was spotless. The only thing to note is the unique layout: since the hotel is built into the Butte, the floors can be a little confusing at first. For example, the lobby is on floor five, the pool's on floor three, and I stayed on floor two. Once you get the hang of it though, the design and views make it a stunning property. We made the most of the beautiful Phoenix weather. We even got to relax on the patio for cocktails. If you're looking for a full-service Marriott with a resort vibe that's close to the airport, this is definitely a top choice. read more

We are currently here. There was a cockroach on our roof. We called and told the front desk. She asked if we would like it removed. Great question. They sent a maintenance man who tried to grab it with, of all things, pliers. He missed. A lot of times. It flew off the ceiling onto our clothes, around our cooler, behind the desk while the maintenance man is trying to use these little needle nose pliers. It would be hilarious if it wasn't disgusting. Roaches carry diseases and it was running all through our stuff when you could have used spray. Even a boot would have worked better. UPDATE: WE ENDED UP WITH 6 MORE LIVE COCKROACHES AT ONE TIME! I LITERALLY GOT THEM IN A CUP AND TOOK THEM TO THE FRONT DESK AND THE RESPONSE WAS: "It's just nature." When I pointed out the holes in the window caulking they said I could check out or get another room. The next room had 2 more roaches. We tried one more room that luckily was sealed and clean. 5 stars A Desert Oasis Gem! I recently stayed at the Marriott Phoenix Resort Tempe at The Buttes and it was an absolute delight from check-in to check-out. The rooms were spotlessly clean, fresh, modern, comfortable beds, and everything felt well-maintained and inviting. The service was top-notch: friendly, attentive staff who went out of their way to make our stay special. Shoutout to the front desk and housekeeping teams, they truly made us feel welcome. One of the highlights was the lovely patio area, whether relaxing by the pools or enjoying the outdoor spaces with stunning mountain and valley views. The amenities are fantastic: cascading pools, hot tubs carved into the mountainside, a waterslide for fun, and beautiful grounds that feel like a true desert escape. Everything exceeded expectations for a relaxing getaway close to the airport and Tempe attractions. One note for fellow travelers: The resort expansive and is built into the hillside, so there are plenty of stairs throughout the property, between the lobby, rooms, pools, restaurants, etc. It's gorgeous and adds to the unique layout, but if you or anyone in your party has mobility issues, consider requesting a more accessible room location or using the resort's golf cart/shuttle service where available. Such a breathtaking place. The views are stunning, the entire ambiance is absolutely beautiful. My husband and I came here for our 8 year wedding anniversary. The staff was very kind and accommodating, our room was beautiful, clean, and we even had a slice of cake dropped by for our Anniversary. There are a lot of stairs by the pool area but there is wheelchair accessibility. The pool was very clean, the entirety of the pool area was truly spotless. I'm not sure what everyone else was talking about. The water was perfect temperature. You must come here. We ate at the top of the rock and the service was immaculate, they made sure I didn't consume gluten as I have a severe allergy with a specific grain when made for alcohol. The staff here are incredibly friendly and attentive! During my stay, I had a couple of quick suggestions to improve guest convenience, along with a minor issue regarding the ice machines. I really appreciated that they proactively check in via text to see how everything is going. When I mentioned my feedback to the manager, Khushi, acted immediately--having the team look into it right away and even offering some credits for the inconvenience. Although the little hiking trail attached to the hotel is more of a stroll up a steep rocky hill. The pool spaces are great and service was good. Dad had mentioned a really interesting restaurant inside of a hotel where it had a waterfall that he once took mom. And finally we kinda sorta made it. We got to Marketside at the Buttes, around 1:30 but unfortunately found they close at 2pm on weekends. Discouraged we decided we'd just come back again a bit earlier. The bell hop who had helped us find the place noticed us leaving so soon and asked. When we spoke to him he led us to the cocktail lobby. Apparently the bar does their food after they close! And so we sat down and gave the menu a go. Dad loved their lobster bisque from when he last came with Mom but unfortunately it wasn't on the menu, nor was the soup of the day. So we both settled on the California chicken sandwich with a side salad. I also got a virgin Lavendar Collins since it looked good while Dad got iced tea. We knew it was going to be expensive its a place that has a waterfall behind our seats and a spa below us. But it was worth every bite. It was so fresh and delightful. Honestly if we find out when they are serving the lobster bisque I wouldnt be surprised for a round two over here. The bartender was also so sweet and kind with us the entire time! read more

