I've stayed at this hotel before and it used to be a great place, which makes this visit even more disappointing. The condition of the property has really gone downhill. The fourth floor looks terrible -- there are empty, broken-down rooms and the hallways feel neglected. The carpet on both the fourth floor and first floor is in very bad shape and looks like it hasn't been maintained in a long time. Inside the rooms, the flooring is actually popping up in areas, which makes the whole place feel worn out and poorly maintained. Overall, the hotel just looks very old and neglected now. The elevators are another concern. They make loud noises and honestly sound like they could break at any moment. There is also an unpleasant smell in parts of the building. When you get off the elevator and walk toward the lobby, you can see construction going on, which only adds to the messy and rundown feeling of the property. This place used to be a great stay when we first came here, but now it's honestly pretty shameful to see how much it has deteriorated. Checked in fine... Later arrival after spring training baseball game. I thought all was going to be awesome... I had confirmed days prior to arrival and there is a note on all my reservations. **down allergies family** attention to detail is the Bottom line! I am a platinum elite bonvoy rewards member and appreciated the warm reception from the front desk staff... So first thing is first.... I have a serious down allergy. That means with down feather pillows that I come in contact with it could lead to a hospital trip. It was listed on my reservation.... always is... Didn't happen. I took pillow down to the front desk and dropped off. Aamil and the lady upfront apologizing... They were not the cause of my frustration. I do appreciate them and their service this night.... especially because they were pouring my drinks when I sat at the bar!! I thought an apology would happen at some point from management...not so much.. I will clearly chalk this up as a fail for Moxy Hotels.... as this seems to be missed by several of the Marriott chain hotels...and I continue to be loyal...(head scratching I know) The 2 star rating was given because the check-in experience was having me at zero stars...but the evening and morning staff working (Aamil, Kiara) was superb!! I really wanted to love the Moxy. The fun vibe, old-school arcade games, and outdoor pool activities looked perfect for my teenagers. Unfortunately, reality had other plans and we checked in and out within 45 minutes. We did not stay. First impressions weren't great. The parking lot is full of massive potholes, and several lights don't work, which made the property feel not only rundown, but also not safe or secure less "trendy hotel" and more "surprise obstacle course." Inside wasn't much better. There was an emergency exit sign lying on the floor with the red exit lights still on which felt more like a movie set than a functioning hotel. Cove base was falling off the walls, and the elevator ride felt like a little trust exercise I didn't sign up for. Cleanliness was the final deal breaker. The hallways looked poorly vacuumed. Our room greeted us with a pretty awful smell, water coming up through the bathroom flooring, visible mold in the shower, and a refrigerator that looked like it had lost a serious life battle. I wish I would have taken pictures because the photos on the Marriott website are deceiving. What we saw in person looked nothing like the polished images online. Honestly, I would be surprised if this hotel would pass basic inspections. To make matters worse, I've now left two messages for the manager that have yet to be returned, which only adds to the frustration. I truly thought this would be a fun hotel for my family. So I used dayuse.com for the first time to book this hotel for 10 am to 10 pm. We had a flight leaving at 930 pm out of PHX and it was the NFL playoffs and I wanted to watch the games, we had our 11 year old with us so couldn't really spend hours and hours at a sports bar so decided to go this route so we had a place for our luggage and somewhere comfy to hang. I would say it was sort of worth the 110$ we paid but it went by faster than I imagined. I mean we really only ended up being there for about 7 hours and unfortunately the TV in our room wasn't working so I had to sit in the lobby (which is actually SO CUTE) and they put the game on for me there, and also provided me with complimentary drinks because of that, which whatever nonalcoholic peach drink the bartender made me was absolutely delicious. Shoutout to him. Pool area needs some TLC. Chairs are getting worn out but it could be amazing out there....and also the pool is not heated so that was an unfortunate "perk" to not get to use. Overall I am not sure how a sleepover would be at the hotel, our king room seemed adequate and the bed was comfy when I sat on it. But I can't vouch for noise or anything. Review based on 9/21/24 stay. Was suppose to be 2 nights but after the first night we went elsewhere. I hate giving bad reviews but this hotel has been the absolute worst hotel experience I have had in my adult life. I would consider this more of a motel but with doors on the inside than a hotel. There is no hospitality from the front desk employees upon check in or even when we checked out a day early. The first young lady did not call my daughter over when we checked in, she just looked at her, did not give directions on where our room was located, did not give a warm send off. When she came to give us new card to the second room she literally just handed it over and said nothing. The girl who helped us check out was on the phone when we walked up and had an attitude with the person on the phone and when she helped us, no welcome, threw our room keys, didn't ask if there was any issues, nothing. Both of these girls should not be representing this establishment. The first room we got was dirty, had a used wash clothes hanging in the bathroom, desk was not wiped down, there was stuff all over the floor. I was shocked the beds were even made. The second room was cleaned and beds were comfortable but you can hear so much noise from the main street in front. There is a family of bird living in the side of the building that made noise on top of the street noise all night. There are no amenities in the room, like a fridge or microwave, no dresser, no closet, no coffee maker, not even bottled water. The parking lot is beat up and needs work. The first elevator sounds like it's gonna break down, go to the other one down the hall for your safety. The only positive I have is when we called about our first room being dirty, the gentleman who answered was nice and he felt really bad, maybe he is the manager so he cares a little more. This place needs a serious make over in hospitality training. We will never go back. I'm sure they are use to dealing with rude people all the time since it's so close to the college but don't be rude to nice people who haven't been rude to you yet. read more