I used to LOVE this property. I've traveled the world and as a Titanium Elite member, this was one of my top 5 favorite places. It's been a little over a decade since my last visit and I am so disappointed it is in such terrible condition. I can't believe I've been recommending this place to people who are in Tempe for baseball spring training next door. There is no better location to be this close to the stadium, but it is not worth the price tag in this condition. There were many details that really add up. It's a big property so you can't easily take your luggage to your room. We didn't have a vehicle with us so we asked the lobby for a ride. And I'm immediately went to go get the keys to the van to drive us. He was very friendly over. The van was very dirty inside. There was trash shoved in the cupholders and it needed to be vacuumed in badly. The spas weren't hot and the one closet to our room was closed for repairs that I doubt will be happening soon. (This heat issue happened my first visit here about 16 years ago, but had been fixed at subsequent visits). They didn't seem particularly clean and the tile was looking old, dated and like it could be drained and scrubbed clean. The jets did not work in the Jacuzzi we tried. They did not appear to work and the other two that we walked up to and chose not to get it because they were also not hot (people were in the but they weren't on which is rare with people using the spa in my experience). There was tons of vegetation everywhere on site that needs to be cleaned up, removed, or replaced. We saw a vent (or filter) in a tree and a random pool net in the middle of a weird area it clearly didn't belong. I know wind can do crazy stuff in the desert but this is all visible if the property was being maintained. It wasn't windy while we were there, so how long has it been like this? Irrigation lines show all over the property. This could've happened over time or from a storm, but regardless, it looks like they've been like this for a while and because it's so widespread it makes it hard for me to believe it just happened. I could really go on and on because the landscaping used to be so beautifully manicured here. If I didn't know better, it probably wouldn't be as big of a deal to me but this place used to be amazing. The outside area is beautifully terraced but many, many lights were burned out, making the steps hard to see at night and dangerous. Rocks and gravel on sidewalks in some steep areas that need to be swept. Some decorative planters near the pool area and walkway to the lobby are broken and crumbling. All the cushions outside of guest rooms were faded any many mix matched (I get it - it's the desert, but buy a lighter color that won't fade or replace them). The pool had many broken lounge chairs and they are also mix matched. At least separate the chairs on different sides of pool so it's not obvious they don't match (no, not by design, I'm sure of it). Most lounges looked very worn out and had sag to the material. Seems like there used to be more chairs to sit in certain areas. The shower was hot one night but not the next day. Weird because it was around 11am, not a real busy time of morning. The towels are not by the shower at all and no place to hang them without getting the floor wet. (My rooms on the past had a better layout from my recollection. I do remember nicer and larger showers in general but it was also a long time ago. The restaurant in the lobby was mediocre but I don't see a place to leave it its own review. Drinks were weak the two times I ordered. The chips, guac and salsa were all premade. Salsa and guac weren't particularly good or flavorful and chips came out cold. For $17 they could've warmed the chips, added a fresh diced tomato and some seasoning to the guac. The other food wasn't much better but I won't get into that since idk if even affiliated with the hotel. * I found restaurant on yelp. It's under the lobby bar, however the hotel is referring to it as "At the Rock." Will move this review there but leaving it here so others can see the name. The employees have been friendly so far. On a positive note, the gym is nice. A bit on the warm side arm side but nice equipment and big windows opened the space. A good amount of equipment for a hotel. Supposedly this hotel is supposed to have renovations "soon" but they really waited too long. Many of the problems are just no upkeep. Even a very old hotel is nice if it's properly maintained. I hope this hotel gets it together. I still enjoyed it for nostalgia reasons but wouldn't have been happy for the price if it was my first visit. read more