Stayed 1 night 1.17.26 This hotel has been ridden hard and been put away one too many times. Located about a block away from some of the ASU dorms or school buildings so its probably been a party hotel for a lot of years and it shows. Not a good reflection on Moxy/Marriot brand. Most likely an independent motel for many years before becoming part of Marriot family as the overall look/feel of the hotel was unlike other Moxy's i stayed at prior (Seattle and Portland). Public areas and hallways are just beat down, falling apart and very dirty. Carpets reminded me of the carpets in one of the most run down casinos in the sketchiest part of Las Vegas. Lobby area is very large and not the worst part of the hotel by any stretch. Bar had only 2 beers on tap and only one (Peppermint/Chocolate Ale...YUCK) was valid for the much hyped "welcome drink" or you could get the same watered down japanese vodka cocktail the other Moxy hotels i stayed at in December '25 offered at their bars. They did have a local craft Mexican larger on tap that was very good. You just had to pay if you wanted it for your first drink. When i walked in i saw 2 pinball machines and 2 multiarcade machines in lobby which i was super stoked on but when i finally tracked down some quarters to play, it turned out all 4 were out of service/broken. Rooms were FAR bigger than any other Moxy hotel i've stayed at but weren't very clean. The large brown bean bag in the room would have been a horror movie under a blacklight if i'd had one with me. Bedding on top looked stained and dirty. I slept in my clothes on top of the sheets for one night. Bathroom looked better but upon closer inspection there was a lot of chipped paint on all walls and some mold on the ceiling of the shower. The shower products were none existant but the metal brackets to hold the bottles were screwed into shower wall like bottles had been there at one point. One thing a lot of Moxy reviews say in general is about thin walls and being able to hear other rooms. Was NOT the case here. Didn't hear a sound once i was inside the room. MUST also say that the staff here are extremely nice and helpful hence the two star review. Saw a handyman in the lobby the following day busting his ass to do what he could to keep small things working and not let the place fall apart even further. If not for the staff it would have been a 1 star review as the place is a DUMP!! Not even cheap either. Room was right around $200+ for a Saturday night. Not worth it in the slightest. I will not return to this Moxy in particular unless they knock it down and build a brand new building on the site. The Moxy Hotel in Tempe has a convenient location, but it fell short in other areas. When you walk in, there is no traditional lobby. It's a lobby bar/game room and the bartender also serves as the person who checks you in. Rooms are bare minimum: thin mattress, no comforter just a blanket. No rugs or couch or any furniture and the walls were thin, making it hard to enjoy a quiet stay. The blackout curtains worked well. There was a huge beanbag chair which was fun. I didn't mind the lack of a closet. I thought the concept of hangers on the wall itself was funky, functional, and a better use of space in most cases. The "ironing room" -- a supposed area stocked with towels, toiletries, and other amenities. Unfortunately, it was completely understocked, for basic supplies like towels. It's clear there's a lack of attention to detail when it comes to maintaining the hotel's resources. There was a hotel restaurant but free breakfast is limited (parfait, fruit, muffin) not like other hotels in Marriott Bonvoy hotel chain offer. And overall this hotel is in a great location. Close to downtown Tempe as well as quick freeway access. Location is the only redeeming quality. The location is ideal, with a CVS right next door for any quick needs, and it's incredibly easy to catch an Uber, Lyft, or even a Waymo to explore different areas around the city. read more

I cannot believe this property is allowed to carry a Marriot tag. It seems like a run down old motel run by a team that for the most part has total disdain for the customers. The rooms are cold and very poorly maintained, the hallways long and cold and despite that attempt to make it a retro vibe Hotspot it fails on every front!!! This place is filthy, hallways ate disgusting, there is a horrible smell in the hallways which I believe is from the multiple rooms that are being fogged, fourth floor ceiling in hallway is stained all over and looks like it's suffered heavy water damage, there are NO smoke alarms hooked up in the hallway on the fourth floor, out room was ok looking, bathroom looked very clean & I cannot wait to take a shower in the morning and get out of here. Its is weird to check in to the hotel with the bartender and have tour room bumbers given to you aloud with ppl sitting maybe two three feet from you on either side. However that was my experience checking into this hotel and that makes me uncomfortable. Next while checking in i was asked are you just here for the day? Uh... no. But after i saw my room and my blanket had a big old stain on it I wished I was here for just the day... Went to housekeeping asked for my room to get a new grey bedcover. Instead of housekeeping doing this for me I started my visit to Tempe remaking a bed that hadnt been even sat on yet. Not happy about that. Then scrolling thru my reservation i notice housekeeping isnt even guaranteed. So that makes sense why the staff didnt offer to do this. Still i expect more from a marriottt branded hotel. This hotel is really geared to a segment I am no longer in. 20 yr ild me would be like this so sooooo cool. 40+ me is like "hmmmmmm". The lobby is dark but open. It has cool lighting. Lots of seating. a pool table, fusbol, had guitars on the wall u could borrow and bring back and a lot of free pinball machines. Large tables for dining or working. Its very comfortable with a young hip vibe. Big bar in the center where drinks and food can be ordered. This also can be accessed by the pool area that is adjacent to lobby What I hate obviously is you check in at the bar. Weird. The hallways are colorful. There is one pink door per floor where guests have keyed access to towels, toiletries and ironing supplies. The room is clean but humid. Wish u could iron in your own room. I disliked needing to go way down the hall for that. Pool is a good size and offers floaties and when on deck there are cabanas. Fun. It was a little dirty last night so we did not use it. Room: i had 2 queen beds. They were very comfortable. So far haven't had one bed bug bite me. Yay, as four months ago someone left a review with pictures of them being eaten alive so I was fearful of this. But again my room was fine. However- Its a very dim room. 20 yr old me would love this. Me now- too dark for my liking. Bathroom fixtures excellent. Sliding glass doors. Fancy hand held modern shower fixtures. Large overhead shower head. A+. Con: exhaust fan is quiet but the bath gets VERY humid. Had avocado toast from the kitchen. It was average nothing special. Get something else is my recommendation. Every time I was by bar lots were eating, it looked good and fresh. Grab and go pantry is excellent. Lots of things to chose from. Staff welcoming. Management excellent. I asked for a pool side room w balcony. I got ground floor. Disliked the location. Room was fine, clean, safe. I have to say i feel there were a lot of tinder hookups going on here that particular night (not a fault of Moxy by any means)which created a temp weird vibe. Made me uncomfortable. We had a great extended stay at Moxy over New Years! While I'm not new to Marriott, this was my first time staying at a Moxy, and I'm pleased to say that I would definitely consider this trendy hotel brand again. We checked in around 4 p.m. on a Friday, and immediately loved the fun and eclectic lobby and bar. There's plenty of space to spread out and work or play games, the latter of which we did a few times during our stay. There's a pool table, foozball table, old arcade games, tabletop chess and checkers ... you name it, and Moxy probably has it. Moxy has dubbed itself a "self-service" hotel, which means there's a common room on each floor that has extra pillows, towels, and toiletries for you to grab. You can also do your ironing there if you'd like - although our room did come equipped with a steamer (which I actually prefer over an iron). That said, you can still request housekeeping come and freshen up your room, which we did twice during our five night stay. The room itself was a nice size, with some unique decor and cool motion-detector LED lights beneath the bed. The bed was decently comfortable, although we did request an extra blanket on our first night. The shower was modern and updated, with both rain and detachable shower heads. While the water pressure left a lot to be desired, the hot water was abundant. The service throughout our stay was exemplary. We worked with Garreth and Keisha primarily, both of whom were extremely friendly and helpful. We even ended up in the lobby on New Year's Eve, and were treated to a champagne toast at midnight. We got our room at a good price given the time of year (ASU wasn't currently in session) - although it's worth noting that parking is $12 a night and that can add up on a longer stay. That said, you really can't beat the location of this hotel. With a CVS next door, and several hot spots in Tempe and Scottsdale just up the road, Moxy is a solid option for your next visit to AZ! read more