Doing a staycation. 2 nights. Check in was kind of off... but no problems. As a Marriott Gold I thought I'd at least get a water... but whatever. We drive back down to the room. It was a lovely room. I liked having the Patio. With a 4 on check in... we rushed to go to the pool to relax with a drink. Didn't realize no pool service after 5. That is very strange to me. We have stayed at some of the best resorts in AZ.... And have always had service at least until 6:30-7. Pool area was dirty after the all day activities. Next day.... Bright and early... you have to get up early as it's AZ! Can't get a cup of coffee. Really? Coffee shop opened at 8? No coffee available in the lobby for guests. I think that's terrible. Finally get coffee and head to the pool . Same dirty tables... dirty deck area and glassware and garbage. I can't believe that this isn't done at 5 am. Should be hosed down and cleaned and ready to go by 6 am. Very disappointed. Back to the room. Come back at 10 am to start our pool day. Maybe grab a mimosa. Nope... can't do that... bar doesn't open until 11. What? That's really ridiculous. The water station on deck has warm water. Finally at about 11:30... Annalisa decides to appear with a menu. Zero personality. Zero. She does her job... nothing more or less. Ordered food... it was okay. When asking for cups of ice for our warm water.... We were met with distain. Every resort I have been on provides us with pitchers of fresh ice water and always refreshing it. This was just nit enjoyable. The property is beautiful. No doubt. Will I return. We booked this resort for my wife's birthday with our kids, driving 9 hours from California mainly for the pools. Unfortunately, upon arrival the pools were closed and muddy from mountain dirt washed in by rain, a clear design flaw. For a property that advertises pools as a highlight, this was a major letdown. When I asked for at least breakfast vouchers to make up for it, the front desk refused and only waived the $17 resort fee. After paying $700 for two nights, that was insulting. To make matters worse, water drips were scattered throughout the hotel, making the place feel poorly maintained. Overall, what was supposed to be a special family celebration turned into a very disappointing stay. For the price we paid, the experience and customer service fell far short. read more

This resort was beautiful. It was the highlight of our girl's week trip. We stayed for 2 nights. We checked in early but they wanted to give us an upgrade. Our room was on the second floor and had 2 queens. I was a bit turned off by the bathroom layout; it had the shower and toilet separate from the sink/vanity area. We were delighted that our room had private access to the outside pool area. Unfortunately, there was a wasp nest in our patio so we had to call to get someone to take care of this. After our friend called the front desk, they had someone spray it in less than 30 minutes. That being said, I come to the reason why I will probably not stay here again. The room we stayed in was set at 72°. We set our room at 68° and could not figure out why it kept creeping up. We called the front desk and they told us it's automatically set to this and that someone would come to fix it. No one ever did. It was very warm both nights and we all woke up sweating. There were signs everywhere to direct you. Their pool was lovely and the hot tubs were hot and jetted. They have an open bridge and a small 30 min hike trail on the compound. It is naturally decorated inside and out. In conclusion, we all had a wonderful time. We just had wished we had a much better experience actually sleeping in a cool air-conditioned room. read more

The hotel is in a nice natural setting. The registration and restaurants are separate from the hotel rooms and you can drive up to the area first and then go to the parking area for the rooms or you can park by the rooms and take the elevator to the 5th floor and walk across an open bridge to the registration area. There are umbrella holders but there were only 2 umbrellas so they could be only on one end of the bridge so you could get wet during the rain. The people at the registration desk were pleasant and helpful. The parking for the rooms was okay but if you parked under a tree when it rained, your car would get covered with leaves and dirt. When you get off the elevator to go to your room, there is a locked door at the front of the hallway that you use your key to access. The room was clean and had the basics. It would be nice if they would provide outlets for USB cords but there were electrical outlets around the room. There was a small fridge (empty), a safe, desk and chair. There was another chair with ottoman that was old and uncomfortable. The bathroom had a shower. The shower, soap and shampoo in large containers for everyone to use. I prefer my own amenities personally. The shower floor was slippery and there was no bar to hold on to. The swimming pool was quite large and goes under the walkway bridge with a waterfall in one area. There is a spa also. The area around the pool is natural rocks and pleasant. read more