They do have a "stash" room that has 24 hr access but didn't have extra towels. Requested a towel 2x at the front desk, never received it. Had to go the next day and physically ask again for a towel. Asked for a rollaway bed, they said they have 1 for the entire hotel....the maid came to our room and brought sheets for the rollaway bed, than never returned with the bed - 2 hrs later went back to the front desk to find out management advised that the bed is already used. also, there was a dead cockroach in the hall by room 110. This place could use minor upgrades & more staff especially for being owned by Marriott In closing Great place/location for a college kid, who needs a job or flexible schedule . read more

stayed here one night- was not a very enjoyable one. The curtains on the window are sheer and the window was facing the asu dorm parking garage, so our whole room was lit up with a bright light shining through all night. Fire alarm went off at 2 am...and then again at 8:30 am?? Had to wait a half an hour to an hour for towels at the pool. I tried calling the front desk on 3 separate occasions and rung for a while and no one ever picked up. i had to walk down there and wait for someone to show up if i needed something. When we woke up my bf clogged the toilet somehow and we had to check out in a few hours and we called- no one answered it course. So my bf walked down and told them, they said they will call their "engineer" and he will arrive soon. flash forward to three hours later the so called engineer never arrived if we had to use the bathroom we had to go down to the lobby. listen lady we don't need an engineer to use a plunger just give it to me at that point. oh and i almost forgot the shower door would not stay closed it kept slowly sliding open so i had to shut the shower door over and over and OVER again while in the shower. i think this hotels high rating is underserved. read more

Matters can only get worst when hotel does not recognize they are part of Marriott and recognize frequent guest! And matters got worst! Parking lot super sketchy. Note front desk could not direct us to parking area. Room backs up to parking lot, nice view. And room number one smelled like smoked thus we had to go back to first floor again. Note hotel is non smoking! With experience like this, you would think this is a cheap hotel stay but it's not due to being by the university and high season in Phoenix. This was my first time staying at a Moxy Hotel and it was a fun experience. It seems geared towards a younger crowd with a bar and how they decorate their rooms. I like the fact there are guitars everywhere including in our room, I just wish I knew how to play. They have Ironing Rooms where guests can iron their clothes which also stocks some extra supplies (towels, toilet paper, coffee keurigs) that people might need. The hotel staff seemed pretty nice and responsive, the people checking guests in were also waiting on people for the restaurant and mixing drinks at the bar. Their lobby/bar/lounge area had pinball machines, old arcade games, a pool table and other games. In one corner they have a small business center with a printer. This place is very dog friendly, so we had our dogs both inside the lobby and on their poolside patio area. This hotel seemed in a good location for us to get around with a rental, near ASU and a bunch of different restaurants and shops. I think we'll try this place again. read more

Luckily we are here on a business trip so no expenses were spent on our half, but I would like to take time to say I highly recommend looking into staying elsewhere. The room smells disgusting, I can't even bring myself to use the shower because of how dirty it is and the bedroom curtains have red/brownish stains. Do not stay here if you are traveling vexing with children!!!! Pros: Pool was decent. Cons almost everything else: Thank goodness we stayed only one night last week before we changed hotels. We arrived after a day at spring training and when we walked in I thought I was in a cheap hotel three blocks over from the gas strip. The hotel staff checked us in at the bar with an iPad and they were friendly but one was in ripped jeans and the other in straight up sweatpants. The elevator smelled and the carpet was filthy. I was trying to be postive but even our kids were grossed out. The room for four had two towels in it, one nearly gone roll of TP, not even half full soap dispenser in the shower and at sink. Paper thin bedding, zero coffee maker, or mini fridge. We had to throw away our leftovers from an amazing dinner in town. We found the pantry room across the hall but that was a joke. No-one is leaving the restroom in the middle of using it to run down the hall for more TP. If the room has 4 guests two towels are not enough. the cleaning staff clearly did the bare minimum at least I hope so and that was clearly it. Crumples sticky notes that say "turn me on" . The front dest will not answer the phone if you need anything. The kicker for me was at 6am in our room it sounded like the people above us were dropping bowling balls. By 6:15am we were all up and grouchy. Called the front desk multiple times to see what was going on. Went downstairs in my pjs at 6:30am to find the fort desk kid also wearing sweatpants walking with another guest who was complaining about not having any soap or shampoo in his room. When I told him about the constant pounding and what room we were in he told me "oh the gym just opened and it right above you". WTF who puts the gym on the 4th floor above a guest room. He told me he couldn't leave the desk because he was the only one there. When I went up to the gym I found a bunch of teens that were weightlifting and then dropping weights. Luckily they were kind enough to stop after I asked but sheesh never again. read more

This property is...interesting. It has a lot of personality and a distinct vibe, but it feels like it was designed by a post-college bachelor who just came into some money and wants to flaunt it with ostentatious design choices. That said, I still enjoyed my 6-night stay overall. See below for a detailed review. PROS: - The food: Normally hotel food is trash served straight out of a freezer. Not so at the Moxy! There is a full, industrial kitchen with a chef who actually cares about the quality of the food here. I ordered so much food -- a buffalo chicken sandwich and fries ($9), avocado toast ($5), and multiple cheese platters ($5) -- and everything was delicious! They also have great happy hour specials and a fully stocked bar. - The music: Whoever curated the playlist for the hotel did a great job. I heard everything from Tame Impala to Kali Uchis while lounging at the pool. - Customer service...mostly. Overall the customer service was fantastic. You get free drinks upon check-in. The manager and staff asked me how my stay was going daily, and they were quick to make the accommodations I requested. However, the housekeeping situation (see below) is baffling and frustrating. - The location: While not as dope as staying in downtown Tempe, it is located near ASU. so there are a lot of tasty eateries nearby. There is also a CVS next door. - The gym is solid. It has several elliptical and treadmill machines along with a large set of dumbbells. The biggest perk is the adjacent balcony that you can utilize post-workout. CONS: - Design aesthetic: As mentioned above, this place reeks of masculine, millennial energy. Coming from a millennial, it was too much for me. - The room: We had a king room with a sofa bed on the third floor. It was right underneath the gym so we could hear every stomp on the treadmills or weights dropped. (PRO TIP: Ask for a room away from the elevators on any floor). The design of the room itself was too modern for my taste. There is no covered storage, so you have to hang all of your clothes on wooden pegs on the walls. - There are no irons in the rooms. You have to iron and steam your clothes in the communal ironing rooms on each floor. - You have to request housekeeping to receive it. Even if you have status, they prioritize cleaning rooms for future patrons. It may take hours for you to receive any housekeeping service (6 hours in my experience). - This is a party hotel near ASU, so the clientele leans young. If you're in recovery or looking for hotels suitable for work, you may need to think twice before booking. read more

The moxy is a hip, one of a kind hotel located right next to ASU. While at the Moxy parking is plentiful, and the hotel is very spacious. Downside is that the rooms do get really humid, despite having an air conditioner, and the rooms don't come with a fridge, or iron, blow dryer etc. they have a room downstairs with all that stuff. They do have a gym but half the things there were out of commission, I ended up just using the free weights. The bar is cute, but the drinks were mid at best. They have kids working the bar and they're not real mixologists like several of them mentioned lol The food was pretty good as well, although there are better places to eat in the city. Moxy hotel was an affordable option near ASU campus specifically marketed for very young people. Bed was fine, but my toilet did not flush, which was a big inconvenience. Check-in is only available at the full-service bar. We did receive a free drink voucher upon check in, and I had a hand-written welcome note in my room with a bottle of water. Nice touches, but this hotel was outside my comfort zone/not for me. The decor was so odd that I was uncomfortable in my room with a woman staring at me (see photo lol). read more