Shocked at the level of cleanliness and service and amenities for such a "high price resort". There is not enough staff! Elevators to rooms dirty and beat up, check in is just like a podium with a person behind it , no pool drink or food service after 5, the one restaurant market Cafe is constantly closed, the pool area is constantly trashed and I mean trashed!!! No one cleaning up the garbage bin was overfilled and falling trash everywhere , towels all over the place, hard to get service at the outside bar and the inside bar was soooo chaotic we didn't even bother. For the cost you definitely do not get your money worth! The spa if you can get ahold of someone is dismal. It is like they just gave up and let the people run wild here. I have had better amenities, food, drinks, pool, staff at way lower level and lower cost then here. Was very disappointed as i was expecting to have an amazing time here especially for being "high price upscale resort". Yes the pool views were nice but with barely any shade and the most jinky beat up pool chairs with wild kids jumping off railings and the bridge with no parent control nor any staff member around to stop the craziness. Came here instead of the AZ Grand so i wouldnt have the run amock kids . Defintely not relaxing not quiet crappy furniture trashy areas , dave your money!!!!! This place is over priced for what you get ! The staff in dining was unprofessional and not welcoming at all . The place is designed horribly to get to everything . The hot tubs were cold and smelled like urine and the carpet in the room was sticky in places . Not at all what I was expecting , I had picked this place by the look of its pools and the lounge chairs were not maintained my friend's son had to screw a screw back in the back part . I've been part of Marriott for over 20 years and have stayed at many of them throughout the country and the world. I was rather shocked to see a Marriott is this condition. Definitely not up to the standards of a Marriott. Walked through the resort and pool area and saw so many needed repairs. The planters were mostly dirt and needed cleaned up which made the place look even more unkept. The halls and meeting spaces smelled musky and some of the chairs in the lounge areas were very worn and filthy. I came here to look at it prior to booking my event. I will not be having my event here as originally planned. I hope that someone within the Marriott management team visits this place soon to see the condition of it. Came here for brunch and was a little disappointed with the service. No bartender inside and had to order food to go at the restaurant downstairs rather than having a waiter tend to us and everyone one else on the patio outside. However, the view of Tempe and phoenix is awesome and the pool area is nice as well. read more

3 1/2 star experience. Check in experience was quick and easy and everyone was pretty friendly. It's a pretty long walk from the main lobby to the rooms. Probably about 8 minutes to the closest rooms and 15 to the furthest. The room itself was nice and clean and large enough. However the WiFi in the room was horrible. Kept cutting out while trying to do work or stream tv. The tv itself didn't work (turned on, but didn't play anything or connect to any apps). And the air conditioning kept making a really loud banging noise every time it kicked back on, so loud that I thought it was doors slamming in the middle of the night. I called to have it fixed (the phone in my room didn't work so had to call from my cell) and they said they'd send someone to look at it but never heard from them again so I assume that was just normal (or they chose not to deal with it). It was fine but nothing special and some definite short falls I won't be staying here again. read more

This place is a sham. It might have been high class and modern back in the 80s but now it is warm down and warm out. The decor is old and it has clearly not been kept up to standards. The main areas try to give the appearance of class but then you cross the "sky bridge" to the rooms which more closely resembles a motel by the highway. It is part the hotel falling woefully short of expectation and part the rooms being so outdated and not taken care of, but there is just a feeling of "ick" when being in the room. Not sure if I'm more embarrassed for or frustrated with my colleague that booked this for us at $410 a night. It isn't worth $200 a night to stay here. this place really is a subpar (considering the price point). Awful. Shame on Marriott. read more

This hotel is an oldie but not a goodie. We chose this place based on the Marriott website giving it a high rating...the rates are cheap for a good reason. The pros are if your'e a Marriott rewards member and need to stay in the neighborhood with short drive to the airport...and you're in desperate need of a place stay here. If you just want to enjoy the restaurant and the lounge with a view and great food and drink...then come here. If you want to enjoy some peaceful time in the pool or jacuzzi with a spectacular Valley view (in the late afternoon) then come here. The grounds are nice too. But If you expect a modern updated room...then skip it. Sadly they have not renovated since I dont' know when-probably never. Popcorn ceilings, old moldy bathrooms...in need some major reno. If you're lucky enough to get a view of the mountain hopefully you can sit outside and enjoy the view-unlike us on our last night when some "neighbors" took our chairs and put them on their patio! WT....unbelievable. And the housekeeping dept. only comes every 2-3 days? Ugh, so you have to call ..."Hello, can we have some more towels please?" The next day: Ring Ring, "Hello, can we have our soap refilled and can someone pick up our trash?" and on and on and on...no thank you. Friendly service and wonderful views in the breakfast area and bar and delicious food. But overall, in the summer its packed full of families and locals enjoying the great rates but not sure I'll be running back. read more