I stayed in room 230 on Monday night, 3/28. I didn't sleep at all because I felt bug bites. Sure enough, got up Tuesday morning with bites on my face and hand. I notified front desk that the room has bed bugs (showed her my bites) and requested that it be professionally inspected, requested a room change and asked to speak to the manager. Unfortunately, I had to leave and headed out to a meeting, so I didn't get to speak with the manager. The manager and I were playing phone tag till I finally returned to the hotel early evening and showed him my bug bites. I was infuriating because they didn't take my complaint seriously till they saw my bites. It was only then that they tried to schedule a professional to check the room and then they changed my room. I have a strong reaction to these bites. They are extremely itchy and swollen and I ended up developing cellulitis, an infection in my hand. After a visit to urgent care, I'm now on antibiotics. read more

I'd like to start off by saying this is my second time trying Moxy in Tempe. I like the overall concept. On paper this place sounds cool. You checkin at the bar which is weird but it works. I love the vibe in general of the lobby though. Cool lounge areas, pool table, it's really cool. Where I have trouble is how they seem disorganized beyond belief. There's trash, messes everywhere. It's absolute chaos. In the room itself, I've quite possibly never heard thinner walls or windows. I can hear the people upstairs using the bathroom, unzipping their luggage, and any other movements like walking reverberate so loudly I feel my bed shake. The building feels as cheap as a motel built on a set design budget. It sounds that cheap too. Ultimately my first visit I had a nice room but I think I must have had no neighbors above. It was also new and up kept. Now, I have the insane noise from above, screaming kids running down the hallways. Drunk party goers, and outside parties in the parking lot. I'll never stay here again. Ever. Not only are all the unpleasant noises when I'm trying to sleep a drag, I was given a room that wasn't cleaned. Literally the bed has been slept in, shower used, towels on the floor. I'm still a little shocked but hey, they're busy? The guy who checked me in was super nice, but sadly this hotel feels worse than a motel and I just paid a rate for one night that most don't pay for a car payment each month. I'll conclude by saying this place has the ability to be cool, but unfortunately the paper thin walls and poor upkeep have it feeling like a college dorm room used to oblivion. read more

My niece and I came here for a pool day last Friday. The pool is on the smallish side and NOT enough lounge chairs but I will say the front desk make this hotel a very pleasant experience and the lobby/bar area is nicely decorated. I had the chicken tacos for lunch and they were ok. I'd return mostly because of the customer service is so on point and the folks that work here are superstars. The lack of lounge chairs seems like an easy fix.. they have like 5 loungers but the other seating area are couches and seem to take lots of space. read more

I stayed here to go to a conference in the area and it was the closest hotel. I didn't find a review that was helpful in my deciding whether to stay here, so adding this for those who may not be college students or adjacent. I would recommend finding another place. I felt like what I paid for / the schtick was "hipness." Everywhere was the message that it was a "cool" hotel - and the lobby was often full with people playing games, there's a bar with a hanging out vibe. Even the ironing rooms have a vibe they are selling (see pictures). If you like this, you'll like this place. Maybe I would have when I was college-aged, hard to know, maybe still a little corny. But scratch below the surface and it was otherwise a pretty poor stay. The room smelly (faintly - I will give it that) of sewage. The air cond was SO LOUD and super concentrated in one area pointing towards bed. I did not sleep well because of the noise and waking up to turn it off or on. No blankets to help adjust to the cold, and the heat becomes unbearable after a few hours. The carpets were old and musty and elevators smelled like smoke. The building itself is in bad shape. And things were not super clean. Although the decor inside was "hip" for 2000ish, industrial style. Which all makes it feel more like a cheap motel. Except for the wanna-be-hip with the youngsters vibe. So again, if you want that vibe, and to stay somewhere that looks like it might be popping during school - this could be an excellent fit. But if you are coming to the area for a non-ASU related reason and don't put a premium on hip, I suggest either paying the price of a cheap motel to using your money to find a nicer place. PS The people who worked there, including the young ones working in guest-facing positions, were all really nice. read more