Great resort convenient to almost everything in the Phoenix area. We visited during move-in weekend for ASU. I guess we were a little late in making reservations for somewhere close to the campus as they were all booked. That turned out to be OK for us because we got to try out this amazing resort. And, it turned out to be nice to get away from all the activity neat the campus. The weekend started with an awesome greeting when we arrived Friday. The service and friendliness continued on that trend. We spent some time in/around the pool, which is really nice. There's a couple pools, and several hot tubs. A nice poolside bar sits in the middle of everything. The gym is well-appointed with a great view of the sunrise if you wake up early enough. Only a couple reasons why this isn't 5 stars for me. First, the rooms are a little run down. The toilet in the room needed a new rubber stop, so it ran a lot (until you either reached in and set the stopper or really shook the handle), and it was loud. The pocket door to the shower/toilet was hard to move and wouldn't close all the way. Next, the resort is right next to I-10. If you're looking for a quiet, peaceful outdoor setting, this isn't the place. It's beautiful for sure, but it is not quiet. All-in-all, great experience. I'd stay here again for sure. read more

They have a mediocre buffet that you'd literally find at a Days Inn and then they tell you it's an extra $6 versus the "continental" if you have a breakfast voucher !!! We had our wedding here so we stayed here for three nights. It was a blast! We got the president's suite and it was a dream! It is huge and was perfect for me to get ready in on the day of our wedding. We even had guests over to hang out in because it's that big and comfortable. The hotel itself is so beautiful. You have great views of the mountains and the sunset. The pool is clean and somewhat heated during the winter. There are two jacuzzis. The staff is always around and tries to help with what you need. There's both free and valet parking. If you get a chance to stay here or have your wedding here, please do! read more

In fact, as soon as we walked in, we contemplated switching hotels. Don't be fooled by the cool location atop the butte. We only stayed here because of the cool pictures of the restaurant online. Got tricked. The building is extremely old. From the 7 foot hallway ceilings, the popcorn ceilings in the rooms, the old dirty furniture, the musty moldy/tobacco-y smell, and the dirty shower grout, there's no mistaking the age of this place. And this gal did not age well. I'll add it's also the only place without blackout curtains --plantation shutters are no match for the strong AZ rays. The only plus is that our room was pretty well insulated from sound. So we slept well. 1 extra star for that. Note that we were on the inside of the "resort." The outside facing rooms will probably have tons of freeway noise. Well overdue for a facelift, I would not recommend anyone stay here. It's old and dingy. We stayed here over Fourth of July weekend for a staycation. The rooms were like a standard hotel room. I loved their bath products especially the large pumps of shampoo and body wash which smelled really good. The service at the pool was awesome. Kina was always around and ready to take our orders. The first day we tried shrimp and carne asada tacos. The shrimp were really good and so were the beef ones but the latter were soggy. The next day we just stuck with shrimp tacos but this time they didn't give us as much shrimp on either of the orders. The chicken fingers were kind of slimy on the inside, not a fan. The pina coladas were really good, not too sweet. Two of the margarita's we ordered that weekend were delicious but the third was really bad and tasted like straight lower shelf tequila. The pool atmosphere was older adults and families with children. The view from the pool is beautiful. They brought around frozen grapes one day. The next day they brought around frozen towels to put on your neck. There was a manager going around checking for outside drinks. So don't bring a visible cooler with you to the pool, leave it in your room. I did not like the food at the Top of the Rock restaurant but I will write a separate review for that. We are Starwood Gold Elite and this usually comes with a room upgrade and a late checkout. They said we got an upgrade but it was the same size room. They wouldn't give us any additional late checkout at all. Even though it cost the same for a room with 2 beds (for 4 people) and a room with 1 king bed (for 2 people), they would not give the extra 2 wristbands for the room with 1 king. So if you want to invite 2 friends to meet you at the pool for a bit during the day, just get a room with 2 beds and say you have 4 guests. This doesn't make much sense. We just stayed at another Marriott in Phoenix which give 5 wristbands per room, regardless of the number of people in the room. read more

This resorts needs to update their security systems. We went to AZ to re-charge our souls with something different. From having a pleasant evening to waking up with a call from the front desk telling us that our wheels were stolen from the property. So sad that these thieves are hurting so many hard working families financially. I gave this resort a two-star, for the outside property grounds and their pools.