One more update to end our stay this time....Tim is so caring and into his business that I he reached out to me by phone, as well. Just as I told him, the staff at the desk are awesome and I see their remodel (Tim :-)). He was very accommodating, even though I just want a headboard and the leather luggage rack, which he is trying to find the vendor he got it from :-) WE HIGHLY RECOMMEND THE MOXY AND WILL STAY HERE AGAIN!!!! read more

"When Marriott launched the Moxy brand, they chose Tempe Arizona to pop the cherry." Seriously? This is the beginning of their description for this place? Well, yeah, it is, and that gives you an idea of what kind of place this is. It thinks it's edgy and cool, but in reality, it's cheap and barely OK as a hotel. The vibe is more fraternity house with nightly charges. Someone at Marriott gave a 19-year-old the opportunity to design a hotel, I guess. Am I the demographic this place is trying to appeal to? Clearly not, but I think even edgy Gen Z types would like to stay in a place that provides a glass or even a plastic cup in the room so you can rinse out your mouth when you brush your teeth or after you puke from a night of partying in the fraternity house down the street (a scenario this ultra-edgy hotel would prefer you to experience, by the way). They might even want to have a washcloth to clean that puke off their faces, but they don't provide those either. They don't bother with a closet, but hey, you get pegs to hang your clothes on. In fact, those cool pegs hang right over the TV, but you didn't really want to watch TV, did you? You can always throw your clothes on the floor when you fire up Netflix for a few eps of Bridgerton. What they do provide, however, is a guitar in your room. Well, OK, I guess. They also provide an enormous bean bag chair in each room, and I can only guess what happens on that thing. I know we didn't want to sit on it, and having had a bean bag chair at one time in my younger days, I know it's darned near impossible to get that washable cover off, clean it, then wrestle the bag back into it after it's been through a dryer. I'm guessing the housekeepers know the same thing. However, it was good for blocking the arctic blast from the air conditioner which is perfectly aligned with the head of the bed. When it's 100 degrees outside, you need the A/C, but when it blows straight at your face, yeah, you'll likely get pneumonia by morning. The bean bag and the extra bed pillows helped on that front by diverting the direct air flow. I didn't even mention the motion-sensor lights that come from beneath the bed! Got to puke in the middle of the night? No problemo -- just roll out of bed, and the floor lights up to show you the way to the bathroom. Don't need to get out of bed? No problem again -- the lights come on randomly all damn night, waking you about every 10 minutes until you finally crawl under the platform and figure out how to unplug them. By the way, when you get up in the night to puke, don't forget that the bathroom door is one of those trendy sliding barn door things, because if you grab the door handle to open it the normal way, you'll derail it. Can't have you getting crushed by the bathroom door when you were merely trying to recycle your margaritas. Other interesting tidbits: -- The housekeepers don't come into your room at all. We returned to our room after being away all day to find no clean towels, an unmade bed, and the same almost-used-up roll of toilet paper in the bathroom. (Extra roll in the bathroom? Of course not!) We'd resorted to using Kleenex by the time we checked out the next morning. -- The door into your room is frosted glass on the top half. Every room has DISTURB printed on the glass. There's a black roller shade inside the door, so in order to have privacy and not see the hall lights through the glass, you pull the shade down to imply DO NOT DISTURB. At least that's what we assumed. We rolled the shade up when we left for the day to let housekeeping know the room was available to be disturbed. Didn't work. -- The check-in desk is the bar. They hand you two tokens for free drinks when you check in. We cashed them in for bottles of water instead and got drinks in places with more ambience. They have a variety of places to sit in the extremely dark lobby, plus various games to play while hanging out. (Think college dorm lobby, and you're spot-on.) -- The carpet in the hallways already looks like a bad night at the fraternity house. If you're not feeling well, don't look down when staggering to your room. -- Lots of broken beer bottles in the parking lot. Pick your parking spot carefully, and beware the homeless dude in the lot who accosted us as we were leaving at 7:30 on a Sunday morning. He asked for money, swore he wanted to use it to buy a bar of soap, then cussed us out and wished us a fiery death on the highway on our trip home. He left us with a warm, fuzzy feeling after our two nights in Arizona's weirdest hotel experiment. read more
